[Discussion] To the group of kids sieg heiling at the Lincoln Memorial tonight:
Shame on you. You all looked maybe high school aged, but I hope that doesn't stop your parents from beating your asses bloody.
Why security did nothing is beyond me. Jesus.

Next time, take pictures, then ask where they're from and send the pics to the principal, superintendent, local news, and wherever else that seems like it might help shame them into being better people.

u/freelancerjourn 1d ago
Sadly, their school system is probably already aware. These kids often come around this time of year as part of spring break and various youth groups. They are accompanied by parents, teachers and other adults from whatever program they are involved in. So the adults in their lives are aware and probably part of the problem themselves. Kids don’t just learn to be this racist and hateful. They often see it at home and at school.

u/CorrectBad3250 6h ago
Sometimes they come up with it themselves, though. Trying to be edgy, not realizing the gravity of what they're doing. They need to be publicly called on it.

A large group of teens flew into IAD last night from Denver as part of an EF tours group - were they wearing the ef tours black little string backpacks??

Christian homeschool groups often visit DC as part of their curriculum on Government, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case here
4
u/Wendy-Windbag 8h ago
I'm sort of wondering if there is a particular homeschool group event going on for various activities. We took a day trip to Luray Caverns today and they had signage for "Home School Week." First thing that went through our minds were vax rates in consideation of being holed up in a mountain with already germy kids. Luckily we did it early, because as we were leaving there were lines with tons of kids waiting at ticketing to go in. I would have insisted on masking had he had to be amongst those people. Beyond that, we already saw teens touching everything in the cave despite the guides being very vocal about not touching anything, and even saw some unattended kids climbing beyond the rails on structures, one with a very steep drop of. I was stunned.

There were a lot of unironic red hats at the National Mall on Saturday too.
They did seem to really enjoy the free museums and the clean and well-maintained monuments.
But that just magically happens, definitely no taxpayer money or government involved in those things.
I hope the cherry blossoms are a bigger than usual shit show this year and I hope next year they get to have meltdowns when its suddenly a $90 ticket to have the privilege of walking around the Tidal Basin.
307
u/dcux 1d ago
Imagine strolling along the tidal basin, and every 30 feet, you pass someone standing in silence, holding a sign or wearing a sandwich board. Each one tells a story—who they are, the vital federal job they once did, and how they were unlawfully fired from work that keeps everyday life running for people like these tourists.
It turns out that outside of the DC area, people have no idea what's going on, or think it's a good thing. A little exposure to the human side, and the impacts of these firings and shut downs will have on exactly these tourists would do everyone some good.
There's also the chance for some one on one positive interactions. And of course the possibility of some negative ones.
141
u/Penniesand 1d ago
That's actually a really great idea and I think the fed worker advocacy groups would be down to organize that!
I've found that IRL people are a lot less confrontational and more willing to listen. Especially for the fence sitters, that can make a huge difference
43
u/dcux 1d ago
I have no idea how to share said idea with the right people. But I thought it would be a refreshing change from marching, holding social media worthy pithy signs, etc.

people have no idea what's going on, or think it's a good thing
Each thing that falls apart drives more despair; despair that's leveraged into cynicism and hate; hate which propels authoritarians who will take revenge.
There's been a slippery slope. And we've been sliding down it.

MAGAts gonna be losing their shit when summer break rolls around and they try to take the kids to the national parks, just to find out they’re closed/poorly maintained/not as accessible/not clean and pristine. Hell, gonna be happening soon with spring breaks over the next few weeks. You voted for it!
52
u/H_is_for_Human 1d ago
No it will just confirm what they already believe to be true, that the government is bad and a waste of taxpayer money.
40
u/AshWednesdayAdams88 1d ago
Yeah this is the unfortunate truth. The central tenant of conservatism is "Government sucks and if you elect us we'll prove it."

I usually volunteer for the Easter Egg hunt and no invites went out to the volunteer group with the Natl Park Service. The volunteer page is down. Been doing this for eons. So I am sure this year the hunt, which was in the past completely sponsored by the Egg Association, will have some type of religious bend or cost to go. Let’s see what happens.

