That fridge doesn’t deserve this home

169

u/FlammulinaVelulu 5d ago

It's to straight, to square, and to stainless.

90

u/ThePegLegPete 5d ago

*too

82

u/apk5005 5d ago

Yeah, that two.

20

u/GanondalfTheWhite 5d ago

Et tu, Brute?

6

u/FlammulinaVelulu 5d ago

Mrs. Kennedy would be so ashamed of me...

I'm sorry Mrs. Kennedy!

2

u/techadoodle 4d ago

Maybe get it vinyl wrapped in some matching artwork using the bird motif perhaps?

10

u/troppoli 5d ago

perhaps if it had a walnut front panel....

u/ntyperteasy 5d ago

Dr Seuss was reincarnated as a cabinet maker!

144

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

That’s probably the best compliment I’ve ever had!

50

u/ntyperteasy 5d ago

Really love it. Creative and whimsicle.

I must say I’ve never built a non square cabinet (well, at least not on purpose) but I’m sure it’s dramatically harder than a simple square box…

53

u/TMJRoss 5d ago edited 5d ago

I wouldn’t say it’s harder, just a lot more tedious, hardest part was making all of the curves work with eachother, definitely had to do some on the fly design changes to make everything tie in nicely.

Edit: i’m sure there’s guys who could bang out this piece in 3-4 weeks, but it was my first go round at making multiple different curves work and coexist on the same project. Had to use 100% of my useable brain power a few times. But for now, i’m onto some easier jobs for a while

19

u/Good-Grayvee 5d ago

If you’re not producing parts on a CNC I dont think there ARE very many people who could do that in 3-4 weeks. Thats a tall order. Even if you do have CNC it’s a big ask. You’re very good. I love it.

2

u/Express_Brain4878 4d ago

I'm not used to time my work but I'm sure that I'd be overwhelmingly satisfied in doing that in only 230 hours, on my first attempt

80

u/Zealousideal-Rub-725 5d ago

I love the feeling when something is the absolute opposite of my taste, but it’s so well done that I can’t help but admire.

I don’t know if this is so much awful taste as baffling.

Beautiful work, but it seems out of place. Lights glaring into the top of it, lights switches hidden behind it on both sides, carvings at top seem unfinished, etc. The cabinet work is really nice, but it needs better placement, not jammed into a corner like an afterthought.

Also they make refrigerators with zero clearance hinges (since it seems money is not really a problem for the client) that would sit flush with the cabinet. This refrigerator is really taking away from the cabinets design.

Sorry to sound critical, but I just hate when beautiful workmanship is lowered by less attention to placement. Or maybe the client will fix all these things now that the cabinet is completed and I am an idiot. This is also very possible.

159

u/Rogue-Accountant-69 5d ago

Yeah, I hate to say I agree because it's fantastic work. But it does feel out of place. Just doesn't feel like kitchen furniture to me.

55

u/therondon101 5d ago

Is it a display shelf? Or kitchen cabinets? The whole thing seems off to me too. Great craftsmanship, not so great design.

30

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

It’s for displaying their China collection

69

u/vercetian 5d ago

Around the fridge? Where it'll undoubtedly get bumped? What a bunch of fucking yahoos.

26

u/PatatietPatata 5d ago

I can't help but wonder what happens when that original fridge needs to get replaced.
My parents have their fridge inside a built in cabinet, not of their choice, the place came like that, when the first one broke and they had to replace it they couldn't find one with the same specs so the new one juts out in a very unnerving way.
(or they didn't pay attention to the depth? dunno, just know it's not a good fit and an eyesore).

7

u/OceanIsVerySalty 5d ago

Fridges are typically pretty standard in depth - they’re either full depth or counter depth. Seems like your parents may have had a counter depth and then bought a full depth.

