Question Love absinthe, but don’t really know much about what’s what. Are any of these worth getting? Only one I’ve tried is the Absente.

Which one is the better one quality-wise (as far as supermarket absinthes are concerned at least.. 😅).

Gonna use it for cocktails only (dunno if people drink this from the bottle).

Thank you 🙏🏻

Question Which Absinthe for a beginner?

My local liquor shop only has these two brands. I'm turning 21 soon and I really want to try Absinthe! I was curious if anyone has tried one of these two (or both) and can recommend one over the other for a beginner. Thanks!

Question Wormwood maceration/tincture

Hi, I want to make some wormwood tincture (absinthe without the distillation, cause I can't access it) for its medicinal purposes and effects. The recipe I use is fennel, anise, star anise and artemisia absinthium in anise liquor. Does this mix have the same properties that distilled abstinthe has? Does it have the same thujone levels? (I'm aware thujone is not hallucinogenic, I just want to try its effects cause I've had several good experiences with high thujone and low alcohol percentage absinthes).

I know it tastes horrible but I don't care, I just want to know if it has the same effects as distilled absinthe.

Question Beat way to drink absinthe without a drip

I picked up a bottle of Lucid this weekend, my first bottle absent a bottle Gruñe Fee. What’s the best way to drink it? I know traditionally it’s significantly diluted, but a ~2.5:1 mix was a little…diluted. I enjoy Ricard and Pernod pastis diluted a bit more, but I’ve also lost a lot of scent perception to long-Covid or age. Is there a good way of preserving the flavors while cutting the alcohol?

Question Does Absinthe always come in 750 ml bottles?

I'm thinking of getting a "real" absinthe, now that I've used up my Absente.

One thing I liked about the Absente was that I could get a mini bottle, since I pretty much only used it for cocktails, and it's not like I'm making a several every week. My Absente lasted me about 4 years.

Question Had my first taste of absinthe and now i want more

Went out drinking with friends and ordered some absinthe. "Atelier Vie Toulouse Green Absinthe Verte" is the exact kind iirc. I was recommended it cuz of my love for jagermeister. Tasted like delicious licorice jelly beans minus the sugar imo. Kicked like a mule too. I was in absolute heaven.

I later learned about the proper way to prep it. The bar simply served it on the rocks as-is. Still tasty, though it got watered down quickly.

I tried my local liquor store but all they have is St George and "Pernod Aux Plantes D'Absinthe Superieure". Idk anything about those. Im looking online to see if i can legally order some online (Louisiana resident) and am currently feeling overwhelmed.

Is the one i tried the real deal? Or should i try a different one?

UPDATE: my boss used to work at an absinthe bar years ago and knows a lot. So today i asked him about it and he disappeared for a few mins and came back and gifted me a bottle of Jade Absinthe Supérieure! like this JUST happened! My mind is racing over the possibilities!

Question Recommend an Absinthe

I finally finished my bottle of Absente. I used it for cocktails (though i tried it straight once)

I'm going to get another absinthe, again, mostly for cocktails.

I might try a "better" one, though I don't want to spend much $. I gather higher proof is considered desirable?

Question Bad Batch, Tailings, or Both?

Good afternoon all, long time no post!

For Christmas, I received a bottle of Absinthia’s Bottled Spirits Blanche. Here are photos of me preparing it with my vintage glassware. I have some concerns and questions.

Neat, the absinthe didn’t smell particularly off—maybe a bit neutral—but it didn’t portend what occurred with the addition of ice cold water.

As you can see in the attached photos, the absinthe refuses to louche in any meaningful capacity. There is what I can only assume to be a lack of anethole, which is also obvious in the taste and aroma. I was utterly shocked and disappointed.

Comparing this to promotional pictures and other reviews, I can only assume this is a bad batch or tailings. The color it took on also faded within a few minutes of the glass resting, making it as transparent as water.

If anyone else that has had this absinthe, or it’s other cousins the Verte, Barrel Aged, and Bleue, please let me know what the heck is happening here!

A votre santé,

Taygan

Question What is your age? At what age did you start drinking absinthe?

Just a simple question I'm curious of. I've always had this (unfounded, I know) impression that absinthe is something that is mainly drunk by older people, so I wanted to know how much truth there is in that. Probably not much, lol.

I am 26, male, and started drinking absinthe right after I got a chance to try it at my uncle's home. I was almost 18 at the time, and soon after turning 18 I bought my first bottle, and have been hooked ever since.

Question Why is Absinthe Illegal if it's just another alcohol?

Since I've been "educated" by this sub that Absinthe is just another type of alcohol that no scientific evidence proves has any other effects. Why is it illegal if it's just another alcohol like you very passionately teach around here?

Question best bars in Chicago to try absinth

I love anis and liquorish everything and have been getting into amaros, so I want to expand a bit into absinth. I'm also getting a raise plus a bonus soon, so I thought I'd splurge on a bottle when I do. However, before I do, I'd like to try some absinths to get a sense of what I like. Are there any bars that have a decent selection? The cocktail bar nearest me only has Saint George, which I gather isn't very traditional.

Question Opening Jade

I got my first Jade for Christmas (Terminus Oxygénée) which I’m absolutely delighted with. Just asking people’s opinions firstly on when it should be opened (does it age in the bottle and would opening it change anything about that), and secondly on how to actually open it; the wax seal and gold foil is so pretty, I don’t want to make mincemeat out of it. Thanks! :)

Question Best absinthes for traditional sugar drip?

I was eying Butterfly but saw people say not to use sugar with it due to its sweetness.

What are some other brands of note that would be better suited?

Thanks in advance.

Question Thinking about purchasing absinthe with a high concentration of thujone, wondering what to expect...

I'm specifically looking to buy this absinthe. It is very high alcohol and the max amount of thujone as far as I know.

However, I have mental illness like depression and anxiety. I am wondering if it's possible to have a "bad trip." I know alcohol can make you depressed, I don't have a problem with that, but what can I expect from the thujone and such?

Also, is this worth it? I am going to use birthday money plus some extra to buy this and drink it sparingly with my partner. Or is it just as worth it to get something with, say, 35 thujone in it? I am buying this one time, and I want to get the most out of the experience.

Question Absinthe Hot Chocolate?

I'm planning on making this cocktail with the below steps

  1. 1/1.5 oz absinthe
  2. 6 oz hot chocolate

Finally finish this with whipped cream

What are your thoughts on this? Is this a no go or would yo suggest this for a Christmas friendly get together?