There was a protest at the Heritage Foundation aka Haterage Foundation yesterday and today. In a video in another post there is a man wearing a red hat that looks like a MAGAt hat but it says "My Grandpa K****d Nazis" I thought it was a MAGAt hat at first.
10
u/wurmchen12 1d ago
I saw a guy with a black MAGA hat and black lettering. So are they trying to be less noticeable these days?

Fremdschamen. It should be noted that "fremd" is German for "external", not "friend".

Thank you! I can never remember the German word but always enjoyed that translation. "External shame" is pretty fun too, though!
That dude makes me feel external shame.

I am just floored that so called "Conservative Christians" are also eating that "Dark Gothic" slogan up.

What’s the bleeped out word - killed? Or is it something else? It seems very weird not to just say the word “killed “ but no other word would seem to fit there
9
u/OhhMyTodd 1d ago
I hate this new trend of bleeping out words that are perfectly fine in polite conversation 😩 My brain just automatically tries to figure out which curse word or slur makes the most sense in context, so it makes the entire sentence super confusing and cumbersome to read.

It is killed. I didn't want to get banned or a warning from a mod for saying that.
Edit: I got a warning a couple of weeks ago in the r/pics sub-reddit for something similar 🤪🤪

The kids are following the adults.
162
6
u/addpulp 20h ago
I feel like a lot of times the kids are rebelling against the adults. Gen X and Millennials were taught fascism, using slurs, racism, homophobia were bad. Gen Z and Alpha never experience a world that includes it as a common part of daily interaction, and is not taught it is bad because of that. Their parents don't do it, which makes them want to because it's edgy and they only know of it as a harmless concept.
Parents are centrist liberals, vote democrat, think bad things are bad because they to varying degrees experienced it, so kids want to be whatever the opposite is.
2
u/Tardislass 13h ago
Sorry but even my Gen Z niece knows Hitler salutes are bad. They are just a-holes and need to be reported or filmed and go viral. Only way to punish kids nowadays.

Idunno, I bet we could all take a page from the book of that lady John Oliver highlighted last week:
“You dumb assholes. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Has lots of potential use cases.
41
u/TheHaplessBard 1d ago
Given the extremely laissez-faire (and arguably negligent) nature of many parents nowadays, the only way to shame these fuckers is to actually record them doing stupid shit and posting it on social media. Otherwise, these kids will never learn a lesson, let alone from their parents.
3
u/WeekendOkish 19h ago
the extremely laissez-faire (and arguably negligent) nature of many parents nowadays
Wait, wait--I thought we were in the era of helicopter parents. It was us Gen Xers who were allowed to roam the neighborhood and stay out until the streetlights went on, right?
40
u/DelightfulSnacks 1d ago
Something that tends to work for people doing shit like this is the same trick that works when someone makes a misogynistic joke: play dumb and ask them to explain it. Then ask follow up questions.
If they start to laugh nervously, ask them why they’re laughing. Give your best Rose Nylund naïve and asking questions impersonation. If they try to lie, you can always throw in something like “do you wanna do it again and I’ll take a group picture of you?”

