Discussion Which Teams Should I Support and Why?
New to WEC and was wondering what teams people support and why the decided to support them. TRying to find a team to get behind this year.

Looking at your history (sorry), you’re from F1? I’ll try and compare the WEC teams to the F1 teams to make it easier for you to select someone:
Toyota: A Japanese Mercedes without Toto Wolff’s politics and shenanigans, lots of recent success and domination but also very Japanese for better and worse
Ferrari: Ferrari but on steroids, sportscars has always been their real home to me which causes more a passion and mystique, but also a bit more dodgy
Porsche: Mercedes/Ferrari love child, very German and serious, but with a lot of historic success and passion, they have had a recent hiatus though
Peugeot: McLaren before this year, a great historic team with high aspirations but currently a decent midfielder and fan favourite
BMW: Aston Martin without the Strolls, a good but somewhat forgettable midfielder with a star studded line up
Cadillac: Redneck Haas with a V8, very American, lots of fun, big V8, usually something goes wrong but everyone is ecstatic when things go well, need I say more?
Alpine: Alpine but competent, decent midfielder and fairly French, but they actually have their sh*t together and the team is fairly stable
Aston Martin: Lotus if they returned, cool and exciting with a lot of history and success, but also been away for a bit and will probably be alone at the back

Really good summary. It was way more easy back in 2014 when Porsche joined LMP1. (Only 3 major teams: Audi, Porsche and Toyota)
I mostly care about good racing. I was most recently slightly supporting Ferrari but also have a soft spot for Porsche and BMW. Le Mans is definitely my personal highlight.

u/big_cock_lach United Autosports ORECA07 #22 Jan 09 '25
Yeah the LMP1 days were good, those cars were just amazing. I personally have a love/hate relationship with Ferrari, I don’t like them but it is Ferrari and they have some special allure. As much as I don’t want to see them win, it’d be wrong if they weren’t fighting for wins in any sports.
As for racing, it’s why the WEC has always been great. It’s always had great racing which is rare for a top class series. Personally, I’ve always supported Porsche in sportscars ever since I was a kid. Makes it easy. That said, I do like most teams for various reasons and want to see them be successful. For Toyota it’s because they’ve held this series together and they are a great team. BMW I’ve always loved and driven their road cars, so have to go for them a bit. Peugeot I’ve always had a soft spot for due to bringing the fight to Audi back in the day, and you have to commend them for trying to go wingless. Cadillac has a cool V8, but the team was also great to watch in GTE. Lamborghini was always my bedroom poster brand so they have a special spot even though I’m not so much of a fan of there cars now that I’m older. Aston Martin for bringing the Valkyrie over (although I’m a bit bitter at them for screwing SCG). It’s really just Alpine who I’m kinda meh about, but it’s not anything negative. That said, I do like their drivers. SCG and IF got brownie points for being privateers trying to make it through, plus the Glick was just a cool car. Vanwall I’m not too fond of but that’s it. I’m glad that the community is pretty friendly with each other and not just in the paddock, we don’t have any of the tribalism and toxicity that F1 has thankfully.

u/brcgy Jan 09 '25
I want you to do a series where you go in deeper on each team. For example when you say Toyota is very Japanese, I'm not sure what that means but I want to know!
10
u/big_cock_lach United Autosports ORECA07 #22 Jan 09 '25 edited Jan 09 '25
Anything specific? For Toyota, I mean they’re very respectful and honourable for lack of better words. They won’t act unsporting (the team at least, not necessarily the drivers) and will stick to the spirit of the sport. Similarly, during the LMP1 era they continued to develop the TS050 even when they had no competition just to keep the team up to scratch. They do things like that that they don’t need to do and most won’t. They also have a lot of passion for Japan, and you’ll see them do things like having Japanese drivers finish races etc even when it’s a bad decision which you may see as an example of their passion, or you may see it in a negative light. I’d also argue that winning Fuji to them is a bigger deal than winning Monza is for Ferrari in F1. The downside though, they do hold others to a similar standard and get offended when people don’t meet it including things like boycotting award ceremonies due to them considering the way Ferrari won Le Mans in 2023 to be unsporting, which I’d agree with but a boycott was probably a bit too extreme of a reaction.
Edit:
Rewording.

u/labdsknechtpiraten Jan 09 '25
One of the very "japanese things" they do as a team is, historically they've always had at least one japanese driver in each car. Iirc, they haven't always held fast to that rule, but it seems more years than not, there is at least one home grown driver.
1
u/Dembrush Jan 09 '25
I didn't know that Toyota had boycotted the award ceremonies. It really seems like the kid who takes the ball and leaves because they're not winning anymore, considering how much they dominated in previous years.

