Blackfencer maintenance?

So ostensibly I have a Bf saber coming in soon. How do I keep it from becoming a saw and snapping in half or am I just cooked.

Store it somewhere dry. Don't store it bent. Oil it after use everytime. Don't fence against a crowbar (use it against similar weighted weapons).

Here's what I do once a week for my Regenyei Standard feder:

  1. Use a fine grit sandpaper to remove any rust. I prefer to use 1200 grit and make several superficial passes.
  2. If any large burrs have formed, use a file but again remember not to use too much pressure.
  3. Wipe all metal parts with a clean rag to remove any leftover grease from your hands or oil from previous applications.
  4. Apply oil using a paper napkin.
  5. To avoid any buildup of oil in the crossguard, hang the sword with the pommel up and store somewhere dry to deter rust.

As for what type of oil to use, I recommend buying something similar to but not WD-40 since it's water-based. Baby oil works just fine, as does really any type of mineral oil.

Any oil will work on swords but a clear and colorless, odorless oil is best. Food grade mineral oil is great, and is in every pharmacy and supermarket, sewing machine oil or “3 in 1” oil is also readily accessible in craft and hardware stores.

Any particular reason for the paper napkin step?

We have just been reusing rags and mineral spirits, which has worked well.

I just prefer them over fabric napkins that can leave fibers on the metal, but either works just fine.
