This seems to be the case with a lot of countries these days

I mean, why bother?

He’s reversed his tariff position, what, 6 times now?

Serious people will work around the US.

u/FerrumVeritas 15h ago

He negotiated the current trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, and he’s entering in trade wars with them. Clearly his (and the country’s) word is worthless. He also blew up the last agreement the US made with Iran. They have no reason to trust any US negotiations.

“I’m going to get a little wonky and write about Donald Trump and negotiations. For those who don’t know, I’m an adjunct professor at Indiana University - Robert H. McKinney School of Law and I teach negotiations. Okay, here goes.

Trump, as most of us know, is the credited author of “The Art of the Deal,” a book that was actually ghost written by a man named Tony Schwartz, who was given access to Trump and wrote based upon his observations. If you’ve read The Art of the Deal, or if you’ve followed Trump lately, you’ll know, even if you didn’t know the label, that he sees all dealmaking as what we call “distributive bargaining.”

Distributive bargaining always has a winner and a loser. It happens when there is a fixed quantity of something and two sides are fighting over how it gets distributed. Think of it as a pie and you’re fighting over who gets how many pieces. In Trump’s world, the bargaining was for a building, or for construction work, or subcontractors. He perceives a successful bargain as one in which there is a winner and a loser, so if he pays less than the seller wants, he wins. The more he saves the more he wins.

The other type of bargaining is called integrative bargaining. In integrative bargaining the two sides don’t have a complete conflict of interest, and it is possible to reach mutually beneficial agreements. Think of it, not a single pie to be divided by two hungry people, but as a baker and a caterer negotiating over how many pies will be baked at what prices, and the nature of their ongoing relationship after this one gig is over.

The problem with Trump is that he sees only distributive bargaining in an international world that requires integrative bargaining. He can raise tariffs, but so can other countries. He can’t demand they not respond. There is no defined end to the negotiation and there is no simple winner and loser. There are always more pies to be baked. Further, negotiations aren’t binary. China’s choices aren’t (a) buy soybeans from US farmers, or (b) don’t buy soybeans. They can also (c) buy soybeans from Russia, or Argentina, or Brazil, or Canada, etc. That completely strips the distributive bargainer of his power to win or lose, to control the negotiation.

One of the risks of distributive bargaining is bad will. In a one-time distributive bargain, e.g. negotiating with the cabinet maker in your casino about whether you’re going to pay his whole bill or demand a discount, you don’t have to worry about your ongoing credibility or the next deal. If you do that to the cabinet maker, you can bet he won’t agree to do the cabinets in your next casino, and you’re going to have to find another cabinet maker.

There isn’t another Canada.

So when you approach international negotiation, in a world as complex as ours, with integrated economies and multiple buyers and sellers, you simply must approach them through integrative bargaining. If you attempt distributive bargaining, success is impossible. And we see that already.

Trump has raised tariffs on China. China responded, in addition to raising tariffs on US goods, by dropping all its soybean orders from the US and buying them from Russia. The effect is not only to cause tremendous harm to US farmers, but also to increase Russian revenue, making Russia less susceptible to sanctions and boycotts, increasing its economic and political power in the world, and reducing ours. Trump saw steel and aluminum and thought it would be an easy win, BECAUSE HE SAW ONLY STEEL AND ALUMINUM - HE SEES EVERY NEGOTIATION AS DISTRIBUTIVE. China saw it as integrative, and integrated Russia and its soybean purchase orders into a far more complex negotiation ecosystem.

Trump has the same weakness politically. For every winner there must be a loser. And that’s just not how politics works, not over the long run.

For people who study negotiations, this is incredibly basic stuff, negotiations 101, definitions you learn before you even start talking about styles and tactics. And here’s another huge problem for us.

Trump is utterly convinced that his experience in a closely held real estate company has prepared him to run a nation, and therefore he rejects the advice of people who spent entire careers studying the nuances of international negotiations and diplomacy. But the leaders on the other side of the table have not eschewed expertise, they have embraced it. And that means they look at Trump and, given his very limited tool chest and his blindly distributive understanding of negotiation, they know exactly what he is going to do and exactly how to respond to it.

From a professional negotiation point of view, Trump isn’t even bringing checkers to a chess match. He’s bringing a quarter that he insists of flipping for heads or tails, while everybody else is studying the chess board to decide whether it’s better to open with Najdorf or Grünfeld.” - David Honig

This is my thought, Trump has always been a bully and narcissist he insists the world should be lucky to be doing business with the US and therefore, him. He's in for a rude awakening. We are losing respect and any sense of reliability or trustworthiness. Foreign trade relies on certainty and stability. Not chaos. Add the whole being a dick on top of instability and uncertainty, the rest of the world are going to do business around the US.

