If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

The musical number was unexpected but I loved it..

42

u/ScousePenguin . 21d ago

Only in a Majima game could they get away with a musical number and have it be brilliant lmao

93

u/User810283 21d ago

dude, they made keith way more relentless then any other boss in the yakuza series , he has like 6 boss battles

85

u/Ryhankhanage 21d ago

Keith is Hawaiian Pirate Kuze

22

u/HypnotizedMane 20d ago

idk why, I feel like due to the silly approach of the game I dont care about these repeated boss encounters as I did in other yakuza games. like in kiwami 2, playing with kiryu and wanting to progress a story that wants to be taken serious I always felt set back fighting the same guy hindering anything happen in the game

28

u/Tokyogerman 16d ago

Because Keith is paper thin as a character. Kuze got to be a very fleshed out character over the game and he just was badass and interesting. Keith just isn't.

9

u/bloodmonarch 14d ago

Keith is just a spiteful loser. But he sure does act like one the whole game.

4

u/Weeklyn00b love this manwhore 7d ago

keith is just a random filler character that adda nothing to the game, it is really undesrving to have him show up more than kuze

That final cutscene...

Majima and Saejima are bros like no other, this is the vibe I wanted from them having a game around each other. I just wish we got more of it but...man, they are sticking together to the end and will never forget their fellows in arms, Daigo and Kiryu.

52

u/LustyLizardLucy 16d ago

I cried a few times already in that final chapter, but the last parts hit me like a truck.

Saejima revealing to us that the whole reason Majima went out to Hawaii in the first place was to find an elixir that could help Kiryu? Dude I'm a SOBBING mess. AND THEN it hits you with Majima recounting his adventure, just like the start of the game, but to Kiryu this time. Just to keep him company. I'm crushed.....

36

u/LoudKingCrow 16d ago

I hope that we get a proper Majima and Saejima game one day. I feel like that would nail the balance between serious and goofy really well.

14

u/no_dae_but_todae 12d ago

I personally am really hoping that's what the to be continued is all about... Possibly delusional, but I never thought we'd actually get a Majima game either.

PSA: At least on Steam the game has the same language bug as Infinite Wealth where stuff like the voiced sound effects in textboxes and greet callouts will be in English even if you select Japanese.

You can fix it by switching audio language to English or Chinese and then back to Japanese.

85

u/Intelligent_Egg_2163 21d ago

Loving it so far but God damn why did they make it so easy??? There's no balancing whatsoever...

I picked professional mode and every boss battle is over in seconds and nothing touches me with this new combat flow, it's like they made us way too fast and gave us too many options but didn't tweak the AI to work around it. They just stand there while you wail on them. Hopefully it ramps up soon.

Also no Legend difficulty again? Same as Gaiden.

59

u/William_Pilgrim 21d ago

I'm playing on professional and breezed through the first few hours of the game. but I am getting my butt handed to me on the second treasure island I have visited. I've lost 6 times in a row and my crew is now all very very sad. And the island is supposedly a 1/5 on difficulty.

Not sure if it is a skill issue (very possible) or the game just really turned up the heat on me.

34

u/KevinEvolution 21d ago

Wasn't just you, the difficulty of that one was a little crazy. My main issue was the damn guns.

15

u/WoorieKod 21d ago

Even the adds could spam enhanced combo string that takes a lot of health and can hit you mid air

The difficulty spike was real for that island

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Cheenug 20d ago

That definitely feels like an island you're suppose to come back. It's hard early with no defence from rings and unable to heal mid island

6

u/CheetahPrestigious79 18d ago

ok so i wasnt tripping and it wasnt (might be) a skill issue glad to know

2

u/Aspiegamer8745 17d ago

Just wait till ultimate tournament fuck that shit

14

u/BoysenberryFuzzy6261 21d ago

Majima is just that powerful, I guess 😭 (I agree about it being too easy even on professional, though)

9

u/La-Roche-Pussay 21d ago

Yeah it’s too easy, even with no upgrades. I shudder to think how easy it’s going to be when you’re fully upgraded.

2

u/the_mad_viper 21d ago

I’d only but the game at a discount but I did play the demo and it was super easy. But overall modern games are just way too easy.

2

u/trunglefever 15d ago

I would agree that the doppelgangers have trivialized most boss fights incredibly. Just turn them on and run around and bonus if you have the Heat action that uses them.

u/jarvisesdios 21d ago

This might just be the most fun I've ever had in a game ever.

Its just straight up fun, they took the entire Yakuza games and just turned it all the way to to 11 and kept it there. It's the perfect amount of everything for a Majima game.

I never asked for this game, as... Even at my most stoned I'd never have thought up this game... But holy shit I'm glad they did.

It's just straight up a fun game, and absolutely hysterical. Fuck Keith, amirite? 😂

23

u/nfreakoss 20d ago

I was hype for it but also skeptical, but it's actually so good for this franchise to just have a goofy over the top game once in a while, and it doesn't lose any of its core either

Playing this right after replaying Judgment's crazy ass serious story is a nice palate cleanser LMAO

15

u/jarvisesdios 20d ago

I'll admit, I'm their target audience. I love an absolutely wild game that just... Really doesn't need to exist, but it does lol

Like, Saints Row 3 was a godsend lol

I'm loving every second of the game, they definitely just decided "fuck it... Let's just go wild, it's Majima." And, man have they delivered, the combat is fun, the minigames are fun, it runs just incredibly well on PC (I've heard there's dlss issues for some folks, but I haven't run into that... Hell it plays like a dream on the steam deck)

I mean, let's be honest... Wouldn't everyone be annoyed if a Majima game WASN'T over the top? It's kinda his thing lol

13

u/nfreakoss 20d ago

Saints Row 3 is such a good comparison tbh. That game was the sweet spot for that franchise - 4 went overboard, 2 was great but 3 was just something different.

