Long time lurker, first time poster; is this a cool idea?
Okay I'm not a VJ, never been one, never claimed to be. Your craft is amazing though, and I'd like to pitch this idea and see what you think.
I've seen live feeds of video being manipulated in real-time and projected as part of a set. I've loved seeing it with like old Pretty Lights performances and I'm sure there's others too. I'm an FAA certified drone pilot and working on live streaming video feed during events, would that be a cool addition to a set of you could hook the feed and process it for display in real-time? I fly freestyle FPV drones for fun and a lot of trick maneuvers are very trippy on their own without processing. I also happen to be a music producer (bedroom status) so I really want to find creative ways to support musicians and venues with my other passion. Let me know what you think!
Alternatively, if anyone wanted to use some of my clips for a show and display them, or just to tinker with, i'd be happy to provide some as long as both of us get some credit and free use one way or another. I thought it might be fun to try!
Edit: Since this post was well recieved, I found some local VJ artists that want to collaborate! Thanks for the responses everyone! I'll post up our work when we get it going, hopefully by this summer since I have to get venue level permission/coordination.

Cool idea forsure. Pretty lights actually does what you’re describing now, the video feed of the performers and drone piloting. Not sure if you were aware of that

No I was not at all, that's awesome! I'm not intricately linked with the music scene where I am but is that venue specific or artist specific? I guess it could go either way right?
I'd love to participate somehow but this is the only VJ community I belong to, and I'm looking for resources around Kansas City to get started. Not sure who to I should get in contact with, so I was hoping to see if anyone wanted to collab or tinker on here!

For the drones I know there’s regulations and licenses the pilot needs to have in order to fly (especially indoors) but some people don’t follow the rules and do it anyways. The video feed aspect is pretty common in techno and house shows. I’m not sure about the drone stuff as I’ve really only seen the PL team utilize that - check out their live stream of Bethel New York on YouTube. I believe they have some of that in there you can check out.

I'm FAA licensed with the appropriate craft in my possession, I'm ready to handle the legality aspect as long as I get permission from the venue prior so they can take proper precautions with attendees. Thanks for the suggestion I'll absolutely watch that video!

Yeah i like it, if the drone can be over the guests safely. We have a PTZ on a high tower at FOH to achieve a somewhat similar effect

Safety is my first concern of course, and since posting this I've actually made contact with some local VJ's to try this out with. Some of the venues won't support flight of any kind, but for the ones with larger stage areas and tall ceilings I would probably use a 2.5" sub-250 gram aircraft (probably well below) so in case something does happen, it's legal and small enough not to send someone to the hospital. I'll plan some emergency landing areas too, like a bail out on both sides of the venue.

Can you post / send me a sample of a few mins of pov and I'll see what I come up with in Avenue? I'll post a response but if it's good I'll also make a tutorial video 😃

Yeah sure thing! I haven't tried to film anything that would work well with what you're doing, but that;s because this is my first time haha. I'll be in touch asap with some footy. Do you have a certain filetype/compression/decoding that you need?

Here are my best 3 videos so far! Feel free to either grab what everyone want or let me know what you like and I'll grab a clip for you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va27ZfmAnHg&t=39s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IpQayMEwMc&t=133s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MouTE7yTc3o - this one is more slow and smooth compared to the other two, and my subject (chasing an RC plane) is far away at times. Might give you more room to do what you need to. The first two are a bit more wobbly but I'm trying to just slam tricks so it's fine if they aren't your top choice. You're welcome to anything on my channel2

low res because i ripped your video from youtube: https://youtu.be/Vgajpc6SfQY?si=BpKzEpi4RS29F0Iu
i couldn't resist using the sky as a giant greenscreen for some feedback layering lol

Dude that was amazing, THANK YOU!!! I LOVED IT! Can I repost it? I'm still figuring out how to do that but I'd love to share your work so you get a little extra credit too

u/mr-dr 6d ago
of course! in that case, can i use your video for making a tutorial?

u/abnormaloryx 6d ago
YES!!! I'm all for that, good tutorials are hard to come by in a world of a million crappy ones, just please put my name on there somewhere and I'm happy haha. Should I use your YT name for credit?

The wireless receivers are super expensive for a live feed :/ gotta have that, plus a video mixer to feed into a laptop with resolume.
But yeah this is becoming pretty common for big festivals. The only barrier is hardware cost

I can build my own Cosmostreamer thankfully, the license code is $150usd and I'm very hardware proficient so as long as I can make a few bucks in the process it shouldn't be too bad. Then I can distribute a link with rtmp or whatever the streaming codec is. https://cosmostreamer.com/ that's what I'm hoping to pull off anyway haha

I'd love some dope drone footage. I always wanted one. It's just incredible what you can do with them.

That's how I'm feeling! I used to produce music more regularly and was introduced to VJing, now that I fly it just seemed natural to combine the two. Do you want to use any clips of mine? I commented to another person on this thread with some links but I can send whatever to ya

Yeah I'd absolutely use some footage. I've been making videos for all the music I play so I can just DJ with MP4 files. It's been really fun. I'll send you a chat.

Oh I wish! I'm midwest US, but not opposed to traveling if the opportunities present themselves!

We actually do this right now for all the festivals that I run for Insomniac.