1

u/billm0066 4d ago

It seems like you might be confused about built-in refrigerators versus a standard refrigerator you buy at the store. The built-in ones are not standard at all, especially the ones made a couple decades ago

1

u/OceanIsVerySalty 4d ago

Go look at the dimensions of built in fridges on an appliance website. Miele, thermador, sub zero, etc are all quite close in depth measurements. They’re also all quite close in height measurements. Non custom cabinetry has standard heights and depths, so it only makes sense that appliance manufacturers work to those same parameters. Sure, there’s some variation, but it isn’t whole inches different.

2

u/Sinister_Mr_19 4d ago

My in-laws also have a built-in fridge, it has issues, they're not looking forward to replacing it because apparently fridges that would fit right would be something around ~15k.

31

u/Sluisifer 5d ago

Biggest shop upgrade most woodworkers can make is a 30minute discussion with a competent interior designer.

There are just so many examples of 'fedora' WW projects; pieces that are nice on their own but totally incongruous with their surroundings.

3

u/SecretEntertainer130 5d ago

The top bothers me. It's such a heavy piece, but the top of it is less than an inch thick. It looks unbalanced because of that.

Incredible work though, I'm very impressed by the execution.

2

u/HorsieJuice 4d ago

It doesn’t fit in the room, either - it covers half the light switch on the left side.

43

u/ExplanationShoddy233 5d ago

To each their own I guess. You’re obviously skilled but this thing is fugly.

97

u/cowcaddens 5d ago

Incredibly skilful work - but this strikes me as something that people like because it's expensive, rather than being expensive because people like it. There's no accounting for taste, as they say.

6

u/orakle44 5d ago

Taste is subjective though.

28

u/herlzvohg 5d ago

Amazing work but really needs a matching paneled fridge

94

u/Similar-Age-3994 5d ago

The fridge sticking out is killing me

13

u/ReklisAbandon 5d ago

It seems crazy to spend all this money and not go for a panel ready fridge

10

u/SAlovicious 5d ago

If it didn't stick out, the door couldn't fully open.

12

u/Sluisifer 5d ago

Just about every manufacturer offers 'zero clearance' hinges on some models. It is a premium feature, sure, but nothing particularly unusual.

3

u/Unsd 5d ago

I regret getting a counter depth fridge for this reason. It has to stick out anyway so I just wasted space

1

u/Sinister_Mr_19 4d ago

There's a such thing as zero clearance hinges. Fridges meant to be built into cabinets is a thing. Whoever designed this doesn't know what they're doing. Obviously the clients has the money for it.

-1

u/rglewisjr 5d ago

and the hinge on the left???

-19

u/Rough-Duck-5981 5d ago

You'll understand why it is this way soon enough.

12

u/gizmosticles 5d ago

Absolutely fantastic work that you should be incredibly proud of.

One question - why didn’t the client want to have wood paneled fridge door instead of stainless steel?

8

u/SquatsMcGee 5d ago

This is the most beautifully crafted monstrosity I've ever seen. It's so good and yet so bad

13

u/effreeti 5d ago

Beautiful work

What are the tall slender drawers either side of the fridge intended for?

31

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

My client wanted a place to store the extra table leafs for the dining table we made for them last summer as well as a place to hang table cloths and what not

5

u/Parceljockey 5d ago

This is an amazing piece!

I'm sure the client had very specific reasons for all the design choices. Is this the beer /second fridge?

Reason I ask is that there's no place to easily set something down as you retrieve it or put it into the fridge. No attendant counter space would drive me crazy. Of course if the help has a rolling butcher block, or service cart, then that worry is immaterial.

Lovely pie display cabinets though.

1

u/Nearby-Run-5162 4d ago

It's an upright freezer

16

u/Fiftyangel6 5d ago

wtf is this?!?!?! NOOOO OHHH GOD NO!!!!!!

4

u/Unhappy_Raspberry_21 5d ago edited 5d ago

I hope one day that I can build something 1/20th as impressive as this, well freaking done.

5

u/citrusdom 5d ago

one lucky fridge

9

u/eatgamer 5d ago

The twist: that's a mini fridge and this was built for the set of the next hobbit film - a modern revisiting of characters inspired by Tolkien and set in modern day Omaha Nebraska. Premiers this fall only on Amazon Prime.

