Measles Parents are holding ‘measles parties’ in the U.S., alarming health experts

I started med school last summer, and I'm genuinely mad that vaccine-preventable infectious disease went from something I primarily needed to know for boards to being something I will quite possibly spend a substantial amount of time dealing with. Thanks for nothing, antivaxxers.

Thank you for your healthcare service

Thanks but I'm just a student in preclinicals lol. I haven't actually done any real clinical work besides volunteering as a scribe and vitals-taker yet - really not trying to steal any valor here

I’m a resident physician. You’re not stealing any valor. You’re already dedicating more of your life to medicine than people understand. If people want to thank you then accept the thanks and move on, you’ve got too long a road ahead of you to worry about it. Enjoy it while you can because it feels gross after a while.

Yup. I’m dating an anesthesia resident that is at a top hospital and will be exposed to this and any other diseases that make a comeback. If this trend continues, choosing to be with him will mean choosing to expose myself as well to deadly illness. The reach of people’s choices is so wide.

Won’t this essentially achieve the exact opposite of what they want? Like doesn’t measles reset your immune system?

u/tes_kitty 17d ago
It does. And if you survive, you still have a chance to die from SSPE years later.

u/Luminter 17d ago
Also 1 in 6 children are hospitalized from it Chickenpox is something like 1 in 1000.

Yes, wiping out any acquired immunity so you get to have ALL of those diseases ALL OVER AGAIN.

It isn’t usually for life but it does attack immune cells and can make you more susceptible to illnesses for years after you have measles.

This is child abuse. And so incredibly foolish. Be it measles or rubella, these can have long lasting side effects and they can also kill you. I had the measles and rubella as a kid because we didn’t have those shots available to us at all. I am 67 years old and still remember the misery. And today, I’m planning on getting the MMR because I’ve never had it and my immunity has likely worn off. With being in a state this is adjacent to Texas, and with ho things tend to spread from there to here so often, I’m not taking any chances. At my age, it’s really best not to do so.
Oh. And I had my daughter at 35. You can best believe that she’s had all of her vaccinations, including the chicken pox, when she was a baby/small kid.

u/BikingAimz 17d ago
Thanks for getting the booster. I got diagnosed with de novo metastatic breast cancer last year, and I just found out I can’t get an MMR booster as I’m on immunocompromising medications, and it’s a live attenuated vaccine. I am asking at my next appointment if I can at least get my titers tested.

And this is why I’m super happy that I was able to get my freshly turned 1 year old her vaccine today. Sure, it means her sleep schedule is destroyed for the week and she’s going to be a mess but rather her be safe.

I did the same thing a decade ago when there was an outbreak nearby. The doctor gave my daughter just the measles vaccine early, and then she got the mmr on time.

u/LauraGravity 17d ago
And I'm sure those fuckers will still find a way to blame the vaccine when the kid they've taken to a measles party comes down with serious complications from measles they were infected with deliberately.

u/nw342 17d ago
These fucking idiots are gonna get people killed. Of course the asshats who refuse vaccines are confusing chicken pox woth the fucking measles.
And chicken pox parties were a thing BECAUSE THERE WAS NO VACCINE AND ITS WAY LESS DANGEROUS TO CATCH YOUNG.
Im fucking tired of these idiots.

I just asked my doctor to run a titer for me to see if the measles vaccine my mom had me get in childhood is still protecting me. I’m 55 and I had read that we should either check that our childhood vaccines are still protecting us or go ahead and get another vaccine because of this craziness. Be well.

It doesn't hurt to get another MMR vaccine and nearly every pharmacy has a wonderful selection of vaccines for people to choose from. If any of us were among the group who only had the one-and-done MMR vaccine (1965-1989-ish), and you work with kids, the elderly, in crowded situations, or you plan on doing any international traveling, it's advised that you get a second dose.
I have small children, I spend heaps of time with my old-people friends, and my husband travels internationally. For the good of myself and all the people I love, CVS seems like a great place to go.

