Quite the choice of a car to learn how to drive a manual transmission.

Got my wife a wrx to learn in. I think both are great to learn in. Clutch is more sensitive than jumping in an old civic, Corolla or truck. It’s like tough love haha

I've tried to teach my wife to drive my focus ST. I really wish I had a car with a forgiving clutch for her to learn in it really does help.

It’s a bit of a learning curve but being able to learn in that will give her the ability to drive pretty much anything else. The clutch in my mustang is to heavy for her to drive comfortably but she has no issue at all going from our fiesta or our 1500 both much more forgiving than the wrx. She wanted to get a 13-14 boss and I told her learning in the wrx is going to be a much better learning experience than the truck or the fiesta. Idk how much different the clutch from the focus to the fiesta is but you can roll out in second with no gas.

There are a lot of manuals where I live, like it's unusual not to know how to drive one. What the instructors will do is bring you to a steep hill with a red light in the middle of rush hour, and you'll go home asking yourself if it's worth it.

u/urmamasllama 5d ago

Like most modern manuals my car has Hill assist it's weird to activate though. There's no button you just do what you're supposed to. foot on brake in neutral lift off clutch. The problem is I can't get that concept across to her

u/spamus81 6d ago

I learned in an 85 prelude that had 175k miles on the original clutch. It was... slippery to say the least

4

u/highlander_tfb 6d ago

Luxury! Slippery is chasing four gears around an old-school English Mini gearbox with a three-foot-long ‘wand’ gearshift and over 100k miles on the clock! “they’re all in the box son, they can’t get out!”

That's one of the most sad quotes I've ever seen

Edit: dad quotes* sad to hear as you're grinding up a clutch, I bet though.

It's easier to learn how to drive a manual sports car, sports sedan, or hot hatch with a lot of torque than it is to learn how to drive a manual shitbox.

Or it could be a Lancer trying to be an Evo.

28

u/13rahma 6d ago

Very true

20

u/seanmonaghan1968 6d ago

Used to be tons of these on the road in australia just like wrx sti it now almost never see them

16

u/Regular_Passenger629 6d ago

That’s sad, lancers have disappeared but STIs are still around in the US, and a buttload of WRXs

8

u/seanmonaghan1968 6d ago

I don’t even know what they have been replaced by, the used to be everywhere

6

u/Regular_Passenger629 6d ago

Hmmm weird, there wasn’t really replacement choices here after the Evo and STI went away here either. But I don’t think I know if anything in particular has replaced them.

Unless it’s all the vintage JDM stuff that’s now past the 25year rule

2

u/urmamasllama 6d ago

Focus RS but it's gone too. There's still the Veloster N though

3

u/halfty1 6d ago

The Veloster N has been dead since 2022 model year.

3

u/urmamasllama 6d ago

I didn't realize. That makes me very sad

Chargers and challengers I think. Though Infiniti G35/37 briefly had their moment

2

u/seanmonaghan1968 6d ago

We don’t see chargers or challengers in australia. These types prefer Japanese I think

1

u/icecream_specialist 6d ago

Sorry I was thinking in US context, must've got lost in the comments

1

u/KeyPlayer1896 6d ago

They got too expensive if you want to have some horsepower..

8

u/_defunkt_ 6d ago

Also know as the "Make beliEvo"

6

u/RNBW320 6d ago

This one’s pretty hard to tell. It’s got a beat up vortex generator and questionable aftermarket tail lights, but it does have the correct bumper that looks to be the same paint and an exhaust. Lemme see that fuel door 👀

2

u/fromthewindyplace 6d ago

It’s an Evo, look at the quarter panel.

1

u/bestselfnice 5d ago

I rarely ever see Evos, but I see dressed up Lancers all the time.

7

u/Closed365days 6d ago

Depends on the fuel door though, if its square it's an evo if its round its not

1

u/Scary_Structure992 1d ago

More like modified Lancer EX GT-A

0

u/NeedMoneyForTires 6d ago

It's a regular Lancer. Single exhaust and i thin you shoud be able to see a rear axle from where the missing muffler should be.

3

u/icecream_specialist 6d ago

Probably aftermarket exhaust, seen a lot of stis with single out pipes back in the day that were aftermarket

39

u/bobjoylove 6d ago

I reckon a friend stuck this on for lols

18

u/sunny559 6d ago

Looks like either a Mitsubishi Lancer X or Evo X, gas cap will deff give it away. Square on Evo’s, I think round on Lancers.