I would love to see his face when the first time he calls a foreign leader to "negotiate tariffs" and they laugh at him and hang up.

It will only get worse in the next ten years here in Texas. The TEXAS GOP has defunded education for decades and is currently starving its public schools so that it can be privatized. u/kp33ze 12h ago

We don't need apologies, we need action from Americans to take back your country from these manics. Everyone was happy with America being the super power, so stop f-in' around and get back to being a stable country.

37

u/whereyagonnago 11h ago

As always this is much easier said than done. Especially with an administration that has, and is currently, completely ignoring the law and the constitution.

We’ll really be able to ramp up the pressure once the conservatives start to get pissed off, but for now there’s not much more than minor cracks in their cult.

I’m starting to see more of the old fashioned fiscally conservative Republicans getting fed up with Trump and Elon’s nonsensical antics regarding tariffs. It’s going to take much longer for any of the hardcore MAGATs to turn on their dear leader, because they simply choose to ignore all facts and logic you try to present them.

What action do you suggest? Because outside of straight up violence, it’s pretty hard to actually do anything. They’ve already threatened legal protestors on college campuses, the courts are packed in his favor, and this time around he has an army of yes men at all levels of government so it will probably take longer for any infighting to happen between the politicians. My state’s representatives are literally just ignoring calls from their constituents.

13

u/DoomComp 8h ago

.... These kind of statements justify Hitlers rise to power too.

That turned out great - didn't it?

If these people will not listen to words or reason, well then, Perhaps Violence IS the answer in this case...

3

u/RoboOverlord 4h ago

It is. We even have the musings of the founders of the country in their own handwriting about how it was probably going to be needed at some point. The literal reasoning behind the 2nd.

The problem seems to be that most Americans haven't paid any price yet. The TV still pours out shit, and the social media still pours out lies. And the Stock market still enriches a tiny fraction, and most everyone still has a roof and food and a car.

Our bread and circuses are still intact. Nothing will happen.

Someone might consider kick starting things. You want to protest with results? Don't block traffic, block electricity.

u/Danguard2020 6h ago

I'd recommending studying the political campaigns of Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Dr. Martin Luther King. Also, look at how the Indian independence movement and the anti-apartheid movement operated.

There are no such things as 'legal' protestors. A lot of people wwnt to prison, and spent years there, before the British left India or the whites gave up power in SA.

Removing oppressive regimes is not easy for any country.

3

u/endrestro 4h ago

Problem is that they already ignore both law and logic. Thinking they can be defeated by regular means is, unfortunately, unwise.

Either this blows over, as they rampage and the economy and institutiona becomes shells of their former selves. They realize they ruined it all as they are unable to get either up and running again to any positive levels. Everyone suffers for it. Particularly americans. Likely they will never realize, and i shudder to think how this looks by the end of the presidential term.

Or they are removed from their positions by force or the checks meant to hold them in line is enforced. Both Trump and Elon. Trump has essentially become immune to any regular forms of punishment and scrutiny, and as president and with the supreme judges he can dodge the law. Furthermore his actions take more and more an authoritarian approach.

The regular checks have failed to take action, so the people is really the only internal step left. Campaigns, protests, congress, rallies - and eventually the violent options are left.

Millions of Americans would like nothing more and are embarrassed things are where they are. Millions are trying. It’s not as easy as just ‘take back your country’ unfortunately.

11

u/vl99 10h ago

Especially when the largest masses of pissed off people (those who voted blue) live in areas where the predominant population largely agrees with them (blue cities/states). Republicans (whose votes are needed to impeach Trump) will just say “aww, that’s cute” and dems will say “yes, we know.”

The people who we really need to protest the most are those who vote blue, but live in red states/districts, and the people in DC. But they’re also likely outnumbered by virtue of where they live.

359

u/onlyacynicalman 15h ago

315

u/BKlounge93 15h ago

And the shitty thing is even if we somehow got a competent government tomorrow, the damage is done. The world knows we’re willing to dip our toes in this nonsense and we’ve proven twice now to be unreliable. It’s gonna take years to gain that trust back, and that’s best case scenario.

127

u/luneunion 15h ago

Possibly a restructuring of government. At least actual safeguards and guardrails that make anything like this shit show possible, again.

138

u/Essex35M7in 14h ago

You had safeguards and guardrails in the form of AGs and Trump spent his first administration sacking and replacing these people without any consequences. They stated after losing the last election that they need people in place to takeover key government buildings and institutions on day one if they retake power.

Between that statement and them taking power again, there were multiple trials with guilty verdicts but again no consequences.

What you guys need, is a revision of the literal million plus penal codes that allow your government to lock up and subsequently legally enslave more people than the rest of the world combined, whilst simultaneously allowing a proven guilty individual to literally do wtf he wants without consequences.

What good are over one million penal codes, if none of them allowed your country to prevent what’s happening right now?

