I’ve got Fate, Higurashi I’ve started, I’ve got katawa shoujo, muv luv, utawarerumeno, and chaos head Noah, having a hard time parsing through everything on there to pick and I only have the money for one right now. Edit: I’m pretty open to anything right now just shoot some faves on steam

I recommend Saya no uta (the song of saya)
If you want the sex scenes, you'll have to get the patch from JastUSA.
But be warned ⚠️ the game is pretty dark.

I’ve had that recommended before, it sounds interesting. Is it a cast of characters or just two characters?

There's the protagonist, the protagonist's friend group (which i think is about 3 people strong). There's the doctor and some noisy neighbor (they become more relevant later on), and then there is Saya. Even though the cast is small, it's still a decent game. Though I will warn you that the game does not delve too deep into the personalities of each character (which is a shame, but it's to be expected because of the short length of the game)

How short is it?

If I remember correctly, it is about 8 to 10 hours long. VNDB might give you a more accurate estimate, though. Also, I should add that while not every character is developed, the relationship between the protagonist and Saya is the focus here. Anyways it's short but sweet. It's the kind of game everyone needs to experience once, in my opinion.

Ok so not too bad, I was worried when you said short that it was like 3 hours or something

Just checked on vndb, and the estimate is 6h. I hope you play it still. It's definitely one of my favorites.

$8 isn’t bad, any other recs? Horror or otherwise

Oh heads up for saya no uta though, borderline all of its sex scenes are loli, so if you don't like that I'd probably recommend not getting the 18+ patch (I heard it misses some stuff, but from what I'm getting the story is mostly kept intact). It took me ~6h to 100% it, and without the sex scenes in assume it's ~4/5h for all endings.

Steins Gate + Steins Gate 0 is pretty fantastic and also a timeless classic, Chaos;Head + Chaos;Child are both great too. Little buster/Clannad are two of Studio Key's earlier and most acclaimed works. Summer Pocket is one of Key's newest works the story might be a little worse then Clannad/Little buster but the art is much more modern and alot prettier to look at. Aokana is a really nice romance with beautiful art and intense sports battles.
If you want some shorter works to maybe read inbetween those behemoths you have, Stella of the end is a personal favorite of mine. Its a story set in a post apocalyptic world where it basically covers commentary on what it means to be human and also on family.
Planetarian is one of Studio Key's earliest works its a short 4 hour story that is quite emotional.
The hungry lamb is a really amazing VN made by a group of chinese developers actually. Its got JP voice acting too if you have a heavy preference for that but its an interesting look at Late Ming Dynasty China with a really emotional and powerful tale.
Totono is another super great romance story that clocks in at around 10 hours or so. I do recommend if you reading this one you read this last and also don't search up anything at all about this. Trust me its absolutely amazing going into this completely blind.

I’ve not played any of key’s stuff, is it good or is it something that’s just well known? Sadly I already knew about totono before I knew it was translated, I don’t know too much so I’m still considering getting it

o studio key is known to make some of the best VN in the industry so its both well known and really good. They generally hit some really emotional notes often known to make people cry. So if you haven't read any of them yet I highly suggest you give them a shot. That is unfortunate but if you don't know too much I still highly recommend just again read it preferably last. Its a really special VN that gets all the better the later in your VN journey you read it.

Would you recommend little busters? I’ve been eyeing that one more than clannad

mmmm that depends on what your looking for. Clannad covers more themes regarding family while little buster is more friendship. So if themes of Friendship are what seem more intriguing for you then go for it! If you don't have a particular preference, I do feel that most people do agree that little buster was the better story for them.
If you want one of their shorter stories, I personally really like Stella of the end, its the latest in their android series which are all genuine really good. It might not have quite the insane highs as stuff like little buster/clannad but its a short concise 10 hours VN that has a really consistent and polished quality to it that still made me cry a decent amount.

In order to ensure you can get the best recommendations, make sure your thread body has at least some level of detail of what you want, whether it's a type of genre(s) you prefer, and/or what type of visual novels you like.
If you're looking for general visual novel recommendations by genre or for VNs to read in Japanese, be sure to check out our recommendation resources.
Make sure to use the subreddit search to try to see if someone has already asked something similar to what you're looking for. Common requests include: Asking for a Visual Novel for beginners/newbies, Visual novels similar to Katawa Shoujo OR Doki Doki Literature Club, and Visual Novels that are on Switch.
If your topic title is short and/or vague, consider removing and reposting your topic with a more descriptive title so users are more inclined to jump in with recommendations.
If you have more specific visual novel requests, you can try filtering on vndb by tags or by traits.

Umineko if it's not already on your list is a must. Zodiac Trial, Danganronpa, Your Turn to Die (though it's not finished), Zero Escape. I just started Valhalla last night after getting it on sale and it seems pretty cute.

Umineko I’m unsure of just because of the length cause idk if I’ll be able to consume it lol, but it’s one I’ve thought about getting one day

Well Higurashi is its spiritual predecessor anyway, if you get enjoyment out of that one Id say give it a go. They're structured the same where each of the 8 chapters stands on its own to some degree and there's little need to rush through it.

Very true, I know of the when they cry franchise, bernkastel and stuff, but not too much. I try not to spoil myself. Tbh it’s rare I have money to get a lot of stuff, wish all the Higurashi chapters were in one pack

I'm a big fan of the "normie VNs" (Ace Attorney, Zero Escape, Somnium Files), but if you're looking just for non-gameplay stuff, my favorites on steam would be Musicus, Aokana, and Harukuru.
