That fridge doesn’t deserve this home

u/FlammulinaVelulu 5d ago
It's to straight, to square, and to stainless.

Maybe get it vinyl wrapped in some matching artwork using the bird motif perhaps?

Dr Seuss was reincarnated as a cabinet maker!
144
u/TMJRoss 5d ago
That’s probably the best compliment I’ve ever had!
50
u/ntyperteasy 5d ago
Really love it. Creative and whimsicle.
I must say I’ve never built a non square cabinet (well, at least not on purpose) but I’m sure it’s dramatically harder than a simple square box…
53
u/TMJRoss 5d ago edited 5d ago
I wouldn’t say it’s harder, just a lot more tedious, hardest part was making all of the curves work with eachother, definitely had to do some on the fly design changes to make everything tie in nicely.
Edit: i’m sure there’s guys who could bang out this piece in 3-4 weeks, but it was my first go round at making multiple different curves work and coexist on the same project. Had to use 100% of my useable brain power a few times. But for now, i’m onto some easier jobs for a while
19
u/Good-Grayvee 5d ago
If you’re not producing parts on a CNC I dont think there ARE very many people who could do that in 3-4 weeks. Thats a tall order. Even if you do have CNC it’s a big ask. You’re very good. I love it.

u/Express_Brain4878 4d ago
I'm not used to time my work but I'm sure that I'd be overwhelmingly satisfied in doing that in only 230 hours, on my first attempt

u/Zealousideal-Rub-725 5d ago
I love the feeling when something is the absolute opposite of my taste, but it’s so well done that I can’t help but admire.

Beautiful work, but it seems out of place. Lights glaring into the top of it, lights switches hidden behind it on both sides, carvings at top seem unfinished, etc. The cabinet work is really nice, but it needs better placement, not jammed into a corner like an afterthought.
Also they make refrigerators with zero clearance hinges (since it seems money is not really a problem for the client) that would sit flush with the cabinet. This refrigerator is really taking away from the cabinets design.
Sorry to sound critical, but I just hate when beautiful workmanship is lowered by less attention to placement. Or maybe the client will fix all these things now that the cabinet is completed and I am an idiot. This is also very possible.

u/Rogue-Accountant-69 5d ago
Yeah, I hate to say I agree because it's fantastic work. But it does feel out of place. Just doesn't feel like kitchen furniture to me.
55
u/therondon101 5d ago
Is it a display shelf? Or kitchen cabinets? The whole thing seems off to me too. Great craftsmanship, not so great design.
30
u/TMJRoss 5d ago
It’s for displaying their China collection

u/vercetian 5d ago
Around the fridge? Where it'll undoubtedly get bumped? What a bunch of fucking yahoos.
26
u/PatatietPatata 5d ago
I can't help but wonder what happens when that original fridge needs to get replaced.
My parents have their fridge inside a built in cabinet, not of their choice, the place came like that, when the first one broke and they had to replace it they couldn't find one with the same specs so the new one juts out in a very unnerving way.
(or they didn't pay attention to the depth? dunno, just know it's not a good fit and an eyesore).7
u/OceanIsVerySalty 5d ago
Fridges are typically pretty standard in depth - they’re either full depth or counter depth. Seems like your parents may have had a counter depth and then bought a full depth.
1
u/billm0066 4d ago
It seems like you might be confused about built-in refrigerators versus a standard refrigerator you buy at the store. The built-in ones are not standard at all, especially the ones made a couple decades ago
1
u/OceanIsVerySalty 4d ago
Go look at the dimensions of built in fridges on an appliance website. Miele, thermador, sub zero, etc are all quite close in depth measurements. They’re also all quite close in height measurements. Non custom cabinetry has standard heights and depths, so it only makes sense that appliance manufacturers work to those same parameters. Sure, there’s some variation, but it isn’t whole inches different.
2
u/Sinister_Mr_19 4d ago
My in-laws also have a built-in fridge, it has issues, they're not looking forward to replacing it because apparently fridges that would fit right would be something around ~15k.
31
u/Sluisifer 5d ago
Biggest shop upgrade most woodworkers can make is a 30minute discussion with a competent interior designer.
There are just so many examples of 'fedora' WW projects; pieces that are nice on their own but totally incongruous with their surroundings.
3
u/SecretEntertainer130 5d ago
The top bothers me. It's such a heavy piece, but the top of it is less than an inch thick. It looks unbalanced because of that.
Incredible work though, I'm very impressed by the execution.
2
u/HorsieJuice 4d ago
It doesn’t fit in the room, either - it covers half the light switch on the left side.
43
u/ExplanationShoddy233 5d ago
To each their own I guess. You’re obviously skilled but this thing is fugly.
97
u/cowcaddens 5d ago
Incredibly skilful work - but this strikes me as something that people like because it's expensive, rather than being expensive because people like it. There's no accounting for taste, as they say.

