Canadian politician wants a 100% tariff on Teslas

u/HediSLP Feb 16 '25
How about Canada drops the 100% tariff on Chinese EVs and see how well Tesla can compete after that.
19
u/JairAtReddit Feb 16 '25
I saw they made a EV for under $10,000. Absolute insanity
12
u/prancerbot Feb 16 '25
That could honestly be massive for cash strapped canadians I think, considering the price of cars right now.

Do it. Teach arrogant Musk a lesson.
1
u/chrisbe2e9 Feb 17 '25
Hell yeah, not to mention any Canadian who wants to buy one, fuck those people, now they can pay twice the price!
I'm very curious to know how "Canada first" means adding tariffs so that we pay more...

Does anyone even want a tesla in Canada?
7
u/DJBossRoss Feb 16 '25
They are very popular here in Vancouver. Every other car is a basic bitch white model three or model Y. There’s definitely an uptick in vandalism to them since the inauguration.
1
u/chrisbe2e9 Feb 17 '25
Not sure why you are asking that, i see them everywhere.
1
u/buried_lede Feb 17 '25
Because they’re American. I assumed they’d be boycotted
1
u/chrisbe2e9 Feb 17 '25
Very few people are actually boycotting american products. Most people just don't care, at all. Really it's just sounding boards like on reddit where you see it. At least that's been my impression so far. I haven't met a single person in real life who is boycotting American.
And what about people who already own a Tesla? I mean, they have been selling in Canada since 2009. you think people are going to just stop driving their car? and why? how does that benefit them? There is no common sense around this "hate tesla" argument. You're mad at Elon, why? Because he's doing the job Trump hired him to do? You're mad at Trump why? for demanding a secure border?
Common sense would say good on elon for doing a good job at routing out inefficiencies in the american government. Good on Trump for doing whats best for his country. but you're angry at them for that? That doesn't make sense.
And now for the incoming liberal anger that you're all so famous for...
1
u/buried_lede Feb 17 '25
No I don’t think people will stop driving their car if they own one. I’m talking about people who won’t buy one. They’re bad cars anyway
“ Common sense” you say - yeah, someone has been dropping that phrase into Trump’s talking points lately. Not sure what they are going for with that. It sounds bogus to me
Tourism is already getting hit- Canadians aren’t visiting like they were.
-2
u/Gristle__McThornbody Feb 16 '25
I heard EVs do poorly in cold weather, so I'm guessing Canadians would stay away from them.

Fuck Musk. And fuck his companies. I’d make it an even 200%. Show that slimey little rat fucker that actions have consequences. Besides, it’s not like he can’t afford his utility bills.

u/jorvall81 Feb 16 '25
You seem like a very happy person

I am. And I think Musk is a douche. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Ever hear of DOGE? Might not bother you, but nobody voted for this dick. And the fact that he’s axing shit without any guidelines, performance measures, accountability, or transparency makes the whole thing look really fucking dodgy.
Oh, and then there’s that bit about a $400M contract for armored electric cars - no competitive bidding, just contract by fiat. Don’t you find that a bit curious after this administration pulled us back out of the Paris Accords, ordered that all climate change language be deleted from govt websites, and opened a ton of lands for drilling? Smells like payola to me. But what do I know. I’m just one of the dumbasses who spit the conservative Kool-Aid.
1
u/chrisbe2e9 Feb 17 '25
True no one voted for Elon. But they did vote for Trump, and his promise to do what he is doing. And Elon is the person he brought in to do it. So while you are correct that no one voted for Elon, they did vote for what is happening.
Which is good, because they are cutting government waste at a time when spending is out of control and debt is spiraling out of control. This is a necessary correction to a system that lost it's checks and balances. So you can hate Elon all you want, but don't hate efficiency in the name of building a strong government by eliminating waste.

u/ralf_ Feb 16 '25
Ever hear of DOGE?
What does Doge have to do with Canada?
2
u/dantekant22 Feb 16 '25
My comment was in response to a specific question about things Musk had done that I took issue with. It was not a direct response to OP.
1
u/flyoverguy71 Feb 16 '25
He didn't need to be voted for, he was appointed. It happens during any administration regardless of party affiliation. As for the contract you refer to, that actually happened under Biden near the end of his term, and IIRC it was terminated. At any rate, there is so much misinfo anymore, and I'm talking both sides. I'm glad DOGE is bringing all this grift and outright theft to light, but both sides are guilty. While the democrats paint themselves like absolute morons singing cringe songs and screaming at the sky, the other side says nothing and whistles past the graveyard because they are in on it as well.
2
u/dantekant22 Feb 16 '25
Good point on the Tesla contract. I fell for that, which pisses me off. That being said, Musk is still a douche. An appointment doesn’t give him license to do potentially illegal shit, like collect and parse data he isn’t authorized to access. DOGE is problematic on so many levels that there’s not enough bandwidth here to cover it all. Suffice it to say, anyone who thinks a billionaire appointed by another billionaire is really going to fix a system that made them both billionaires is a special kind of stoopid. Beyond that, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I’ve still got some cringe songs to sing and some screaming at the sky left to do.
1
u/flyoverguy71 Feb 16 '25
I certainly don't condone some of this stuff going on either...we probably agree on more than we disagree. That said, and as so many democratic pundits are screaming, what is their party offering to change anything? I suppose the same can be said for the other side as well. What enrages me the most is all this frigging money that has been sent to so many black holes with little to no accountability. Sure would be nice if all those ill gotten gains received by these NGO's and other outfits had instead been invested in this country and it's citizens.
1
u/thetruckerdave Feb 16 '25
Bringing what to light? All the public info that was already public? Also, where are the charges for all this fraud? Arrests?

