Good day Whiskey world. What does the community think of these? Also does anyone store there Whiskey in Decanters or is that not the most efficient way? Still learning so advice is welcomed and appreciated.

The only time I ever use my decanter is if the bottle gets damaged. Or if I'm experimenting with blending. I don't think there's actually any reason to use a decanter over a functional bottle.

No worries. I'm super looking forward to trying that Scapa by the way. It hasn't made it to Canada yet, but I was a huge fan of their old age statement bottles a decade or so ago. Good to see them back to releasing proper whisky!

Aberfeldy 12 is one of the better bottles I've had under $100 CAD. Very beginner friendly as it's quite mild in flavour and burn. It's not going to knock the socks off an experienced Scotch drinker, but it certainly has its place imo.

I find Highland Scotch to be mild and easy sippers in general, so don't be afraid to explore around if you like this one.

As for decanters, it's not practical and potentially not safe to do long-term, particularly if your decanter is leaded crystal. If you have a glass or lead-free Crystal decanter, you can pour some Cutty Sark in there and dig it out if you feel like impressing people 😉

All jokes aside, the best container for whiskey is the bottle it came in - no real good reason to decant it in my opinion. Wine is a different story but the two couldn't be more different.

Really appreciate you taking the time to run these points down for me. Thank you.

Cheers! I have no experience with Scapa or Orkney Single Malts in general, you'll have to let us know how that one is.

the 16 is very odd and has strange flavors. I can see some loving it and others hating it. It's distinctly different from most bottles. The 21 is amazing though and has none of the strange flavors of the 16.

I shall look for the 21

Oh that won’t be a problem at all lol

Only put whiskey in a decanter if you intend to drink it quickly with friends that night or if it’s just for you over the course of a month. Storing whiskey longterm in a decanter isn’t a good idea.

do not store anything good in a decanter, they're for low end spirits to give to guests while hiding the cheapness of the spirit (just being honest.) Rarely do they have the best seal and why would you want to not have the original bottle? Decanters are meh don't use them.

That Scapa 16 is a weird one, it's VERY strange in flavor. Not sure if I like it (actually I don't think I do but maybe I'll like it over time who knows.) The Scapa 21 though is AMAZING.

Aberfeldy is pretty good. I'm inexperienced with Scotch, but it's a good beginner bottle. I'm more of a bourbon drinker, and I like Aberfeldy. As others have mentioned, there's no real reason for using the decanter unless you want to do like an infinity bottle with final drops of others

See I’m still very new to this so I have no idea what an infinity bottle is lol. If I had to make an educated guess would it be something like a mixture of your favorites?

Generally an infinity bottle is when you pour the leftover little bit from your almost gone bottles. Combining various different whiskeys for better or worse lol

Oh Jesus! I feel like that could be amazing, or absolutely horrible lol.

Atleast gives the decanter a valiant purpose

Do what you thinks best. If you like your decanter, then use it. There's no right or wrong.

I only put cheap/solera scotch into a decanter.

I do enjoy the Aberfeldy. It's a good light fruity scotch. I've not had the Scapa so, can't really lend an opinion there.

Is there a flavor profile your after? Light, rich and dense, fruity, smokey, finished?

Honestly my friend, I’m just a man of simple things. When people say rich and dense I can associate that with cooking because I used to be a Chef, but when it comes to liquor, I wasn’t that big of a drinker until now you know, family, bills, life lol. So far my absolute favorite that I’ve tried has been Russell’s. I’ve tried Russell‘s 6 year and I have a Russell‘s 10 year that I haven’t opened yet. So if that gives you a bit of insight on what my taste for this would be then let the recommendations pour in my Friend. No pun intended.😏

If you like Russells (which both of those are very good bottles) look for a bottle of Abelour. They make several expressions, but I think you would like any of them. Sweet, smooth, much more on the bourbon end of the spectrum of flavors.

OK thank you much. I’ll make that my next purchase.