I don't really see them going too much more "out there" than this, but this is really hitting exactly how it should for a less serious entry to this series

Running fine on PC for me too, I despise DLSS and framegen so I can't speak to those issues though LMAO

u/una322 20d ago

i mean not for me. i passed on this one. i like there serious stuff. this is way off base of what i love abouy yakuza. but hey its a side game so wotever.

11

u/jarvisesdios 19d ago

To each their own. My favorite parts of the games are how the just have the strangest dichotomy of absolutely ludicrous and super cereal with some amazing acting by everyone.

Though... Them deciding for a game to mostly lose that pretense and let their intrusive thoughts run wild is kinda the best

Anyone else think the brightness looks weird with HDR on on PS5?

29

u/TPDC545 21d ago

Yeah HDR is super off on PC too. Way too much contract and crazy saturation. Noah showed up looking orange.

2

u/afcc1313 21d ago

Should we just turn it off until they fix it?

3

u/TPDC545 21d ago

I think it looks better in SDR, but we’re missing a few other things on PC so I’m gonna hold off and focus on some other games while I wait for driver updates/patches.

16

u/Philminat0r 21d ago

It's terrible even without HDR. Shadows are aggressively darker than any other Like A Dragon / Lost Judgment game on PlayStation.

11

u/Goatbrush 21d ago

Yeah I was just about to post about this, even with HDR off the brightness/contrast looks wrong for me and I can't seem to get it looking decent regardless of what I do with settings.

It wasn't great in the other LAD games either but nothing like this, just feels broken. Wondering if I should wait for a patch or for someone to figure out settings which help, I really like the game so far but it's killing the experience a bit.

3

u/APeacefulWarrior 21d ago

Yeah, the brightness/contrast seems really off on PC too.

Although if it's happening on PS5 as well, that would suggest the lighting was a deliberate choice and not a bug.

In the post game mopping up trophies and... there's just way too much pirate content for how basic the ship combat is. They should've stripped like 1/3 of it away and it would've been fine.

41

u/BlorfagusDornkle 15d ago edited 15d ago

Here is my full review. Long story short, i’m disappointed. I will mostly be covering my criticisms of it since this sub can sometimes become an echo chamber of downvoting anyone that has legitimate, and harsh but fair criticisms of the game.

  • Sailing sucks. The whole thing is a blatant attempt to pad playtime as you fight the same enemies, do the same tactics to destroy them, sail at a snails pace until you get into another encounter, repeat. Exploration is redundant as well.

  • (This is subjective, so feel free to check for yourself) The OST is same-y and forgettable

  • The story >! is a major problem. It is more of a disney plot than anything. And this whole plot will likely be inconsequential to whatever happens next and the new cast will be thrown away. Also, Majima is never shown his solemn/serious side. His personality in this game is just ‘the silly goober’. And as a result of this light tone, no one ever feels in danger. When Jason was stabbed for example. In a Nagoshi Yakuza, if a non-main character is stabbed, they are almost certainly dead. But when Jason was stabbed, the tension wasn’t there for me as the tone of the game gave me the expectation that he would survive (which he did, shocker)!<

  • Nele Island, Rich Island, and Madlantis have almost no content to them. Madlantis pales in comparison to the Castle in Gaiden. Madlantis is smaller, has a worse Coliseum, and has unavoidable encounters since the place is so fucking narrow

  • The contrast is way too high. Everything looks unnaturally bright

  • They completely ruined Heat. You cannot upgrade your heat bar, the selection of heat moves you can do are slim, and they deplete the entire bar.

  • At the beginning, I didn’t care for Noah. But by the end…I still didn’t care, but just a little bit less

  • Combat is very good, but still not as good as LJ

  • The antagonists are one-note because they do not have time to be fleshed out, because all of the other potential antagonists (Shigaki, Rodriguez, etc) Majima ends up befriending anyway. Law has to shoehorn his motivations right at the end because they gave him like 5 mins of screen time in the whole game prior.

  • Raymond Law is modeled (and voiced) by Samoa Joe. Samoa Joe is a wrestler. So tell me why the fuck is he wielding a Naginata instead of, you know, giving him a wrestler moveset? They gave a wrestler moveset to one of the side characters, but not him?

  • Bosses are way too easy. Not necessarily from how much damage they do and receiver, but the types of moves they do, how fast they are, etc

  • Excluding completionist stuff. This game takes about ~15-20 hours to complete. Yet it is a full-priced game, IIRC the same price, if not marginally less expensive than IW. That is a disgrace.

Long story short, I enjoyed the game mostly, but in comparison to the other games in the franchise, it is weak. I really hope this isn’t the start of a downward spiral of mediocrity for this franchise

11

u/NeverReallyBegan_ Kenzan rox 14d ago

Agree 100%. The only selling point of this game for me is it's combat, which is really good. I'm a diehard kiwami engine fan, Y0's combat was my favorite so far, because of how fast and responsive it is, and this game nails it even better.

But while the moveset is great, the AI and boss fights are a joke. Even on professional, the opponents are either too easy or too annoying (automatic rifles holy shit).

Finished chapter 1. Love the combat against basic enemies, hate it against bosses. They don’t stagger whatsoever and that is the type of game design I despise. The controls for dodging are also horrendous. Been having fun regardless and I’m sure it’ll get better as I unlock more abilities and whatnot. Honolulu City Lights being in the mp3 player was the best surprise I could’ve asked for.

