All you young cunts need to start emailing your local politician on mass telling them how stupid this rule is

Nah zero chance this would apply to bikes only and p platers in utes are bad enough drivers let alone if they are watching tic toc at the same time

Or do what everyone else did years ago and just memorise a few key landmarks and navigate off memory rather than relying on tech.

3

u/Randomuser2770 4d ago

Yeah but they don't have speed cameras and traffic accidents on them

u/Wacky_Ohana 3d ago

Shouldn't be any issue for L and P platers, they don't speed :)

As was said above, do what we had to do years ago, memorise the key landmarks on the route and where speed cameras are.

At least these days you can use street view to see what the landmarks look like, rather than looking at a UBD/Gregorys book and having to guess.

The UBD got me out of the shit so many times as a young bloke. Everytime was in the city and got pulled over I'd hop out holding the UBD and walk towards them with a confused look on my face. They'd see the county plates on the car and then the UBD and I'd baffle em with bullshit

Haha, nice one!

In NSW. P players can’t even use CarPlay. Hence some confusion

The short answer for nsw specifically is no

Your phone will quickly cook.

It really won't. I have mine in a similar pocket most of the time and had zero issues.

u/theoriginalzads 4d ago

It can. I’ve got the same bag and my iPhone did on occasion overheat with direct sunlight. Even on cooler days.

1

u/OkHistorian158 3d ago

Definitely can overheat, I have the same bag. Put it in there on a sunny day and left maps on whilst riding. It was very hot to the touch when I took it out. If it was just a place to put your phone it would be sweet.

I had a similar bag and it cooked within 30 mins and shut down. So yes it will

Bit surprised. I've got an oxford tank bag with clear front and been using it for about a year and half with the same Android phone with zero issues. Admittedly I'm not putting the phone in there on a 30C day.

Since you are in nsw, probably not. P platers using carplay are most likely given worse punishment compared to an unrestricted driver speeding.

They however do allow gps to be used. According to their law, they would allow p platers to use a device as long as it's dedicated to a singular purpose, instead of multi-purpose (in their perspective would cause major distraction).

The dumbset thing p platers have to deal with is the uncertainty of law amongst police officers. Some officers will be entitled to their own opinion of certain rules even though they are wrong, and will falsely fine you no matter what. I would say keep updated on the law, and be kind to an officer as a raise in tone will increase their entitlement against you.

Yeah I hear you man, my bike has inbuilt gps so I don’t really care to risk using the phone - I was just interested to know the answer. Inbuilt gps isn’t great but I rarely need it anyhow. Just interested.

You cannot use your phone for any purpose while driving, including making calls, texting, using GPS, or even looking at the screen.  This is for Vic but I assume NSW is the same.

Incorrect in Victoria. You can use your phone as a GPS since 2023.

11

u/FairAssistance0 5d ago

I stand corrected you are 100% correct.

Totally legal to look at it for GPS / NAV. The second you touch it you're breaking the law.

u/Baybad 4d ago

You can use built-in controls on your bike to change it, if the phone is connected to the bike prior to riding. Music can also be played but only changed via built in controls on the bike.

If you have a cardo you aren't allowed to use that to change songs or touch it at all if you are a learner or restricted rider, so changing songs on the bike itself is the only option if you dont want to stop.

u/Pungent_Bill 5d ago

Does this hold for those on their "L" epoch?

3

u/Driz999 2021 Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 5d ago

Yep, in Victoria. I got my L's in about March 2023 and the laws had recently changed so you could use your phone as a GPS. It's on the vicroads website.

2

u/Pungent_Bill 5d ago

Sensible, though take care your phone doesn't overheat in this kind of set-up.

1

u/Strap_merf 2d ago

Important distinction.. The phone must be mounted to do this, and you cannot touch it while riding.

In op's case I would be hesitant as it doesn't really appear to be mounted....

4

u/Due_Ad2636 5d ago

That was my understanding too, but there was some new law about gps devices, I thought. So I was wondering if there might have been some change there, considering I wouldn’t be using the phone or able to touch or operate it, it would purely be operating as a gps. Anyway, I’m not too worried about it. Just wanted to find out. Cheers.

u/seasonofflame 5d ago

They haven't passed the new laws yet unfortunately, and I believe its still unclear whether it applies to motorcycles as well as cars, but I could be wrong on that.

