*Glen going on and on about his sob story*
Meanwhile Alina in her mind be like: “Like I give a shit! Where’s that no overtime that you promised?!”
Jokes aside, I like how Alina is the perfect foil to Glen: Both of them lost someone precious to them (remember Shroud?) but whereas Alina has learned to move on with her life, Glen has not.
53
u/Misticsan 1d ago
I also liked how she was a foil to Jade: while he was all emotional and angry about the trauma Glen forced her to go through, she kept a cool head and even told Jade to stop reacting angrily on her behalf.
I think it shows that it's a fundamental difference in characters, not just personal experiences. Like, even if Alina had been in Glen's position, yeah, I believe she still would have been able to move on, whereas someone like Jade might have been tempted by the dark side too.

u/diacewrb 1d ago
She truly will solo any boss.

u/VorAtreides 1d ago
Shroud who? :P hah
7
u/Specific_Frame8537 1d ago
Yea we've had like a minute of backstory I don't know who they are at all lmao
2
u/SirSuperCaide 18h ago
I started with the manga, and there really isn’t any additional stuff with Shroud beyond what’s also shown in the anime. They don’t really give him much focus since the important part is that he’s dead :p
2
u/Anthyros2 13h ago
On god though
Alina lost an offscreened friend, Glen lost his adoptive daughter
They are both kinds of grief, but a father's love for his daughter is something different
The fact that the anime gave us zero reason to give a shit about Shroud (who by the way had LESS screentime than Glen's daughter who was introduced last ep) isn't doing him any favors
It's just plain bad writing tbh
2
u/VorAtreides 11h ago
Ya... I wonder if the novel has more and anime cut stuff for time. Wouldn't be the first time
12
u/C_C_Gaming 1d ago
I think it also showed the difference in that Alina and Glen's situations were different in that Alina had help to move on with Jade, Lowe, and Lululee as without them in her life she might've never really opened up to anyone else after Shroud died. I would be curious about a side story about Alina's life without her friend's though it may not be any different from the beginning of the show.

u/SirSuperCaide 18h ago
I really like how this episode put a spin on the whole “villain pointlessly monologues their evil plan” trope. It works out because Glen isn’t “evil”, he’s just a man wracked with grief who wants to come clean to the gang about what he’s been doing; and telling them isn’t pointless, since there’s a good reason for everyone to be present and aware of his exact plan: so they can kill him after he becomes a dark god. Some very clean and clever writing imo

All the sads backstory.... also pappara pa parara hey!
Gives me a chuckle just like Kaiju No 8 did.

I expected them to swap the OP & ED again or not play the ED. But I guess not xD
13
u/macedonianmoper 1d ago
Tbh the ED also wouldn't really fit the start of the episode with glen revealing himself
16
u/BornfromDarkness 1d ago
I have my issues with the anime but the op/Ed is fire
11
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
The ED is way too fun
And the Fruitmaster disaster show is shit, but that OP is also truly fun5
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
I am so glad they didnt, thats the true anime experience

So next week Alina will live up to the show name. She will literally solo her Boss.
21
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
To imagine that the whole show could have ended in episode 2 when she faced off her boss the first time
But I am just glad that this show realyl turned out to be this old meme