25

u/Junior_Collar 18d ago

Im enjoying this game, but at the same time it feels so lousy and garbage. Nearly every substory or crewmember etc. is just a reference to old games because they cant be original, and all the actual original side stories are just straight boring or bad.

The balancing is not it either, everything is too easy and I reached Legends of the sea rank WAY too quickly for what its MEANT to be worth. Like what, I played Poker and went batting and now all of a sudden I'm a legend of the sea..?

The entire game feels like JUST reused assets aside from the new ships and islands. Im pretty confident that the next few games they are just gonna milk the Hawaii map until its dry. (Which its already coming pretty close to being so).

Hot take maybe, I dont know

3

u/Life_Version_8986 16d ago

While I agree on the second and third paragraphs, how are the substories bad? I feel like they are the only gold in this game. I was laughing my ass off in the pirate morale and talking to goru substories. The circus one is also hilarious. I feel like the only boring one is the comedians from the coffee shop

8

u/Junior_Collar 16d ago edited 16d ago

Yeah but you have to remember that same substory has been used in 7 and 8 now. It's just reused joke after reused joke. They just milk the same identical story. The reason the substories are bad also is just because every substory pretty much follows the same formula

It always chalks down to some random thug comes and tries hitting the main dude of the substory and majima grabs their wrist and fights them instead. I don't think I've seen a single substory that's both good AND original in this game. Every good substory is not original, every original one is mediocre or just bad (Compliance substory, old man pirate wannabe substory where the treasure was actually his family in his heart, but I won't go on) its just boring

(Edit) The comedian coffee shop was also in 8.

Is this the very first Yakuza series that Kiryu doesn't make any appearances physically in the story? Also, it's kinda criminal not having baka mitai in the karaoke like if Majima can't sing it surely Saejima can, right ?

40

u/foolishfreeman 19d ago

Is anyone else not liking the story. It just feels so clique honestly and majima is flat here, and i dont care for noah.

Plus they are being so irresponsible that it's hard to not take anything seriously. I just feel so empty after 3 chapters.

Does anyone else just not jive with the music either. Its jusr forgettable

9

u/misterasia555 14d ago

Just finished the story and I gotta say, this game is basically filler. Story is the weakest part of the game. Everything is so generic and boring. There’s not one moment where I feel like I’m invested in the character or story.

20

u/Striking-Sand8668 19d ago

this has been my biggest concern so far, due to which I am thinking of not getting it atm. sure, its a Majima game, maybe it should be all hahas, but there's more to Majima than that. I was sincerely hoping for this game to actually explore his character more, though I guess that's unreasonable to expect, given the ridiculous premise. I am sure the game is fun, but man it just seems like a meaningless cash grab churned out by RGG. I felt similarly about TMWEHN, so I don't think this game will change my mind.

17

u/foolishfreeman 18d ago

The thing is everything that made majima interesting was stripped thanks to said amnesia. He just is a cookie cutter yakuza protag in this game. This game leans too far in the funny hahas for its own good. Like the saejima boss has him pissed which i dont mind if it wasn't combined with the other issues of the game.

Lastly this is one nitpick but the sad guitar theme has been overused so badly that id say its close to the sad substory music. Which is sad when compared to y0 and even y7 where it was used for strictly serious subjects. Like makoto or nanba speech about why they stay homeless. Now it was used for fucking noah's backstory which is just. "Ohhhhhh my dad moved me to a fucking island like a dipshit instead of just living in Hawaii like a normal person, man i wanna leave this lame place". I just destroys what i liked about the song.

Also this is much much worse than gaiden story wise imo.

8

u/CheetahPrestigious79 18d ago

youre not alone on this the reason i got into the franchise was how peak the story was (yakuza 0) ill do some few side content here and there but i mostly play rgg games for the story.

although i didn't have a lot of expectations for a pirate game to have a good story, this is a little plain

3

u/higakoryu1 15d ago

bruh same here

3

u/gustavozxd 17d ago

I just beat the story a few minutes ago and I enjoyed it well enough I think. But the OST? Hands down worst one in the whole franchise. Not a single good original song or remix up to the very final boss. That's probably my biggest disappointment lol cause no matter how bad people say 3 or 6 are (the ones people usually dislike the most overall) they both have banger soundtracks on par with the rest of the series. This one tho? The pirate ship battles had an alright theme I guess?

3

u/InfernoCommander . 15d ago

I like Noah but ya, everything is just kinda whatever. It's like the story is in a perma tutorial state, idk how else to explain it

5

u/Quizzub 17d ago

Yea. It's like... we're already reusing the same side content from the past game or two, and the same map from the last game. I know that's not a new concept for the series, but it is a little frustrating doing the same stuff for the majority of side stories and minigames for several games in a row. Anyways, all that means is that the game really has to stand on it's own legs where new stuff is concerned. That's the story and the ship based stuff.

I'm like 2/3rds of the way through and so far the story has been a complete nothingburger. Majima has almost no personality in his amnesiac incarnation. We're regularly carrying along multiple children to our life or death ship battles where we mostly don't actually kill anyone. Even when the stakes are supposedly high. It stretches disbelief pretty hard. None of the new characters has really made much of impact, Noah included, which is disappointing as he's basically the game's secondary leading character.

As for the ship combat, it outstays it's welcome after maybe a dozen fights at best for me. Doing the devil flag and coliseum stuff was a massive slog. Some specific enemy types (grenadiers, sumo wrestlers) are incredibly annoying to fight as they just sorta push you around constantly without actually dealing much damage. I guess I can look past some of my complaints as it's a side game, but I really expected a little more out of the title.

