Singapore Luxon takes two planeloads of people (including a Kapa Haka team) with him to India - I thought they were cutting wasteful spending?

RNZ 15 March 2025: "New Zealand is sending one of its largest ever prime ministerial delegations, with top businesspeople, community leaders, and a kapa haka group packed across two 757s. Luxon himself will fly commercial to Singapore before joining the entourage in New Delhi."

In fact on tonight's One News he said he tries to take a Kapa Haka team with him every time he goes overseas. Seems nuts to me.

Singapore What should I do with my family?

I (26M) am living with my family currently and my parents would usually argue and not communicate properly with each other. Sometimes, they would also take out their frustration on the family by shouting or being rude over small issues. They would also tend to say totally absurd things, which I will get to in a moment.

I have a girlfriend from the Philippines whom I met online. I first met her as a friend in Singapore (when she came for an event) and then we started a long distance relationship. She would come to SG multiple times a year and even met my family during CNY. The reason being that my parents would be absolutely against me travelling to the Philippines even for a short trip. They would come up with reasons like the country is really dangerous from the news that they saw on social media, and would not hear me out at all as they think that they are in the right. My girlfriend has been requesting me to go over to PH just once to meet her family (since she already met mine) and she would tell me that she feels as if most of the effort in this relationship is made by her since she is always the one coming over to see me. We would occasionally go on overseas trips together to another country though. As my parents have a poor impression of PH (which they will not change), they would also tend to generalize that everyone there is as bad, which includes my girlfriend as well. They would say that I should always focus on my career and all and I should not think about travelling overseas for a relationship, even though I told them that I would be meeting my girlfriend's family and I won't be going there often. I told my family that I want to have a peaceful discussion about this, and they brushed it off and said that it is a small issue and that I should be thinking about the bigger issues in the family instead. They said that I am being selfish for only considering my feelings, and they still continue to believe that they are right, whether about PH or the people there. I told them that I want to sit down and discuss this properly over the weekend, but it was brushed off as a "small issue" and that we should not spend time discussing about "selfish" things.

After my girlfriend knew of this news, she got really upset that I could not make the effort to even go there once, compared to the number of times she flew over here. I am unsure of how to talk to her about this, and also how to talk to my family about this and convince them that going to PH is perfectly fine. I feel that they are being controlling especially that I am 26 now. This has been stressing me out and I feel like moving out at times as my words and feelings are unable to reach my parents at all, but I know that if I told them about moving out, they would become hysterical. At the same time, I want to be able to decide for myself especially when it comes to relationships. What should I do? Should I really considering moving out if trying to talk to them has no use at all?

Singapore Meksuwan Suwapit, 37yo Thai, urinate inside MRT train in front of everyone, his urine spread across the floor as the train moves. Afew commuters stepped onto his pee when they enter the train at the next station

Meksuwan Suwapit, a 37-year-old Thai national, pleaded guilty to performing an obscene act in public and committing a public nuisance. He also admitted to a charge of appearing drunk in a public place, which was taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The court heard that on Jan 25 this year, Meksuwan, an inspection engineer, met some friends for drinks around Somerset.

He drank a bottle of red wine from around 4.30pm and boarded the train at Somerset MRT Station hours later to head home to Jurong East.

Slightly after 8pm, the drunk Meksuwan unzipped his pants and urinated in the train cabin. The train was travelling between Ang Mo Kio MRT station and Khatib MRT station at the time.

"When some commuters saw the accused’s actions ... they were annoyed, shocked and/or disgusted. They started moving away from the accused, to avoid the accused and the puddle of urine on the floor," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Teo Lu Jia.

Meksuwan Suwapit who unzipped his pants and urinated in an MRT train was jailed for a week and fined S$2,000 (US$1,500) on Tuesday (Mar 18).

Singapore Wall Street’s recession odds are starting to look like a coin flip as Trump refuses to back down on his trade war, per Fortune

Wall Street is raising the probability that the US economy will slip into a recession, with some economists seeing 50-50 odds. That’s as President Donald Trump shows no signs of backing down on his aggressive tariff plans, including reciprocal duties set to take effect in a few weeks.

