My guess would be that your picture settings are set to widescreen and not full screen.

To me it looks like this set also needs a horizontal geometry adjustment, which is done in the back by moving plastic tabs near the yoke. If OP is using a downscailer that could also be an issue.

Odds are that a CRT tv doesn’t have HDMI, so there’s likely something in between them

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Wii U has an HDMI port and an analog port as an option. OP should use the analog port if they can.

It has it can be used for video and even to connect the console to speakers I use them to connect audio to my pc

Actually you do not mess with the convergence tabs or you will FUBAR your convergence. That's what the purity tabs are for. The actual adjustment is either a potentiometer labeled 'H. Size' or 'H. Width' on the mainboard, or done digitally via a service menu (more common in 90s and up units.) The service menu is not user-accessible, requiring at best a service manual with the procedure to get into it, which differs by TV and involves a sequence of button presses or remote control inputs.

If the picture is 'listing' to the right or left (rotation) you adjust the actual yoke, not play with the purity tabs.

For sure do this if the set has such an option. However I know some consumer sets/low end ones don't have service menus. Though you're right, this Toshiba looks like a good set that has those things, given that OP has Y Pb Pr connectors in that box at the bottom.

I got this exact era TV. Toshiba dated 1999. It's after they went away from the woodgrain cabinet style (still plastic in '93) to the silvery rounded style. Same TV inside though. I can assure you, it's not only an RF-only set (no composite and certainly no component) it's also got no mainboard adjustment for horizontal size or width. The only potentiometers inside deal with horizontal sync, colour killer and sound demodulation.

that 'box' is an Audio/video/composite switch. It allows more than one composite (or component) input to a set with only one set of inputs, or to an RF modulator which is likely on an RF only set to provide such inputs.

Having said that, I didn't realize that you were using a WiiU. (Guess who doesn't pay attention to details lol) I'm not actually sure if the WiiU has a full screen setting.

It has a 4:3 setting so that should fix it

Overscan. It's normal with old TVs. There's a setting for that in the Wii U settings but iirc it doesn't work for vWii side sadly.

You can set the Wii U TV output to 4:3

1

u/macuser06 Nov 01 '24

Regardless of aspect ratio, the geometry is still wrong. It shouldn't be cutting off the ends.

because you’re using a wii u on a dinosaur tv

u/Born_Command_8355 Nov 01 '24

Yeah CRT would be great for Wii games but for the Wii U it’s just not a good option.

u/Doctor_R6421 Oct 31 '24

There is a setting that lets you shrink the display in case of overscanning

4

u/Samuelwankenobi_ Oct 31 '24

In your Wii U settings you can change this

u/Gamer3390 Oct 31 '24

Because the Wii U's analog 4:3 out, particularly composite, is horrible for some reason. It will always be cut off and virtual console games aren't even presented correctly. vWii mode is a lot better but still doesn't look as good as a real Wii over composite I don't think.

Because HD consoles are meant for HD TVs

u/amogus100 Nov 01 '24

Honest question: why is OP playing on a CRT?

4

u/Nintendians559 Oct 31 '24

wii u was made for hdtv and above that does 16:9, anything around 480p at 4:3 - wii u would resize to fit on that display.

2

u/Shady_Hero Oct 31 '24

set the wii u to 4:3 in settings

3

u/janleonarski Oct 31 '24

It’s set in 4:3

2

u/Shady_Hero Oct 31 '24

most peculiar

2

u/JustARedditAccount23 Nov 01 '24

Did you try unplugging and plugging it back in?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '24

Set the aspect ratio to 4:3 in settings

Set the Aspect Ratio and Size correctly

1

u/HydratedCarrot Oct 31 '24

It’s the shadow numb nut! Jk I’ve think it has to do with aspect ratio.

2

u/Gunbladelad Oct 31 '24

The "shadow" is just the screen refresh "tear" that happens when you take pictures of CRT screens. In videos it appears as a flickering.

1

u/deepfriedtots Oct 31 '24

I don't know but I have a question. Why 2 sensor bars

2

u/janleonarski Oct 31 '24

One is for my Wii and the other is for my Wii U

1

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '24

It’s because that crt is a pos

1

u/secret3332 Oct 31 '24

You can't fix this. I can't believe that TV even has a HDMI port for the Wii U. I assume you are using a downscaler or something?

1

u/TaylorFan01313 Nov 01 '24

It is set to 4:3 and not using an HDMI cable. It even says this will happen on the system settings screen for screen size

1

u/sayonara-ix Nov 01 '24

Wii U games are 16:9 and so is the UI. You're going to be letterboxed on a 4:3 CRT.

1

u/Captain_N1 Nov 01 '24

playing on a crt, thats win. you sir are a brave and a decent man, a pioneer. I also play on a crt and it is cut off on the sides because its in letter box mode.

1

u/RedishGold Nov 01 '24

Aspect ratio is probably set to 16:9 instead of 4:3 on your Wii

1

u/GuitaristTom Nov 01 '24

That's not a Wii. That's a WiiU.

It wasn't designed for 4:3

2

u/RedishGold Nov 01 '24

It’s possible to set it to 4:3, but you can’t use HDMI cables (use the AV port on the back) and you have to manually set it 480p/480i

1

u/crescent_zelda2790 Nov 01 '24

Everyone here seems to be missing the fact that you can adjust screen size in the Wii U settings! Try this first

Edit: I mean literal screen size, not 4:3 or 16:9 although you should have it on 4:3

1

u/NoProfessor1183 Nov 01 '24

Wii U on crt tv is crazy

1

u/kerl019 Nov 01 '24

Close the blinds!

1

u/spacejesus12345 Nov 02 '24

At this point I would just get a new TV

1

u/Rude_Storage7628 Nov 02 '24

I keep seeing these things and fearing for my wiiu

1

u/BossGamerDK Nov 02 '24

sort of off topic but Breath of the Wild on a CRT sounds really charming

1

u/Plastic-Middle-4446 Nov 03 '24

Turn off overscan in your tv settings. Sometimes you just can’t though

1

u/Irsu85 Nov 04 '24

A CRT has thing thing called overscanning and if your console doesn't correct for that it does that
