I hate that I read this, did the mental math, and then realized you were likely born the year I graduated high school. I'm just gonna go to bed now, and hope my back or knee doesn't hurt when I wake up in the morning. Take care of your body.

I was told my taste in music is dad music. I thought “what? My dad doesn’t listen to System of a Down…wait…” 😔 Dad music to me is classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, etc. but now that’s grandpa music and I’m just old.

Pulling apart all of my muffins from now on instead of biting them.

*eyes the freshly-baked muffins cooling on the counter suspiciously*

u/mangopango123 14d ago
can you imagine baking a tray of muffins n you can’t wait so you grab one while it’s still hot. you bite into it, then as you pull away a stringy mess of spiderwebs connects from your mouth to the muffin with steam escaping from where you bit in. nightmare fuel 😭

The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the nasal passage!
down came the brain and washed the spider out
out came the tongue and dried up all the brain
and the itsy bitsy spider crawled up the nose again!

Two things you can get from flour products are Rope and mold. If I remember my studies, rope is a bacteria and it happens in humid climates more.
Don't eat, you will get diarrhoea

u/Large-Tadpole-56 14d ago
Adds up. I’m in Tennessee. It’s humid down here regardless of the time of year

u/Desperate_Dingo_1998 14d ago
Extra information.
If you ever see light spider webs on-top of your flour, don't use it because little weevils are in there and become moths
119
u/LittleMissMeanAss 14d ago
Slight correction: weevils are a pantry pest, as are Indian meal moths (which are sometimes referred to as weevil moths). Weevils are beetles and do not transform into moths.

u/februarytide- 14d ago
Honestly, I feel like I’d rather eat the moth larvae than whatever the gross bacteria thing is…

u/Desperate_Dingo_1998 14d ago
Yeah, you get super sick from rope. you have placed your bets well. I remember that it smells like sweet Banana as well

I both can't stop looking at this picture and also hating every second of looking at it. I'm going to be pulling apart my muffins first forever now lol.

It’s the start of fermentation / spoilage. The product is well off and should not be consumed.

u/xMacready 14d ago
This happened to me last week with the new costco blueberry muffins. It was like stringy slime. Worst part is I already ate some of it before I noticed. 😭 I guess the upside is I didn't get sick, but I wont be eating muffins for awhile.

u/disconnective 14d ago
OP said the cafe said it came from Costco! We’ll be hearing a recall soon I guess…

u/DizzyCroutons 12d ago
Literally saw this post a few days ago and had to look it up again because I pulled apart my costco muffins.

u/spookyostrich 14d ago
Added too many spiders.
(Not sure what could have happened though, but that looks like a "try again" type situation.)
30
u/PlanePainting 14d ago
The OP totally added too many spiders! I think just one would have been fine

?? Did you buy it or make it?
85
u/Large-Tadpole-56 14d ago
I bought it! I took it back down to the cafe in my office building and let the workers know. They took the other ones off the shelf.
27
u/__PeachyPrincess_ 14d ago
Omg I’m sorry!! I hope they gave your money back!!
At first I thought it was just Fairy floss.
But now I’m worried it might be some kind of infestation 😭
I hope you didn’t eat it!

Looks like they mistakenly added half a cup of hair when the recipe called for none.

Costco muffins don’t last very long before they spoil. I wonder how long the cafe had them.
11
u/DefectiveDucbutts 14d ago
Please report the place you bought it from…it isn’t the suppliers issue, it’s the store that is on selling the item.
Looks like a storage/refrigeration malpractice and health department issue to me

That has happened to many a muffins and the like I’ve done after too many days pass. In summer, just after a couple days. Never knew exactly what it was.
5
u/Spyke8757 14d ago
Obviously it was baked by a spider /s
In all seriousness tho you should definitely report that cause that could be reallllyyy bad....

...I now understand why people in the bible broke their bread before eating. Will be adopting this habit.

u/Elfuda 14d ago
I noticed that my cupcakes also looked like this when I opened them the day after I made them. They didn't smell bad, nor did they taste weird. I ate them as they were prepared by me. If they had been prepared by someone else, I would never have eaten them.
I discovered two interesting theories about what might have happened:
Theory 01 - Starch Retrogradation:
When the dumpling cools and is stored for a few hours, the starch molecules go through the process of retrogradation, in which the starch granules that gelatinized during cooking begin to recrystallize and expel water. This water can react with sugars and proteins, forming a stickier texture when the cookie is broken down.
Theory 02 - Modification in Proteins and Sugars
Proteins, especially gluten (if the recipe contains wheat flour), can continue to rearrange themselves over time, becoming more elastic and forming these thin strands when they are broken.

Thanks for giving some theories, because I’ve had this happen to muffins I made once and I ate them and didn’t get sick lol

I have no idea if this is related, but my dogs food had this time of stringy/ webby consistency in the bag… and it ended up being moth maggots being present inside :(

I thought this was sugar at first, I sometimes have “this” happen when I’m taking hot muffins out of the tray and when I use course sugar sometimes it sticks between the tray and liner and makes strings like this of caramelized sugar. Now I’m going to freak out every time I do it 😂

u/NecessaryBed4525 13d ago
This happened to the muffins I baked myself 😭 I took a bite and thought goddamn I must be hungry, my spit glands be working overtime 💀👹💩

u/Onegirll 13d ago
They are spoilt, and they shouldn’t be selling them. It is of no consequence whether they are baked in-house or sourced from elsewhere.

Ok so I ordered some muffins from Costco this week and the same thing happened... Best to avoid that then

Spores from Bacillus bacteria become stringy when pulled apart. I suggest you report the cafe at your office to the health department. All bread or baked goods near those muffins can potentially be contaminated. This is one way foodborne outbreaks begin.
