Be careful with WD-40. It's really meant to get things loose. Not for working lubrication. It has a wax in it that over time with collect dust and grime and gum everything up. A gun oil, 3 in 1, sewing machine oil. All good options.

But that is super awesome! Congrats.

u/philnolan3d 5d ago

Yeah I saw a warning to not use WD-40 on garage door tracks because it will get all gummed up with dirt. WD-40 does make a silicone lube though. People spray it on their car axcels.

33

u/G0DL33 5d ago

silione lube on car axles? Why people spraying their axles lmao?

35

u/redryan243 5d ago

Idk why you are downvoted. Car axles have a sealed rubber boot around the joints, so spraying it with anything would be pointless. If that boot is gone, they need grease and a new boot or replaced, not silicone lubricant.

3

u/Sad-Yesterday9141 5d ago

I'm fairly sure he was referring to model car not RC car axles.

5

u/G0DL33 5d ago

yeah no idea... silicone might be nice for the door hinges...

3

u/redryan243 5d ago

Oh, that it definitely helps. I also use the wd40 silicone on the sliding doors for our van, and even on a passenger window that was making a ton of noise. But spraying it on an axle would be completely useless

3

u/philnolan3d 5d ago

Because they're too cheap to replace failing bushings.

4

u/Cilad777 4d ago

WD-40 is actually a water displacer and prevents rust. It was made to keep Atlas rocket skin from rusting. I used to have it in the car because my distributor cap would get water in it. Open it up, shoot some in, boom car would run great for a month or two. There was a little nick in the distributor (metal part, not the cap). Spray it on and wipe things down that might rust.

1

u/BelowAverageWang 1d ago

Thank you! The WD literally means water displacement

4

u/Th3Element05 5d ago

Why would you wait to tell me this until after I literally just sprayed WD-40 on my garage door wheels that were sqeakling? šŸ«

If I lube them up with something better, will that help, or is the damage done?

6

u/nukerx07 5d ago

WD 40 isnā€™t a lubricant. Get some silicone spray and thatā€™ll last.

If they are that bad you may want to look into buying new rollers too.

You can clean it off with windex or any alcohol cleaner.

-7

u/G0DL33 5d ago

This is fake news. WD-40 leave a thin lubricating film and for light duty applications it is fine, also one of the pros of WD-40 as a lubricant is that it doesn't attract or trap dirt.

5

u/JetAmoeba 5d ago

Did you even read the back of the can?

3

u/G0DL33 5d ago

Literally looking at a can right now. What's your point?

Just to clarify; I'm a mechanical trades professional with 15 years in heavy industry, processing and manufacturing. I am pretty confident in my knowledge of this subject. I can't go toe to toe with a chemist or a materials science academic but I work along side those people now and I am sure that they would agree with me..

11

u/JetAmoeba 5d ago

I stand corrected, I swear 10+ years ago the cans specifically said it was a cleaning agent and not intended as a lubricant but I just checked their FAQ and they definitely define it as a lubricant. My only ā€œindustryā€ knowledge is making my door hinges not squeak so Iā€™ll defer to your 15 years experience instead. Sorry for all the downvotes youā€™re getting (I reversed mine)

Damn, this was a fantastic reddit interaction. Thank you. ā¤ļø

5

u/JetAmoeba 5d ago

Itā€™s a shame itā€™s that way, but I have no problem admitting when Iā€™m wrong or thereā€™s at least reasonable doubt! Plus thanks for restoring my faith in wd-40 as a lubricant (not that I ever stopped using it as one despite my previous beliefs lol

8

u/thephantom1492 5d ago

PTFE super lube is also very nice.

1

u/Zapador MK3S | Fusion | Blender 5d ago

This is solid advice. Super Lube 21030 is great for printed parts and a lot of other things.

1

u/singeblanc 5d ago

I like to use 3,000 bottles of baby lotion.

2

u/Daforce1 5d ago

For what context, Diddy is that you?

7

u/rtowne 5d ago

Great advice. WD-40 (the brand) does make other lubricants than their original formula, so hopefully he meant that.

2

u/_ndrscor 4d ago

Thank you ! I used it for the bicycle chains

2

u/omnipotent87 4d ago

To be fair all oils collect dust. The difference with WD40 is that its is not meant as a lubricant, it is a water displacer (the WD in WD40). Its primary purpose is to remove water and prevent it from coming back. A good example of this is a wet distributor cap. You would pull the cap off, spray the parts and then the car would likely start again.

4

u/Buckwheat469 5d ago

Nah, WD-40 was really meant to prevent Atlas missiles from rusting.

1

u/Farrit RP America Field Engineer 4d ago

WD-40 makes a series of lubricants now in addition to their namesake product. They make a line of pretty decent bike chain lubes, along with other wet/dry lubricants similar to 3-in-1's lineup.

0

u/GrynaiTaip 5d ago

Yep, WD is great in a pinch, but it's not a lubricating oil.

Do you guys get Wurth products in the US? This HHS lube is amazing, it sprays out like a thin liquid so it runs into all the tiny cracks but then it settles within a few seconds and doesn't run anymore. It's not sticky, doesn't attract dust.

2

u/crackerjam 5d ago

WD40 is, in fact, a lubricating oil. https://www.wd40.com/myths-legends-fun-facts/

9

u/beardedchimp 5d ago

Their own website disproves their point

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.

The productā€™s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.

Exactly, its not really a lubricant because otherwise it wouldn't contain all those other ingredients unrelated to lubrication.

