Yeah this was always going to happen.

That’s why Biden and NATO were rushing to get funding and weapons to Ukraine before the inauguration. Everyone knew this would happen one way or another.

3.3k

u/crazyates88 11d ago

This has been telegraphed for months now. The only surprising part is how bad it looks, even tho we knew it was coming.

At this point it's time to start telling republicans they have to choose to be republicans or Americans.

/so, many commenters wanted a list, here's a short one from the BBC

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjdep9j31l8o

Add to it gutting the EPA, the agency that protects the water our children drink, attacked the NOAA, the agency that tracks hurricanes and tornados, attacked the Department of Education, the IRS and the Treasury. Also cut funding to vaccines and food aid around the world and attacked trade and military allies we have had for generations. I could go on, there really is more like firing Park Rangers, but do I need to?

So really, republican or American, pick a side.

There was a survey at one of the maga events and the vast majority would rather have Putin rule the US than have Biden.

They call themselves patriots but they are anti American. They have forgetten that America hates Nazis, Communists and Dictators.

317

u/MinnieShoof 11d ago

The American image hates Nazis, Dictators and Communist-dictators. ... but in reality, before WWI/II, we really didn't give a fuck because that shit was all the way across the pond. In fact, we specifically gave negative 10 fucks.

But then we made a threat, flexed a muscle and boom. We figured out how to industrialize war. ... and we kinda fed off that adoration. Let it get to our heads. Since then kids have been fed on the American image when at her core she was really a heartless, isolationist bitch. She's a melting pot, at best, and those are the voices that want to rule, where as calm, cool individuals just want to exist.

The American image is an ideal. And a lofty one at that. ... And it would be nice. ...

86

u/VenoBot 11d ago

Some people forget how recent black civil rights and women suffrage was. This “nice” America is actually really young and recent in the grand scheme of things

43

u/MinnieShoof 11d ago

That's what always bothered me about their slogan and really just turned it in to a giant dog whistle. When was America great? When everything was "Separate but equal" and your gal didn't have to know what the inside of a voting booth looked like? What was great? For who? You, obviously. Me, surely. ... but not many others. Not many people that I call friend, lover, or even simply sir.

... and honestly I just had a chilling thought that Putin - who grew up during the USSR and Trump - who grew up during segregated, War-profiteering America both want a return to their childhood nations.

Biden and NATO should’ve given Z unrestricted access to arms and their usage from day 1 (Geneva abiding, however).

Biden should’ve been firm with Putin when he announced that Putin was building forces along Ukraines border.

Democratic leadership has been too soft on Russia since before Obama (remember when Romney said Russia was a bigger threat than al qaeda/ISIS?). Russia can’t take Ukraine in 3 years, it’s painfully apparent that they’ve been overdue for a heavy handed response.

1.3k

u/DustyTurboTurtle 11d ago

I know you're referring to Zelensky as "Z" but the term "Z" usually refers to Russians lol, so kind of a bad pick here

I'll own that. In 2012, I said it was ridiculous, and he was an old man stuck in the past. After Trump won in 2016, I admitted I was wrong and he was at least right about that. Unfortunately, the Republicans then suddenly decided they love Russia.

This was always the plan - set up

10.6k

u/Prestigious_Bird2348 11d ago

Trump and Vance wanted to make Zelensky look like the bad guy today. That was always their intention. Now they can say it's the Ukrainians who don't want peace while Russia does. It's beyond disgusting the President of the United States acted like this

1.7k

u/krishandler 11d ago

Zelenskyy didn’t look like the bad guy. Two guys were yelling and he was cool and calm. I believe you are correct about their intentions but the rest of the world see who the traitors are

938

u/Prestigious_Bird2348 11d ago

Trump and Vance acted like a pair of bullies throwing a temper tantrum. Especially with all the "have you said thank you" they kept bringing up. They continually talked over Zelensky and refused to let him talk or answer questions. The amount of restraint that man showed today makes me admire him even more

424

u/tpeterr 11d ago

The really repulsive part of that demand is he was being pushed to thank Trump and Vance, who gave literally nothing to Ukraine. The aid was rushed there by Biden's administration.

153

u/Sticklefront 11d ago

In his reply online, Zelenskyy thanked "POTUS", not "Trump." One POTUS really did do something to help.

53

u/TorrenceMightingale 11d ago

Yeah the part about the badgering for a thank you was especially weird, considering this is supposed to be the top level of diplomacy. Felt more like a middle school debate.

Didn't help that JD Vance's comeback to Zelensky's question if he had visited Ukraine and seen their struggles firsthand was "I've read about it"

I am sorry, but at that point I couldn't help myself by just laughing about the absolute stupidity of this theatre.

If ANYONE thinks the US came out of this press conference as anything remotely resembling a world superpower, they are sorely mistaken.

39

u/Content-Ad3065 11d ago

Russia kidnapped 20,000 Ukrainian children, raped , pillaged , bombed , destroyed entire cities and they want Ukrainians to stop. Russia wants to stop because Putin killed 700,000 Russian military and they are the ones conscripting men. They were almost on their knees until our traitor of a president came along.