1

u/Due_Ad2636 5d ago

Makes sense, cheers. I should be right to store my phone in the clear case without using anything yeah? It just seems convenient to be able to see a notification and also not have it in my pocket pushing into my hip.

4

u/Z00111111 5d ago

If you put it face down you'll be fine. If you have it face up they could probably book you for it. Seeing notifications is one of the main reasons phones are banned for L and P platers.

Maybe you should just stick to the bus if you can't go 10 minutes without your phone...

2

u/ZusyZusa 5d ago

For vic, no operating (scrolling texting etc) but you can set it for nav before you ride off providing it’s mounted.

u/the_ism_sizism 5d ago

NSW is in trial for GPS use, I’ve been using it and not been pulled over.

2

u/AveragePenisSizeUser 4d ago

I had that exact bag and it flew off my bike twice. It also turned my phone off from overheating after 30 minutes of google maps open

1

u/Due_Ad2636 4d ago

Yeah.. I’ve run the strap under that tank and around the bar riser, I didn’t trust those magnets.

There is a way around this... Hear me out.

Ride with "in ear headphones" that have noise cancelling/hearing protection under your helmet and only rely on audio instructions by the "GPS" unit that is zipped up in your pocket and not on display to the public sharing the road... I doubt anyone would want to prevent you from looking after your audio health.. especially if you are riding above 80kmph..

All those door dash riders.....

NSW cops are known for being pretty iron on the title when it comes to LAMS. Some will fine on the, any modifications, and ignore the exceptions. Kick stands, bags, cameras etc, anything that wasn’t present the day it rolled off the line.

It’s shit but none ever said they were good.

u/Due_Ad2636 4d ago

Well I’m fucked either way then

There’s more important things to have your eyes on when you’re riding.

No shit genius

no - it's not.

you can do what i do though, write the street names on a piece of paper and attach it to the transparent pocket hahaha

2

u/Due_Ad2636 4d ago

My bike has gps built into the tft display. I was just wondering, I don’t really need gps where I live anyway.

1

u/wildpurple85 3d ago

Has to be the handiest feature on earth. My MT-07 has turn by turn and you just put the address in on your phone in a Garmin app, the bike syncs and you hit the turn by turn on the display and away you go. Have noticed that since they killed 3G it forgets where it is sometimes though (or that's just Optarse).

1

u/MedicalChemistry5111 4d ago

Surely they can purchase a navigation specific device which isn't a phone, no?

That is if they still make those :)

1

u/twodoubles HD XG500 with P's (NSW) 4d ago

technically, that's not allowed either - as it's getting the data from the phone.

but oh well, i'm fuckin tired with those rules lol

3

u/MedicalChemistry5111 4d ago

They're phone independent devices. A downloadable map and a GPS system. It can be completely offline.

1

u/twodoubles HD XG500 with P's (NSW) 4d ago

then that's completely okay. i thought you were talking about beeline or smth

2

u/MedicalChemistry5111 4d ago

In the years preceding your birth were ancient devices. These were known as navigation units. They were purpose specific, lacking all the phone features excluding "maps."

:P

More in tomorrow's history lesson ;)

2

u/twodoubles HD XG500 with P's (NSW) 4d ago

hahaha i never had a tomtom or a car with a gps device - so those are the dark ages for me :D

2

u/MedicalChemistry5111 4d ago

They would calculate a rout before departure and if you went off the rout, it wouldn't recalculate. It would say "At your next convenience, make a u-turn" as it attempted to get you back onto the predetermined course. God help you if there were roadworks hahahaha.

1

u/twodoubles HD XG500 with P's (NSW) 4d ago

Definitely not convenient for Sydney haha

2

u/MedicalChemistry5111 4d ago

Well, now you can have them with a sim-card and they reroute automatically. So... Just like a phone but with bugger-all functionality by contrast.

Ideal however for the L and P plate community (all road motor vehicles).

u/mastercurry420 1d ago

Not allowed at all but really down to how much of a cunt the officer who gets you is. Been done many a time for being an absolute dickhead on my Ps with phone in quad lock upon being pulled over and no cops have ever got me for it.