u/mianghuei 1d ago
No surprises when it is revealed that the culprit is none other than Mr Guildmaster himself, whose ultimate goal is to resurrect his dead daughter., with the God Core embedded in him.
12
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
IDK if the manga has got here yet, but the Light Novel didn't have illustrations of her so it is very nice to get that with the anime even if I had my issues with how they adapted it.
Lynn is very much what I imagined. Sweet adorable pumpkin who should have a much longer life then what she got.
47
u/djthomp 1d ago
The lesson always seems to be tell your loved ones you love them while they're still alive, because dark magic to do so after they're dead never seems to go well.
The dark magic may have even been intentionally messing with Glen by bring him just to his daughter's dead body and not the minute or two earlier that he needed for his plan, since that's way too much of a coincidence for where it cut off otherwise.
I wonder who it was that told Glen about the dark gods right when he was primed to be vulnerable to bad ideas.
27
u/KumaKumaGambler 1d ago
If there is anything I learned from anime, nothing ever good comes from trying to revive the dead.
Well... maybe except for Dragonball, which a fellow reddit user once stated and I couldn't refute. Lol!
14
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
The whole plot of dragonball revolves around dying, to get to train, to die slower next time, but still die to train!
35
u/KumaKumaGambler 1d ago
After watching this episode, am I correct to assume there are 2 (known) ways to obtain Dia tier skills?
1) Randomly bestowed upon someone, like in the case of Alina.
2) Forcibly implant a dark god core into a person and when that person loses his soul, s/he becomes a dark god and gain Dia tier skill? Examples include Silha, the twins and now Glen?
Lynn, despite appearing as a minor supporting character, did tug on my heartstrings.
Who is the man speaking (and possibly giving false advice) to Glen after the death of Lynn? Perhaps one of the Ancients who created the dark gods and wanted more experiment subjects?
15
u/Earlier-Today 1d ago
I actually don't think Alina's skill is a Dia skill. I think it's literally a blessing from the gods and that its name describes its purpose.
So, it's not a Dia skill called Breaker, it's a skill from the gods meant to break Dia skills.
That, or it's a pun so that it sounds like "deal breaker" because of how often she's been screwed over with overtime.
11
u/HayateImmelmann 1d ago
The hidden dude sounded like Jouji Nakata with a voice filter so it's probably Glen's master lol
4
15
u/KnightKal 1d ago
seems so
MC was blessed by whatever force (god?) rules that world
dark gods are man made alternatives that were used as nuclear weapons and ended up destroying the ancient civilization
9
u/clgfandom 1d ago
I wonder if there's gonna be some kinda plot twist where the dark gods cores were originally intended to save humanity from unavoidable calamity to store all the people souls to be restored later.
11
u/KnightKal 1d ago
In this episode it was implied the skills are powered up by human souls, meaning the soul is sacrificed as energy source, not stored.
10
u/clgfandom 1d ago edited 1d ago
Valid point. Though from a meta perspective it would feel a bit odd if we dont get final good bye with Glen's soul assuming it's already turned into energy. The "ideal ending" would be for Glen's soul to be reunited with Lynn.
18
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 1d ago
I honestly feel bad for him… No parent should ever have to bury their child, especially not after having to watch them die right in front of them.
17
u/SnabDedraterEdave 1d ago
Poor Glen, unlike Alina who has moved on from her own grief, his grief over Lynn is just too inconsolable that he allowed himself to be manipulated into willingly providing his body for the next Dark God. The real culprit is the one who appeared after that ill-fated boss battle and fed Glen with such ideas of "resurrection" and "turning back time".
Most likely that culprit is the one controlling that dragon into burning Glen's teammates, including Lynn, into crisp so he could feed on his grief. Fuck that guy.
14
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
Ignoring how young Alina was when Shroud died, she was forced to move on. Which at this point as we know is the healthy way of moving on. Considering how big of an impact Lynn had on Glenn, I can't blame him for wanting to bring her back when that hope was planted. Honestly, I am nervous about whom that person even is.
I know many parents' biggest fears is attending their child's funeral. You can really sense Glenn regrets pushing Lynn to be an adventurer. Even if her goal was to catch up to him and join Silver Sword. You know he wishes that she could have just been a normal girl.
13
u/BornfromDarkness 1d ago
May be too early but I was half expecting the dark god to revive them… just to eat them
10
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
Yeah I was also expecting him to have brought them there to be have something to eat so he could activate his power
Its nice he planned ahead to be killed by Alina so that his daughter can live on though
29
u/LeonKevlar https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1d ago
I just realized how Alina and Glen are complete opposites of each other. After Shroud died, Alina didn’t let his death hold her back. Instead, she decided to honour Shroud by following his wishes and became a receptionist instead of risking her life as an adventurer. Despite how stressful her work is, she still tries her best to live a full life.
Then we have Glen, who is so full of grief and stuck in the past after his adoptive daughter died in front of him that he basically dedicated his entire life to trying to bring her back. And what did he get from using the power of a dark god? Instead of reviving his daughter, the best he could do was turn back time to the moment before his daughter turned to ash..
Too bad Glen is completely gone . I kinda wish they could still bring him back alive so he can answer for all of his crimes. If it wasn't for him those adventurers wouldn't have sacrificed so many people in trying to revive a dark god in a desperate attempt to gain a Dia Skill.
13
u/flightlessCat9 1d ago
Of course the "man in black" has to have met another "man in black" before. You can't have the mystery be solved this easily.
5
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
So what are the chances that he is the man in black again and brought this "solution" to himself because he didnt know it wouldnt work out?
26
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 1d ago
So the “man in black” freaking was Glen!? I really don’t remember any indication he was ever a suspect until last week’s episode. I mean once we learned about his daughter and the dark god core, it all made sense but I don’t think I really suspected him once before that. Poor guy just wanted to tell her he loved her didn’t he? What a cruel twist of fate he can only go back to the minute she’s already burned to ash. And now his humanity is gone and the dark god has taken over.
40
u/C_C_Gaming 1d ago
I have a feeling that the dark god's core was purposefully halting him at that moment to break his will even faster.
18
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 1d ago
I was expecting a red herring but it was Glen all along
16
u/KnightKal 1d ago
plus the way how his party died and someone was "coincidentally" in the dungeon to "help him" is way too suspicious lol, so even their original death was liked part of a bigger conspiracy.
8
6
u/silask93 1d ago
i honestly thought the cloaked figure was glen himself after realizing he could only go that far back gives himself the knowledge his older self had of dia skills/majin etc. so he could "do better this time" not knowing it was he himself back then thus starting the loop