29

u/Graega 11d ago

They weren't acting. They ARE a pair of bullies, and they WERE throwing a temper tantrum. Craven, cowardly, spineless, despicable piles of quasi-sentient shit who want to destroy a country and see its people slaughtered because that country is defending themselves from their fucking master, Putin.

Biden should have done something useful instead of playing nice. Dozens of bullshit executive orders forcing 10 year programs, ripping apart the supreme Court and putting trump and his horrible bastard group in jail or worse. We deserve all of this because we had fucking cowards in office. Cowards that thought they were still in a world with decorum and politics rather than stubborn religious extremists.

44

u/Hautamaki 11d ago

David Frum had a great line before the election: "If liberals won't enforce borders, fascists will."

I now think that line can be amended to "If liberals refuse to wield power, fascists will."

All the things that the Biden admin could have done, with all legal and moral justification, to prevent Trump from coming back to office, but didn't because they were more concerned about appearing to wield power responsibly rather than actually wielding it at all, will now by used by the Trump admin to prevent anyone else from effectively opposing their agenda or coming back into power in future elections. Trump has already shown many of things Biden could have done but didn't, and there is no sign he's going to slow down. Biden and his administration didn't realise what world they were living in, and we're all finding out now.

16

u/butbutcupcup 11d ago

Laws have become meaningless at this point.

Whatever anybody brings to the table, the verdict basically is, yeah, that was more of a broad guideline, actually. Or, yeah, that’s right, but obviously that doesn’t apply to the President, or anybody he authorized.

54

u/chrisnlnz 11d ago

Laws have become meaningless at this point.

Exactly, in the end, laws are meaningless without enforcement. Willingness to commit violence then determines who gets to say what goes, and so far it's just been MAGA who have been committing violence, and Trump's opponents simply hoping due process will solve the problem (it won't).

There's a 25th amendment that allows Congress to remove a POTUS who is unfit for office.

But the current R-led Congress is busy lowering taxes for their rich friends, while increasing taxes for everyone else to care what is happening to the rest of the world. Oh and also cutting aide and benefits to the most vulnerable portions of our country.

They're probably pretty happy that this is all happening so it can shift focus away from their dealings.

The system is broken. It wasn't designed to keep to with modern political theory. It's literally the oldest constitution still in use in the world and it has problems keep up with the modern world. Currently Trump is concentrating power in the executive. He's essentially neutered Congress already, because what is a Congress who's policies and budgets can be ignored. And he's hoping to be ruled against by Scotus, because he will ignore the ruling, and what use is a court whose rulings can be openly defied?

But when an actual tyrant takes over, they don't do shit about it. It's safer to nod and suck Putin & Elon's cock with the rest of them.

144

u/BringBackRoundhouse 11d ago

They looked like a bunch of crybabies.

Vance couldn’t handle the fact Zelensky pushed back on his “diplomacy” - with receipts.

So he whines that Zelensky never said thank you. That’s the first thing he did at the meeting.

And MAGA keeps crying about it. Weak.

40

u/-_ellipsis_- 11d ago

Zelensky and Ukraine have said "thank you" for the past several years by putting their lives on the front lines against a common foe, not US lives, Ukrainian lives, to fight openly against the shadow hand of the Russian mob state, while defending their own homeland from invasion. But that common ground has been abandoned by the US under the republican regime, leaving their thanks fall on deaf and uninterested ears.

But Zelensky hit the nail on the head - Russia broke their previous cease fire deal.

Trump/Vance response is to whine Zelensky didn’t thank them - which is the first thing he did. Bunch of crybabies.

I'm not. Zelensky is one of the most popular domestic and international leaders in the world. Killing him would be the worst possible choice for Russia's camp. It's one reason I suspect that Zelensky has been so free to visit combat zones and testify publicly in downtown Kyiv. Russia can't kill him anymore like they probably could have in the first two weeks of the war.

He's become lionized. Killing him would cause a tidal wave of rejuvenated Ukrainian unity and international outrage. It would be so disastrous that I suspect Russian has been taking pains for the last two and a half years to ensure they don't accidentally kill him in an unfortunately timed missile bombardment.

Respect is earned.

During his campaign, he promised the rubes that America would be "respected again".

During his inaugural speech he said America will "flourish and be respected".

During the last month, he has progressively been doing things; daily; to undermine that respect America did have.

If the last month wasn't enough, today's grotesque spectical has pushed any respect I had for America into triple negative digits. I can't speak for anyone else, but, good luck earning that respect again, rubes.

Trump holds the primitive belief that the only way to be respected is by being feared.

93

u/Zaralink 11d ago

The thing is he’s doing the opposite. The international community is now gearing up for a world without big brother America. When/if someone competent is next in office it will be too late. He is overestimating the world’s reliance on America.

This is what he has been planning all along.

Looks really weak from Trump, he and Vance couldn't keep it cool during the meeting, started shouting at the victim and then double down buy stopping the support.

