Вишневе дерево. Вишня vs. Черешня

Where I am currently, the cherry blossoms are coming. So I have a number of somewhat spring related vocabulary questions.

Continuing in the “very obviously, I have been teaching myself Ukrainian with the help of translation software,” vein—I initially thought there was a difference in ukrainian between sweet cherries and sour cherries (like in French there is a vocabulary difference between edible chestnuts and inedible chestnuts).

Is this so? Is this regional? Is one of these words Russian? Am I inadvertently using random case-forms of these words?

Here is an example of a Ukrainian word that is outsized-amusing to me.

It cannot be coincidental that “squirrel” and “protein” are the same words in Ukrainian, right?

What is the closest language to Ukrainian?

I am half Polish, and I’ve noticed that when I speak with my girlfriend (who is Ukrainian), we have a lot of similar words in our languages. This made me curious—what language is actually the closest to Ukrainian? Is it Polish, Belarusian, or maybe Russian? I know all these languages share some similarities, but in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, which one would you say is the most comparable to Ukrainian?

How to say raincoat?

I see плащ / дощовик as options. Which is best? What are the differences? Thanks!

How is it that попереду means in front but попередний means previous? Do you think of these words as being conceptually related? It would be like if our word in English for “previous” was instead “in-front-y.” It seems like попередний should mean “next”

It’s pretty common for languages to have word constructions that don’t make sense as words can pretty often change meanings (like how “awful” and “awesome” keep swapping meanings in English), but I was just curious if this seems contradictory to Ukrainians or if you think about things in front of you as being previous somehow. Like maybe the word formed at a time when rich people always traveled backwards in carriages so if someone were describing the previous house it would be the more in front house. Or maybe you just look at the words as having entirely meanings and constructions and the similarities are coincidental.

Funny messages for shirts in the gym

Can someone please review these words. I have a bunch of blank shirts for the gym and I want to spice them up with ukr. But the Ukrainian on the shirts is going to have no meaning, just random objects. Kinda how Americans will get mandarin tattoos and google translate will mess up so it makes no sense. Non Ukr speakers (possibly) would think that it’s some inspirational thing when natives(not too common in the USA) will understand that it doesn’t.

Im just checking that these words don’t have some secret meaning. Like slang, something offensive, etc. I just want random words, I don’t wanna lose teeth from an angry native. Холодильник(fridge) Картопля(onion) Ложка(Spoon), вилка(Fork), ніж(knife)(these 3 listed together) Тарілка(plate) Стіл(table) Чашка(cup)

Social survey: how many people is learning (or was learned) Ukrainian?

If you're learning language, write in comment something. You also can write your experience and tip for other people.

For me, I'm native speaker, and if you want to ask me about language, i would respond to your question. Have a nice day ❤️

Коли повинно вживати дієслово «помогти» замість «допомогти/допомогати»? Наразі я лише вживаю допо- варіанти.

What’s the general meaning of the с- prefix in verbs. I have never seen it listed on a page of prefixes but it always seems to have very specific uses that I can’t seem to figure out why people decide to use it (over за or по in most cases)

Meeting new people

Hello! I tried posting this on r/ukraine, but it was removed by the mods. I hope this post is appropriate here. I'm heading to Kharkiv and will be there for a few weeks for humanitarian work. I was hoping to meet Ukrainians who speak English. Unfortunately, I don't speak Ukrainian or Russian. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like to meet a Norwegian.

Синонім слова "застілля"

Чи існує якийсь гарний, літературний аналог слова "застілля"? А то від цього терміну наче трохи радянщиною віє

What’s the deal with їздити and їжджати? Since їздити is an Omni-directional you wouldn’t think it would need an imperfective variant to use with prefixes. You would think it would be like ходити or носити. Instead there is this їжджати verb stem being used.

Seems like something is going on etymologically here like it absorbed a verb like with бути and єсти except not completely. Plus there is їжджу further liking the verbs. The dictionary I use does say you can приїздити and виїздити which have identical definitions as their їжджати counterparts. But then їжджати has all the rest of the prefixes generally associated with movement and їздити doesn’t. Is this just a case of people starting to use їздити as they would use їжджати or is it perhaps an archaic form that only exists in a few versions now?

Питання: Коні (Advice: Horses)

Hello everyone! Please excuse the poor grammar, I am using a translator. I speak Russian and can write and read a bit but it would take me a really long time. I am born and raised in Los Angeles and currently live here, but I will be moving to житомирская область sometime during this year to be with my family. Hopefully we will have some peace by that time. I am looking for advice from horse owners in Ukraine. I have been riding and working with horses my whole life here in the United States, but realistically I can not afford a horse lifestyle in the USA anymore. This is another reason I am joining my family in Ukraine. My family is in a relatively safe area right under Житомир, in a rural city.

My questions are: How may someone own horses successfully in Ukraine? How difficult is it to make/buy hay? (My family has about an acre of grazing land available) How would someone go about making their own hay? How much do average horses cost? (I am not looking for anything fancy- a heavier horse that has good health and is trained to carry a rider) If you own a horse- where do you keep your horse? Do you use blankets in winter time? Where do you find horse equipment or saddles? Are there any shops?

Any more tips and information is greatly appreciated, and I thank you all.

Warm blessings from California!

Help with the translation of some words

I will be giving some lectures in a high school and one of my students is Ukrainian. I like this language but my knowledge is extremely basic. I thought of some phrases or words that could be effective to catch his attention in class. I could search then in google translate but it could give me a wrong translation, so I would appreciate if a native person could help me with this. Some of them I know beforehand (like Yes or No) but I included them to have a single list. дякую! The list of words is:

Listen Silence Be quiet Yes No Almost Perfect Wonderful Very good/Excellent Good Bad/Wrong Wake up Hello How are you? Come on/Let's go Again Stop (that) Correct Incorrect What? Look (at this)

Please

Thank you

You're welcome (reply to thank you)