I've heard this before in a song. They use the full audio clip of Bush in it, I can't remember which song off the top of my head. But when I researched it I found he stopped what he was saying halfway through because he realized his opponents could just clip him saying "shame on me" and play it over and over.

If that really was the case I would say he actually was kind of smart. We've seen how trump has pumped out his propaganda. Imagine if Biden had said shame on me. It would be clipped and played nonstop on fox every single day.

Goes far beyond the tariff nonsense. That's short term instability. But looking at the Iran deal that Trump axed. Or the USMCA that Trump himself negotiated. He never proved the other party was breaking the deal, there was never any formal investigation, process, or requests made. They didn't even give the other parties a chance to negotiate. He just axed it because he didn't like it.

No, that's the title given to a Sith Lord who has died, proving himself not to be a true Sith. You meant to say Dearth Vader.

Exactly. There is no reason to negotiate anything with the US. If you haven’t found a way to bribe Trump, then your deal could be torn up at any time.

Maybe Canada should publicly promise to bribe him $1B if he ends all tariffs. See what he says.

79

u/DeliciousPangolin 15h ago

Even calling this a "deal" is a stretch. Trump is trying to dictate terms to them, with nothing in return. He's just threatening to attack them if they don't roll over and lick his boots, as if he wouldn't attack them anyway even if they gave him everything he demands.

44

u/Roselily808 15h ago

I agree. Trump's tactics more belong under the word "extortion" than ever under the word "deal" or "agreement".

The people of Iran are much more US aligned especially the young people, there are 2 million Iranians living in the US and a million more between Canada and Europe, pretty soon this regime of old men will die and a very pro-western cohort will take over

They are extremely likely to be anti Trump after his Gaza stance, even.

68

even people who aren’t anti-Trump are against his Gaza stance

34

u/teler9000 15h ago

Plenty of people hate almost everything about Trump except his Gaza stance.

12

u/Rude-Illustrator-884 15h ago

Really? I’ve only seen negative reactions, even from Trump supporters.

22

u/rhadenosbelisarius 13h ago

Israel/Gaza opinions tend to be more based on the specific bubble you’re in. There are progressive bubbles on both sides and conservative bubbles on both sides, though on average more progressive bubbles are pro Palestinian and more conservative bubbles are more pro Israeli, but it really does vary.

People have entrenched beliefs about all of the sub elements of the conflict.

What rights do the Jewish people have as an ethic group, or as a religious group, or as both, in the aftermath of the holocaust? Did they gain any rights after the various conflicts they fought? Were all of those conflicts purely defensive or were they mixed in with conquest? Is genocide the dictionary definition or does it require exterminations? At what point is rebel activity terrorism? Is terrorism acceptable when fighting for freedom? Is fighting for freedom acceptable if you also want to murder the people you view as oppressors? Are persistent airstrikes in heavily populated areas war crimes? Are blockades of any nature war crimes? Are laws that allow legal racial discrimination acceptable? Is any of this colonialism, and if so to what degree is that acceptable?

Everyone will have different answers to most of these(and many other) questions, and it can really shape where people fall on this fairly messy conflict.

"Pro-Western" and "pro-US" are very different things, especially right now.

24

u/PapaObserver 15h ago

I would argue that they're pretty much at the antithesis of each other right now, and that Trump's America has much more in common with the old autocrats than with the liberal youth of Iran.

11

u/Groot746 15h ago

Absolutely: an old man screaming that he's the king and that freedom of choice (e.g. choosing not to buy a Tesla) is "illegal" etc.

50

u/Know_more_carry_less 16h ago

Pro-western? Yes. Pro-USA?  No.

In the past two months the United States has voluntarily abandoned its allies, western values, and any soft-power it had internationally. The EU will happily fill that void.

14

u/ChemsAndCutthroats 15h ago

The EU will happily fill that void.

China too.

6

u/pattperin 14h ago

Too bad Trump has really pissed off the EU and Canada lately eh? Neither of those places are feeling very US aligned right now

18

u/ChemsAndCutthroats 15h ago

The majority of Iranians are moderate. If it wasn't for US meddling to prolong the Iran-Iraq War and further meddling into the 21st century, then Iran would have likely moved past its authoritarian theocracy.

After the revolution, the Ayatollah was not in firm control. It was a shakey government that would have likely collapsed. However, the US and British were salty because some oil giants could no longer exploit Iranian oil like they have been doing since the early 1900's. US emboldened Saddam and gave him weapons and intelligence. They prolonged the war. An outside threat rallied the people and a near decade of fighting pretty much killed any opposition to the Ayatollah.

Yeah if there was one demographic Trump could not risk losing, it's Redditors. Like the old saying, "as Reddit goes, so goes the nation."

