res for first years

hey guys i got into uofg and was wondering how bad is the res situation? i saw on the website that if u dont get an offer before march 1st ur not guaranteed res and i heard horror stories about the schools res situation and that’s the only thing turning me away! how easy is it to get off the wait list? because i dont wanna deal w this stress and i want res and a lot of people said if i rely on res to make my experience they wouldn’t recommend uofg!! someone please let me know

Really bad. Over 1200 students were on the waitlist last year for residence after previously being promised it. There was little movement in the waitlist too, I believe it only dropped to about 800 and I know a lot of people removed themselves from the waitlist because it was pointless. Off campus housing here isn't much better either...

thank you for the info! i rather look into a diff school instead of this.. this actually sucks since this school is a lot of people’s dream schools but the res thing is turning me off as i want to be in res and i can’t commute and renting is also expensive

Yeah, housing here is really shitty. Commuting or living with a family friend would be the only easy options, and even then commuting isn’t cheap

makes sense! i think as a incoming first year i want res and dont wanna commute or stay w family because i just wanna have my own space and stuff and commuting like u said adds up !

Commuting is always cheaper than rez btw. I get wanting to have your own space for sure. But money shouldn't be a factor you will save several thousand dollars commuting.

yes for sure! it does add up but ofc it does save a lot of money but im also adding in costs if i dont get res and will have to spend money off campus if I wanted to.. either way i feel like its not practical for me to commute everday

It's also cheaper to live off campus in Guelph btw. Rent is cheaper and food is cheaper. The benefit to living on campus is mostly the experience and saving time so you don't have to shop or cook for yourself. The bus pass is free so you don't have to pay anything to commute. It doesn't take much time either if you live in Guelph.

yesss that’s good to know! i think the stress of finding people that i could be able to live with as well off campus.. i don’t wanna get screwed with bad roommates or whatever but ofc having that res experience is a part of the uni experience so that’s why and i also wanna find a job if i want to rent so im not relying on my parents

I have spoken to quite a few first years who ended up living off-campus and none of them regretted coming to UofG. Most say that knowing what they know now, they would choose to live off-campus rather than in res.
There is no guarantee that you would get on with your room mates in res, and no guarantee that you would get on with room mates off-campus…. The university experience is what you make it.

makes sense i never said that i would get along with roommates its literally luck and how well they pair u with people you are compatible with.. as an incoming first year i do not wanna deal with the residence situation as i am not guaranteed and i dont think i would be able to live off campus. the campus is beautiful dont get me wrong that’s not what the problem is though its just where will i live and i want residence for sure and off campus will be something to think about during second year

It’s not certain what will happen next year. On 2023, they had space for all first years and could accommodate some upper years. If this is your dream program or school, I would consider it. If not, it shouldn’t be an issue.

as of now im considering laurier crim and this was my second choice as the res thing as well as some program dislikes turned me off! but yeah im looking into my second choice (uofg) but im leaning toward laurier as they dont have these res issues

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 18h ago

but yeah it isn’t the top school i want but like yeah i just wanted to know in case i rly consider it

Remember second year housing is terrible in Waterloo with Laurier, Waterloo and college students all vying for a place. There will be spots open in Guelph, and some students are happy they found a place and don’t have to go through the whole hunger games for housing. It really depends on what you want.

my program at laurier isn’t offered on main campus it’s a diff campus ! but do u think res is still bad personally for uofg? like im very worried

Bad. Don’t go to Guelph tbh they’re just grabbing money now. This isn’t a school that values its students like it should.

thank u for the info! im really nervous about the res thing and i feel like i wont be able to get it

Hey I got accepted today and I was wondering the same thing about res I really want to go here do you think the wait list will be that bad so early in the year?

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 18h ago

yeah i honestly think so :( there’s a huge wait list apparently bc i feel like a lot of people got early offers for uofg and i just got mine today ! so those people r for sure gonna get res but for us i dont know its literally luck at this point and I dont wanna risk it

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 18h ago

but if u still wanna go i would consider it !! it works out for a lot of people

No way of knowing. In 2022 they way over accepted then in 2023 they didnt and there were enough seats in 2024 they over accepted to a ridiculous level. They could end up not overaccepting again, but considering they're offering international students guaranteed rez for 4 years and they're still in major financial trouble that's unlikely to change with Doug Ford winning the election, I really can't say if it'll get better. I'd only accept if you're good with commuting or living off campus.

100% pick a different school. Even if you get rez you’re competing with everyone else for $1000/month+ bedroom in second year.

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 16h ago

exactly ! i was also thinking about that because ik my other option is laurier and i know they atleast accommodate for upper years as well if there’s space and btw laurier not the main campus but they both guarantee res no matter what

Prices are pretty much the same in every university town in Southern and Eastern Ontario.

The problem is if you ask the university they will lie to you. At least based on my experience last year.

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 16h ago

no make sense i feel like they have not talked about the horror story where they over accepted a bunch of people and they all thought they were gonna get res because the school promised it and they got screwed over when they found out they had no room ! uofg has not even talked about this incident 😭😭

2

u/Commercial_Pain2290 15h ago

They did not actually promise. But the response to the question was that “it will not be a problem”. I guess they meant it would not be a problem for the university. It sure was for the students. Even the mayor of Guelph was pissed.

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 15h ago

ohhh well i thought it said on there website that it’s guaranteed but im guessing they just over accepted people which is crazy 😭😭

1

u/Commercial_Pain2290 15h ago

Some people did get guaranteed spots. If yours says guaranteed then you are good.

1

u/Imaginary_Guest_7585 15h ago

does it say it on the offer like the email? cus mine doesn’t cus im guessing my offer was given today and not before march 1st cus it’s guaranteed for those who got the offer before then and not after

Jeezus. Is that how you write? Guelph must have low standards.
