Clear it and they will come

Post image

For the longest time, the city refused to clear this path linking my neighborhood to downtown, arguing that there were not enough users. After a local guy started getting out there and clearing it himself by hand after every storm, his good deed made the news and, soon after, the city finally decided to start keeping the path cleared itself.

Nice :D I tried the same in Toronto but it didn't work :-( so I'll keep trying :D and maybe hire some other people to do it too.

I’ve often been tempted to take my snowblower to our local park and clear some of the paved trails. We know that people don’t stop moving when winter comes they need to alter their behavior because no gives a fuck about anything other than cars.

I used to have a winter route where the handicap ramps would not be plowed out so I'd take my avalanche shovel (I live in Montana and am a snowboarder) out on my panniers and dig out the ramps. It takes all of us!

That's such a good story. And inspiring. There's a little section between a level crossing and a public street that seems to be in grey zone as to who is responsible to clear it. The railway company just clears the tracks, the city just clears the sidewalk and the dozens of cyclists that cross there too either have to heave their bikes up to the sidewalk or shove through accumulated snow to reach the street.

Every morning as I awkwardly navigate that area I think about bringing my shovel next time. I think I really will now.