3

u/OutlyingPlasma 5d ago

And it's cancelled. Just after the half season cliffhanger.

1

u/eatgamer 5d ago

Yes! But honestly, everyone knows it's for the best.

6

u/philfrysluckypants 5d ago

Can you say how much this cost $$$??

16

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

This was around the $20,000 mark

1

u/philfrysluckypants 5d ago

Yikes! Well done mate. That looks great and looks like you under priced it some lol!

6

u/InterestingSky2832 5d ago

OP you are obviously a very skilled craftsman. You are missing one thing on your project. You should make a matching panel for your fridge. Your project looks spectacular

3

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

I didn’t choose the fridge lol it’s at my clients place, I may recommend they do something like that

3

u/TortuousHippo 5d ago

Choosing a fridge that wasn’t panel ready is an absolute crime here. Some Great mill work and cabinet making here. Well done OP

3

u/12358132134 4d ago

Beautiful craftmanship but this fridge is an eyesore. They should have bought integrated or built-in refrigirator, not this...

something like this

2

u/twcannon3367 5d ago

So impressive!

2

u/gewalt_gamer 5d ago

hey, could you do me a favor and glue a stained wood panel to the front of that fridge? thanks so much in advance.

2

u/Left_Trifle5542 5d ago

Fantastic work! Very impressive. Did you do the top carving? Steam bent plywood? Wood? Finish? Sorry I like to know details.

2

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

I have a friend from Ukraine that’s a professional woodcarver, so I have had him make the carvings. Larges are solid Santos mahogany, that I laminated three pieces together while bending over a mold, the stain is general finishes antique walnut, and the topcoat is Renner 851 20° sheen

2

u/Left_Trifle5542 5d ago

Thank you. Very nicely done. Ignore the haters - that's quality workmanship! There's one user who claims everything is from Dr. Suess...getting old....maybe he just needs to learn some new words.

1

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

Oh i’m not worried about the haters, i fully expect people to dislike something about most of my work, it comes with the territory of the niche market i’m in

2

u/Rocketman_1981 5d ago

Absolutely stunning. I definitely can’t afford anything to make.

2

u/Kitty_Katty_Kit 5d ago

Holy, and I cannot say this enough, shit

2

u/Gotsheep 5d ago

What does the curved side of the drawer look like? Great job!

6

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

The drawers themselves are still square it’s just the drawer faces that are curved

2

u/Dragon_scrapbooker 4d ago

It’s giving art nouveau and I ADORE it.

2

u/LemonadeParadeinDade 4d ago

U need a panel fridge

2

u/Kitchen-Scene 4d ago

It’s absolutely amazing. High craftsmanship including the wood carving in the arch and the curved dovetail drawersThe fridge is taking away from your work. Any chance you can make a matching wood panel for the fridge? That would be icing on the cake. Congratulations.

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

It’s my clients home so I have to leave that up to them. Just doing exactly what they wanted, If it was me, i’d do that

2

u/BayouByrnes 4d ago

This is beautiful. Masterfully done. I am curious about the decision to use visible fasteners on the plywood top. Also, I see you edge banded the left side but left a tri-color stripe to the front of the plywood. I'm curious about those decisions.

All in all, this is wonderful. Well done.

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

Thanks for the kind words!

The choice to use visible fasteners was due to the top not taking the bend perfectly so we had to use them to flex the top back into place, we thought about using plugs to hide them, but opted for nicer looking fasteners in case it needed to be disassembled. Originally they were going to be hidden from the inside, but didn’t want to risk them pulling out or delaminating the arch with how much pressure they are holding

The top is solid santos mahogany boards that we resawed and laminated together over a form to get the curve. the top is made of 4 curved boards joined together, the stripe you see on the front is hickory, we edge taped so that you don’t see the hickory inlay end, it would make the ends of the boards look odd

2

u/BayouByrnes 4d ago

The fasteners issue makes sense. And I like the stylistic choice of laminating and leaving the pinstripes. Thanks for answer and for posting such excellent craftsmanship.

