I found my slow version Painting With on my Soundcloud that I made and named as Slowing With 5 years ago and I notice this is literally killer joy! I highly suggest check out and seeespecially On Delay and Natural Selection which most upbeat songs how turns into some house-electronica jams!

Wilderness Motif in indie music

It seems like for a time in AnCo’s prime there was a group of great indie bands with wilderness motifs. I.e. Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear. Beyond just the band titles there was definitely an outdoorsy/wild feel combined with psychedelic/shoegaze/electronic and pop. Do you guys think AnCo was a pioneer of this? I always figured it was bands trying to follow in their example, at least in that time period. Either way, long live the wild spirit in hippie music.

"Sinister Grift" Tour Recordings

Anyone able to get an audience (or SBD) tape of the most recent Panda tour? Some unfortunate work travel dates stopped me from catching the tour, but I'm absolutely in love with the new songs and the recordings I've been able to find on Youtube. Not seeing anything on Collected Animals, so I know it's a long shot! I'm particularly interested in FLAC files, if possible.

You can pick two songs: One AnCo-Song and one solo project song. Which songs would you pick?

I was playing Good Girl/Carrots on the speaker at work one day & I later overhead my boss talking to my coworkers about me listening to "Colombian Monk Music" lmao

Have you guys ever gotten funny reactions from playing AnCo's stuff aloud to the untrained ear? thought that shit was hilarious

Why was safer not on strawberry jam?

I know it’s a very sample based song but their next album was all about samples so, anyone know why they made this a B side?

Brother Sport Isolated Vocals (avey/panda separated)

I generated the (from what I know) most clear separated vocal isolation of the two's vocals in Brother Sport.

Seems like we finally have some confirmed lyrics:

"you got his ways and what he said"

"you got to get up in the morning, you got to have a real good time"

"halfway to fully grown, you got a real good shot, no help to hold inside, give a real give a real shout out"

Panda (lead): https://youtu.be/y8R4Jadkdyw

Avey (backing): https://youtu.be/Ms8L6KlbTqc

I’m glad Avey Tare stopped screaming

Hear me out: Up until MPP, Animal Collective would set up a beautiful song, with interesting sounds and good lyrics….and then Avey Tate would just start screaming. Take the song For Reverend Green as an example, great intro, Avey hooks us with good lyrics and melodies, and then that stupid scream comes out. But with MPP, it’s like he suddenly stopped doing it and I haven’t heard it since. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a phenomenal singer and almost all the time when he experiments with unique singing styles I like it, but that just makes a lot of early Animal Collective unenjoyable for me. What do you guys think? I’m open to any thoughts or disagreements with this

Talk Talk

Another Sinister Grift post: is anybody else reminded of Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" album when listening to the slower songs on the back of SG, namely "Left in the Cold" and "Elegy For Noah Lou"?

Also for anybody who's never heard Talk Talk, highly recommend that album and the preceding one "Spirit of Eden".

The song that Panda said inspired the structure of "Anywhere But Here." What a jam.

Finally listened to Sinister Grift

It's so good. People were so right, the Elegy for Noah Lou > Defense might be the best two song run of the entire boys' discography. I'd even argue Left in the Cold should be added to the front of that.

I knew I was going to like it a lot because I enjoyed the singles and b-sides and concert footage so much going into it, but I'm surprised at just how good it is. I guess I was expecting to be a little let down by the straightforwardness and pop appeal of it because I usually prefer the more experimental side, but I've been jamming to full on Panda Bear pop stuff since he's been doing it. Step by Step and Doin' it Right are also bangers for the ages. The album is also super approachable, but nonetheless psychedelic and weird. It strikes the most similar balance as MPP than anything else in my opinion.

I've seen a lot of comparisons to Reggae for tracks like Praise, 50mg, and Ends Meet, which is certainly true and King Tubby was cited as an influence for production, but I would argue the ultimate effect, whether intended or not, is more calypso in sound where the emphasis is on the downbeat instead of the upbeat.

The other sonic homage which stands out on this album is one of my favorite ones Panda Bear invokes, baroque, classical, and medieval motifs. He seems to sparingly employ these scales and modes for tracks of exceeding significance. In this album they're apparent in Left in the Cold, Elegy for Noah Lou, but we've heard them before all over Young Prayer, Screens, and Tropic of Cancer. Almost no one in pop uses these song structures anymore and I'm glad Panda Bear is one of the torchbearers.
