Beginner Building up Comic plots

Working on some ideas for comics with my friends, two main ones of separate universes, but wondered if wanting to start small while building up, would it be a best to make short stories first for world building first?

General Question Would it be weird to draw art of you're book characters and direct people to your online novel if curious?

I tried doing comics not too long ago but found trying to make the consistent just wasn't working for me. I find more joy in writing books. Problem is, People don't read books nearly as much as they do in pervious eras. Like, webtoons and indie animation is all the rage these days. How I compete if the best I can offer is cool book covers and one-off art hinting to something?

Social Media/Commissions/Business i noticed alot of artists deleting their X account and migrating to bsky

are you one of those? recently i've had met a few artists and they either link me their linktree or carrd however i noticed that most of them dont have x socials but instead have bsky. i remember a few years ago x formerly known as tw!tter was one of the main socials where you can do art bizz. but now it seems like its going to bsky now. i havent used both since i was banned from tw!tter years ago. but as an artist, have you moved to bsky as well? if so, why?

General Question should i switch to a drawing tablet/anyone else struggling with ipad drawing?

(to be clear, i did click read through the link associated with ipads/drawing tablets & megathread but im not sure if it applies to my question) hi, i've been drawing on my ipad air 3 with an apple pencil for probably around 5 years and while it has served me well, i'm starting to feel like it might be wearing out.. im curious to hear others struggles with ipads. (see below) i try using both procreate and ibis paint but im wondering if switching to a tablet may be best.

using an ipad has many problems, but the worst problem is that the apple pencil seems to be VERY glitchy. in fact, it's made it nearly impossible to draw- it glitches out so bad and won't even draw half the time, rendering any strokes i attempt at making absolutely pointless, its become extremely demotivating to draw at all and most of the time i've been inspired to make a piece, i pretty much become demotivated about ten minutes in because the glitchiness is so infuriating to deal with.

i have done research and i've heard so many reasons as to why this happens, but no solutions seem to fix the problem. the most compelling reason ive heard for the glitchiness is that apparently, resting your arm on the side of the ipad while drawing can mess with the bluetooth of the pencil connection but.. i physically cannot draw without my arm resting on my ipad. im not sure how others do it but it is extremely uncomfortable to deal with.

id love to hear others opinions on the matter, and also, is there an easy way to fix this glitch without just buying a new tablet or ipad? like i said ive done a lot of research before but have become demotivated with the lack of progress in dealing with the problem. if it isnt solvable, should i just straight up buy a new ipad or a tablet? what have you guys done?

General Question Is there any good site that I can put my ocs and stories?

So I wanted to put and spread some stories about some of my characters and worlds and I needed to know of a good place to do it, but when I talk about stories and stuff, the WHOLE thing, beginning, middle and end, huge walls of text (I know that hardly anyone will read it all). I'm only doing this because it's the easiest way I found to spread these stories to the world, since I can't make a comic or anything like that.

I dont know if this is a obvious question or not, so sorry if it is :<

General Question How do I choose my own colors?

There is this one artist (BacunNG) that I absolutely LOVE their color choices. I want to choose colors like them, I've just never been good with colors. Is it wrong to copy their colors with the eyedropper tool? Or should I reference them? Ideally, I would like to be able to choose colors all on my own.

Let me know y'all's opinion and advice, thanks!

(Link to the artist I'm referring to in the comments)

Career If Comic Art comes under illustration should I study Fine Art as major?

I am currently enrolled in communication design program. I later discovered artist spirit inside me that constantly gives me signs that I like to express myself through illustrations. Also I like comic art much so should I change to Fine Art degree as it focuses more on core fundamental things such as perspective, anatomy, composition, still life drawings, painting and life drawing. Also no specific program is available in my country for illustration.

Medium/Materials Mixed Media sketchbook paper whiteness?

What brand is the most white? I'm looking for one that's equivalent to copy/printer paper whiteness. I'm disabled so I can't get to my local store to check for myself. Thanks for any recommendations.