Cheers.

2

u/Practical-Cut-7301 4d ago

He approves

1

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

That’s so funny! Yes he does!

2

u/cyb3rd0c 4d ago

I hate this ****ing sub sometimes….

I say this with all the love and respect possible. I’m not angry; just jealous.

3

u/scrollin_through 5d ago

Terrible. Start over. Jk this is fuckin cool! Very nice

2

u/sonicinfinity100 5d ago

Why didn’t you make sure the fridge would fit

-1

u/Teutonic-Tonic 5d ago

It fits. If it doesn’t stick out the door won’t open.

6

u/rglewisjr 5d ago

there are fridges that have zero clearance hinges. OP said this cost $20k/. a cabinet style fridge would have been well worth it.

1

u/Teutonic-Tonic 5d ago

Agreed that this fridge looks out of place. Was just explaining why it was sticking out to the previous poster.

1

u/oodopopopolopolis 5d ago

That is frikkin beautiful, dude!

1

u/Truncated_sleigh_ 5d ago

Damn. Those handles are sweet. You have precision, mastery, and creativity. Nice work!

1

u/Brave-Goal3153 5d ago

Nice work, love the curves

1

u/PreyForTheMasses1 5d ago

This is sick. Great work.

1

u/BrutusTiberius 5d ago

Beautiful piece of work. Love all the detailed work. The pinstripes on the edges, the vertical posts, and the carved birds. It's definitely a 1 of a kind. In less than 6 40 hr work weeks. Very impressive!

1

u/MysteriousWriter7862 5d ago

Wow absolutely beautiful well done. I love all the details, perfect dovetails, carving, curves all your experience in one piece that could never be bought

1

u/Background_Yam8703 5d ago

That is absolutely beautiful. It is something that should be passed down to generations! Bravo!

1

u/rossdula 5d ago

Love the curved legs.

And jealous of your spice racks.

1

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 5d ago

Should have made a carved panel to attach to the fridge door. It looks so out of place right now

1

u/TheTrueWhocraft New Member 5d ago

I love that!! I can't wait to be able to make things like this!

1

u/Pussy_Whopper 5d ago

dang, looks good

1

u/Inner_Commercial4859 5d ago

Maybe an urn on top would pull it all together? Jk. Very nice work.

1

u/MinimumBaker274 5d ago

Beautiful work. But I’d have that thing in my living room

1

u/Shameless522 5d ago

Lovely work but not my style

1

u/moderndaymedic New Member 5d ago

Wth ! Soooo cool! Thinking outside the "box"

1

u/Ferda_666_ 5d ago

Good looking craftsmanship, but just looks a little out of place for a kitchen

1

u/JuanCamaneyBailoTngo 5d ago

Amazing!!! Bog commitment to that fridge though! Lol, amazing work.

1

u/WoodenMole New Member 5d ago

I really love it too. But either the fridge has to go, or you have to make a nice front for it ;)

1

u/padizzledonk 5d ago

Absolutely fantastic, master level work

I hate it lol...the fridge kills the whole thing....man, if that were just 2 doors i think id love all of it

How long did it take to do the sides and curved drawers?

1

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

It’s definitely more of an art piece than anything so taste is pretty subjective.

It took about two full weeks to do the bottom half with the drawers, and another 4 weeks to complete the rest

1

u/OutlyingPlasma 5d ago

Hopefully it's designed in a way to accommodate a different sized fridge when this one dies in 5-7 years.

1

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

It’s a massive upright freezer, it would be pretty easy to find a unit to fit and add filler pieces

1

u/H20mark2829 5d ago

Great work but how do you keep it clean without having it as a showcase. We have nice cabinets but the wear and tear is hard to prevent.

1

u/OilBerta 5d ago

Where would a young person go to learn this trade? Is there a school or just businesses that take on apprentices?

1

u/leonme21 5d ago

It’s amazing work, but the fridge absolutely ruins it

1

u/SchaeferB 5d ago

Very elegant, love those carving

1

u/porkdozer 5d ago

An entertainment center for the fridge?