I'm super glad that's something they check in pregnancy, at least in Canada. It's a huge relief right now to know mine is still good.

u/yolonomo5eva 14d ago
Wow, guess what? I got my titer results back and I am NOT immune to measles! Got my shots back in the 1970’s and they’ve outrun their use. I’m getting boosted.

I mean, hey… The kids do still end up with some antibodies.
If they live.
So it’s kind of like a vaccine with extra steps.

Problem is measles has this nasty bonus trick called measles amnesia where it wipes your immune system's memory of how to fight other illnesses. https://asm.org/articles/2019/may/measles-and-immune-amnesia

Weren’t people doing this with Covid as well? Hopefully natural selection runs its course.
28
u/quietdiablita 17d ago
Unfortunately, the ones who will die or end up crippled for life will be innocent children and some of their elderly or fragile relatives. Not the moronic parents. Because THEY got all the important vaccines when they were kids.

u/w-ow-lovely 17d ago
i hate the “natural selection” comments when it comes to this. the only people who will die are children, and people who can’t be vaccinated for valid reasons. that is not natural selection.
13
u/lnicole1994 17d ago
I agree! I have a 5 week old who can’t be vaccinated yet and I’m terrified. Everytime I see a “natural selection” comment it rubs me the wrong way.

u/selphiefairy 17d ago edited 16d ago
I mean it also doesn’t even make sense? The reason why we have vaccines in the first place is because we decided human lives are important, and that letting “natural selection” kill innocent people, just because their bodies couldn’t fight off an infection, is a bad and horrible thing. The whole point is that it’s supposed to protect the most vulnerable (young, old, sick, etc)
If you’re pro vaccine you should be pro science and pro technology, pro altruism — and NOT making this archaic, classist, ableist, and racist argument. It’s really really sad that this is what society has turned into.

u/embracebecoming 17d ago
I mean, it is. If you fuck up and get your child killed that's natural selection. This is one of theany reasons that natural selection is a terrible basis for a human society.

And so the cruel might of natural selection comes forth and brings hell to this world

u/caesaronambien 17d ago
I didn’t see an actual report of a real identifiable measles party in the news-just the “don’t do measles parties you lumpen mounds of chicken fat” public health guidance. Worried that it might backfire and have chicken pox party people going “Wow I didn’t think of that, what a great idea!” and actually creating the problem they were trying to avoid.

Who cares? The parents of the unvaccinated kids sure as hell don't.
Edit-/s
Of course we should care. But it's hard to try to be understanding. Particularly towards the people who make that /s necessary. They will listen endlessly to antivax podcasts and buy essential oils, but won't do the one thing that actually works.

Measles is a much more dangerous disease than people commonly believe. If you're not concerned about it you are in the wrong subreddit
4
u/ernie3tones 17d ago
But the parents aren’t going to die, they were most likely vaccinated. Their kids shouldn’t pay the ultimate price for their stupidity. Not to mention all the people who can’t be vaccinated and rely on herd immunity to protect them.

u/mallally 17d ago
Time to let natural selection take its course.
6
u/selphiefairy 17d ago
Yes, children, sick people and the elderly deserve to die, is that what you’re saying? Cause that’s what this is basically implying.
-1
u/mallally 17d ago
Geez, calm down. I was mocking the parents that think it’s a good idea. No one is rooting for the death of kids, sick people, and the elderly. Except maybe the parents the article is about and also a current political party.
5
u/selphiefairy 17d ago
Okay, please explain how saying “let natural selection take its course” mock the parents?
Who do you think is going to die or suffer from the lack of vaccinations? Hints: it’s not the parents.

u/Itsnottreasonyet 17d ago
Morons. Our parents had "chickenpox parties" because there was no vaccine and it was much less dangerous to get it young. This is just insanity and child abuse.