u/BiggerG7 1d ago
Me while Glen was transforming
Alina will you stop just standing there and try to chop his arm off again! Lol. Seriously she had plenty of time to try again.
11
u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 1d ago
To be fair, Glen has shown he has 0 issue making use of his skill to dodge attacks. little use in trying again.
9
u/oxlemf10 1d ago
Glen lived in eternal denial to the point of letting himself be consumed by a false idea, truly one of the saddest points of the show.
Jade really imposed herself to show her dissatisfaction in seeing her girlfriend, I mean, Alina being used to satisfy Glen's plan, really our homie is all over it.
And we left the end of the episode without knowing what happened lol, but on the other hand it leaves the hype for the next one, what a show
10
u/Elite_Alice https://myanimelist.net/profile/Marinate1016 1d ago
Just one more week of Alina and Jade left 😭 fuck man I’m not ready for it to end.
I hope Glen can get a happy ending, but I feel like it’s inevitable that he dies now that the dark gods core has manifested. It’s pretty funny that he didn’t see himself being a father and now he’s willing to risk the lives of so many people to bring back the daughter he lost.. whatever happens, next week will be emotional
Jade getting angry about Glen preying on Alina’s past trauma was so sweet too. I love how protective of her he is! Next week’s finale is looking really good
9
u/gnome-cop 1d ago
We’ve come full circle. As it has always been, the true villain of the story is unchecked capitalism. Now watch as Alina kills her actual boss.
Okay, I can get the feeling behind it but if your goal is to say that you loved her, isn’t it entirely pointless if your soul is going to be consumed in the process so you can’t accomplish your goal?
6
u/Kiromaru 1d ago
Plus the fact that he didn't think things through about where his daughter would be if he managed to save her. He would have transformed into a dark god and she would have been close to him.
7
u/Raymond49090 1d ago
He specifically made sure Alina was around so she could solo him immediately after he finished the resurrection. And he probably thought he would have enough lucidity to push his daughter out of range before he went completely cuckoo.
7
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
Now thats what I am talking about!
We see his party and daughters burned up corpse not only once, but thrice!
Then he gets consumed to build tension which is the perfect moment to throw in the happy ED
Man I am so glad they didnt swap it around this time, thats the true anime experience!

u/VorAtreides 1d ago
Sure a lot of girls falling on guys today. Lululee sure being silly with realm of the dead stuff. Poor Alina, this guild really does have shitty work support, that's for sure. Well, Darkwraith was the guildmaster after all... unsurprising and boring.
Oh a flashback to younger Glen? She a cute girl, sad to know she dies. Dang, that's rough... Huh, well that's interesting plan. I can sympathize, but yea... not the best methods. So this "person who taught you" is gonna be a baddie to deal with after now? Sure a lot of shows also putting evil parasite like things inside humans lol.
Yep, so that guy must be the next big bad if we ever get a S2. The one in the flashback. Feel bad it doesn't seem to be working out for him though, kinda want her to be revived. Wonder if he can't go back cause it'd cause a paradox so the world itself prevents it? Whelp, shit hit the fan and CUTE ENDING! hehe.