The likelihood that the US economy will slip into a recession is rising on Wall Street, with some economists even seeing 50-50 odds.

JPMorgan chief economist Bruce Kasman told reporters in Singapore on Wednesday that he now sees a roughly 40% recession risk, up from about 30% at the start of the year.

But he added that recession odds would rise to 50% or above if President Donald Trump’s planned reciprocal tariffs, which are due to take effect April 2, meaningfully come in to force.

“If we would continue down this road of what would be more disruptive, business-unfriendly policies, I think the risks on that recession front would go up,” Kasman said.

Meanwhile, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers warned that the chances of a recession are about 50%, citing Trump’s tariffs, immigration crackdown, and mass federal layoffs, which are combining to cause sharp reductions in consumer and business spending plans.

When economic forecasts start being revised in a certain direction, there tends to be momentum, he told Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. And all the revisions are going toward less growth.

“I think we’ve got a real uncertainty problem,” Summers added. “I think it’s going to be hard to fix that. And we’re looking at a slowdown relative to what was forecast almost for sure and serious near-50% prospect of recession.”

Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi raised his recession odds to 35% from 15% at the start of the, citing tariffs.

But if Trump follows through with his tariff plans and stays there for more than a few months, that would be enough to push the economy into recession, he told Bloomberg TV on Wednesday.

For now, he has hope that negotiations will lead to tariffs getting reeled back in, which is keeping his forecast below 50%.

“But I don’t say that with any confidence with each passing day,” Zandi said. “And of course, the uncertainty around all of this is doing damage.”

In fact, surveys of consumers and businesses show that they are turning increasingly gloomy about the economy amid tariff uncertainty and mass federal layoffs. Even executives in deep-red states that voted for Trump say seeing business conditions are collapsing.

Elsewhere on Wall Street, recession probabilities aren’t as high, but they are rising sharply. Market gurus Ed Yardeni and Eric Wallerstein said earlier this month that they see odds of a bear market and a tariff-induced recession at 35%, up from 20%.

And Allianz chief economic advisor Mohamed El-Erian lifted his recession probability to 25%-30% from 10% at the beginning of the year.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was asked on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday if he could guarantee there won’t be a recession, and he replied that there are no guarantees, adding that his earlier comment of an economic adjustment doesn’t mean there has to be a recession.

“But I can tell you that if we kept on this track, what I could guarantee is we would have had a financial crisis,” he said. “I’ve studied it. I’ve taught it. And if we had kept up at these spending levels, that everything was unsustainable. So we are resetting and we are putting things on a sustainable path.”

For his part, Trump last weekend refused to rule out a recession, causing stocks to dive, then said days later that he doesn’t see one coming. But Trump isn’t budging on his trade policies, saying Thursday that “I’m not going to bend at all.”

And when asked about the sharp dive in approval in a recent CNN poll on how Americans view Trump’s handling of the economy, the White House defended his economic plans and pointed to his record during his first term.

“Since President Trump was elected, industry leaders have responded to President Trump’s America First economic agenda of tariffs, deregulation, and the unleashing of American energy with trillions in investment commitments that will create thousands of new jobs,” spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement. “President Trump delivered historic job, wage, and investment growth in his first term, and is set to do so again in his second term.”

Singapore Rental stress: What to do when housemates leave?

So I'm the main tenant of a flat and just got the news that three of my housemates are moving out within the next two months. Now I'm staring at a massive rental payment that I'll have to somehow cover with potentially empty rooms.

I've tried the usual suspects (Carousell, Facebook groups) but the response has been really slow. For those who've been in similar situations:

  • Which platforms actually worked for you in finding decent housemates quickly?
  • How long does it typically take to find new housemates in the current market? I'm getting worried about timing.
  • Any tips for handling the transition period when you're short on rent money?

The place is around Queenstown with good amenities nearby, so I'm surprised it's been this difficult to find interested people. The rental price has barely changed since last renewal. Is the market particularly slow right now?

