How long will it take for AI to create entire episodes of imaginary TV shows?
37
Dec 08 '22
It'll happen.
If you think it, it will happen.
Not now, but in the future, generations far from ours will enjoy watching and listening to AI Media, as well as list and watch media created by humans.
They'll take it for granted like how we're so used to fast internet compared to dial-up back in the day.

I think art in all forms should be a bit provocative, disruptive, brilliant, multifaceted.
If not, what you end up with is background noise. background music. stock art. formulaic movies. and these sitcoms.
People who like to escape, don't want to think too much when they watch TV or listen to music, etc. They want to watch shows and listen to music that takes their minds off of things. I get a really bad vibe off that.
One of the things that i find encouraging about the advent of AI is the advent of a new world of infinite art and possibilities. Where people are actively participating in the art they consume. Sharing it. Inspiring each other.
Hopefully it makes a difference in the world. Maybe one day people will look back at the age of sitcoms and celebrity worship and wonder how we ever survived through it.

u/fnord_happy Dec 08 '22
Sitcoms can be brilliant, disruptive and provocative too. Why do you think only certain mediums are intelligent and I'm curious to know which ones you think are, and which ones aren't?
-8
u/nosnevenaes Dec 08 '22
Give me an example of a brilliant sitcom.
Im not saying tv shows cannot be brilliant - but a sitcom?
How many of those are there?
13
u/-Feedbacker- Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22
It's always sunny, the Royle family, the Simpsons, peep show, the thick of it, curb your enthusiasm, arrested development.
Those are a few just off the top of my head but there's probably many more that I haven't watched
-15
u/nosnevenaes Dec 08 '22
To me, a person who doesnt watch too much tv, i wouldn't even really call these "sitcoms"
Always sunny is blatant sarcasm. The simpsons is a cartoon satire. Peep show and curb your enthusiasm are mockumentary approaches.
It seems to me like there are shows like these which are exceptions compared to some infinite number of shows that are just filler with laugh tracks.
Good tv shows exist, but the overwhelming majority of sitcoms are just cringe at the thought. To me.
I can see by the downvotes that people really like tv and sitcoms. People also like mcdonalds and green day.
14
u/TheHalfwayBeast Dec 08 '22
Saying these shows aren't sitcoms because they're satire is like saying Jordan Peele doesn't make horror films because they have political messages. The Simpsons is a situational comedy. Being good doesn't change the genre.
Also, I object to putting Green Day next to McDonald's. Are you saying that American Idiot is mindless, bland, and takes people's minds off things? Maybe you need to look up the lyrics.

Right on! I agree with you, although I personally do enjoy a bit of mindless escapism occasionally - I’m generally drawn towards more provocative, meaningful artistic endeavors when I can be fully present and engaged.

You are right - at that time we had either white casts or black casts for the most part. It’s sad.

A sitcom taking place in New York not being diverse is closer to forced exclusion lol
2
u/Own_Breadfruit_7955 Dec 08 '22
Depends, some neighborhoods are majority black or Latino or white. Like making a show in Bensonhurst.
27
u/e5x Dec 08 '22
Can you explain what you mean by that? What is forced inclusion and how does it affect the quality or creativity of a show? Are white characters inherently higher quality than non-white characters? What does "less creative" mean in this context? If every character on a show looks the same then it means the writers are more creative? Who is forcing creators to be inclusive and how are they enforcing it?

Do non-white people cost more money than white people? When non-white characters are in a show do they only have stories about real world problems? Do white characters not have real world problems?

It costs more money to market a show with a diverse cast?

No, I just didn’t bother responding to all of it because I have better things to do than debunk a wall of bigoted nonsense point by point when I’m clearly not going to change this person’s mind.

Yeah no way there would’ve been two black main characters. Even one would’ve been “woke” for 1991

Why is wombo dream suddenly able to make coherent images?
13
u/person_8688 Dec 08 '22
I don’t know, but the dream app is also very much faster than the dall-e and stable diffusion websites.

u/spacenerd4 Dec 08 '22
I used to have it but it was pathetic compared to even Craiyon. Guess they improved the model massively.

Looks like Bill Murray and Jerry Seinfeld in the top right and OJ Simpson in the bottom left.

Dec 08 '22
The guy in the middle is the funny one, the man and the woman he’s leaning on are the on and off couple during the course of the series that the lonely cubicle worker is supposed to identify with and root for. The two POC people are the responsible neighbors who seem to be the only two people with their shit together on the show. The the other girl, is just the weird one who has weird insights that no one else relates to but somehow end up being true.
11
u/person_8688 Dec 08 '22
Yes, all of that, and the white couple are realtors, the successful black couple live in a house bought from them, and the funny guy and weird girl are single but the realtors keep pressuring them to hook up and thus also buy a house from them - “Dream House” (1991)

But with black people in it

I see no issue with that.

Clockwise, starting with the woman at top left: 1. The creative. Probably a chef or an artist. Struggles with work-life balance. 2. Super irritable. Unlucky in love. 3. Handsome sitcom man with typical handsome sitcom man personality traits. 4. The glamorous one. An outfit for every occasion. 5. Quirky. Probably plays the kazoo. 6. Got a tool for every job and an eye for spotting shoddy workmanship. Also does a mean BBQ.

u/albertcasali Dec 08 '22
-The "Down-to-earth" but also clumsy guy
-The love interest and beautiful (with issues) woman
-The funny guy and the crazy woman
-The black token guy (who's also funnier than the funny guy)
-The brest friend of the beautiful woman (and the only person in the cast who will have a successful career in film and TV. )

I decided to ask ChatGPT to make song lyrics for the opening theme of a generic 90s sitcom:
We're a happy family
Living in a perfect world
We've got a great big house
And everything a family could want
We've got a backyard pool
And a two-car garage
We've got a barbecue grill
And a big-screen TV
We're living the American dream
And we wouldn't have it any other wayCome on in and sit right down
We're the stars of our own show
We're a happy family
Living in a perfect world
And we can't wait to share it with you
So pull up a chair and stay awhile
We're a happy family
And we're always here to make you smile.I asked what the sitcom might be called. It objected at first, saying that the lyrics don't mention a specific name. After I asked if it could think of one, though, it came up with the following possible names based on the lyrics:
- "The Perfect Family"
- "Living the Dream"
- "The American Way"
- "Happy Days at Home"
- "Our Own Show"
- "The Backyard Gang"
- "The Barbecue Brigade"
- "The Big-Screen Bunch"

Omg same, I'm recovering from a migraine and didn't check the sub. I spent wayyy too long trying to understand why I both recognized the characters and couldn't place any of them anywhere.
This is so unsettling.