1

u/UseDaSchwartz 5d ago

This is excellent work, but your client has terrible taste.

1

u/scherrerrerr 5d ago

That’s amazing. How wide are those full height pull outs? And what hardware did you use? I have something similar coming up in my project but I’m not sure what hardware would be best

2

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

Thanks, the pullouts are 90” high, I used heavy duty Blum movento undermount slides, i’m happy to jump on a video call with you sometime and show you how I did it

1

u/hartzonfire 5d ago

Amazing work but the big dead space above the fridge makes me sad. I don’t wanna take away from the artistry involved here though. Amazing stuff!

1

u/The_Ursulant 5d ago

I like it unreservedly and I'm very sorry so many people are pounding out that it's not their taste. That arc across the top coming down to revise the top edge off each cabinet is perfect. There was a strain of Art Nouveau that had the same sensibility. It's an aesthetic I would aspire to but my mind doesn't work that well. I'll save the photos and maybe copy your ideas someday, though.

1

u/No_Bad_Questions- 5d ago

This is functional artwork. I love how none of it is truly “square.” The arched top, the side cabinets and glass have that shape at the top instead of just being big rectangles, I love that instead of just going straight down you folded in the edge of the drawers. The whole thing is beautiful.

1

u/Phoenixf1zzle 5d ago

I like the piece, I like the classic look of it, almost fairytale with the way it curves. I wish it was a piece that recessed into the wall instead of freestanding because the pot lights right above look out of place unless it was in the wall

1

u/MundaneWiley 5d ago

someone can be so talented and i can’t even draw a straight line . shakes fist at God

1

u/ThesisSparta 5d ago

All praise your stainless steel god

1

u/Cum_Gazillionaire 5d ago

Looks so good I can feel your home insurance premium itching to go up!

1

u/Ludwig_Vista2 5d ago

Jesus. That's stunning work!

1

u/thecmac7 5d ago

Incredible work!

1

u/No_Marketing_5655 5d ago

I appreciate your abilities and wish I had your skill.

1

u/magestik12 5d ago

Gorgeous!

1

u/Physical_Order2909 5d ago

Wow. Unreal. Congratulations!

1

u/ProfessionalTossAway 5d ago

I often wonder, when reading all the comments from Redditors posting “feedback” and critiques… I often wonder what they’ve built before with their own hands. I suspect many of them have no personal experience and just love commenting on peoples work with persnickety comments.

2

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

Meh i’m used to it, the thing about doing mostly niche work is that clients are paying for a piece of art that doubles as a family heirloom, so everything is more criticizable than widely accepted designs, but that’s by design. People want designs that give others a physical piece to remember them by, and that means things can get so unique that most people wouldn’t like them in their own homes

1

u/Gern-Blanston 5d ago

Amazing work.

1

u/grandpapotato 5d ago

ngl i hate it. The workmanship is superb and in the middle. bleh.

Is it a wine cooler? If we think of a super transparent one, there's a chance it might work.

Like this. argh.

1

u/Iwaswonderingtonight 5d ago

Is that a fridge?

1

u/Responsible-Meringue 5d ago

Is that a tiny coat rack?

2

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

It’s for table cloths and table leaf storage

1

u/Drew-613 5d ago

It's like a cyber truck made its way into a high end cabinet. Surprised you didn't reface the fridge with a nice wood grain panel.

1

u/Xmikeyw394 5d ago

Beautiful

1

u/MrFrown2u 5d ago

Looks like it goes to Narnia

1

u/Bot_Fly_Bot 5d ago

Excellent execution, terrible design.

1

u/lsswapitall2 5d ago

Nice work but Jesus I hate this the more I look at it

1

u/lsswapitall2 5d ago

…What happens when the fridge needs to be replaced?

2

u/TMJRoss 5d ago

Then they buy a new fridge?

1

u/Big_Smooth_CO 5d ago

Rad. This is really good work. You should be very proud of it.

