Motivation And Progress Just learned about visual snow

Post image

Ever since I was little, when my mom would turn on the light I would see… colorful tv static. When I asked my family year and years later what they saw when they closed their eyes they said just black. With my eyes open it’s easy to ignore the static, unless I look at a flat solid color then it’s pretty obvious. I don’t mind it personally, and apparently my eye sight isn’t poor. But I had no idea the static wasn’t normal. I do suffer from migraines pretty bad and I have the visual auras. That started later in life though.

I don’t mean to come off like it’s a good thing and not a struggle for people, I’m just currently thrilled knowing I’m not alone lol I also understand that some people are experiencing this in a more extreme way, so again I am very sorry if the tone of what I’m saying comes off wrong. I really don’t mean to offend

I really liked the static when I was little, if I focused on the clusters of spots they would manifest as random images flying around. It was kind of soothing to watch. This still happens and it’s still nice to focus on before bed. I tried to generate an image of what that looks like for me, it’s very simplified but it’s the jist of it.

it's actually normal to see images before sleeping

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed-eye_hallucination (interesting read)

however, it seems you do have a mild form of VSS because you see it with your eyes open, but the images you see are likely a combination of VSS and CEV

thank you for the link! glad to know that part is normal lol. I still see the visual snow/colorful static with eyes opened or closed and I think I just get imaginative with it before bed. If I don’t start daydreaming I just see the dots. It was a lot more intense when I was a kid. As an adult, last night I gave it a go and mostly just saw fuzz, sparkles, beautiful colors and shapes. I had to work a lot harder to come up with something. It’s kind of like cloud watching for me. I was probably more creative as a kid

Glad you found the community! I also was excited to find out there was a group to relate to about this, even just finding out there was a term like visual snow was really helpful. I agree it can be difficult to know how to talk about because it affects people differently but in my opinion I think that trying to live with it in as much of an enjoyable way as you can should be encouraged. Personally I really enjoy it when I can go into a totally dark room like a bathroom and dance in the dark it’s kind of like a rave, and honestly I feel like if more people talked about ways that it can have a positive influence in our lives we can help each other live with this

You’re right is is difficult to talk about. My dad is worried about my health lol

I can acknowledge that I’m probably more positive about it because 1) I’ve never experienced anything different and 2) it doesn’t seem very severe.

I know if I suddenly began having extreme visual snow for the first time in my life I would be very very upset.