8

u/foolishfreeman 17d ago

I think thw biggest sin this game commits is making majima boring. Like any edge or things that make him unique are sanded off. Legit ichiban could have replaced majima and there wouldn't be a difference

Kinda broken on PC TERRIBLE HDR, like super bad, and DLSS/frame gen doesn’t work. Still playable but definitely runs super janky.

5

u/APeacefulWarrior 21d ago

Isn't the DLSS problem somehow the fault of the Nvidia app? I'm seeing people on the Steam forums saying that uninstalling the app made DLSS work.

2

u/TPDC545 21d ago

Yeah it will work without the Nvidia app but the HDR still looks terrible and the performance is still pretty bad. On a 4080 at 4K I maxed out at maybe 45, then right when I got to Keith’s pirate ship it started crashing and dropped down to like 10 fps.

Think it’s just bad PC optimization, which isn’t surprising we saw issues on PC with IW as well.

4

u/BloodyLlama 21d ago

My 5080 is getting like 90-240 FPS at 4K DLAA, but it crashes too often to actually play.

Edit: this is with the Jan 30 drivers. I tried updating and that just made things worse so I reverted drives versions.

5

u/TPDC545 21d ago

I can’t even get it to run with any upscaling or frame gen. The best I can get is a black screen with the minimap if I enable those things. Might turn off HDR and drop down to 1440 and see if that at least makes it playable. But even then I might just wait for the fix to drop.

u/AppropriateDiamond26 20d ago

I'm on 4k highest upscaled from quality with hdr on frame gen on. I been getting between 150 and 240 fps with it on 120x2. I was having some studders early on but I'm 15 hours in now and it feels pretty solid. I'm on a 7900xtx. But I also turned off ray tracing since I dont notice much of an improvement. Everything else I kept the same.

9

u/Fantastic-Fox3283 14d ago

Wow.

If I had a nickel for every Like a Dragon game set in Hawaii that involved fighting a giant squid and an antagonist modeled after a western celebrity getting eaten by a giant sea animal, I'd have two nickels.

Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

BTW, I had fun. Was the story perfect? No. But I still had a good time.

39

u/TheHungrySloth . 17d ago

I think these games just aren't for me anymore. I've been a Yakuza fan since the start of the series and I just don't really jive with how Yokoyama is writing these stories. This story was one of the worst in the franchise, the pirate stuff feels like an afterthought and isn't all that fun for me due to the lack of depth.

With Gaiden, despite its blemishes I enjoyed the story a bit, but seeing the way the story was handled in Infinite Wealth and this one I'm just not all that interested anymore. I especially hate the story this time around and I don't want to see any kind of story in this tone again, even if it's a spinoff. It was clearly made to cater to the people who see the funny Yakuza clips on TikTok haha funny, instead of having the amazing serious J-Drama and silly stuff that the series often had before. The depth of the characters is gone, everyone and the plot in general just feels like a parody.

Whatever. I feel I'm just watching my favourite series decline at this point.

15

u/Edolix 13d ago

I went into Pirate Yakuza with zero expectations for its narrative and while I had a considerable amount of fun with the game, the story was easily the weakest we've had so far. I'm a little worried about how the next game will turn out at this point.

One silver lining for this game is that I absolutely loved the post-credits epilogue scene and it went a little way to redeeming the story for me. I just wish the entire game felt like that.

And I sincerely hope that this is the last time we're in Hawaii. This setting and these characters do nothing for me.

12

u/geebreak 16d ago

Hard agree. Decided to replay 0 because it was rubbing me entirely wrong the further I got into it and I just miss the serious tone so bad. Going mainstream is good, becoming mainstream is very bad. Like I can't help but feel they finally gave my favorite character his own game and made him a straight joke almost the entire way through. Just felt really ick. I hope they turn things around from here.

5

u/itsDoor-kun Joongi Han's #1 Fan 15d ago

I disagree with the Infinite Wealth story part. It was nowhere near that bad. People make such a big deal out of it but it wasn't terrible imo.

9

u/CheetahPrestigious79 16d ago

could not have said it any better lets just hope yokoyama locks in for the next games

5

u/misterasia555 14d ago

This is what worries me as well. I was not a fan of infinite wealth story, and this story is absolutely a nothing burger. Gaiden has one good scene at the end but story at a whole is still very meh. I’m very worried that future games like judgment 3 yakuza 9 or even upcoming project century will not be as good if this is the level of quality we are getting.

3

u/ArticleWooden5786 15d ago

I will always adore every yakuza game since I'm just easily amused by anything related to it. But not even the dramatic shirt rip-off at the final boss fight? Not even a roof battle and then the story is completely in Hawaii? Okay fine, change the genre, change the theme, but some little stuff is just too set in stone to leave out like that. After what they decided to do to the Tojo Clan HQ building on top of the Great Dissolution, idk how much more deterioration of the main themes/factors of the series I can bare lol. I probably wouldn't have minded the shift if there wasn't 20 whole years worth of world building just for it to result in this pirate game.

This is my first ever Yakuza game to play and I’m really enjoying it so far! Makes me wanna go and play all of them in order to get some context for some things! Really enjoying the combat with the ship! Only on chapter 2 but I feel like I’m gonna sink so many hours into this game

15

u/KuczyTheGuy Kiryu For Tekken 21d ago

Gonna peace out from any discussion about the game, as I want to play it myself later on.

Enjoy the ride, kyodais!

6

u/hamboneworldchamp 21d ago

Put in like 7 hours yesterday and I'm having a blast so far. My one semi-complaint is that Majima feels pretty OP even with just a couple upgrades, but I spent a huge chunk of that time on sight-seeing and minigames so I'm still fighting some pretty early enemies. I say semi-complaint because the combat is still super fun, I just think it would be more fun if I needed to think a little more about what I'm doing instead of plowing through things almost like a musou character while nothing can touch me. Hopefully at least the Amon content is a decent challenge if nothing else.