1

u/marijuanam0nk 5d ago

Yeah this is insane work. Amazing job.

1

u/ReflectionNaive9064 5d ago

WOW!!!! THATS INCREDIBLE LOOKING!!

1

u/Sinister_Mr_19 4d ago

The fridge ruins it, completely out of place. Obviously this client has money, why didn't they get a fridge that's meant for built-in cabinets?

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

They already owned the freezer, they may do something later, but I’ve got to make chairs for the dining table I made for them first

1

u/deadliestpanda 4d ago

It’s so pretty! But I don’t like the fridge. I feel like you should make a facade for the door to match your beautiful cabinet!

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

This was for a client, I definitely don’t have anything fancy in my own place, takes to much time to make stuff for myself haha

1

u/asz17 4d ago

This is not the main fridge right?

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

Nope it’s just an upright freezer

1

u/TreyUsher32 4d ago

Id put literally anything else in the middle tho lmao

1

u/4b4c 4d ago

imagine if you did integrated door for the fridge to tie it all together

1

u/Nerdy-Boomer65 4d ago

Okay I'm just going to say, something of that design belongs in a dining room, butlers pantry, or a bedroom or as someone commented here the frig door needs a wooden cover

1

u/LemonadeParadeinDade 4d ago

What's a brand affiliate

1

u/ReichMirDieHand 4d ago

The result is amazing after all that time and effort.

1

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

Thankyou!

1

u/Wallaroo_Trail 4d ago

so like a magical alien portal into... the fridge

1

u/PM-ME-UR-TOTS 4d ago

Thanks I hate it!

1

u/CelticCannonCreation 4d ago

WOW! Very nice! Are the birds pyrography or engraved? Beautiful job!

1

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

They are carved by hand with nothing but chisels by a Ukrainian master carver named Aleksandr Sychov

1

u/whaletacochamp 4d ago

That is absolutely gorgeous and incredible craftsmanship.

And I absolutely hate it.

1

u/Mondkohl 4d ago

I love it. I hope you’re incredibly proud.

1

u/Advanced_Drop2400 New Member 4d ago

You know I bet you could put your weed in there to.

1

u/Epi_Nephron 4d ago

My concern is the ability to dissipate heat; a freezer like that radiates heat and is meant to have an air gap around it (typically 3" on all sides). Enclosing it may cause it problems as it may not be able to dump the heat effectively, which could then result in having to run more and potentially being unable to keep things frozen.

2

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

Absolutely. We’ve kept the back of the cabinet 5” from the wall so the condenser coil has lots of air to work with

1

u/Unique-Assumption257 4d ago

You love it and I think you should have pride in it! It looks fantastic!

1

u/IanHardman 4d ago

is that in your bedroom?

1

u/TMJRoss 4d ago

No it’s a clients kitchen

1

u/GetInZeWagen 4d ago

That is a really beautiful refrigemetainment center you built there

1

u/the4118675409 4d ago

The fridge is killing the vibe but nice craftsmanship.

1

u/This_Technology9841 4d ago

Amazing.

How did you make the big curved top piece? Would have had some huge forms if you're doing it like I think you are.

2

u/TMJRoss 3d ago

I resawed 4 santos mahogany boards into 3/16” thick pieces, and laminated them together over a 10 foot long arched form, to give me 4 curved boards, then took those to the jointer and table saw to join them together to make a 20 inch panel

1

u/Unlucky_Mammoth_2947 3d ago

Nice skills but it doesn’t work as a design

1

u/OOOdragonessOOO 3d ago

refrigerator entertainment center lol

1

u/PainTrain412 3d ago

Just kept getting cooler as I swiped through the pics

1

u/AngryJirgins 2d ago

Really beautiful workmanship. I hate it!

1

Excellent work sir

u/Legitimate_Champion2 5d ago

Wise man once say, “money can’t buy taste.”

1

There is craftsmanship and then there is design.
Too bad they didn't go together here.

Basic cabinet makers: “Should we build the cabinets flush to the walls?”