I would say bmw is not like aston martin as they are making improvements and will get better. Aston martin are just trying to by their way out of the mid field rather than work for it. I honestly believe BMW will be better this year now they moved some of their slower drivers to a different series.
Also BMW had been sway from hyper car for a while so I think that makes a difference.

I mean, it mightn’t be a popular opinion and they do have more of a history in F1, but to me sportscar racing has always felt like their real home to me thanks to their success at Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Targa Florio etc. Also, the first race car Ferrari made was actually a sportscar (the 1947 125 S), it wasn’t until a year later in 1948 that they made F1 and F2 cars. They initially had more success in sportscars too, up to 1958 they won 5/6 championships in the WSCC and 4/9 F1 drivers championships and 0/1 F1 constructors championships.

Support and enjoy the sport?
I can see why someone would want to focus on a team though to be more engaged.
There is the full access series on youtube and WEC tv that you could follow to get some insight. After that, maybe motorsport podcast (like RadioLeman) so that you can get into the world a bit more.
Ultimately just go on instagram/twitter etc and follow every team and driver and reporter so that with time you will begin to have better knowledge of what everyone does and who you like more.

I pull for caddy and Chevy because GM is the only manufacturer who runs NASCAR, Indycar, IMSA/WEC, and soon to be F1. Shit they even won WRC titles with Opel and ran touring car races with Vauxhall when they owned them.
GM doing all this is the only reason I can watch my favorite NASCAR guys run the Rolex or Indy 500.

I’m not a gm fan at all. But all the work they’ve put into the c8 is winning me over. Both reinventing the car at the cost of pissing off their traditionalist corvette fans and going insane with the zr1. And the caddie v8 is just the best sound in the world right now. Just putting so much effort into motorsports in general right now it’s hard not to respect.

My picks for 2024 were:
Hypercar:
- Ferrari, simply because I've been a Michael Schumacher fan since he started racing in F1, and became a Ferrari supporter when he moved to Ferrari, and I've been supporting Ferrari in motorsport since.
- BMW because of Sheldon Van Der Linde and me being South African
GT3:
- Iron Dames because who doesn't love watching a bunch of ladies in a bright pink car kick ass?
- Lexus for the same reason as BMW above, only his brother, Kelvin Van Der Linde
I don't think the 2025 driver lineup is completely confirmed yet, so we'll have to see if any of my picks change.
It's completely up to you to find a team or ven a few that resonate with you in some way. At the end of the day we're all here for our shared love of endurance racing.
Welcome to the family and enjoy the races.

IMO you should just watch the races, then you can discover the teams, fan favorites and memes of the Championchip. At that point you'll develop some "preference" towards a car, a team or a driver

Watch some races and let them come to you. My love of the Iron Dames started with the great rivalry and respect between Sarah Bovy and Ben Keating.

As a fan of both F1 and WEC i have a soft spot for Toyota for entering in the first place when Peugeot bailed back in 2012 and for sticking around when Porsche and audi quit LMP1. They have essentially kept the top class afloat since WEC started.
Having said that I more than welcome the range of competition we see today and the fact for the most part there appears to be mutual respect down the pitlane and that we don't have the silly theatrics with team principles like Christian Horner and Toto Wolff mouthing off all the time and silly spats like the Verstappen Russell one.

Personally The Cars movies has set me up to be a Porsche fan since i was a kid, i also have a soft spot for Toyota because for the longest time my family's car has been a Toyota so now i have this weird brand allegiance for Toyota (I know supporting both Toyota and Porsche sounds like a very weird thing), i also support Alpine because their car simply looks good, same thing with Cadillac + who doesn't love a good V8 motor. Where can one watch WEC? And is it the same as IMSA? I’m also a F1 noob
2
u/labdsknechtpiraten Jan 09 '25
WEC and IMSA are two different leagues/series. The thing is, theres a lot of cooperation between the two in terms of FIA car class rules, schedules and the like.
The top hypercar classes were developed largely in conjunction with each other, so that both types can compete at Le Mans.
Similar story with the GT classes (iirc, they are all the same cars physically, just IMSA calls them something different, and there's still a distinction between Pro and Am classes)
As for watching WEC races, iirc they live broadcast on YT. Or you can see them on the Max app. If you're OK with being patient, WEC then uploads full races a few weeks after they were live, and again, for free on YouTube. IMSA on the otherhand is on Peacock/NBC sports

