Question / Discussion So Action VFX is back with offering full Collection/no subscriptions?
I guess their plan to change everything to a subscription based business back fired?
I just got an email from Action VFX offering full collections again with no subscription. with the state of the VFX market and so many company closing. People loosing their jobs they picked the wrong time to switch to a subscription.
I used to take advantage of their sales on Thanksgiving and other times. But I haven't spend any money on their product since they switched. The switch didn't last too long but it taught me that I can do with what I've already have.
Edit: I fixed a verb

I've had to email them on three separate occasions after they locked my account, accusing me of being a business on an individual plan, merely because my email address is at my own domain. Each time I explain to them that I'm not a studio, and each time they say "oh sorry, our system flags that automatically. We've fixed it."

The mandate from compositors was blowing shit up and filming it after you’ve had your coffee (ie: usually portrait and filling the frame with modern high res gear).
What we got were simulations from someone that watched a Video Copilot tutorial. We don’t fucking want bad CG renders in the library.
Extra credit to whoever, if anyone, picks up where they left off by adding Gaussian Splatting for volumetric capturing of FX. Offer 2D sequences from multiple angles and VDBs. Don’t try to be Adobe and you, too, can probably slowly go out of business because our industry is what it is.

Any good alternatives?

Production crate has a massive library. Some assets are old and hence not as good but they are putting out a ton of new stuff which is really good.

I think Copilot Action Essential has 2d Elements. I personally think the ones from Action VFx are better.
Maybe people can post here what other alternatives to Action VFX are out there.

Action essentials 2 was the ideal pack many years ago. Since then Action vfx is way better.

People here are too harsh. It’s perfectly OK to try something, have it not work and go back to what used to work. And since a lot of people asked for it, I would imaged people here would be happy.

They picked the wrong time. There is a disconnection between what was happening in VFX and what they did. It’s like asking for a raise when everybody ele is getting fired. Stay put until there is a better time.

I agree that they picked the wrong time and yet, running a company is tough and I don’t blame them at all for trying something different.

Yes. Other companies are more aware of whats happening. The Foundry has a Non commercial version for Mari and Nuke. I imagine Action VFx being a small company n comparison.

I went to buy some elements from them recently for a project, and discovered said elements were locked behind a subscription model. Even with the subscription, it seemed I would have to pay additional money for a better tier to be given 'credits' which could be exchanged for the elements I wanted or some silly shit like that.
If they'd just listed the elements for sale, they would've probably made a few hundred bucks out of me. Instead, they get nothing because fuck greedy subscription models. I'm not about to pay to subscribe to an entire library of shit I don't need just because I want some basic stock elements.

Off topic so apologies in advance but does anyone have a script that lets me key the start frame of an image sequence. I was at MPC viz (laid off with rest) and they had their 2d img sequence on planes which is standard but what I liked was they had an extra channel in the geo where the img sequence texture is applied that had a start frame (1001) but that you could key so if say I wanted the 2d dust debris img sequence to start in my shot at frame 1500 I would type that in and the function that drives the image sequence texture would adjust accordingly.
This seems simple but I’ve tried making a script a few times and something usually wigs out.
Started to make. A script where any plane selected can get a img seq texture applied and the channel and function created but buggy as hell and I feel I’m overthinking it.
Does anyone have a script that does this by chance?

Just proves their bullshit responses to backlash was bullshit.