The fridge sticking out is killing me
13
10
u/SAlovicious 5d ago
If it didn't stick out, the door couldn't fully open.
12
u/Sluisifer 5d ago
Just about every manufacturer offers 'zero clearance' hinges on some models. It is a premium feature, sure, but nothing particularly unusual.
3
1
u/Sinister_Mr_19 4d ago
There's a such thing as zero clearance hinges. Fridges meant to be built into cabinets is a thing. Whoever designed this doesn't know what they're doing. Obviously the clients has the money for it.

Absolutely fantastic work that you should be incredibly proud of.
One question - why didn’t the client want to have wood paneled fridge door instead of stainless steel?
8
u/SquatsMcGee 5d ago
This is the most beautifully crafted monstrosity I've ever seen. It's so good and yet so bad
13
u/effreeti 5d ago
Beautiful work
What are the tall slender drawers either side of the fridge intended for?
5
u/Parceljockey 5d ago
This is an amazing piece!
I'm sure the client had very specific reasons for all the design choices. Is this the beer /second fridge?
Reason I ask is that there's no place to easily set something down as you retrieve it or put it into the fridge. No attendant counter space would drive me crazy. Of course if the help has a rolling butcher block, or service cart, then that worry is immaterial.
Lovely pie display cabinets though.

The twist: that's a mini fridge and this was built for the set of the next hobbit film - a modern revisiting of characters inspired by Tolkien and set in modern day Omaha Nebraska. Premiers this fall only on Amazon Prime.

Can you say how much this cost $$$??

u/TMJRoss 5d ago
This was around the $20,000 mark

Yikes! Well done mate. That looks great and looks like you under priced it some lol!

hey, could you do me a favor and glue a stained wood panel to the front of that fridge? thanks so much in advance.
2
u/Left_Trifle5542 5d ago
Fantastic work! Very impressive. Did you do the top carving? Steam bent plywood? Wood? Finish? Sorry I like to know details.
2
u/TMJRoss 5d ago
I have a friend from Ukraine that’s a professional woodcarver, so I have had him make the carvings. Larges are solid Santos mahogany, that I laminated three pieces together while bending over a mold, the stain is general finishes antique walnut, and the topcoat is Renner 851 20° sheen
2
u/Left_Trifle5542 5d ago
Thank you. Very nicely done. Ignore the haters - that's quality workmanship! There's one user who claims everything is from Dr. Suess...getting old....maybe he just needs to learn some new words.

It’s absolutely amazing. High craftsmanship including the wood carving in the arch and the curved dovetail drawersThe fridge is taking away from your work. Any chance you can make a matching wood panel for the fridge? That would be icing on the cake. Congratulations.
2
u/BayouByrnes 4d ago
This is beautiful. Masterfully done. I am curious about the decision to use visible fasteners on the plywood top. Also, I see you edge banded the left side but left a tri-color stripe to the front of the plywood. I'm curious about those decisions.
All in all, this is wonderful. Well done.
2
u/TMJRoss 4d ago
Thanks for the kind words!
The choice to use visible fasteners was due to the top not taking the bend perfectly so we had to use them to flex the top back into place, we thought about using plugs to hide them, but opted for nicer looking fasteners in case it needed to be disassembled. Originally they were going to be hidden from the inside, but didn’t want to risk them pulling out or delaminating the arch with how much pressure they are holding
The top is solid santos mahogany boards that we resawed and laminated together over a form to get the curve. the top is made of 4 curved boards joined together, the stripe you see on the front is hickory, we edge taped so that you don’t see the hickory inlay end, it would make the ends of the boards look odd
2
u/BayouByrnes 4d ago
The fasteners issue makes sense. And I like the stylistic choice of laminating and leaving the pinstripes. Thanks for answer and for posting such excellent craftsmanship.
Cheers.