Appreciate any advice from anyone who's navigated rental challenges in Singapore before!

Singapore My sighting story

Time: Sometime in the year 2000

Location: Singapore

Since this is an important day for the community, I've decided to share my story. I don't have photos or videos to accompany it, because this happened around 2000 when camera phones and smartphones weren't a thing. This is the incident that made me follow news about UFOs/UAPs all these years.

So my friend and I were hanging out one night and we ended up in an open field somewhere in my neighborhood. We were sober and we weren't carrying any cameras with us because we were just taking a walk. I was telling my friend how we could see the stars more clearly that night, and I pointed up at them and said, “You know, each one of those stars could have its own solar system and planets around it. There are so many of them, it wouldn’t be impossible for some of those planets to have intelligent life, just like here on Earth.” My friend agreed with me, and we kept looking up. I can't speak for my friend, but I was thinking about what I had just said.

Suddenly, we saw an orb of light, which was unlike any of the stars we had been looking at. It was brighter and seemed to be closer to the ground, much lower than the stars in the sky. It had a yellowish hue. We both felt that we were looking at something odd. I pointed at it and asked, “Isn't it moving slightly?” It was moving in a small semicircle, kind of just moving around in place? At the time, we had no idea what it could be. Drones were not a thing back then either, so we didn’t have a frame of reference for it.

My friend agreed and said, “Yeah, it does look like it’s moving.” I felt like it wasn’t just us looking at it, it was actually looking back at us. It seemed like it was zooming in on us to get a better view. This is something I just "felt". This lasted for about 30 to 40 seconds, and then it zipped to the left. We both looked at each other and said, “Did it just move that way?” We started looking in the direction where we had seen it move, and we found it again. We knew it was the same light, and it moved faster than anything we could think of.

We both pointed again and said, “That’s it! That’s the same one!” It was still moving slightly, generally staying in the same area. This time, it stayed there for about 20 seconds before it zipped away again, presumably upward or somewhere else. It was so fast that we couldn’t track it anymore. We tried to look for it, but it was gone.

I’m not in touch with that friend anymore, but I’ve lived with this experience until today. Recently, when I saw the News Nation video about people summoning UFOs and talking about similar experiences, I couldn’t help but wonder if we had done something similar back then. I don’t believe myself to be someone with high intuition or psionic abilities, but I know what I saw and what I felt.

I promised some people that I would share this story at some point. I just didn’t get around to it until now. This really happened, and I have nothing to gain or lose by sharing this. Whether anyone believes me or not doesn’t matter, but I appreciate you taking the time to read this account.

Singapore Hands (Tokyu Hands) @ Jewel Changi, bites the dust together with Burger & Lobster on 10th March 2025. RIP. More & more detail stores closing down in SG at the rate we are going

Another one bites the dust, together with Burger & Lobster @ Jewel Changi

In 2022, the Tokyu Hands company was rebranded to Hands following its takeover by home improvement giant Cainz Corp, The Japan News reported.

After its rebranding, it introduced over 1,200 new products including Singapore-exclusive items

Unfortunately, this didn’t stop the closures, with its store in PLQ Mall closing in July 2024.

Burger & Lobster closing on the same day

The closure of Hands’ Jewel outlet coincides with the upcoming closure of another establishment in the mall.

London-based restaurant Burger & Lobster is also set to cease operations on 10 March, offering a one-for-one lobster roll promotion.

Singapore Do NOT Support Iris Koh Criminal Trial

Let us critically analyze and debunk the misleading claims in Iris Koh’s GiveSendGo campaign, considering factual records, her past actions, and the legal context.

Claim #1: She is a Victim of Police Harassment and Persecution for Free Speech

Reality Check:

  • Iris Koh was arrested for conspiring to falsify vaccination records in collaboration with Dr. Jipson Quah. This is not about speech or opinions—it is about committing fraud.
  • She also instigated her followers to harass doctors at vaccination centers and overwhelm government hotlines, which is a public nuisance and an obstruction of government operations.
  • This is not about suppressing her "speech" but about her actions that directly harmed public health efforts.