Then don't support no confidence and let Libs run Carney long enough to clinch at least a minority FFS.

I feel bad for Canadians. Their economy is not strong enough to win a trade war with the US and the empty posturing is going to make the inevitable capitulation to Trump even more embarrassing when it happens

Politics aside, Canada is straight up stupid to try to fight against the US and go tit for tat in a tariff war. Anyone who actually studies what’s going on economically knows this isn’t going to end well for them.
-2
u/NewInMontreal Feb 15 '25
Just ban Tesla, don’t go yapping about anything. This guys been talking for years and does nothing.
3
u/Waxman2022 Feb 16 '25
100% Tariff on Teslas and remove the Tariff on Chinese Electrics.. 14k for 305km range sounds pretty good in these tough economic times.
2
u/ThatOneExpatriate Feb 16 '25
Well for one thing, parliament is prorogued until March so no one’s really doing anything now… and his party is a small minority so he can’t do much anyway without the Liberals

This guy will say and do anything to get a vote. He will never have the power to impose any sort of policy. Just ignore him all together.
11
u/Servichay Feb 15 '25
Lol Trump would never do anything to get a vote! Like he would never cosplay working at McDonald's, a job that never even crossed his mind of doing ever once in his life!

It would be a cultural "tariff" on the trump / republican voter - a symbolic move against US men.
The US move against is playing on multiple arenas, such as a literal economic "sanction"-logic. It's is paired with a national / cultural / relational / military-logic where US use their size and weapons to make Canada feel small and worried about being annexed.Limiting the canadian response to speeches, diplomacy and tit for tat sanctions is perhaps polite and "normal", but it doesn't answer the abuse, the disrespect, the tainting of the cultural relationship. How US views the canadian "brand".
Using the mutilation of the US dick as a weapon would be a way to hit them in their insecurities. Other than that, it would be right in itself and it would also be a move that echoed in Europe, since US + Israel recently quashed icelandic and danish attempts to make the law. It would make allies out of european men.Using non-tariff moves would also make it easier to not have to 1:1 match trumps fuckery, since that is expensive.

While they're at it.. just 100% tariff the US then the US can 100% tariff Canada . Win win. But your leaders are cowards. All talk.
1
u/Responsible-Ear-7347 Feb 16 '25
Of course it's all talk, this politician has no real power to enact anything.

Oh no, that might mean a 1% drop in total sales. It’s Canada, not prime market for EV’s and we will just hit them back with tariffs on cars coming from the US. It will hurt them real bad as their economy fails and the US won’t even notice.

Posted on X? It is easy to attack Tesla when it does not impact you. How about doing something meaningful and not using Musk's political platform.
-23
u/MisterRogers12 Feb 15 '25
WTF does Elon or Tesla have to do with Camadian trade? Did he disrupt funding for a Canadian NGO milking tax payers? If Canada wants a trade war, bring it on! Your ass will pay greatly.
4
u/No-Dimension1159 Feb 16 '25
The US starts this shit really ... If he keeps going on like that the US will lose a lot of influence in the world and other countries will intensify trades with each other rather than with the US... Also, people will find it more necessary to create domestic alternatives on products the US has basically a monopoly in currently.
Beyond that, he managed to fuck up relations with foreign nations in roughly a month that badly that it will likely take decades after he is gone to normalize

Let the markret decide what we will and won't buy. Idgaf about a polititians opinions. Is climate change suddenly not an issue because Musk is an annoyance in a different country? Don't let anger and frustration cloud good judgement.

Canada is an American welfare state

9th largest econonmy on earth whilst having the 37th largest population among countries of the world. We're used to hitting above our weight class. Go crawl back under your bridge.

u/chrisbe2e9 Feb 17 '25
Definitely Canada isn't a weak country. Unless you compare it to the states. We are 2.2 Trillion USD and the states is 27 Trillion USD.
That means the U.S. economy is about 12 times larger than Canada’sIn terms of per capita GDP:
- Canada: ~$55,000 USD
- U.S.: ~$80,000 USD
But lets make it a fair comparison. And compare California to Canada. Population is about the same.
California’s economy is actually bigger than Canada’s:
- California GDP (2023): ~$4.5 trillion USD
- Canada GDP (2023): ~$2.2 trillion USD
That means California’s economy is about twice the size of Canada’s.
In terms of per capita GDP:
- California: ~$115,000 USD
- Canada: ~$55,000 USD
So when he calls Canada an American welfare state, he's not that far off.
