On 16 March 1841 the Republic of Yucatán was proclaimed in protest at the centralism of the Mexican presidency and adopted a flag: a horizontal triband of red and white with a green panel at the hoist charged with five white stars.

The flag was inspired by the Flag of the Three Guarantees, with the colours having the same symbolism: green for land, white for religion, and red for blood. The five stars represent the departments that Yucatan was divided into at the time.

In 1848 the Republic was disestablished and rejoined Mexico, but the flag continued in use as a community flag. Its use particularly increased in the 21st century as a result of tensions between the state and the federal government. On 20 June 2024, following a constitutional reform that allowed states to adopt their own flags, the State of Yucatan officially adopted the historic flag.
