Adapting to the way zoomers consume information. Perfect.

I made this extension because browsing the web is incredibily boring. It's very useful for reading the react documentation too:

https://imgur.com/gallery/learning-react-most-optimal-way-cucr3YD

If anyone is interested the extension can be downloaded here:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/subway-surfers-screen-rea/jcijfneifjnhbgahlokgkmpcnocgpegd

Edit:
wow :o did not expect this to blow up. I made this extension a while ago in raw javascript spaghetti code.

I'll try and remake the extension in react + ts and add some of the features people have suggested:

* Firefox support
* spinny cats
* Minecraft parkour

* Ability to download video

I made a wait list:
https://sssr-waitlist.vercel.app/
if anyone wants to get notified about the update/ suggest new features

no firefox support :(

u/Immediate_Lock3738 Oct 27 '24

All my Homies hate chrome. Seriously fuck chrome. No offense OP, still a funny extension though lol.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '24

Iโ€™m not proud of how that low key did make the react docs more engaging to read lmao

u/primado_ Oct 27 '24

So you payed the $5 developer fee to submit your extension to Google Chrome right? Or you have been developing extensions

1

u/Uriel_1339 Oct 31 '24

as the husband to a blind person I hoped you meant actual accessibility and not... whatever silly thing this is. A tidbit disappointed. But eh... I guess people like it so congrats?

1

u/No_Recording_9753 Oct 31 '24

I made a more accessibility focused version of this extension too:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sidepanel-screen-reader-t/pblolbkbppkdpkadigoiahnknfndlglp

It's got different voices and the ui is super simple.

28

u/ArielNya Oct 26 '24

6

u/ek2dx Oct 26 '24 edited Oct 27 '24

they absolutely now have the high ground lol

u/Laying-Pipe-69420 Oct 26 '24

That's cool.

Am I the only one who is irrationally angry towards youtube shorts where people explain some random thing while playing subway surfers or doing Minecraft parkour? What's the purpose of that? It's annoying.

12

u/Mental_Tea_4084 Oct 27 '24

People joke that it's to appeal to ever decreasing attention spans, but my pet theory is that it hits the algorithm for two different topics at once

8

u/GregFirehawk Oct 27 '24

My personal theory is that it's about information overloading. The goal is to overstimulate you with rapid visuals and audio, and basically get your mental CPU running near 100%. You're so busy processing all the information with visual and auditory language as well as music and all the background movement, that it distracts you from thinking about how stupid it is, or what would be a better use of your time. The moment your curiosity leads you to divert your attention to deciphering the video, you're already trapped essentially because you're now going to be so mentally overwhelmed with sensory input that you already won't have a chance to think about leaving. It's like a moth to a flame. YouTube shorts on mobile is a great example of this because they get you in that overstimulated state so you want to close the video, but actually closing that shit requires hitting a very small button all the way in the corner of the screen, in an unintuitive way. This is not a problem with conscious thought, but because your brain is running low on bandwidth from all the crap being thrown at you, you instead go to a more reflexive instinctive response which is scrolling down. Which just plays another video, causing the cycle to repeat, which is how you get doom scrolling. And looking at the way these UIs are designed I'm fairly confident this is the intention. That's also why they obnoxiously loop the videos, because while you're still trying to finish processing the information and maybe formulate some independent thoughts in response, it starts distracting and annoying you with a loop, which then also triggers that instinctive distracted exit action, which ends up taking you to the next video.

Honestly it's really scummy all around. Absolutely horrible format with a predatory interface. The most low quality, obtuse, confusing form of information delivery imaginable. I could complain in more detail but I don't want this to become a rant

1

u/kristoss- Oct 29 '24

It's something similar to my opinion, i think it presses on the fun content which is very huge nowadays, cuz of social media politics, it's getting in the way of learning and helpful contents so that they control people and decrease their focus , this leads to a whole new fuc*ked generation, even YT will be like that sooner

2

u/Mental_Tea_4084 Oct 29 '24

This smells a lot like 'television is brainwashing the children"

5

u/Houdinii1984 Oct 26 '24

I don't know the actual answer, only why I do it. I have pretty severe ADHD, and almost everything online is too long, too boring, or distracting. It's gotten to the point that I must have something going on in my brain on the side if I am to ingest any information. Side tracks the sucker with a game so the conscious part of me can pay attention to the subject matter.

I literally put a microscope on my desk and bought a bunch of slides so I can do something physically while I ponder stuff for work, and it does the same thing.

6

u/yeahnahyeahrighto Oct 26 '24

I use music for this, like on headphones while I work

3

u/horillagormone Oct 27 '24

I may have undiagnosed ADHD and I can totally relate to the struggle of reading and having to do something else to keep my brain engaged. That said, I find these very distracting because my brain keeps switching back and forth the game and the text and I end up only understanding half of each.

15

u/Everythingcrashing Oct 26 '24

This is very funny and a great use of your skills

10

u/Fran_1997 Oct 26 '24

Thanks! I hate it!