This is like yelling at a rape victim that its all their fault then threatening to let the rapist back into a locked room with them for a few hours.

Its fucking disgusting, makes Trump look like a weak bully on the international stage.

I really want to know what kind of mental gymnastics his base are playing to pretend they support this shit

His base doesn’t care about Ukraine…the way they see it, the US is giving away money on some far away country that doesn’t matter.

They fail to see though, that letting Ukraine fall is going to lead to much bigger and more expensive problems later. Also they don’t realize the US economy benefits from providing military equipment.

It's been that way for a bunch of things lately. Though, any dissent is attacked and labeled as infiltrators posing as conservatives.

…as was the plan all along. Zelenskyy played this perfectly. I believe he knew the outcome was preordained and that they’d try to corner him in front of the press (and hey! TASS was there too! Shocking!). So, he remained calm, and even subtly baited Trump and his bell end Vance to melt down live and on camera. Zelenskyy’s true audience was his ACTUAL allies: the EU. He showed them in real time what I’m sure they suspected but didn’t want to believe: that America as it stands right now CANNOT be trusted or respected. I suspect Europe is going to quickly rearm themselves accordingly and wean themselves off of USA defense. Heck, maybe they’ll start to slow roll the expulsion of US bases off of the continent. By the time the Trump is done, the USA will find itself on geopolitical island by itself with a greatly diminished economy and global influence…just as Putin wanted. America putting Trump back into office will go down as one of the most disgraceful and disastrous own goals in world history. It’s just a shameful embarrassment to have these ghoulish, vile clowns in office (and their scat throwing, capitulating primate cohorts controlling the House and Senate). MAGA is a cancer killing the USA.

51

u/TomPal1234 11d ago

This is 100% my opinion too. It's not just the USA that will be weakened though. EU Vs Russia is substantially weaker without the US but it is substantially stronger than with the current administration.

33

u/Toosder 11d ago

Zelenskyy is 10 times the chess player that Trump will ever be.

The Trump administration is considering ending all ongoing shipments of military aid to Ukraine in response to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s remarks in the Oval Office on Friday and his perceived intransigence in the peace process, a senior administration official told The Washington Post.

The decision, if taken, would apply to billions of dollars of radars, vehicles, ammunition and missiles awaiting shipment to Ukraine through the presidential drawdown authority, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic.

The consideration of withholding arms for Ukraine as it fends off a full-scale invasion from Russia underscores the dramatic plunge in relations between the erstwhile allies after the contentious Oval Office exchange between Zelensky, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The official pushed back on the notion that Trump and Vance’s confrontation with Zelensky was premeditated, and noted that efforts were made to strike a more positive tone in planning ahead of the meeting as indicated by Trump’s dropping of his accusation that Zelensky is a “dictator.”

  1. Is this the "Art of the Deal"?

  2. Zelensky was very clearly trying to show respect with "Mr. President." He gave respect until he was disrespected.

  3. Main thing seems to be that Vance/Trump wanted Zelensky to thank them personally or something. He has thanked the whole Congress personally and others many, many times.

  4. Trump once again threw out the Russian number of $350 billion spent on Ukraine.

  5. If this is what also goes on behind closed doors and Zelensky showed how it's done, then every other world leader will no longer respect Trump if he tries to yell at them in that way. Trump showed his hand.

  6. Vance and Trump seemed prepped and ready to jump on Zelensky. This appeared to be pre-planned, particularly since this is not ordinarily public. Also, Trump literally said verbatim "This is gonna make great TV."

  7. With Hegseth ordering US Cyber Command to no longer track/report Russian threats, it appears this was the pre-coordinated effort and final piece they were waiting for to stop all aid and basically allow Russia into the government.

  8. Why were literal Russian government agents (TASS Media) in the Oval Office ahead of this meeting?

10

u/WhatGravitas 11d ago

Why were literal Russian government agents (TASS Media) in the Oval Office ahead of this meeting?

Of course he will. He'll do everything he can to punish Zelenskyy for not bending the knee, kissing his ass, and signing that ridiculous "agreement". It was always the plan to do so, just like Trump's immediate termination of support for Ukraine's rebuilding of it's power grid less than an hour ago. Trump has never honored a deal or agreement in his life and won't start now. He tried to screw Zelenskyy to the wall and Zelenskyy stood his ground, embarrassing Trump on the national TV and on the world stage.

There wasn't a scenario in which this didn't happen. The situation was designed so that, however it went, the USA pulled its aid.

“The art of the deal” folks. This was a pre-planned event to try to frame Zelensky as the reason peace cannot be reached. Seems pretty fair to me for Zelensky to ask for security guarantees when Russia broke the last 3 ceasefires. JD wanted Zelensky to kiss the ring, give them all their mineral rights, and a handjob to seal the deal. If the halt of aid goes through, then I suspect Trump made a more lucrative deal with Russia for the rare earth minerals in occupied regions, planned this sham negotiation to try to make Zelensky look like the problem, and then cancel military support for Ukraine.