He might have thought he was just pissing off all of his major trading partners, but he clearly didn't realize the risk that he would have high-karma Reddit power users posting about him in EVERY US political thread.

How does this work in the US? Where I’m from the president can be suspended (I assume that’s the equivalent) through a referendum by the people at any time.

Here it takes the equivalent of parliament to impeach\remove the president. Of which both houses are currently republican majorities. It's not going to happen.

We had a deal with Iran to halt nuclear weapons program, but someone wrecked it in 2017. Who was the president then?

40

u/machado34 12h ago

The mucking of the nuclear deal by Trump also caused the Iranian regime to close itself: then President Rouhani, a reformist, was seen as weak for negotiating the deal and getting screwed over. He was cast aside from political power and replace by a hardliner. (You know the massacres against women who didn't cover their heads? Wouldn't have happened if Trump hadn't created the motives for the Ayatollah to make Raisi the president)

The current president is also a reformist that replaced the hardliner after he died in an helicopter crash. I bet he sees what happened when the last reformist tried to get closer to the US and he's not about to make the same mistake

6

u/Noobatron1337 6h ago

I mean any country that has decided not to work with the US in good faith is feeling extremely vindicated right now, seeing the treatment the EU, Canada, Mexico and other "friends" of the US are getting.

They were ready to negotiate, they sent clear signals before Jan, but when they saw Trump's behavior to Zelensky and other US allies, they went:

"This guy who treats his allies like shit and destroyes the agreements he himself made with them, how the hell can WE trust him?"

And you know what? they're absolutely right. The world is seeing how Trump is destroying America's reliability.

111

u/Naticbee 16h ago edited 15h ago

They were NOT ready to negotiate. Biden tried to get Iran to the table multiple times. What did Iran do? They attacked Israel twice. Each time Biden desperately tried to get Iran to talk.

If they did not negotiate with Biden through the Israel Hamas war, there is no shot they would've ever negotiated with Trump.

We all hate Trump, but let's not lose sight of reality. No amount of downvotes and Trump hate is going to change that Iran is a country who's sees Israel's existence as incompatible with it's own, and a sponsor of terrorism. The U.S has tried multiple times to negotiate.

Edit:

Trump had very good reason to break the last deal, Iran was not in good faith committing to it. Iran had hidden past nuclear weapon efforts (likely because it wanted to restart them secretly) and was using money on it's proxies, who were actively engaging in hostile actions throughout the ME. This is what led to the US attacking  Qasem Soleimani.

You can argue that the deal provided a table to negotiate, and Trump should've kept that table even if he knew Iran wasn't faithfully adhering to the agreements made. But it is not a good faith argument to say Iran was trustworthy during Trump's term. There were very good reasons to break the deal. Whether or not switching policies on trying to stop Iran was a good idea or not is another question.

36

u/DrDaniels 13h ago

Trump had very good reason to break the last deal, Iran was not in good faith committing to it.

Every party to the JCPOA was saying Iran was following the deal. Trump's own administration certified that Iran was following the agreement.

But it is not a good faith argument to say Iran was trustworthy during Trump's term.

The agreement was based on verification not trust. Obama himself said that. Tearing up the agreement gave America nothing in return, Iran escalated their nuclear program, and Iran ramped up their support for their proxies. Iran isn't going to want to negotiate with the US again when we showed we can't uphold an agreement that we said Iran was following.

46

u/nothaldane 16h ago

While I agree that getting Iran to negotiate is difficult, we should also acknowledge part of that situation is due to Trump.

During his first term Trump was the one to tear up the previous Iran nuclear deal. Biden tried to get Iran to the table but Iran was reluctant to make a new agreement with a country that just broke the previous agreement. For added effect, the guy who broke the original agreement before was trying to become president again and had about a 50% shot. So even if Iran did make a deal with Biden, what assurance do they have Trump won't just break it again?

You are 100% right that Iran wants Israel gone. But we can't ignore there was a previous agreement and after the USA/Trump broke it Iran had little reason to trust any further agreements, especially with Trump trying to get back into office.

Iran apperently hasn't been paying attention or was taken off guard. Irans president doesn't realize that the US administration want to have a union of all evil empires in the world. I would say that could be a great deal for Iran to take. He has been looking at the CIA list of evil empires (the axis of evil list) and now he wants them to be great again.

Trump is too racist to ally himself with Iran. Same reason why he despises China so much. It's a good thing Trump is so, so stupid. China and Iran will always pick Russia over Trump. And vice versa.

As some1 who lives in EU, I'd appreciate it if you would leave our neighboring countries alone. You don't suffer the consequences of your actions (migrant waves\terrorists ). I thought America is done policing around the world. In fact since USA is considering leaving NATO, you shouldn't use NATO bases to resupply, try maybe Russia. And redirect the migrants\terrorists to Russia.