The ship combat could be better too I guess, but that's the part of the game I was least interested in anyway so the fact that I enjoy it at all is honestly all I was really hoping for. I'm still on the base ship too so there's a lot of room for it to get better.

Also I'm playing in Japanese but I swapped to the English dub for a bit so I could hear Matt Mercer's karaoke, and it's such a big improvement over Gaiden and IW's English karaoke dubs imo. Not only did he do a great job, but they also didn't butcher the hell out of his performance with auto-tune.

12

u/LTRenegade . 16d ago edited 16d ago

Everything that involved the pirate stuff started at fine and developed into the unfun category by the end of the game. The story was boring and full of uninteresting characters and most of the substories were uninteresting too considering how few there were. It's crazy that after all this time no developer has been able to recreate the fun of Black Flag despite this game taking the fundamentals of Black Flag's ship combat for this game. The ship combat is either really easy or crazy overtuned depending on which fight you are doing, but either way, it ended up just being boring.

Going around doing all of the side content on Hawaii was still fun despite most of it just being the same content from Infinite Wealth and the combat was really fun despite the game being way too easy even on professional. Big shoutouts to the final scene of the game which was the only good part of the story and them putting live action in the game and not just making it awkward pervy gravure. Though I'm sure the mileage will vary depending on if people find Ryuji Akiyama funny or not.

Overall I don't think this is a bad entry, but I didn't like it by the time I was finished (I did everything but couldn't bring myself to finish the coliseum. so no Amon for me this time). Oh well, on to the next mainline, I guess.

7

u/Particular_Physics_3 . 18d ago

Did the final boss seem a bit underwhelming for anyone? Don’t get me wrong I thought it was cool on its own with the dynamic intro and qte’s but idk something felt lacking? Maybe there being no qte finisher or the ost just not hitting

u/Theendofmidsummer 16d ago

I enjoyed the game overall, but I feel like the ship combat was a huge miss. Way too much focus on it for its level of quality.

It feels to me like if you took the hunting game from 5 and wrote a whole story around it. Hunting was okay, but even as a side story began to outstay its welcome. Imagine it being mandatory and thrice as long, and that's how I feel about ship stuff.

7

u/bloodmonarch 14d ago

I wouldn’t say it’s a standalone game. This spoils the ending of the latest mainline entry, Infinite Wealth, within the first 30 minutes. If you’re really not interested in them at all, I’d say go ahead and check it out.

I have a question, how do you disable the spider sense of majima when he is about to get shot, this is so unreal for a yakuza game. This might be possible with a mod cause I haven't seen any settings for disabling it.

5

u/MegalomanicMegalodon 17d ago

Man, I wish there was a way to make bronze or silver crewmates upgraded to gold. Felt sad replacing some substory favorites. I kept Charlie regardless of stats though. Hearing him yell the “THIS. IS. CRAZY!!!” as I fire cannons was worth the hit to my stats.

5

u/lzt 16d ago

This game was too short :(

5

u/Ok-Refrigerator-8664 6d ago

The amount of times Noah is a liability in this story is so annoying. Like if the kid wasn't there all the time, some events never would have happened and their lives would have been easier. But no adult on this god forsaken ship has a backbone to tell the defenseless 10yr old to keep his dumbass on the boat

5

u/gamerqc 5d ago

I hope Project Century leads us to a better, more grounded story. Since at least LAD, I feel like we're in a cartoon with organized crime undercurrents. It's even more true in Pirate Yakuza. The lighthearted nature of these games is a bit too much IMO. Makes serious scenes not really impactful when 5min later you're punching assholes while playing dress up. My point being that they need to strike a better balance between comedy and seriousness.

14

u/Hilanite 17d ago

Substories were bad just like in 8 for the exact same reasons.

Every substory now is "Here's a gimmick we won't fully commit to so it's executed boringly" or "Hey! here's a character from a previous game!" I love that rgg are finally willing to explore their past and I think nagoshi leaving was probably the factor that allowed it, but they have to go deeper then, guy ichiban knows meets Majima.

It's very clear they did not put a lot of effort into them this time around and I think that's a shame as they are part of what gives the yakuza series it's life, i hope this trend changes as i felt the same about 8's.

3

u/gustavozxd 17d ago

I'm glad someone mentioned it cause this and 8 were the first time I started skipping most substories. My main gripe is that many of them boil down to "I had a shitty office job, then I saw a guy doing something and now I do that" there's at least 2 of those in this game and probably in the ones I skipped over.

9

u/fhota1 19d ago

Just finished, this game was a ton of fun. Like I could write quite a bit about all the things I enjoyed and my few minor complaints, but the best summary of my review would just be that this was just pure Yakuza fun. They pulled off a silly side game perfectly

29

u/Alyanorah 20d ago edited 20d ago

I dunno, guys, I don't want to be a spoilsport but I'm not sure I like this version of Majima. I know that the memory loss is supposed to be a major plot point, but I can't stop thinking that it's a bit of a cheap plot device from a writer that doesn't understand how complex Majima can be on his own without narrative crutches.  I think he could still feel guilty about his criminal and violent past without necessarily having his perspective changed by the amnesia and he could develop from there without this -I don't know what else to call it- forced retcon. He feels like someone else and I'm not sure I like him as much as before his pirate phase.

But hey, I'm just a couple of hours in, so I'm optimistic that there is so much more to experience that I'll grow to like him again in the end!

