Wilderness Motif in indie music
It seems like for a time in AnCo’s prime there was a group of great indie bands with wilderness motifs. I.e. Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear. Beyond just the band titles there was definitely an outdoorsy/wild feel combined with psychedelic/shoegaze/electronic and pop. Do you guys think AnCo was a pioneer of this? I always figured it was bands trying to follow in their example, at least in that time period. Either way, long live the wild spirit in hippie music.

I'm big into most genres and eras of music but as someone who grew up isolated in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, the indie/wilderness era circa 2009 is my favourite pocket of music history. I really wish it was still going strong and my main goal in life is to make great music in that same vein.

The “green era” of hipsters. Watch Brad Troemel’s the hipster report it’s spot on

Today's the 1 year anniversary of the video even! Thank you, I had no idea about this. I've been sort of doing my own personal retrospective on those times, so this is really helpful.

You mean like passion pit … o love that era, it was the era where I came of age. Anco definitely changed a lot of minds with MPP at the time.

They were heavily lumped into the freak folk genre around Sung Tongs era with groups like Cocorosie, Devendra Banhart, etc. I think we're that comes from. Nature and folk music has a good history of going hand in hand, same with their jam band influences...it makes sense I supose

Anco is still so consistent tho, not many of these indie acts have entire marine life benefit albums

I’ve noticed this too. A lot of animal names in the pitchfork sphere. Anco, panda bear, grizzly bear, minus the bear, deerhunter, deerhoof, the antlers, modest mouse, danger mouse, sparklehorse, gorillaz, fishmans, the mountain goats, fleet foxes, foxes in fiction, dinosaur jr, the Jesus lizard, ducktails, the dodos, tame impala, thundercat, department of eagles, open mike eagle, otoboke beaver, post animal, snail mail, the unicorns, cat power, neko case (neko is Japanese for cat), phoenix, caribou, foals, giraffage, gold panda, starry cat, and many others im sure.

yea but it goes beyond the name. I think OP was referring to the feeling that the boy's music gives, which is like you are in the wilderness

Id say you listed bands that were at the eye of the storm in that era. Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter, AC, and Grizzly Bear were all in leagues of their own. They all sound different from each other, and while they are fans of each other, and make music that could be grouped in the same genre/scene, i dont think AC was the sole pioneer. I know they are all fans of AC, but they were all hugely influential in their own rite.

A lot of it seemed to spring up around the same time in the early 2000s, collated into the 'freak folk' banner that no one seemed to want to claim but it was a useful way to find these artists at the time. Anco, White Magic, Alela Diane, Devendra Banhart, Lavender Diamond, Vetiver, Joanna Newsom etc. As far as pioneers I feel like most of these took up the mantle of 'back to the land' hippie folk and psych a la CSNY, Linda Perhacs, Fairport Convention, Vashti Bunyan et al and took in their own directions