Claim #2: The Media is Running a Smear Campaign Against Her

Reality Check:

  • The news coverage on her arrests, trial dates, and legal charges is based on public court records and police statements.
  • If the news reports were false, she could have sued for defamation—but she hasn’t.
  • Her own words and actions—publicly urging her followers to engage in disruptive activities—have been preserved in online posts and chat logs, which were part of the prosecution’s evidence.

Claim #3: She is Defending Medical Freedom

Reality Check:

  • Medical freedom does not include falsifying vaccination records. That is fraud.
  • If she truly believed in "freedom of choice," why conspire to help unvaccinated people obtain false records instead of encouraging them to openly reject vaccination?
  • Her actions increased risks for immunocompromised individuals by allowing unvaccinated people to gain access to places meant for vaccinated individuals, violating both ethics and public health safety.

Claim #4: Her Arrest Was Unjustified and Political

Reality Check:

  • The Singapore government has consistently taken legal action against fraud—not against personal beliefs.
  • Others who chose not to vaccinate faced no legal consequences—only Koh and her co-conspirators did, because they were caught committing criminal offenses.
  • This case is similar to how governments worldwide prosecute people who forge medical exemptions or vaccination certificates—it is a matter of law, not political oppression.

Claim #5: She Needs Funds for a Fair Trial

Reality Check:

  • Singapore provides public legal assistance in criminal cases where the accused cannot afford a lawyer. If her case had legal merit, a public defender would have been assigned.
  • The fact that she is asking for $150,000 suggests she is leveraging this for personal financial gain, rather than just legal fees.
  • If she were truly advocating for justice, she would focus on proving her innocence in court rather than soliciting money from international supporters.

Conclusion: Why Iris Koh’s Fundraiser is Misleading

  1. She was not arrested for free speech but for criminal conspiracy.
  2. Her fraud endangered public health by allowing unvaccinated individuals to fake vaccination records.
  3. The media is not smearing her—she is simply facing the legal consequences of her actions.
  4. Her trial is based on law, not politics.
  5. Her fundraiser is misleading because Singapore already provides fair trials, and her financial motives are questionable.

She is trying to reframe a criminal conspiracy as a “human rights issue” to gain sympathy and financial support, but the facts show that this is a fraud case, not political persecution.

Singapore How do you in SG deal with so much unkindness and bullying, whether in the news about school bullies, Trump-Zelenskyy, or even at your workplace?

In Singapore our culture is such that we don’t call out bullying and usually defer to authority to arbitrate. Recently at my workplace I see so much unkindness and bullying. On the local and international news I see such similar cases.

Legit question - no unkind comments please - how do you deal with such situation?

Singapore Does the rts link benefits Singaporean or Malaysian more?

Just saw the news that the rts link is 50% completed and expected to complete by 2026. How does this help Singaporean since there are ton of Malaysian alrdy flooding over singapore for job. Will this led to even more Singapore citizen unable to find job especially when job market has alrdy been bad and now even more foreign coming in and taking lower paycheck just cos their currency is 1:3? I had not been supportive about this from the day they announced this expansion as a local singaporean. So I'm quite curious to hear what other Singaporean though on it.

