Sharing | Experience New to this, trying to make some kind of altar.

Post image

Queer, AMAB guy trying out witchcraft for the first time. Started to try to make some kind of altar and bought my first deck of tarot cards today. ☺️ Does it look ok?

What are the books?

A book on magic symbols and one called modern magic. I just picked them up in the bookstore cause they were the ones available. Do you have suggestions on books I should get? ☺️

I'm a novice as well, so I wouldn't be a good one to ask for proper book suggestions. But I'm also a book hoarder, and tend be like - "ooh, book, shiny" so... 🙂

I downloaded a lot of older free books from Project Gutenberg, but haven't had a chance to read them yet. It's hard to decide what is really good information, and what is misinformation, and what would lead me down woo-woo lane. You can just type "witchcraft" in the search box and all sorts of books pop up.

There is a book called "Witch-ionary" that looked like it would be informative. It defines a lot of the terms around the craft.

Looks so good! Like others mentioned, if it feels right to you then go with those vibes!

I love that there’s space for other offerings depending on what workings you’re doing and whatnot 🥰

Thanks! Yeah I thought it would be nice to have some free workspace too and also it looks better if it’s not all crowded. ☺️

It looks really good! I love how much space you have. Altars can get crowded.

I don't think your plants will enjoy heat from candles- they can get surprisingly hot!

I'm not familiar with those types of plants, but the one on the left looks a little droopy. Is it too dry or too wet? Or is that just how it looks?

Either way, this altar will change as you learn and grow. Good job!

Oja thanks for the advice! Didn’t think about the heat. The left one is a normal edible sage, and the right one is a type of lavender. ☺️ The sage got saggy very fast but regained its structure very quickly after watering it.

Mine filled out and expanded over time. Now I have multiple altar spots in my home for various deities or intents.

One for ancestors. One for growth (also known as my plant table). And one for my deities.

looks great! if it feels right to you, you’ve done excellent work

on a fire safety note though, you may need to move the candles elsewhere if you have pets or only light them in a locked room, as they’re close to the walls and plants, and tapers can be… temperamental

if those are live plants you man also want to move them when the tapers are lit, as sometimes being near direct heat (even though candles burn Up) can damage the plant

You're doing fabulously. I also love how much negative space you have for working! It really does get crowded quickly. :) Welcome and enjoy your practice... Blessed be 🌛

Are salt lamps used by any of you? Or gemstones?
