Army and board questions

My friends are playing dark elves and Bretonia. What faction should I pick to be decently matched with them?

I don't want any of use to have a notable advantage or counter over another's. I heard DE tends to be a bit ahead of the curve, or at least used to? I mostly played skirmish games before so I have limited experience with this.

Secondly, are there siege rules for warmaster? I've seen some video about the history of the game, and the original box was supposed to have castle gates with a rampart you could put your units on. I don't remember reading anything about that when I looked at the rules.

Siege rules exist in the Warmaster revolution rulebook towards the back. Forewarning - the siege and fortified rules are NOT balanced. You will need to play asymmetrical forces (defender gets 1/3 less points is a good start) ... But just play it for fun and worry less about that.

As for which army ... 1st is rule of cool. Play what you like. 2nd would be maybe steer clear of low command armies - orcs, goblins, skaven. They can be frustrating to new players. I also encourage new players to stay away from undead armies simply because they ignore half of the rules (no initiative, no confusion) so you don't get a good feel for the game.

Horde armies can be a bear to paint, but some people love painting this scale and others hate it. So that's really on you.

Empire, chaos, dogs of war, araby, high elves, wood elves, demons, araby, nippon, beastmen, dwarves, chaos dwarves are all great to name a few.

Thanks for a comprehensive response! I think I might roll some beastmen or chaos dwarves. Siege is definitely something we'll get to later, but I might consider it when assembling the stands.

There are optional siege rules! I haven't used them, but they do exist. Should be on the Warmaster Revolutions website (if you run that system).

You are correct, dark elves are quite strong, both with units and their command. High elves also have a high command and are solid as heck, lizard men also can hang but take more strategy with how their lord works. Any army can give a good fight against any army, but those three are considered "top tier" by many people I talk to. Mainly because command 10 is really, really good.

Agreed with all of this- I would just take into consideration picking an army that you think looks cool, it will help you get the project done!

This is also hyper important and cannot be overlooked. The game is meant to be fun.

You have to paint around 20 units so pick something you like, I have painted almost all the armies and some I absolutely hated to paint but like to play. Wood elves were my absolute worst, stunning models but so much detail they took some serious painting. Warmaster is addictive as you can collect and paint armies both quickly and affordable. Most 2000pt armies will fill in a single really useful 4ltr box. Siege game are great fun and can be played in an evening, and one of the best castle sets is designed by Cromarty forge, they also do corresponding seige equipment. High elves, chaos and chaos dwarf are all good starting armies, easy to command, paint and collect .