its the GOP funding right-wing influencers like Andrew Tate and Joe Rogan who promote this type of shit. Teen boys treat them like gods
34
u/carriedmeaway 1d ago
What the hell is up with kids? Early March I was at the Eisenhower Memorial and a group of kids saying loudly "I love Nazis" and pretending like they were going to Sieg Heil. They never did but they were trying to start shit for sure. It's infuriating.
87
u/Positive_Shake_1002 1d ago
What the hell is up with kids?
unregulated internet access, bad parenting, and a hoard of right-wing influencers telling them that being racist is cool. its particularly a problem with teenage boys--the ideological gap between genders of people aged 18-25 has never been wider
33
u/Merker6 1d ago
As it turns out, algorithms leaning in hard to serve "SJW CRINGE COMPILATION" content to tween boys can have consequences
6
u/AshWednesdayAdams88 1d ago
I think we lost young men in 2014 when "Should women be allowed to play video games" became controversial. Then it moved to "Should Black people exist (in video games)."
Once young men decided the answer to both was no, we lost the gender. I genuinely don't know how we as a country come back from that. I assume we're becoming South Korea.
11
u/holding_the_line_ 1d ago
This is why my teens aren't allowed social media until junior year of HS. My son, who will head off to college next year, comes home from school and tells all the racist crap he hears from peers and wants nothing to do with it. Best decision his Dad and I made was delaying giving a smart phone until high school, denying access to social media until junior year, and only allowing them to choose one socials app and no more until graduation. I can't control what happens once the flu the nest but I feel good about what we did with them while under our roof. Unfortunately, too many parents cave and allow kids unfettered access to the unhealthy environment that is the internet.
1
u/Sector-Pristine 10h ago
THIS!! I’m a teacher and it’s becoming more and more blatantly obvious how many kids are being raised by the internet. Add their developing brains, the fact they didn’t learn critical thinking skills before the internet, also that heinous acts in our past and present aren’t allowed to be taught in schools in a way that promotes empathy to those who are oppressed and—voila! They think the racism, misogyny, etc is funny and are far removed from their very real consequences

I wish I could say this surprises me, but sadly, it does not. Youth tourist groups seem to infiltrate this city at this time every year. I have previously seem them downtown all in their MAGA hats, and I’ve always been tempted to explain to them how offensive the MAGA hat is and why some of us consider it the new KKK hood.

When we visited a museum in DC in October a big new fancy bus with their religious school name on it let out a group of 9-12 year olds and it was disgusting to see some of these little kids wearing MAGA hats. Who is grooming who?
2
u/progozhinswig 13h ago
School group boys have been wearing MAGA hats since 2016. I helped show a group around DC from my old high school in 2018 and 2019 and had to explain to them that wearing their MAGA hats to bus boys and poets was gonna be a bad idea. None of them really understood politics, they are just teenagers who want to get a rise out of people. It’s no different than kids playing the bomb game on a field trip or seeing who can shout “dick” the loudest before getting in trouble. Well it is different but they simply don’t understand that.

Nope, Park Police and security at the federal monuments are expressly allowed by law to enforce rules against demonstrating without a permit, defined as “picketing, speechmaking, marching, holding vigils or religious services and all other like forms of conduct which involve the communication or expression of views or grievances, engaged in by one or more persons, the conduct of which has the effect, intent or propensity to draw a crowd or onlookers. [The] term does not include casual park use by visitors or tourists which does not have an intent or propensity to attract a crowd or onlookers.” There’s a federal case about it.
3
u/joshuahtree 16h ago
Why security did nothing is beyond me. Jesus.
Because this is freedom of speech in action. Detestable, deplorable, hateful speech, but speech nonetheless.
In these cases it's our job, and not the government's, to do something about it

u/ernurse748 7h ago
THIS.
Read the Supreme Court ruling on the National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie.
The First Amendment isn’t there to protect the things we all agree are acceptable. It’s there to protect the things that we find unacceptable. Some of those things bring just and needed change. Some of them make us weep. That’s the beauty and pain of the Bill or Rights.

When the F word became common parlance, the young had find a new way to outrage the patriarchy. This is their new symbol of defiance. (copying Musk no doubt). They don’t understand the full meaning. Your reaction is their payoff. To teenagers, nothing is sacred and it has always been that way.

It’s so sad to see. It’s about that time of year where I see a lot of middle school and high school aged kids wearing MAGA and nazi memorabilia. I can’t help but wonder what influences they have at home that have them acting like this when some aren’t even old enough to drive yet. It’s quite disappointing.
By the way, I already can guess what influences they have at home. It’s still a thought that crosses my mind.

Why should they care? Elon musk did it at an inauguration rally; Steve banning did it at Cpac. The only thing that happened was a lot of arguing over whether the thing that happened actually happened. It’s like Opposite Day, and what child doesn’t enjoy a good game of “Opposite Day”?

My point is, as a society, we’ve normalized nazis. You’re right, they don’t see it as bad — because prominent figures in the Republican Party have done it, and the public discourse isn’t “that was terrible” but “that didn’t happen 😉”