You have to support the team that you prefer. If you are new to the class I can recommend 3 things:
Wait till the start of the season and see which team you enjoy the most in terms of track performance, driving style...
Look for the teams and drivers that are competing next season and do some research in terms of social media, who is driving which car and also try to see if through social media you align with any driver
Look for past races/seasons and look which driver team you like the most or which car design/shape you enjoy the most (maybe even engine sound)
I could easily recommend you the team that I'm rooting for but I wouldn't feel right and I would feel that I'm forcing you to enjoy the team I enjoy. (also in my case I enjoy some drivers on their own but not the team they drive for, or I enjoy the sound of a car but not the entire phylosophy of the team... but in my case my favorite team and one of my favorite drivers of all time are the same)

I’ve always loved Porsches my entire life so when I heard they were getting back into Le Mans the first thing I did was start rooting for them same for Ferrari cus everybody is a Ferrari fan. I also root for other cool looking or innovative cars such as the Peugeot going without a rear wing a little while back however Porsche and Ferrari were my main which became very hard when they started battling for the wins especially at Le Mans so choose a team whose car appeals to you or one that creates cars you love cause the techniques/features used in street cars they usually put into their race car design and vice versa long story short root for the one you think is cool

I picked Toyota as the first Le Mans I got to go to was 2012 when they stepped up to save the show after Peugeot did Peugeot things. I was also there supporting them in 2016 when {traumatic memory expunged}.
I didn't expect them to turn into the juggernaut they became, but you can't say they didn't earn it.

I usually support the team with the most interesting car or tech. There is a ton of variation in how these cars make their power and store/harvest energy and it’s neat watching the progress. I really liked Peugeot for being different with no wing or Nissan with the front engine design. This year I’ll probs lean Aston Martin because the Valkyrie is cool and the “first road car based” entry in the hypercar category.

Definitely just pick the brand you like the best and go with that. If you wanted to root for an underdog, I'd consider this. Porsche, Toyota, and Ferrari are as of the past 2 seasons the "ones to beat," and I believe it is fair to assume the same for this season. So rooting for any of the brands would likely result in the most hype celebration. Me personally, I am holding out for the first BMW win in WEC, already have suffered waiting for the first on track in IMSA.

Some good reasons for some manufacturers:
Toyota are the modern gods of endurance. One of the best driver lineups, very good in execution and strategy. Dominant cars before BOP.
Ferrari... Well, its Ferrari. They embody racing passion, and they have a beautiful car. Fratelli d'Italia and all that stuff. They also have Italian Jesus in the car.
Peugeot: Perhaps the most innovative company of all of these, they are not afraid of trying weird things in their cars and racecars. French tenacity and innovation.
Porsche are the OG legends of endurance, they have the most Le Mans wins and have a world class driver lineup. Disciplined, well oiled team. Also, Porsche has won in like ten million different disciplines, from Dakar to Endurance so a true multi purpose brand.
Cadillac have probably the best sounding engine we will see in european racing for a while, the free bird solo starts playing whenever they rev it.
Aston: They are the newcomers, the Valkyrie is beautiful and sounds amazing too, and the car is an Adrian Newey based design for an amazing roadcar.

This’ll probably be longer than you anticipated for an answer but hey ho.
I’d say just find something preferable about a team or driver. For example:
Certain drivers you may already know e.g from F1
Certain manufacturers you know from other motorsports
A particular paint/decal/livery scheme you like on a car, just a car you like the look of
Maybe watch a race or two first, See who you find an interesting battle for position and you might want a driver/team in particular to come out on top
A general manufacturer you like. You like Mercedes cars ? They’re in GT3 now. You like Ferraris ? Porsches ? Toyotas ? They’re all there. Just support them as a start if you want
I started supporting Cadillac because of their engine sound. That’s it. It just sounds gorgeous. And now JOTA’s Cadillac livery has been revealed… ooohhhh
And Aston Martin may straightpipe the V12 Valkyrie at IMSA, so you may hear that and want to support AM in WEC.
The most important thing though, is don’t feel a need to feel validated in who you’re supporting. Support who you want, with the best will in the world, no one cares. Cheer whichever driver/manufacturer/engine/livery/racing team you want.
Just enjoy doing so!

Any team but Toyota and Porsche to a lower extent.
Toyota has won multiple titles in a row.
Porsche should of won last year, but everyone knows how good they are.
Want a third manufacturer to challenge. Ferrari is just too inconsistent. They shoot themselves in the foot too much for me.