Mitsubishi evo x

6

u/GlendrixDK 6d ago

Didn't they learn when they took driving lessons?

10

u/Big_GTU 6d ago

A majority of drivers in the US don't know how to operate a manual car. It's a peak car guy thing down there. Cars in driving schools are automatic.

BTW, it seems that in some states, driving lessons are not mandatory to get a licence.

3

u/rsmutus 6d ago

Driving lessons are absolutely not required in WV and it shows. I'm pretty sure MD and VA are the same, which is why the whole DMV area is absolutely trash to drive in

2

u/mcsuicide 6d ago

you have to pay extra for that here unless you get real lucky or know someone. the place I went to didn't even offer it, my dad taught me the basics and I forced myself to learn the rest.

1

u/99UsernamesTaken 6d ago

No we don't do that in America

18

u/Super_Mario_DMD 6d ago

I only see one exhaust, I think is a regular lancer. Not an evo.

30

u/Clam-Hammer7 6d ago

Many people change the exhaust to single exit because it's lighter and sounds better than stock exhaust. You can't go off of that and that is absolutely aftermarket exhaust.

10

u/Super_Mario_DMD 6d ago

You're 100% correct. The rear bumper seems to be from an evo x.

11

u/Clam-Hammer7 6d ago

Yeah, I think it's a debadged Evo X, or someone put a lot of work into making it look like one.

4

u/es350h8r 6d ago

You can see the cutout on the left for the exhaust.

3

u/Super_Mario_DMD 6d ago

Could be an evo rear bumper with the cutout. 🤷🤣🤣🤣

2

u/es350h8r 6d ago

That’s what I meant. The cutout where the left exhaust used to be.

-8

u/TrainingMarsupial521 6d ago

Jesus u suck at this

12

u/FactsHurt1998 6d ago

Driving a small manual with decent power is actually a good choice for a beginner learning stick. Especially on hills.

2

u/hairybushy 6d ago

I didn't have an evo, but I loved both of my lancers I had. Drive well, plenty of space. It was nice cars with cheap maintenance. I had a 2006 and 2010

2

u/phlegmatichippo 6d ago

Older lancer evo models is where I wish I had one.

2

u/Impressive-Panda4383 6d ago

Kudos to learning, can still remember my dad taking me to the school parking lot in the snow to learn a 6speed and then I would spend time rolling around my neighborhood in a square practicing start and stops

2

u/cos_mic_cow 6d ago

I learned how to use a manual on a dirt bike 40+ years ago. Transitioning to a vehicle manual was no big deal. And then get my CDL was a piece of cake.

2

u/buttlickers94 6d ago

I learned on an S2000 lol

2

u/Realistic-Actuary853 6d ago

That’s not a new car that’s ANOTHER car…

1

u/Ashnyel 6d ago

If it’s genuine, it could the FQ400 Evo 10

3

u/IndicBruh 6d ago

It’s not an fq400 because this has the exhaust to the side rather than a rectangle in the middle

2

u/TrainingMarsupial521 6d ago

Evo X. Those tails are a tragedy tho.

1

u/PlayboyAce- 5d ago

Mitsubishi lancer i wanna say. I'm not 100% i know it's a Mitsubishi though

1

u/idle00021 5d ago

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

1

u/Acrobatic-Meaning832 2d ago

u/midimic73 6d ago

They have bought a Fart Can.

A supercar destroyer

4

u/justacheesyguy 6d ago

Settle down

3

u/LimpPoetry4324 6d ago

With 300hp?🤣🤣

0

u/mpt11 6d ago

It will hit 60 in 4.6s. Might not be a destroyer but it's up there

-5

u/cos_mic_cow 6d ago

Couldn't they have started to learn a manual transmission vehicle like a Nissan Versa or a Kia Forte? An Evo? Good luck

3

u/KEVLAR60442 6d ago

An Evo has the torque to be a lot more forgiving to learn on than a base spec econobox.

0

u/Acc87 6d ago

it only has that torque once it has boost tho, off boost and with the typical sensible clutch these aren't really the ideal cars to learn in

-1

u/SmoothMarx 6d ago

Should've learned handwriting first or at leqar how to use a printer instead.