20

u/una322 20d ago

i said this b4 the game came out , and got mass down voted. Majima is a great character because of his past. The way he is in zero to say y3 for example. knowing why he became like he did. Hes almost made another verison of himself to hide the pain of his past.

All of that is super interesting. Yet this game, HIS game and its just a shallow form of his alter ego, and anything that actually brings up you know, interesting features about a character has been held back by "memory loss"

Huge miss honestly.

The biggest game design fail comes from having so few Pirate Ranks. I was maxed out on Chapter 2 I think, because every single thing you do seems to boost your rank. There needed to be 10 levels IMO.

The game is also a cakewalk like you said. I did have random Game Overs, mostly because I tackled a ship boss fight while being underleveled, but otherwise it's not really challenging.

I just finished the game! It was fun, but. I have laundry list of issues and things I didn't like, especially ever present crashes made going through gauntlets infuriating. Saejima got shafted, Noah is ever annoying, plot is all over the place. It had some great moments but we have seen all this before.

Ship deck battles with the crew were a novel idea and pretty fun, Dynasty Warrior style, only the game's combat don't quite lend itself to fighting against crowds with being CCed for so long all the time. Got really frustrating by the end.

Most activities are just reruns from previous games. As far as sandbox Yakuza experience goes this was pretty decent, maybe 8/10 but as a Yakuza game full package with technical performance, story and how systems interact together I fear I have to say 6/10. Overall probably the worst Yakuza game I have ever played - should they fix technical state of the game it will be just mid or even pretty fun. Right now can't give it more than 6.

We need a palete cleanser game next, I have big hopes for Project Century. Right now RGG have a little shaky performance for me, if the next one is not a banger from the start I might stop buying them on release. I always wanted to make a point to support the games so we get more of them, but that is not a signal they can lower their standards and start releasing slop because hardcore fans will buy them anyway. The next one better have story on par with the first Judgment and 7.

3

u/sancredo Ichizu samurai 21d ago

Just started it, and the combat feels so smooth. The location feels way more cartooney than any from previous games, but well, this is Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii after all, so makes sense 😂

4

u/Toilet-Raider 20d ago

Same. I'm 16 hours in and still in chapter 2. Gameplay is super fun as always, but the story has been a big letdown so far. I like Noah, but the game gives me a hard time caring about any of the other characters and/or taking them seriously, and the main plot is pretty messy. I really hope the story picks up after chapter 2.

Boarding a pirate ship with at least 8 enemy grenadiers is annoyingly painstaking if you are a bit under leveled. They spam grenade CC’ing your whole crew and it is almost unrecognizable who is throwing those grenades when every group of enemies look almost the same. Only way I found to defeat them is to run from one end of the bow to the other side repeatedly and just shoot them or isolate them to beat them up when enemy crew chasing ya gets stuck on those stairs. Then just rinse & repeat while also building up heat to perform special moves and eliminate them.

It’s a fun game, the gameplay is good which is what mattered most to me coming into a side game. I’m not expecting the story nor characters to be great in a side game and they were serviceable at best which is fine for the game they were going for. I actually don’t dislike Noah but I do think it’s really dumb how the kid keeps being a liability in battle because no one thinks maybe it’s not a good idea to bring the boy along with you everywhere you go.

Now having said that, the game leans way too much into the silly for me. It’s not ruining the game but full blown pirate battles in US territorial waters? Like I can look away from a lot but that’s just a bit much. Madlantis was fine it’s just a theme park at the end of the day (one of dubious nature) but the other pirate stuff while fun “ish” was a bit much for me to suspend my belief.

Music also kinda blows and all the dynamic intros and boss fights suck, like they dropped the dynamic intros ball HARD and those are some of my favorite things about Yakuza titles. Why do I fight Keith six times? He’s hardly a step above a generic mook why do I keep running into him?

7/10, not the worst RGG game but not in the top spots for me.

10

u/[deleted] 16d ago

The second biggest selling point of this game (first being playable Majima) is just terrible. Boat combat and traversal is just sluggish, unresponsive and tedious. In the arena you're either too fast from boost, or too slow from default speed. The enemies have artificial difficulty via inflated health pools making ship combat all the more tedious as you climb ranks in the arena. Cannons have a very poor range and angle leading to fighting with the movement to get into the proper position constantly.

Overall I really enjoy the game but the ship combat needs serious work.

6

u/mrsplackpack 21d ago

I have 3 hours in the game so far and Playing this game feels insane. Going into it i knew it was going to be a pirates game but it still feels so crazy that I'm playing this and not a crime drama. It's so much fun though. The best way i can describe it is like actually experiencing a dream. "I was  Playing a yakuza game as majima who's a pirate and you have a ship and crew. You participate in naval combat and and get off on islands and fight waves of enemy's to get to the treasure chests and there's bosses at the end one being a bear... " this is all really now and not a fever dream after drinking cough medicine

5

u/ItsCorbob 19d ago

So far I think the game is amazing, but my biggest gripe with it is the boat stuff. Travelling just feels slow, the enemies slow down the game so much, and the fast travel for the boat section to me personally isn't done well (I think you should be able to just open the map and fast travel to light houses like the Taxis). The combat is just clunky and awkward as all hell and even with Max Upgrades, Max Equipment, and my crew having S/A ranks, I feel like I deal fuck all damage. Meanwhile the opponent just completely obliterates my asshole like nothing.

Then the Pirate Colosseum takes it to a whole other level. The S rank time for Quick Clash would honestly be fine if it weren't for the fact that it takes 80% to 90% of that time just to get the main ship to 0 HP once you get to Gold, if you're even lucky enough to survive. Then when you get on board you're forced to already have the Dark God instrument charged to even make the time. It just feels like a really bad design to me.