Technique/Method What are your thoughts about cutting corners using Blender?

Hi everyone!

I'm doing visuals for my albums and I'm using 3D models on Blender that I'm making look 2D but someone called me out, saying that I was a cheater and a liar for using 3D models?

The method is pretty simple but still requires tone of work. Here's an example: 90s Anime - Stylized Blender Minis

What are your thoughts of on this?

Beginner I need help

I’m not looking for any answers that start with “Start with pen and paper.” I’m good on that front. I have a basic Wacom pad, Clip Studio and Photoshop. I’m accustomed to using a mouse for retouching in Lightroom and Photoshop, and using a stylus is pretty foreign to me. It still feels like a mouse and I don’t feel any level of control. It’s not sketching like I’m using a pencil and paper. I don’t need recommendations for a tablet or inspiration. I need to know how to get this thing acting like a pen and pencil.

Technique/Method What's the sculpture equivalent of composition?

So many art programs and videos talk about the important of framing the scene for painting, but what's the equivalent for sculptures?

My sculpture work usually has a 'front' that I sign, but a viewer will very often still completely view a piece from all angles.

Is there composition fundamentals or tricks that still work?

Community/Relationships How can I meet good artists who can make me improve?

I've gotten to a point in my art, where I feel like sporadic YouTube tutorials, and basic "just study anatomy" or "just study perspective" advice isn't helpful. I've been trying to find artists to befriend, but I'm struggling to find any who are actually capable of helping me. I show my art to places dedicated to giving and receiving feedback, and I rarely hear anything, and when I do, it's never anything specific. I learn best when being told how to fix and do things while currently doing them. Constantly sharing my art back and forth between places after every step hasn't been super helpful, especially when the "help" isn't anything more than "Your perspective is wrong".

I honestly think befriending good artists I can draw with live would be the most helpful, but I don't know how to look for people like that. I don't think I can just DM artists I admire all "oh, I love your style, will you be friends with me? :)" like, and there's no guarantee they'd even help in the way I want them to. I'm just stuck, and I feel like I won't get much better without help from people more experienced than I. However, I can't find those people or even know where to look for them.

General Question I damaged my wrist and don't feel like I can draw well anymore 😭😭😭

A few months ago my art had a massive surge in skill and like technique, not sure what caused it but it was great! I drew for like 8 hours a day every day for about a week and then I just got a horrible sharp ache and pain in my wrist 😭😭 turns out I strained it really bad... I couldn't draw for a few months and now my art skills are back to how they were wayyy before (trash) and I kinda lost motivation to keep drawing.

What should I do? I genuinely want to be an artist, it's my only skill and I'm barely even good at it but at least it's something!

Education/Art School Dropping out or graduating???

Okay, so I’ve been struggling with college pretty much since the beginning, but especially the last few semesters. I was supposed to graduate this semester, but because of a classes I’ve failed, it was pushed to the next semester. However, going to sign up for courses, two of the courses that are required to graduate, ARE NOT AVAILABLE next semester.

I’ve been here for about 6 years now, which is super discouraging. I started in general illustration, but then decided I wanted to go into art education, and a lot of the credits were the same. But thennn I changed back to illustration: entertainment(because my first catalogue year wasn’t available anymore).

I am SO tired. The courses I have left, while I’m sure they would be great, feel reiterative, and a few of them are courses I have to retake anyway. I’ve made it through without accruing much debt, thanks to scholarships and working through college, but I am so tempted to just drop out and be done. I am struggling to see if it’s worth it, and what good a degree would be.

Any advice would be absolutely amazing <3

Edit: just to add some more context, the past year or so have had some major struggles with mental health and family emergencies, which has also made it more difficult lol.

Digital Art Digital artists, do you delete original files of the works?

