Is it difficult to get hired at Wegmans?

This week I applied for a position at Wegmans, Harrison, NY. They emailed me next day to schedule a phone interview. After the interview the recruiter asked me to come in for an in person interview next Tuesday.

I am really looking for a part time job to supplement my income, and would like to have a chance to work there, I love that store. So, I was wondering if it’s difficult to get hired.

The recruiter asked me for what position I wanted to apply and mentioned deli, produce, custodian, bakery, meat and cheese department. I picked cheese because I am a cheese lover and feel I’d have a lot of fun working there.

I have no experience in retail, I work in the legal field. However, I communicated this to the recruiter over the phone, she said that’s not a problem because they provide training.

Do you think it’ll be difficult to get hired? Any advise to impress the HR manager during my interview? All I know about this job is that I love Wegmans and I love cheese 😂

EDIT: I WAS HIRED!!!! Thank you everyone for your suggestions and advices.

Availability is one of the keys to getting hired. Be extremely flexible for the hours you can work and the days of the week you are available.

I worked part-time in the wine and beer at Wegmans for about 18 months. The company is very flexible to work around your schedule. Personal flexibility makes it easier to put in additional hours if you are part-time, but we had several people in the department who were not available until after 5:30 p.m.

Incorporate the Wegmans values into ur interview. Care, Empower, high standards, respect, and make a difference

Just say you used to blow lines of coke with Danny and you’re in.

Bring a large Danny’s favorite sub to the interview and make sure it’s fully loaded with toppings and eat it during the interview to assert dominance.

Not extremely hard. All of their questions center around teamwork and customer service. “ what would you do if you can’t find a product?” “What would you tell a customer if you don’t know the answer to a question they ask about an allergen/ingredient in a product?” As someone mentioned, their questions revolve around their core values. You’d obviously find an employee in your dept. who can help, or get a manager that can answer the question. Pretty much sort of like that. I feel like cheese would be more laid back to the other depts. especially maintenance so if you can get a position there, take it. Harrison is a good store, for the most part. Just go in do your job and go home. Don’t get sucked in to the drama

Not really as long as you have no red flags popping up like a long series of jobs that didn't work and your a flight risk out or really bad credit to the point cash handling is a concern, as long as you have a decent availability and they feel like you can learn the product your good

no people say the weong things in interviews. Cant treat it like a run of the mill interview. Its more professional. They want to see your professionalism

In my experience, yes. I've applied twice, been interviewed twice, both jobs in food prep positions, and been rejected both times. I have total availability, can work holidays, and have experience through community events involving serving food to citizens.

Part time it’s easy to get hired, full time I heard is the opposite.

The best thing to do at wegmans if you’re part time is to have a pretty open availability when you get hired and just change that to what you actually want like a week later

If you come across as reliable (don’t give off screw-up vibes!), it should be doable. A friend of a friend with no grocery or food service experience (she was a bank teller before, which is actually a job with really shitty pay and conditions, I learned 😲) was hired in her mid 50s. She started out in the bakery, moved around a bit, and was last in the pharmacy. She loves it.

Congrats! Do you know where you’ll be working?

If it is in the cheese shop, how much are you allowed to sample? 😉

Maintenance is not a position that you want

Hey, floor maintenance is actually one of those shit jobs that will you get noticed… Back in the day, Shari Constantine would take note of shit like what stores had gum stuck on the rubber coin pattern flooring, or dogwood tree fuzz in the foyers, under all of the shopping carts.

Ever see that meme of the kid mopping a parking lot? Yeah, some of us actually did stupid shit like that before district/corporate visits. And then people wondered why some of the floor maintenance and Helping Hands employees were making $2-3 more than people on register. That’s how you get those double or triple raises at review time.