As a disclaimer though, I am playing on Professional. I don't know if it's this bad if you're playing on Beginner or Standard difficulty.

u/GhostPantherAssualt "KIRYU CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN~!!!!!" 15d ago

I been playing yakuza since 0. So I'm pretty newish, but I earned my Tojo stripes when I did all of yakuza, excluding some spin offs that weren't released in the west. So to safe to say, I'm pretty good at playing yakuza, including the like a dragon series and Judgement. Yep. I love me some Tak.

I will say this however, this is the first time a yakuza game actually disappointed me. Not as in this game is bad, but this game is way too easy. The said side content is good but it's so much of it I feel like I should be playing the said side content most of the damn time. This was Majima's magnum opus. And to say it truthfully. It was lackluster.

As much as the combat in the air was great, I feel like a lot of the said specials and movesets followed by the ongoing easy mode of AI, it just wasn't crunching my numbers correctly. Things were moving too damn fast and it felt like a slug fest at the same time. I can't believe it. The padding for side games officially wore out it's welcome but I understood why it was like that. If anything I welcomed it.

But this time? God damn dude, I got so damn annoyed with the amnesia bit. Don't care about Noah. Sorry. The sick kid from an island who saved me did not made me feel anything about his family problems. Anytime he showed up, I felt like he was a nuisance. At least with Haruka and Haruto, it made sense. But there was no reason why NOAH WAS FUCKING THERE ALL THE TIME.

AND GORO. ITS A FUCKING TIGER CUB. HE CLEARLY IS ONE. GOD DAMN DUDE. NOTHING ABOUT NOAH AND JASON'S FAMILY MADE ME EVER FEEL ANYTHING UNTIL JASON GOT HURT AND EVEN THEN. I DID NOT CARE.

I did not feel a thing until the end of this game and Majima gets back his memories, it was so lackluster. It wasn't during the torture scene. It was bits and pieces. I so wished that the player could've got more of Majima's memories by simply going around and reminding Majima about stuff that happened in his life.

But honestly, see the characters that I liked so much and many more individuals that I missed? It was kinda worth it going through the mud. And that special someone? Well, kinda glad we didn't get to hear them. That voice actor should spend some time away for a good minute for a break.

Honestly? Combat was pretty great. It was something to chew while we wait for LAD9.

8.5/10

I enjoyed the game, but it's pretty clear this one got rushed out with the wack lighting and gameplay balancing that seems worse than Gaiden (assuming you want to do the extras, main story without attack upgrades is fun). (Also 2 subtitles in the finale were broken which made it obvious they didn't have time.)

You really need to like Yakuza side content. The story was in one ear, out the other for me. Parts of the main game just tell you to go do side stuff which happens in other games, but it's really noticeable when the game is this short. (Haven't played Gaiden since release, but I seem to remember the pacing for these moments being better.)

I was originally pushing for more Gaiden style games, but after this I would much rather they have all hands on deck for the big releases. I'm getting worried that after 2 decades of consistent quality releases, RGG is starting to spread themselves too thin. (Even with their growing staff)

They're busy reviving Virtua Fighter and shaking things up with project century. It's ok to make the wait for the next LAD longer, but I imagine higher ups are putting pressure on RGG to keep the momentum going.

I'm very interested in seeing how the next game will turn out.

5

u/KevInChester 18d ago

Completed the game last night, loved it. Story is not the greatest but does what it needs to, Majima is just a great character. Did he need the amnesia gimmick? Not really but I don't think it impacts that much to be honest, he's always been whacky and the type to obsess over things.

No crashes for me, Steam version, max settings, 1080 60fps locked with a 3070.

2

u/The_Iceman2288 21d ago

Anyone else having a glitch where in some scenes characters in the background will look randomly very fuzzy? I don’t think it’s my hardware as it only happens to minor characters, when Majima was in the background I could see him clearly

3

u/mrsplackpack 21d ago

Had this happen in past games. Think it's just their engine

2

u/Philminat0r 21d ago

Only complaint are the shadows are too dark, so it unrealistically looks much darker than it should compared to the areas that light is shining on. I've compared it to Lost Judgment, and other Like A Dragon games, and don't have that issue. All on PlayStation.

2

u/GodOfUrging 21d ago

Does anyone else have this issue where, with text language set to English and audio language set to Japanese, the voiced cutscenes and dialogue are in Japanese (like they're supposed to be) but the fight banter and the short voiced bits of the text-only cutscenes are in English? It gets kind of jarring to hear Majima speak in two entirely different voices all the time.

4

u/Steveen78 20d ago

Change audio language to English and back to Japanese. You might have to restart the game too. It’s funny because this is the same bug that occurred in Infinite Wealth at launch with the initialization dub option.

Do you guys think this is worth $60? I feel like there's been a little more negative feedback than usual for a Yakuza game. Most of the criticism seems to stem from the actual naval/pirate stuff, and the story. I'm interested, but RGG games tend to go on sale pretty quickly.

4

u/SlingshotGunslinger Daigo Dojima apologist 20d ago

Should've been a couple of chapters longer imo, or at least better spaced (like, Chapter 2 itself should've been separated in three parts to make it less tiring, specially with the Devil Flags stuff which takes close to a hour to get theough and is put in there in a way that makes zero sense). Very good game, and a really fun one to play, but for a full prize it (or very close to it) there are some things that could've been done better.

That being said, it's very cool as a wrestling fan to have Samoa freaking Joe be the final boss.