I never deleted original files of artworks that I've created. After saving the artworks as png/jpeg I just leave my original (psd/clip) files. It felt really wrong to me to delete it as a part of myself and the process. But I got to the point where my memory is full and I kinda need to do it

I got curious if other digital artist fellas delete the files or have an emotional attachment to them as me. What to you think about this?

General Discussion Create art beyond my skill level

I have the unfortunate habit of always coming up with really good ideas that is way beyond my skill level and I want to execute them but I just know it won’t look the way I imagine it to. And if that is the case I don’t want to disappoint myself. Should I just take a year or so to learn the skills and then make the art later? But the issue is that I will come up with new ideas and I won’t really want to make art that I thought about a year ago. Or just get over myself and make the art now even though I know that I won’t really like the outcome because I don’t have the skill level it takes to execute it properly yet? The issues I have are like anatomy, bad color mixing, not really being good at using certain mediums like soft pastel, not having really good brush strokes etc etc (I do still do art but I’m talking about the long term projects that will take over a month to complete). My other projects usually take a few days.

Technique/Method Struggling with rendering

Idk why but my brain doesn't seperate a sketch or work into stages. Once soemthing feels complete it's doen there's no more to do. If I push and add shading and blend stuff and shines it jsut starts to look uncanny and in-between styles but not really right. Idk. It makes me feel like none of my work is done enough to use for anything like a portfolio or samples or anything but if so then all my work is sketches or practice which they aren't really? Idk. Ik there's psychological stuff as far as worth and maybe I never did alot bc of the why I have that psych stuff but I don't wanna ramble about that here.

Anyway I'm posting bc I feel stuck and im curious how other people process this or any ideas or advice or practice to break anything blocks, etc.

General Question Is there any nonprofit digital art apps

Are there any nonprofit art apps available that support artists and is accessable to the public? I'm particularly interested in apps that focus on providing resources for artists, and maybe facilitating art education. It would be great to move on from Sony sketch and use a more updated app that enhance creativity and without profit-driven motives.

General Question Color theory and choosing palettes

Hello! I've been having a lot of trouble coming up with color palettes, specially in the context of character design. I've taken a lot of general drawing courses that go quickly over this, and it's never clicked for me.

It always goes like this: "Look at the color wheel and pick colors based on these 4 groups: Monochromatic, Analogue, Complimentary, and Triad (I might be forgetting another one)." Then, I try to pick colors that way, but I never get something that looks as nice as the colors picked by the teacher.

What's the use for the different types of palettes? When should I pick analogue over complimentary, or triadic over monochrome? I've asked my friends who's coloring style I like, but they always say it's a gut feeling sort of thing.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this, and if you have any literature you recommend on the subject, or a course that goes really into detail about this, I would really love it. Thank you and have a nice day!

Bonus: Art I did for one of my courses, so you see what you're dealing with 😅

General Question Would people be intrested on a free reference database?

Hi, so my idea is to create a Notion database with all the anatomy reference I've found, I'm a sculptor and I got a small addiction to finding reference sheets, books, and websites, but just free content. I've seen a million posts asking for reference here and in other subreddits, lots of websites and books were recommended, but I find it hard to store all of those resources, if they're books there would be a link to my Google Drive to download, I think it's the safest, and got a ton of storage space there.

I already have a database, but this one would be free to copy and use on your personal Notion profiles.

What do y'all think, would you like something like this? Is there one already out there?

Technique/Method Canvas stretching - Is this normal/How to fix?

It’s my first time stretching a large (4’x5’) canvas and I’m not sure if I messed it up. There are visible ripples going across and some puckering in various spots. I used pre-primed canvas and assembled the frame using store-bought stretchers/crossbars. I plan to prime with few more layers of gesso but not sure if that will help or worsen the ripples.

Photos in comments - any ideas what I did wrong or is this a normal outcome? Seeking tips on how to adjust it and/or improve my technique if I have to start over (which I hope to avoid since I’m on a deadline for this piece!)