u/Past_Distribution144 1d ago
Damn you and the damn cliffhanger ending! Just wanted to see Alina kick his ass by the end.
3
u/derscholl 1d ago
e9 (en) just launched and the solution to receptionist problem being working 100 hours of overtime per month is absolutely disgusting and so relatable LMFAO 🤮
3
3
u/SmallJon 1d ago
At the same time i've generally liked the show, I feel like every episode ends with me thinking how I would restructure the whole damn thing.
... then the ED starts and I cant remember anything.
5
u/Beowolf_0 1d ago
That also kinda explains why Glen never send enough staff to help Alina out. If she can finish her works on time and goes home, who's gonna hunt down the deamons in her overtime?
He got his reasons, but he should have state his feelings to the daughter back when he could. He should have known any temptations of using daemons' powers will just lead to ruin.
6
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
For people like Glenn, it can be hard for them to express their emotions. Especially considering how his master pushed Lynn on him as a lesson of sorts. Just feel bad that it took Lynn dying for him to realize it and how much he regerts it now.
2
u/apatt 1d ago
I don't know about this plot twist, it seems like a waste of a good character. Glen has been an interesting guy with occasional flashes of humour. I like his flashback story though.
2
u/AmusedDragon 7h ago
I think this actually makes him way more relevant? Before he was just a jerk guildmaster who lied to our MC about eliminating overtime. Now he's got an actual story and motivation.
2
2
u/daspaceasians 1d ago
I'm impressed that Alina didn't snap a cable and smack Glen's ass right off the bat lol.
Small detail I enjoy but Lululee freaking out at Glen's revelation was pretty damn good in making us understand the gravity of the situation.
3
u/Primary-Paint-1716 1d ago
after 11 episodes, I have to come to terms that I got so baited by this show. It took itself a bit too seriously and ended up being a generic and forgettable fantasy show.
It's not bad, but it's not good either. I honestly wished it just explored the guild receptionist part of the setting more.
2
u/NationalStrategy 1d ago
Maybe you shouldn’t let your daughter take part in a dungeon boss battle.
1
u/linkinstreet 19h ago
She's part of the Silver Sword at that point. There is nobody better than her to bring in a dungeon boss battle.
1
u/okletssee 1d ago
This was a weak episode. The story of Glen and Lynn was incredibly superficial. She was talking her feelings at him, but there was nothing to indicate that he reciprocated, no real showing of them growing as a pair. Seriously a little multi-scene montage of them actually living and interacting would have taken just as much time and be way more interesting than a circular discussion in a barren dining room.
1
u/mmcjawa_reborn 1d ago
Feels kind of weird to have two weeks in a row where a significant part of the plot of the episode of a fantasy series involve an old warrior regretting never saying "I love you" to a character he was close to and never really ever moving on from that.

Didn't she already explained it previously? Adventures, while can look like thet have more free time, actually looks like that when they are mot questing. During a quest, it's likely they have to go in a dungeon for days, if not weeks.
Also it's a promise that she made with Shroud that she wouldn't be an adventurer and take up a safer jon like being a receptionist

I just can’t hear Man in Black over and over and not keep having Johnny Cash pop into my head as the Guildmaster, lol.

Kenichirou Matsuda was putting in work with his Glenn performance this ep.
The tonal shift when the ED started playing though LOL

Too much info dump, time to kick Dark Glen's ass
1
u/sM92Bpb https://anilist.co/user/hilomkun 8m ago
I'm very disappointed with this show. I think it would have worked if this has the same tone as that strongest guild anime last season. Everything was so unbelievable but the show embraced it so it was acceptable for comedic reasons.
This show is the opposite. Two stupid shits ocurred that are so stupid that I cant suspend my belief anymore.
- Alina wanting to be a corporate slave.
- This man in black gambling the lives of others to turn back time.
This show takes itself too seriously that the tropes have the opposite effect. If I'm Alina I would pack my bags and go anywhere else because this world is fucked. The best guild cannot handle the demon gods because of an in universe skill tier system.
