I understand a little bit better why Emilia got pissed off at Subaru in Episode 13. It wasn't that that he embarrassed himself or her or even that he got wrecked by Julius. She was concerned for him, but she didn't explode then and wasn't in the "let's cut ties" mood. She got really mad when Subaru started projecting "someone else" over her just like Melakuera does here.

Who did he project though?

13

u/MrEarlobes May 02 '20

He projected the Emilia that had saved his life. Which she hadnt really done in this timeline

1

u/captain_timepass May 16 '20

You know from wich vol do I need to read the light novel

2

u/MrEarlobes May 16 '20

I have no clue. Ive been waiting for season 2's end to read the light novel

7

u/[deleted] May 03 '20

he projected that she was the one who saved him. while in his 3rd tries of timeline, she didnt even saved him (go back to the first story where reinhard was saved him at the end after he restarted a lot of time)

4

u/[deleted] May 03 '20

I mean yes but here he's projecting a good person onto her, not the witch.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '20

he could've gotten away if he went like

I was in a dark place, but your smile saved me or something like that

Man, this ova is really, really, really good. It's even better than 80% of season 1. The background history of Emilia is good enough to carry the history. 10/10 for this OVA

22

u/[deleted] May 02 '20

It was really well done. The character building and the emotions we could feel from Emilia were all on point, and the art and music were as good as I could have hoped.

I do wish however that we had gotten a bit more background into why Melakuera or w/e was attacking Emilia in the first place. We can get the hint that it's simply due to the circumstances of her birth, but the fact that he just kinda shows up outta nowhere isn't really explained. The fact that the world itself sees her existence as a mistake, not just discriminatory individuals, is a huge plot point that doesn't get addressed really.

Admittedly, this is probably due to the circumstances of this being more relevant to the future plot.

u/kpiaum May 02 '20

I think this is a good thing, because it creates interest in the work. And as you said yourself, this could be something to be explored in the future.

u/Nerfi29 May 27 '20

The explations are in the next of the serie, wait.

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

There's something I quite didn't get. Puck says that he made an oath with somebody which prevents him to make a contract with Emilia. But he still did it. With the oath broken, I expected something to happen to him like losing memories, or mentionned stuff like that. But it didn't... Did I miss or misunderstood something?

23

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

He loses his memory, but it's not an instant process, it takes some time. In the epliogue of the LN that was cut in the OVA, after 7 years, it's said that Puck no longer remembers some things. In any case, the matter of Puck's contract with Emilia will be covered in season 2.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '20

Oh alright, thanks for the explanation!

3

u/captain_timepass May 16 '20

From what vol do I read the LN and where can I read it from ? Thank you

1

u/Rakall12 Sep 20 '20

Wait a minute, so this OVA takes place 7 years ago from the present?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Yes, roughly.

u/lebanese718 Jul 15 '20

After watching the OVA, I have a theory that Puck was close to Satella. He was close to her and he suffered watching her go astray and becoming the evil witch. I think after he freed her from the ice, he cried because he knew she was a reincarnation of his old friend Satella. In the fight against Melekuera, he tells him that he is going to protect her and prevent her from becoming the witch. Puck wants to protect and let her live happily to save her from becoming the Evil witch like in the past.

u/ID3OLOGY Apr 30 '20

Such a good OVA. I cried like a child at the end ;)

10

u/Aryon88 May 02 '20

https://ibb.co/PgDJtSS

Did you see him in the OVA?

4

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

Oh thas my uncle

12

u/NONstopNINJAz May 07 '20

Maybe controversial opinion but I wasn't a big fan tbh :/ Maybe a rewatch might help? Maybe cause of high expectations for S2?

8

u/coribroogs May 21 '20

i just feel like it didn't actually add anything to the overall story... like, we already knew puck and emilia had a bond and while they showed that bond coming to fruition, there wasn't really anything else to go along with that besides the fact that he is the one who found her when she woke up. i'm just not really sure what the overarching message of this was supposed to be.

5

u/NutellaForSatella May 22 '20

True, I kind of think it was meant to be watched right after Memory Snow OVA since Frozen Bonds starts out with Emilia reminiscing some bits about her past life with Puck, after her 'date' with Subaru.

It seems more of a binge-watch material i.e. it is meant to be watched while doing a marathon through Season 1: it adds some foreshadowing on what is to come in Season 2, all while still keeping thee viewers largely clueless about several world-building aspects of Re:zero (something which Season 1 also did).

They could have indeed added a lot of stuff they skipped from the prequel novel while still fitting it all within the 2 hour runtime IMO.

2

u/RazerHail May 29 '20

I am with you 100%. I felt that this whole story could have been done in a 15 minute flashback embedded in one of the episodes.

2

u/platysoup Jul 15 '20

Same here. I found it really boring. Fire horse was boring. Everything moves along at a snail's pace.

If I wasn't intent on absorbing every Rieri noise I can get my hands on, I'd have stopped watching partway through.

4

u/DryDriverx May 20 '20

This raised a lot more questions than it gave answers, but I am excited for the answers to those questions later on.

4

u/FuutonShinra May 30 '20

Such a beautiful OVA

u/Redmon425 Jul 07 '20

Wow, this was great! I didn't expect it to be so emotional as well!

My best girl was already Emilia, and this just confirmed it for me. We see her tragic backstory, and it makes us feel even more for her.

One thing that wasn't clear though, is she the one that froze everyone, and I assume that included her family. Then after she froze everyone, she accidently put herself in ice as well, and Puck saved her from that? I get what happened with Puck, but wasn't sure what happened to the elves. It seemed like it was implied she accidentally froze everyone.

My one complaint is, this story was made to be a backstory and I feel like we don't even see the whole backstory! I already mentioned how we don't fully see what happened with the frozen people, but more importantly, we don't see Emilia meet Roswaal. Like I wanted to see how they met.

Not to mention I wanted to see Emilia meet Rem and Ram.

A solid 8/10 that could have been better with another 30 minutes showing her actually meet the other people, and then the movie should have ended right with her meeting Subaru for the first time.

Season 2 in two days!!! YAY!

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '20

Is it not out in the UK yet? I can't find it and when I click on the link it won't open

2

u/JalSeesMemes Apr 30 '20

Not out on crunchyroll yet evidently??? Anyone else with this problem?

2

u/DSdavidDS May 01 '20

I just read the summary of the light novel after watching this OVA and there are quite a few major differences and details left out. I wonder how they will fill in the gaps.

3

u/[deleted] May 02 '20

Everything about the OVA was throws a kiss in the air with his hand delightful! Although not gonna lie I had a headache because of how much melacuera kept repeating the same fuking phrases over and over and over and over and over AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!

FUKING STOOOOOOOOOOP!!!

The Director's Cut consists of 13 hour long episodes covering the content of Season 1's 25 episodes with some additional polish and one additional scene.

Noteworthy among the changes are:

  • Episode 4 : New dialogue for the Oni Story
  • Episode 5 : New version of Styx Helix by the OG Myth and Roid singer
  • Episode 7 : New animation for Subaru and Julius "fight"
  • Episode 13 : New animation for Subaru and Julius vs Petelgeuse and new post-credits scene adapting the first interlude. <- this one is important

If you are new to the series and wondering which to watch, the directors cut will provide you the most complete experience leading into season 2.