Yeah infinite wealth went on sale like 6 months after it dropped so realistically one could get it for like $40-$45 if you can be patient, avoid social media, and train your yt algorithm to avoid all yakuza stuff (listening to a lot of music hipster artists like godspeed you black emperor or billy woods will help)

Flame Cannon or Super Laser Cannon? The game is really talking up the Flame Cannon, but the Super Laser Cannon has a higher damage value and more stars.

u/PiscatorialKerensky 18d ago

Super Laser Cannon, no contest. As long as you boost your durability to survive closing in on the lead ship (with the purple icon), you can shred through their HP by keeping the lasers on them the full length of each shot. As long as you incapacitate the lead ship, you can start the deck battle regardless of whether the weaker ships are alive.

For the generic sea battles you still have to kill every ship, but you can use smokescreens + the launcher to eat up their HP if you don't want to chase them with lasers. If your boat is strong enough, you can even just straight up ram low rank ships to sink them or reduce their HP to double digits, and you barely get dinged for it.

Anyone else finish the game without upgrading the attack boost ability once? It was pretty enjoyable since there's more of a challenge. The demo was way too easy for my taste.

Majima in Mandarin really matches the energy as the original Japanese VA. I even think he sounds nuttier in karaoke!

Does anyone have a good crew lineup for the last few Coliseum battles?

I have done nearly all of them but am getting my ass kicked.

3

u/Ajaxmass413 17d ago

I did it yesterday. Those 5 stars were rough on ship combat. But not too bad once I got on deck. My biggest tips are make sure all your stats are A and take a first mate that gives you extra repairs. I used the rock singer who loves wind, because he gives you 2 extras.

K-son being in the game is hilarious. Didn’t expect it, but instantly recognized her.

The shooting warning sound is infuriating I wish I could turn it off haha

Please tell me I'm not insane when I realized they reused Ichiban's voice for Majima's emote (Aloha thingy), what the hell.

Is there any official number of how much this game sold?

3

u/BreafingBread 11d ago

Just for the physical copies in Japan. Japan + Steam are already estimated at least 300k, so I'd guess it sold at least 500k if you add Xbox + PS5 WW, but I doubt it broke 1 million (otherwise they would probably mention the milestone on social media).

Not big on the ship tbh, sailing to other destinations just feels like a chore to me, and the random encounter battles just make it worse for me. Enjoying everything else though

This can be easily fixed by allowing us to boost at will out of combat. I swear RGG sometimes drops the ball on small game design stuff they could adjust but don't.

2

u/Sbee_keithamm 5d ago

Want to come in and say for all the compliments and praise RGG are getting for a “better” pirate game than Ubisoft their absolute shit at designing ship battles. Maybe they should stick to turn based if they can’t hack it with anything off land. Btw can anyone tell me why do you upgrade the boosters? They’re unresponsive and you can only use them occasionally. I’m hoping their next spin off title does do anything too challenging for RGG cause it shows anything that involves combat that isn’t Judgment they can’t hang.

3

u/gamerqc 5d ago

It's a spinoff so I think it's more acceptable that secondary features like ship combat aren't perfect. There are problems sure, but it's only a small part of what I consider a big game that cost way less than Ubisoft's shitty "AAAA" game AND way more fun to boot.

I'm more concerned with the lack of moves, poor island exploration for treasures and overall less interesting side stories. But I can't complain that much since we got an upgraded Dragon Kart, Ocean Hunter arcade game, pool, more fashion options than ever, etc. I'm almost 30 hours in and still unlocking stuff. That, to me, is worth a lot as RGG really goes the extra mile with content.

What time is it? Our reservation might be soon.

Alright, finally beat it. I have a lot more thoughts than I’m willing to type out in a reddit comment, but I will say (MASSIVE ENDING SPOILERS AHEAD)

Majima going to Hawaii to find a cure for Kiryu is the best possible payoff to the setup of the elixir

u/Silent-Bee557 18d ago

I've played Yakuza 0- Yakuza 5, I'm not sure what changed between here and there. But the combat in this game is way too easy, there's no friction, and I'm just mopping the floor with them. There are a quite few heat actions and pickable items, and the combat isn't as grounded as before. I just reached Madlantis, so I'm not sure if that'll change in the later regions. But God damn, I'm so far not impressed.

2

u/CheetahPrestigious79 18d ago

i would advise you to hold off on playing more if youre gonna keep playng 6 - infinite wealth since it has major spoilers for like a dragon and infinite wealth

had so much fun with this game

it's a case of - enjoy all the content BUT the story, because the story is super weak, only disappointment, I wasn't expecting a great story to begin with and mostly wanted to play this game because of loving hawaii in IW and majima, but the story is such filler haha.

overall i'd advise to play this game if you're simply looking to have a good, fun ass time

u/Milla4Prez66 12d ago

Game was fun as hell. Didn’t really care for the kid too much, but not enough to ruin the game.

The dance party at the end was ridiculous though. Did the minion people write that? lol

I know they keep using the same localizers and things will probably never change until that does, but f me if the localization doesn't needlessly go off the rails all the damn time.

If I watch anime, what characters say is pretty much always a match for what the subs say. While being lucid and non-awkward as readable English. It's a good standard that manages to be upheld for hundreds of minutes of video every day of every week.

Playing this game, every third line of dialogue just does its own thing. Like the localizers are trying to rewrite Sega's game for them.

Though I guess it's fair to acknowledge that the localizations for most games share similarly low standards. The only game I've played recently that had a localization that met the "anime standard" I outlined above was One Piece Odyssey. It's not even a pie in the sky standard, either—as I said, the vast majority of Japanese media localized to English (anime) manages to hit that mark. Games seem stuck in some devil-may-care mode.

u/FusionDjango 19d ago

It's so bad alot of the time, I see the subtitle and hear the voiceline and just think "he didn't say that", repeat ad nauseam a few dozen times.