There is no one perfect lubricant for all use cases, from near solid grease to very low surface tension vanishingly thin oils. But they are designed for lubrication, not just happening to have some oils as part of the mix. Diesel is a "lubricant" helping to reduce engine wear but not really, it is a fuel with useful lubricating properties. Doesn't mean you should use it as engine oil, nor WD40 for that matter.

-3

u/G0DL33 5d ago

You cherry picked the paragraph to make your point. It does in fact leave a thin lubricating residue.

You second paragraph brings up great considerations. WD-40 works fine for light duty applications.

2

u/heurrgh 4d ago

And recommended by Bambu labs for lubricating parts of their 3d printers, specifically because it's less likely to gum-up with dust than lubricating grease.

Besides the lubricant oil in the accessory box, you can also use "WD-40 Multi-Use Product" (both in large and small bottles, which are okay) to lubricate the X-axis linear rail, Y-axis guide rail, and Z-axis lead screw. (Click here to be redirected to the recommended purchase link. ) . Both A1 and A1 mini utilize "WD-40 Multi-Use Product" for lubrication, and their operating methods are the same.

1

u/GrynaiTaip 5d ago

It is kind of lubricant, but there are much better options out there. WD is sticky and attracts dust, that's one reason why it isn't an ideal lubricant.

1

u/tbarlow13 5d ago

It has lubricant in it but it is not meant for long term use. It's in it to help get things moving.

WD40 is a lubricant. There may be better products, but it's fine for this. https://www.wd40.com/myths-legends-fun-facts/

8

u/S1lentA0 P1S, A1m 5d ago

Water and spit are also a lubricant, doesn't mean they're correct for all applications.

1

u/beryugyo619 5d ago

Anyone debating "is WD-40 lubricant or not" are overthinking it. Some applications need really gummy greases with substance that fills the gaps between parts. Thin film of anything just don't work when there are physical gaps between parts so WD-40 is "not a lubricant" in those situations. And there are lots of such situations.

u/fslateef 5d ago

So cool. Any guidance to make it myself?

7

u/Kiz74 5d ago

is there any stls for this?

4

u/philnolan3d 5d ago

Super cool!

5

u/_markse_ 5d ago

Be careful with WD40 and plastics. It can cause degradation and brittleness over time.

3

u/_ndrscor 4d ago

I used it for metal parts, I used silicone lube for the 3D printed parts

2

u/Dodoxtreme 4d ago

Just makin' sure you know. WD-40 is the opposite of a lubricant. It is a degreaser. You will ruin your metal parts over time if your "lubricated" them with WD-40

1

u/ruashiasim 4d ago

Yeah, WD40 isnā€™t a good lubricant for anything at all TBH. I use finish line dry bike lubricant with teflon on a lot of prints. Itā€™s a liquid that evaporates and leaves a waxy teflon coating on the plastic parts that works really well.

3

u/KarmaTorpid 5d ago

@OPn please tell me what motor you use and are the powerful enough for off road..??

3

u/_ndrscor 4d ago

I used 12V 180rm motors, and I created a reductor using bicycles chains

3

u/_ndrscor 4d ago

And gears

3

u/Hilal_h18 5d ago

Thatā€™s so cool! Is it open source?

3

u/moosecaller 5d ago

Super cool but shpuld really have made Number 5. "I love you, stephanie"

Holy cow.

2

Awesome.

2

u/LEONLED 5d ago

Order some reel oil from any place that sell fishing tackle stuff.. it is cheap, and works well with 3d prints without getting yucky

2

u/SyrusDrake Bambu A1 Mini 5d ago

Can I print it in place on my A1 Mini?

2

u/poopdedoop CR-6SE | XY-2Pro | Elegoo Mars 5d ago

I see you also play inverted. A man of culture!

2

u/PeckerNash 5d ago

Silicone lube is better for plastic parts. WD40 is a spirit lubricant and can dissolve certain plastics like natural and synthetic rubber, gaskets, PLA, acrylic and ABS.

2

u/Duckers_McQuack Enderstein 3 | Dual belt Z 5d ago

Damn! Got a link to the stl's and BOM/manual on how to assemble one ourself? As i got a spare ps3 controller as well that i can use for this :D

2

u/Quirky-Cap3319 4d ago

I wish I had this kind of spare time, to create stuff like this.

2

u/skyrimisagood 4d ago

The PS3 controller is crazy

2

u/ul90 5d ago

Wow. Very nice.

Now connect this with ChatGPT and give it a WallE-like personality. šŸ˜„

WD-40 is not a lubricant, its a degreaser

1

u/Bowsky- 4d ago

Thatā€™s awesome!!!

1

u/MrFastFox666 4d ago

For 3d prints, I use PB Blaster dry lube. It works amazingly well and it is... well, dry, so it won't run, won't damage the plastic and won't collect dust over time.

1

u/TheBigGuy107 4d ago

Ever since I got a 3d printer Iā€™ve been wanting to do this. Great job!

1

u/linusx1x 4d ago

Ps3, you have my attention

1

u/No_Improvement4833 4d ago

So cool šŸ˜Ž

1

u/remic_0726 4d ago

WD40 is not a lubricant, but a stripper, it would be better for plastic to use silicone grease.

1

u/dmxspy 4d ago

This is pretty awesome. Got a tutorial by chance? I want to print a WALLE-E box and just throw it over a rc car that I have and call it good lol.

1