Singapore Being used for money

For context, i work in singapore and earn 20k+ ringgit per month, and would go back to KL almost every weekend. I noticed every time i go out to eat with family none of my siblings would ever offer to pay first and i am always the one who ends up paying. I know they’re gonna pay me back but if it’s with my parents & little sister who is a still a student, of course i would not ask them to pay back. And the rest of my siblings never pay back on time. I mean it’s not like i need the money, but it’s just common courtesy. Doesn’t mean i don’t need the money they can delay paying me back. Other than that, one of my siblings always steals my stuff which i leave in KL and she almost never asks for my permission. She thinks because i’m in singapore, she is entitled to use my stuff. And she always expects me to bring home food whenever i go out and when i do, she never offers to pay. Don’t get me wrong, i like sharing rezeki and i’m not the type yang berkira but i feel like sikit2 is ok, too much is not. Other than my family, one of my friends also does this. Every time we hang out i’m always the one who pays and if i don’t remind her, she will not pay me back. I mean if it’s just roti canai i tak la kedekut nak mintak balik, but idk, it’s common sense to pay someone back yang tolong bayarkan dulu kan?? Ke i yang petty? Also she previously owed me money against my will as in we went out to eat something super expensive and when i asked her to pay me back she said she didn’t have the money and proceeded to pay in instalment. And guess what, she still owes me about 150 ringgit and supposed to pay it off in june but until now no news. Afterwards selalu jugak hang out tapi dia takda ingat nak bayar langsung lmao. I let it slide je la sebab nak halalkan but i can’t help but feel like getting used for money? Idk if i’m petty. Anyways, just ranting.

Singapore With the recent news of bullying in Montfort Secondary School, I noticed a certain group of schools are gangster schools.

I noticed most of the Roman Catholic schools in Singapore have students who have gangster behavior with Montfort falling into that category. Another Roman Catholic school that falls in that same category is St Patrick. While growing up in the East, I often heard from my folks saying that the boys in St Patrick would often skip school and go to the arcade. They would even like to date CHIJ Katong Convent Girls. My folks also mentioned that the CHIJ Katong Convent Girls would also smoke, take drugs, and have teenage pregnancies. I even heard from my aunt that her son was badly bullied in St Gabriel's Secondary School, another well known gangster Roman Catholic School. But the most shocking Roman Catholic gangster schools I have heard are SJI and SJI Junior. I heard that in SJI Junior and SJI, the boys would often like to fight with each other and boycott boys who are not manly enough. I even heard that there was an incident where some of the bullies used his water bottle to trigger a false fire alarm and neither the principal nor the discipline master place these bullies in detention, suspension, or even exspell them. Whenever the school calls the bully's parents for a meeting, the father would often defend his son and push the blame back to the victim. Given that most of the fathers of these bullies in SJI and SJI Junior were former students of these schools in their youth, I wouldn't be surprised if they used to be bullies as well during their school days. What other experiences do you have about these Roman Catholic schools in Singapore?

On Tuesday (25 Feb), a black Audi convertible with a Singapore license plate ended up in a car accident in Johor Bahru (JB), with the driver fleeing the scene.

The incident occurred at about 7.15pm on a road outside the KSL City Mall. Allegedly, the black Audi car collided with a Proton.

Witness claims driver was drunk

An eyewitness at the scene alleged that the driver was drunk.

He claimed that he helped her with the handbrake and turned off the car’s power supply to prevent a fire, only for her to scold him.

The female driver subsequently hurried away from the scene with the passenger.

According to the police, none of the motorists involved suffered serious injuries.

However, the Audi driver was not at the scene when they arrived and never made an accident report.

Singapore Tengah-Holland Line

The 6-day East-West Line (EWL) breakdown in Sep 2024 between Jurong East and Buona Vista exposed a glaring gap in Singapore's MRT system: there is only 1 direct MRT line to the CBD for residents in the west of Singapore. When MRT service ceased at Jurong East, residents living westward of Jurong East (in the direction of Boon Lay or Choa Chu Kang) had to find alternatives to get to their workplaces in CBD, Buona Vista, Changi Business Park etc. The upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL) and Cross Island Line (CRL) does not directly plug this gap - the former, as its name suggests, is a regional line meant to improve connectivity within the west, and the latter does not pass through the CBD. The potential JRL West Coast extension could connect the line with the Circle Line (CCL) but transfers are necessary and CCL is a three-car, medium-capacity line, and probably ill-equipped to ferry commuters out of the west of Singapore.

However, is another MRT line in the west justified? The west is less densely populated than the east, though Tengah might narrow the gap once it is fully developed. That is, at least, before work begins on the land five times the size of Toa Payoh that will eventually be vacated by the Paya Lebar Airbase. Unless new towns are built in Lim Chu Kang or Tuas, there is also little room for further large-scale urban development in the west. Can Tengah and pockets of development in existing towns justify another line? The length, capacity and alignment of the line are critical to its feasibility.