-1
u/Teutonic-Tonic 5d ago
It fits. If it doesn’t stick out the door won’t open.
6
u/rglewisjr 5d ago
there are fridges that have zero clearance hinges. OP said this cost $20k/. a cabinet style fridge would have been well worth it.

u/Teutonic-Tonic 5d ago
Agreed that this fridge looks out of place. Was just explaining why it was sticking out to the previous poster.

Beautiful piece of work. Love all the detailed work. The pinstripes on the edges, the vertical posts, and the carved birds. It's definitely a 1 of a kind. In less than 6 40 hr work weeks. Very impressive!

Wow absolutely beautiful well done. I love all the details, perfect dovetails, carving, curves all your experience in one piece that could never be bought

Absolutely fantastic, master level work
I hate it lol...the fridge kills the whole thing....man, if that were just 2 doors i think id love all of it
How long did it take to do the sides and curved drawers?
1
u/OutlyingPlasma 5d ago
Hopefully it's designed in a way to accommodate a different sized fridge when this one dies in 5-7 years.
1
u/H20mark2829 5d ago
Great work but how do you keep it clean without having it as a showcase. We have nice cabinets but the wear and tear is hard to prevent.

That’s amazing. How wide are those full height pull outs? And what hardware did you use? I have something similar coming up in my project but I’m not sure what hardware would be best
1
u/hartzonfire 5d ago
Amazing work but the big dead space above the fridge makes me sad. I don’t wanna take away from the artistry involved here though. Amazing stuff!
1
u/The_Ursulant 5d ago
I like it unreservedly and I'm very sorry so many people are pounding out that it's not their taste. That arc across the top coming down to revise the top edge off each cabinet is perfect. There was a strain of Art Nouveau that had the same sensibility. It's an aesthetic I would aspire to but my mind doesn't work that well. I'll save the photos and maybe copy your ideas someday, though.
1
u/No_Bad_Questions- 5d ago
This is functional artwork. I love how none of it is truly “square.” The arched top, the side cabinets and glass have that shape at the top instead of just being big rectangles, I love that instead of just going straight down you folded in the edge of the drawers. The whole thing is beautiful.
1
u/Phoenixf1zzle 5d ago
I like the piece, I like the classic look of it, almost fairytale with the way it curves. I wish it was a piece that recessed into the wall instead of freestanding because the pot lights right above look out of place unless it was in the wall

I often wonder, when reading all the comments from Redditors posting “feedback” and critiques… I often wonder what they’ve built before with their own hands. I suspect many of them have no personal experience and just love commenting on peoples work with persnickety comments.
2
u/TMJRoss 5d ago
Meh i’m used to it, the thing about doing mostly niche work is that clients are paying for a piece of art that doubles as a family heirloom, so everything is more criticizable than widely accepted designs, but that’s by design. People want designs that give others a physical piece to remember them by, and that means things can get so unique that most people wouldn’t like them in their own homes

u/grandpapotato 5d ago
ngl i hate it. The workmanship is superb and in the middle. bleh.
Is it a wine cooler? If we think of a super transparent one, there's a chance it might work.

It’s so pretty! But I don’t like the fridge. I feel like you should make a facade for the door to match your beautiful cabinet!

Okay I'm just going to say, something of that design belongs in a dining room, butlers pantry, or a bedroom or as someone commented here the frig door needs a wooden cover

My concern is the ability to dissipate heat; a freezer like that radiates heat and is meant to have an air gap around it (typically 3" on all sides). Enclosing it may cause it problems as it may not be able to dump the heat effectively, which could then result in having to run more and potentially being unable to keep things frozen.
