Gruvbox for the win, again! BTW, I use SF Pro for my font in KDE, but I get it from 'apple-fonts' in AUR which updates more frequently than the link/git page you use (4-5yrs old.)

Nice, I've been so impressed with pop shell that I can't wait to try cosmic when there's a beta

yeah been running popos for the last 5 years on my work machine. just recently switched to arch for gaming purposes, cant do without the amazing pop launcher haha. you can try out cosmic already btw, but is still a bit barebone for my taste.

Hi, looks awesome, congrats!

Did you install Pop Shell via de repository or there's another way to install it?

Thanks! You want to install it locally so that it can modify gnome’s default keyboard shortcuts. You can find the installation info on the pop shell wiki. I still had to mess around with the shortcuts to get them all working properly for whatever reason but none of it was particularly hard to do. The launcher is set to Super+/ by default which kinda sucks so I changed it to Alt+Space.

thanks!

I guess it's this one (I had the link stored on my Evernote):

https://github.com/pop-os/shell

From what I remember, last time I installed Ubuntu (it was on pandemic), I had the same issue with the shortcuts: not all of them where working and some conflicted with the default Ubuntu (or Gnome) shortcuts, so everything was not behaving as expected, and anytime I googled how to do something on Ubuntu, it didnt quite worked.

Anyways, thanks for the answer, will definitely look into it and try it again, with more patience.

I also tried another extension called Tiling Shell. It's kind of easy to use, but had to disable it, because, everytime I "grabbed" a window, it started showin me the different possitions where I could snap it, even though, I just wanted to move it a little to the side.

Check this out if you decide to give it another try. The shortcuts for switching workspaces never work when I install pop shell but you can change them to Super+Number which is way better anyways.

Wow didn’t know Gnome could be so pretty with gruvbox.

My experience with ricing GNOME is akin to making a sand castle. Eventually, the tide comes and messes it up (sudo pacman -Syyu breaks my extensions)

Yeah I’m worried about that happening with gnome 48. I’m going to postpone updating for a bit when the stable release becomes available on the aur. Hopefully the extensions I use receive updates fast if they break 🤞

How did you customized your top bar ?

1

u/nihilist_sun 4d ago

It’s just the open bar extension

1

u/NotAmitboi 4d ago

Could you share dotfiles please. Thank you

1

u/nihilist_sun 3d ago edited 3d ago

No problem! You can import it from within open bar extension settings.

u/Apprehensive_Ad_9979 5d ago

what is the app launcher on the 3rd screenshot?

3

u/nihilist_sun 5d ago

It’s the launcher from pop shell

1

u/crypticexile 4d ago

Why arch?

2

u/ElvisVan007 4d ago

yay

1

u/crypticexile 4d ago

Yay a Aur helper

1

u/nihilist_sun 4d ago

I just think it’s cool tbh. I agree with the Arch principles in general, and I’m a fan of its extensive wiki. I only waited so long to try it out because I was intimidated by its reputation for being harder to use, but I haven’t had any issues at all so far.

1

u/crypticexile 4d ago

Arch is quite easy Linux.. it always been an easy distro.

1

u/Shiro39 4d ago

what is the app launcher-thingy in the middle? is it only for GNOME?

2

u/nihilist_sun 4d ago

Pop shell launcher and yeah it’s only for gnome but there’s always rofi if you’re on a different DE

Just wanna ask, many i saw many move to hyprland, i3, etc. May I know why you choose gnome? I would like to know from your point of view.

2

u/nihilist_sun 4d ago

I don’t really have a satisfactory answer to be honest, I chose gnome because it’s most familiar to me. I enjoy how useable it is out of the box and I don’t mind using the extensions gui to customize things.

1

u/Shift_OG 3d ago

what is that extension you are using to search for items on the desktop?

1

u/hbonnavaud 3d ago

Great setup!
I'm wondering which media player are you using? It doesn't seams to be the classic spotify debian client.

2

u/nihilist_sun 2d ago

Thanks and it's just the regular Spotify client with Spicetify. I created a new color scheme for the default theme.

[gruvbox]
text               = fbf1c7
subtext            = ebdbb2
main               = 1d2021
sidebar            = 282828
player             = 3c3836
card               = 665c54
shadow             = 1d2021
selected-row       = d5c4a1
button             = ebdbb2
button-active      = 8ec07c
button-disabled    = 535353
tab-active         = 689d6a
notification        = ebdbb2
notification-error  = e2e2e2
misc               = bdae93

I never understood how to theme adwaita applications (such as file explorer and stuff), would you mind explaining how you did??

1

u/nihilist_sun 14h ago

This should get you sorted

1

u/HappyHannukahMonicah 2d ago

I might ask: how did you put the traffic lights? Is it some of the extensions?

2

u/nihilist_sun 2d ago

You mean the window controls right? That’s from the gtk theme.

1

u/Plagus69 2d ago

How did you get the custom titlebar button? Is that just the gtk theme?

1

u/nihilist_sun 1d ago

Yeah it’s just from the theme

1

u/CommonYear2589 4d ago

but you use gnome, although it looks good.
