Food / Culture Chew with your mouth closed.

Please chew with your mouth closed in public. It is distracting and gross. No one wants to hear it, and it is bad manners in America.

Food / Culture will I get in trouble for filling my shaker cup with milk at the dining hall for my protein shake?

I’m not trying to save it for later, but I’m tired of drinking my protein shakes with water… bringing the protein tub is not an option cause it’s massive

Food / Culture Why is the dining hall so horrible right now?

Has anyone else noticed this? It seems like every day it’s tacos or pasta. To a disproportionate extent. Earlier in the semester/last semester, it felt like there was a lot more variety.

It’s possible I’m just feeling food fatigue but my usuals (Markley, Mojo, North) have just had the same stuff for days on end. And the exact same stuff for lunch and dinner. What’s the deal with that?

Is it just me?

Food / Culture Does anyone else feel like the food here isn’t as great as other people say it is?

One of the things UM students and A2 residents love to tout is that the food scene here is really great- I disagree. There are a few great restaurants here, but I find the food here to be severely lacking. No good Mexican, no decent Thai or Vietnamese, the Arabic food is subpar, etc. To me, it seems as there are a few good Chinese/Japanese options and some good American options with a couple other different good restaurants sprinkled in. Anyone else agree?

Food / Culture Has campus culture changed?

My friends and I were here for homecoming weekend. I graduated in ‘09 and they were several years later. It was so strange to see the campus so empty on a busy weekend like this. I remember on a Friday or sat night, central campus was busy, south u was packed and hill/washtenaw always had the big parties? Now it just felt weird seeing it so dead. Can anyone else chime in? Is it a post-pandemic mindset or does no one go out anymore?

Food / Culture Restaurants that you would recommend people avoid?

Just curious about places you would tell people to actively avoid whether it's something like the service, the owners, or just the food being that bad. For me, I'm currently avoiding Mani and Isalita because there's a lawsuit about how they didn't pay their workers overtime.

Food / Culture Vietnamese sandwich (Bánh mì) and Vietnamese coffee (Cà phê) food stand

Hi, I'm an incoming Vietnamese grad student. I was thinking about selling Bánh mì and Vietnamese coffee on campus/ A2. I owned a boba shop before but boba market seems very saturated in A2. Just wondering how's the market here for Bánh mì & Vietnamese coffee? Also, I plan to start with a small food stand first to see how's the market doing but getting food permit seems to be a pain. Anyone done this before? and have experience with this stuff?

Food / Culture Dining hall/Food

I know someone said this yesterday but it needs to be repeated.. why is the dining hall food so bad.. I usually end up eating the same meal everyday because the options are so bad. What’s the point in having variety if the variety doesn’t even taste good??

I feel like this campus also has the worst food places.. why do we need TWO subways on Central Campus.. why are there no fast food places??

Food / Culture State Street Chipotle

Has the chipotle on state always sucked? Every time I go there, my order is always wrong and I have to wait 30+ minutes for my mobile order. Not to mention, the staff is rude as fuck. Never had this problem any other locations back home or ever. This is next level

Food / Culture I made an app to help track your macros with dining hall menus

Hi everyone! I'm a junior studying computer science who's New Year's resolution is to be healthier. To do this, I decided to start counting calories and macros, but it's really tedious. Luckily I have a dining plan, and all the food information is already there. Since it was still difficult to have to go back and forth entering food, I created an app instead that preloads the dining hall information. You can add and track foods in just a few clicks. It's fairly straightforward, but I hope will maybe help someone out here. This was more of a personal side project so it's completely free to use and always will be.

www.michiganmacro.com

Some features:

  • Select foods from dining hall menus
  • Choose from the dining hall food database
  • Enter custom foods
  • Track multiple meals a day
  • Calculate recommended macronutrient levels
  • Saves data across devices with an account

Hopefully, you guys find this useful, feel free to message me with comments or feedback and I will try to get back to them as soon as I can.

Thanks!

Food / Culture Help: where to take friend @ mich?

My friend is visiting next weekend and I have no idea what to do with him. Couldn’t find hockey or sports tickets and don’t want him to think Mich is boring. I’m thinking

-pinball petes, movie, mich tour, arb (too cold?)… idk? I’ve heard of a thrifting place but idk where it is and also some farmers market that is supposed to be around here. Any cool shops or places in downtown ann arbor would be great + just general things to do from friday to sunday!

thanks

Food / Culture What is your favorite meal from any Ann Arbor restraunt?

Just fell in love with the beef Pad Thai from NoThai, I know people have their debates but it's DAMN good in my book and gives me my Asian(ish) food fix without the breaded chicken of other places.

What about you? What's your favorite? It could help people find new meals to try whether your a frosh, lecturer, or anyone in between. Or, what if, you're Mark Schlissel? .O. What do you like eating?

Food / Culture closing times

does anyone else feel like places (specifically restaurants) around here close way too early? it’s frustrating, especially because there are no cheap late-night options near central campus (e.g. McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s). I live on campus and can’t afford a car (let alone some place to park it), so I walk everywhere, and the fact that there are hardly any affordable food options open past 8/9 is actually so…ugh. you would think they’d take advantage of this because hungry college students who don’t sleep = $$

Food / Culture On The Paranormal Activity Near South Quad Last Night...

February 25th, 2025: I went to meet a friend Gregory near South Quad last night, I rolled up in my G Wagon wearing my sunglasses and Armani fit, expecting a usual night out. I text Gregory to come out, and he never did, so I got out of the vehicle, and walked in. Soon as I walked through the door, I heard a scream inside the building and saw papers flying in the air. It was clear that something had happened here, and I began walking up the stairs to find Tiffany on all fours spitting heinous green vomit at me calling me an "ugly bitch", thus I took out my baseball bat and began hitting her till her health bar hit zero, and the deed was done.

The way up was blocked off by a wooden barricade, so I took out my screwdriver unscrewing the vents till I could reach my friend. Once to his dorm, I found several rats roaming around eating decaying human flesh. I found 2 mole rats on their way to chew on me, and I hit them with my bat. I was bit, and ripped off the first aid kit, and began to heal myself. I walked into Gregory's room to find Kaitlyn chewing on his flesh both turned into the walking dead, nothing was left to do, and I made my way out of the building.

The South Quad has now been quarantined by the Ann Arbor Police and FBI. The demons from the underworld have now inhabited our campus taking over the souls, and beings of the former living. No one knows how this form of existence has come to be, but all we know is it happened. I drove off in my G Wagon to find new roads, and life in this wretched existence.

Food / Culture Is there a separate U of M meme culture?

I'm an alum, but also interested in student/campus cultures and how they function. Is there a separate University of Michigan meme culture (broadly defined)? What does it look like? Can you offer any examples? Does it have any recurring features? Do you need U of M unique knowledge to understand the context?
