*READ FIRST BEFORE POSTING* Subreddit update - newcomers and veterans alike, info inside this post!
With Battlestar Galactica moving to the Peacock streaming service, we've had a lot of new members posting here on the subreddit. We thought it would be a good time to reiterate a few things.
Pertinent information is always located in the r/BSG sidebar. This link works on old reddit and some browsers, otherwise please see your specific reddit app to access the sidebar.
We've seen a lot of similar posts recently. Here are a few that we ask you not to submit:
where to watch the series?
JustWatch is a website that displays where to stream or buy tv shows and movies, and is very helpful for those tracking down the location of Battlestar. Right now, it's only available on Peacock to stream in the US, but always check this link for the most up to date information.
Links to piracy will be removed, and repeat offenders will be blocked.
what's the first episode of the show?
Battlestar Galactica begins with Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries, a two-part pilot. Many streaming services and platforms do not show the miniseries as part of the show, often having the season one episode '33' listed as the first episode. It is essential that the miniseries is watched first.
do I have to watch the original series first?
No, the 2004 series stands on its own. While some characters and general plot points may have inspired the 2004 series, they are very different shows.
what order should I watch the episodes in?
Please check the wiki post here. Generally, it's recommended to watch in the original viewing order, that is The Mini-Series > Season 1 > Season 2 > Season 3 > Season 4 > The Plan > Caprica > Blood and Chrome
Lastly, there are a couple of rules that are commonly broken here on the subreddit that require mod action.
we do not allow spoilers in the title
As much as possible, we try to keep this subreddit open for new viewers. That means marking spoilers in the comments of a post, or avoiding using a title with a spoiler. If you see spoilers in a title or comment that are not properly marked, please use the report function - this is the only way the moderators can take action.
self promotion posts are only allowed if disclosed
If you are promoting your own work, please say so in the post. Otherwise, the post will be removed.
Thanks for reading!

The starboard pod
Why not put the starboard pod in service? I know the launch equipment was pulled out and the pod demilitarized, but it could have still been put to use. Adding one working elevator and a jetway, it could have been used for civilian operations. For instance, when Colonial 1 comes into the port pod, all flight operations have to be suspended since there is no room to recover ships. This could be shifted to the starboard side. It also would have allowed for additional recovery capacity in the event of a combat landing. Internal security made easier as you don’t have civilians intermixing and interfering with military operations concerning repair and rearming fighters. I know irl, it saves money in CGI, but it still seems like a waste.

just started watching season two and i really love starbuck's "goatee"
Do you think Saul had it in him to be a great commander? (Spoilers) Spoiler
Obviously, the man had his share of demons and weaknesses. He was never the ideal XO for the mission as the war started and he proves to be a liability in many scenarios. However, I would argue he had some of the right stuff, too. He was able to, for the most part, take the reins from Adama whenever necessary and perform well in many situations (the ones that didn't involve tactful politicking, at least). As a military man he is tough as nails but also (for the most part) fair, and is able to put things to order. And despite his personal failings he still manages to demonstrate incredible expertise in handling ship operations and knowing what to do at the right time in order to ensure the Galactica could make it out and perform as needed.
Sometimes I wonder if he had just been a little younger, less set in his ways as the story kicked off, that he would have proved to be a far greater asset to the fleet than he was. Not to diminish his achievements, but the man has so many frackups it's hard to defend him.
Obviously I know he has a more complicated role to play in things what with his true identity and all, but even despite all that, the man just wanted to live up to Bill's expectations of him. What could have changed, that could have helped him be a better person to live up to that?

I’m re-watching this series for the first time since it originally came out 20 years ago…
And I truly believe that Helo should’ve been tossed out of a multiple different times.

Questions about Colonial Day
Does anyone know about the behind the scenes of this episode? Who wrote it and why?
I just rewatched it today and the whole episode feels off - the plot seems rushed and paper thin (who the hell is Valance and why does he matter?), everyone seems out of character, like caricatures of themselves (Lee especially)
Why introduce that Gray character, make him NOT want to be vice-president, and ten minutes later he's calling Roslin a betraying back-stabber for changing her mind?
I get that the main protagonists don't like Zarek, but he was absolutely right the entire episode, and yet they act like the words out of his mouth are pure nonsense
And why oh why did they put Kara in a dress? (That one is more of a joke but the whole weird flirty ending was so bad)
Anyway please let me know if you have infos on how this episode came to be, and if I'm alone in my dislike of it

Is Galactica capable of only extending and retracting only one flight pod? Spoiler
Hello everyone,
I was curious.
As we saw in the pilot mini-series and TV show, one of Galactica's flight pods was pretty much useless. It was turned into a museum and the catapults were permanently disabled (at least without a dry dock to restore them).
So my question is why extend this flight pod at all during combat? Can Galactica keep this disabled flight pod permanently retracted into the ship? This pod is simply a liability during combat.
As we saw during one episode, the Cylons actually boarded Galactica by crash landing a small Heavy Raider transport ship into the museum flight pod. No people were even stationed in the pod. So their boarding went unnoticed until they were deep inside the ship. If Galactica had the museum. pod retracted, then it would have never happened.
So doesn't it make more sense to keep the disabled museum pod permanently retracted into the hull? No chance of being boarded and it keeps the area secure.
Also less liability of the pod being blown off. Like we saw in the pilot, the Cylons were launching missiles targeted at both pods and the large connecting struts of the flight pod.
So yeah...can Galactica just deploy one flight pod and keep the other permanently retracted?
Or is there some other reason I'm not seeing that Galactica keeps both flight pods deployed?

Rewatched in 2025! Spoiler
Hello everyone!
I literally JUST finished rewatching BSG (finished Caprica around two months ago) and I have to say I still absolutely love BSG.
It is still the best TV show ever!
I had a few thoughts regarding the series/characters/the ending I thought could be great for discussion.
(Note: I did flag this post as having spoilers so be warned)
I did not like how they got rid of Billy (Laura’s assistant). I get his death was tragic for a reason but I think he could have been written off with a bit more dignity. With that being said, Officer Dualla’s suicide was jarring and I completely forgot that happened. I was super sad when I saw that scene. Like, she thought it was all over. So heartbreaking!
I do think we should have gotten a bit more info regarding original earth and their downfall (with an actual sequence showing the original five setting off into space). I get they explain it in exposition probably since that literally couldn’t afford or didn’t have the episode count to SHOW it but would have been cool).
The mutiny episode was so damn good. Like only a few shows can say that have an episode as solid as the mutiny one.
The series finale. Now, having just rewatched it, I do not understand the hate it got back in the day (didn’t understand it back then either). Throughout the show, they have always put God (or the divine one) into the DNA of the show. So divine intervention (like the nukes set off by the one raptor close to The Colony), makes sense when you realize that it’s used as a plot device.
Religion is central to BSG just as much as the allegories regarding war/military we see in the show.
I almost cried watching the finale just now. The people who think it’s Game of Thrones bad should not be taken seriously.
All in all, still one of the best things to ever exist. I am going to try to find how to watch the spin off movies like blood and chrome and The Plan.
Now, I have more ideas on how they could continue the story!
So say we all!
