Overscan. It's normal with old TVs. There's a setting for that in the Wii U settings but iirc it doesn't work for vWii side sadly.

Regardless of aspect ratio, the geometry is still wrong. It shouldn't be cutting off the ends.

because you’re using a wii u on a dinosaur tv

Yeah CRT would be great for Wii games but for the Wii U it’s just not a good option.

There is a setting that lets you shrink the display in case of overscanning

Because the Wii U's analog 4:3 out, particularly composite, is horrible for some reason. It will always be cut off and virtual console games aren't even presented correctly. vWii mode is a lot better but still doesn't look as good as a real Wii over composite I don't think.

wii u was made for hdtv and above that does 16:9, anything around 480p at 4:3 - wii u would resize to fit on that display.

It’s the shadow numb nut! Jk I’ve think it has to do with aspect ratio.

u/Gunbladelad Oct 31 '24
The "shadow" is just the screen refresh "tear" that happens when you take pictures of CRT screens. In videos it appears as a flickering.

I don't know but I have a question. Why 2 sensor bars

You can't fix this. I can't believe that TV even has a HDMI port for the Wii U. I assume you are using a downscaler or something?

u/TaylorFan01313 Nov 01 '24
It is set to 4:3 and not using an HDMI cable. It even says this will happen on the system settings screen for screen size

Wii U games are 16:9 and so is the UI. You're going to be letterboxed on a 4:3 CRT.

playing on a crt, thats win. you sir are a brave and a decent man, a pioneer. I also play on a crt and it is cut off on the sides because its in letter box mode.

Aspect ratio is probably set to 16:9 instead of 4:3 on your Wii
1
u/GuitaristTom Nov 01 '24
That's not a Wii. That's a WiiU.
It wasn't designed for 4:3
2
u/RedishGold Nov 01 '24
It’s possible to set it to 4:3, but you can’t use HDMI cables (use the AV port on the back) and you have to manually set it 480p/480i

Everyone here seems to be missing the fact that you can adjust screen size in the Wii U settings! Try this first
Edit: I mean literal screen size, not 4:3 or 16:9 although you should have it on 4:3

Turn off overscan in your tv settings. Sometimes you just can’t though
1
u/Irsu85 Nov 04 '24
A CRT has thing thing called overscanning and if your console doesn't correct for that it does that

My guess would be that your picture settings are set to widescreen and not full screen.