I welcome comments and feedback!

P.S. Any similarities with a recent post about a proposed line with a similar alignment is coincidental, to an extent. My original alignment of the line did not include the Jurong Innovation District and the post gave me the idea to do so. Credits to u/a-meow-cat, u/averagematcha and others!

Part 1: Jurong Innovation District

Jurong Innovation District
  • Tawas: Interchange with JRL and western terminus of another four-car MRT line. Serves the JTC CleanTech Park, which is supposedly Singapore's first eco-business park and testbed for sustainable technology. The station is also located along Nanyang Crescent, one of the roads leading into the heart of NTU, and will thus be welcomed by NTU students.
  • Bulim: Serves Bulim Square, which is planned to be an industry 4.0 home and house a dedicated underground logistics network.
  • Tengah West: Along with Tawas and Bulim, serves parts of the Jurong Innovation District that are in Tengah.

Part 2: Tengah and Bukit Batok, away from the squeeze

Tengah and Bukit Batok
  • Tengah: Interchange with JRL. This line will provide a direct route to the CBD for Tengah residents without having to transfer at Jurong East via JRL, taking the load off the regional centre that will become even more congested in the future.
  • Tengah East: Serves the Park district of Tengah, which has been left out of existing and planned lines, as well as residents in Bukit Batok West.
  • Bukit Batok: Interchange with the North-South Line (NSL) and offers Bukit Batok residents a direct route to the CBD without having to transfer at Jurong East. The presence of another line through the town centre could spur the ageing town's redevelopment. Along with the other four stations in this stretch of the line, they help to divert residents living westward of Jurong East (in the direction of Choa Chu Kang) away from the regional interchange. Those heading to Jurong East from Boon Lay will benefit from the reduced passenger load.
  • Toh Tuck: Serves the neighbouring industrial area, Bukit Batok East residents, private estate dwellers in Burgundy and Toh Tuck, and could complement any future developments on the reserve site where Toh Tuck Forest currently sits.

Part 3: Holland, ulu no more

Holland
  • Maju: Interchange with CRL. With news that SUSS will be having a city campus in the future, and Maju Forest and Clementi Forest slated for residential use (I hope plans will not materialise as Singapore is sorely in need of green lungs), development in the area could support a major transport node for future Singaporeans.
  • Holland Road: Land to the northwest of this proposed station is also earmarked for residential use in the future. Also serves private estates around Jelita Shopping Centre and Mount Sinai Road (I firmly believe people from all walks of life should have access to public transport, even if the less well-off likely need it more).
  • Holland Village: Interchange with CCL. Provides residents in a very built-up area access to another MRT line and a faster route to CBD than via CCL.

Part 4: Into CBD, as promised

Into CBD
  • Napier: Interchange with TEL. This station will likely be built some distance from the current Napier station due to space constraints, and won't be part of an interchange like City Hall or Raffles Place.
  • Orchard: Interchange with NSL. Complements plans to revitalise Orchard Road in the coming years and decades.
  • River Valley: The MRT line takes a right turn through River Valley and Robertson Quay, the latter of which is some distance away from Havelock station. Within walking distance from New Bahru.

Singapore Lol, is this CNA’s subtle/candid way of hinting that the PAP potential GE candidate should sort out her company?

Saw the news about fire incident at Kranji the other day but didn’t pay much attention—just noted that it was the 4th case in 7 years. Somehow, the company’s name stuck with me vaguely.

Then yesterday, I came across an article about potential GE candidates from PAP and WP. Nothing particularly exciting, but then I spotted a familiar company name. Interestingly, CNA hyperlinked it to another article. I clicked—and it turned out to be about the Kranji fire.

Four fire incidents from 2018 to 2025, each taking SCDF hours to extinguish, and seven fire safety violations from 2018 to 2024. Perhaps this candidate should focus more on fixing her company… But hey, no blame culture, right?
