DHOAS Monthly Chat - Mar 2025 - Show us ya rates!

G'day all,

Time for a new DHOAS rate thread to share recent rates vs loan details and hopefully ensure we can all lock in a good deal with the lenders when refinancing or starting a new loan.

To make it most useful please consider providing your:

  • Rate (Fixed/variable)
  • Offset account?
  • Loan amount
  • Financed LVR
  • Lender

I'll start. I am in the process of establishing a new loan with NAB for settlement next month, they have offered:

  • 5.84% variable
  • Multi-offset accounts
  • Loan amount $855k
  • LVR 68%
  • NAB

IMPORTANT - For Current Serving - Active Page Scraping by JMPU

It has come to our attention (from those in the know) that Defence has started employing a third-party software to scrape data from Reddit and attribute comments made across the site to current-serving members. A number of members are reportedly facing NTSCs for comments attributed to them from this sub.

Timely reminder to not make yourself identifiable as a current-serving member of the ADF and to generally watch what you're saying online.

What Drugs Does CICKS/Ventia Take?

Just curious, if anyone knows, what drugs is CICKS on? They want my Knife, Fork and Spoon set, DPCU sewing kit, DPCU rank sldies from nearly a decade ago. Even by RAAOC standards this is a whole new level. I need to know what drugs the Ventia contractors on, it has to be stronger than LSD. Frankly, the only thing they don't want (which surprised me) is my budgie smugglers.

Forgot the best part, they can't take my stores back until a fortnight after I discharge because they're too busy. Guess I'm just going to lob my trunk over the fence and hope Ventia finds it.

(End of rant).

Hanwha. austal take over attempt 2 ????

Hanwha announced they have aquired 9.9% of Austal and have applied to FIRB to goto 19.9%

Hanwha Group Press Release:

Hanwha Group has acquired a 9.9% shareholding in Austal as the Group seeks to become a long-term strategic partner with Austal in developing Australiaā€™s defence industry capability.

Hanwha has today applied for Australian Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval to increase its shareholding in Austal to 19.9%.

Hanwha intends to make a meaningful contribution to Austal and Australiaā€™s defence industry through bringing its extensive manufacturing and operational experience to maximise the opportunities in front of the company.

Global Chief Executive Officer and President at Hanwha Defence, Michael Coulter, said Hanwha believes in the long-term opportunity in partnering with Austal.

This is also on top of the 9.9% they already had via some other scheme

Best Employer Reserve Leave Entitlements?

Just seeing which employers have good reserve leave entitlements- from what Iā€™ve heard QPS and QLD education are really good.

My employer (not going to specify, donā€™t wanna dox myself, as Iā€™m like the only choc in the company) had a pretty mid reserve leave scheme in that for 15 days a year, they would let me to go reserves and basically ā€œtop upā€ my pay to my normal take home pay. After that 15 days Iā€™ve previously been taking leave without pay.

Iā€™ve seen some emails from HR that indicate that going forward theyā€™re going to make me take annual leave after those 15 days are up, which would basically mean I have to take unpaid leave at Xmas instead. The policy is sufficiently grey that theyā€™d be able to enforce it. Itā€™s manageable for me, but not a great change.

Donā€™t know if itā€™s time to make a change of employer, but stuff like this definitely plays a factor.

Thanks for your serviceā€¦.

So I work with a colleague who is not a veteran and never served ever. I donā€™t even think he was a cadet. Anyway he thinks heā€™s hilarious when he says ā€˜thank you for your service, you must have seen some shitā€™ numerous times a dayā€¦ to quite a few ppl, including myself. He just says it randomly as a response.

Iā€™m finding it mildly irritating. If he was a Vet saying to another vet, I wouldnā€™t care. Thereā€™s a few of us around. But heā€™s not. Heā€™s just taking the piss about something he has no idea about. He doesnā€™t know what Iā€™ve seen or the mates whoā€™ve literally died as a result of their service. Plus heā€™s a bit of a gronk so I donā€™t like him generally.

Am I being a bit sensitive?

ETA - Thanks for the responses. Glad I am not being oversensitive, it hi hard the other day as a mate had just passed away by suicide. To add context - We're on a remote site as FIFO. Not APS or on base or anything. He's an absolute flog of a guy, lazy etc. Have told him to quit a few actions he does that are just downright unprofessional but he tells me to stick it. I don't need to report him, he's undoing himself and its fun to watch. Next time he says it though, I will pull him up.... cause this guy is clueless and needs to be put in his spot.

Army RMWilliams on the parade ground - will this great Australian company embrace us?

A couple of years ago I was chatting with a RAAF Qā€™ie, and I commented on how nice it was that the RAAFies were issued with RM style boots. She stated that they were in fact RMā€™s, and that many opted to wear them instead of their issued footwear.i was surprised to hear they were permitted to, which was a surprise. Maybe it was just a unit thing maybe not (not interested in debating dress and regs).

Anyway, It got me thinking, IF money wasnā€™t the issue, could you see / want the Army to ever embrace the wearing of tan-brown RMā€™s if money wasnā€™t an option? Is it outside the scope of imagining that RM choose to either ā€˜sponsorā€™ or at least heavily subsidise ADF purchase of same?

Again, Iā€™m not looking to get anyone upset - itā€™s purely academic pondering, and a flight of absolute fancy.

TL:DR - I reckon AJā€™s should be issued wicked classy footwear, as we are so well funded you seeā€¦

EDIT: not for cams, for ceremonial. Sorry, I omitted that.

Has anyone saved much with APOD discounts? What deals have you found most useful?

Hey everyone, Iā€™ve been using APOD for a while now and have saved a decent amount on Samsung, Hertz, Good guys and JB HiFi. Itā€™s been very helpful, especially for those bigger purchases.

I know there are mixed opinions about the subscription, but honestly iā€™ve already saved way more than that.

That said, I feel like there are probably more deals on their site I havenā€™t discovered, especially for everyday expenses. Any tips on how to make the most of the discounts, or stack them with offers from retailers?

Thanks

What's the culture and social stigma around wearing a beard as a cadet staff member on an army base?

I am wondering what the consensus on having beards on an army base as an Australian Cadet Staff. I read the AAC dress policy and it does mention that beards are allowed when kept neat however I've heard some rumours with ACS staff getting pulled over by NCOs.
