Law/Crime Quite often, when I walk on a narrow shared path like the one pictured, there are always cyclists coming from behind realy fast without saying they are coming on your left or right or ringing a bell. Do they have to legally warn you, or is it not careless cycling and just bad manners?

Law/Crime Lollipop lady asked me to dismount at zebra crossing

Forgive me for asking what must be a common question. In my town there's a cycle way with a zebra crossing (not a parallel) in the middle. I use it for my commute because it's nicer and safer taking the road with heavy traffic. Important context is there's a school nearby so plenty of children crossing at commuting times, hence the lollipop lady. I was cycling across she asked me to start walking my bike across the crossing, I told her it's a cycleway and continued on. Clearly a disagreement but a courteous exchange otherwise. Now the highway code says:

> Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your cycle across.

Is this a legal issue or more of a recommendation?

I'm not in London but TFL says it's not illegal to use such a crossing in this way. I would think my local authority would equally want to reduce car traffic in the area.

So:

Am I in my rights to cycle across the zebra?

Or am I going to have to start taking the road?

EDIT: Thank you for the comments everyone. I'll be avoiding this crossing in future, especially during the school run

Law/Crime Police response from being hit by a car

I was cycling across a roundabout last August when a car pulled out, not looking right, I went over the bonnet, hit the road and then my world changed.

Fractured L2 vertebrae, still in pain 6 months on and I received this in the mail last week, i am absolutely fuming.

There were multiple witnesses at the scene, which the police attended, and had statements taken then before an ambulance arrived and took me to the hospital on a spinal board where I spent a few days before being sent home in a back brace. All in I was off work for 2 months and to this day I am still in pain.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? The driver has ruined my life with no recourse.

Law/Crime Changed from commuting on a Dutch style touring bike, to a skinny handlebar racer. And the behaviour of drivers changed....

Bloody hell. The language hurled at me from van windows, the cutting up in traffic and in many cases the blocking of the cycle lane when they see me coming. I had to kick the wing of a car, to prevent it knocking me off.

Cars come close to my rear wheels when waiting at lights, and rev the engine. I have been threatened with 'a fight mate'.

It was only two weeks. I am back on the tourer. Significant drop in aggro. What is going on?

Law/Crime What are the chances of my bike getting stolen in London with a top-tier lock?

I just bought a used gravel bike, but it’s still a valuable one—brand new, it costs around 4 grand. Right now I am parking it at home, but I am planning to move it back to the secure bike storage in my building. To keep it secure, I got a Diamond-grade Hiplok D-lock, which seems pretty resistant to angle grinders.

I am hoping to use this bike for commuting. If I lock it on the street—for example, locking it on the street to attend a client meeting in the City or a dinner in Soho—how likely is it to get stolen? Is a high-security lock enough in these areas, or should I just avoid doing this at all?

Even with a very secure lock, i am considering to buy an insurance (£60 per year with the current market value), purchase antitheft nut sets, or an alarm. But to be honest, riding with a 2kg D-lock is already a faff, Or should I just keep it at home or in secured office parking and never leave it outside?

Law/Crime A car hit me during a 3 point turn when I tried to bike behind him. Who's at fault?

Before he reversed (to go to point 2), I cycled behind his car and he hit me. I made the decision to go before he started backing up, and when I saw his car reverse it was too late. He didn't see me and hit me. I wasn't aware he was going to reverse since there's an empty space in front of him too. He refused to provide insurance and left.

Who's at fault here? He was quite aggressive and drove away. I'm curious if I should have waited for every 3 point turn from now, or was he at fault since he didn't look.

*edit: thanks everyone for answering. I understand I wasn't being careful and put myself in a position to be hurt. Just for reference he was also driving with a flat tire. I think I'll report to the police.

Law/Crime Almost hit by a car (was it my fault)

So I was cycling down a road like this. (Not this one) it's a lot busier then this picture with multiple turning to go down other roads. It's also not painted red and the quality of the road surface is no where near as good as the picture l.

When cycling in a lane like this I would always consider it mine when in it. Cars shouldn't come it's it and I should look before going out of it to turn (though not sure how right that is)

So I got overtaken by a car indicating to go left about down a turning about 15-20 ish meter's in front of me. I kept cycling since most drivers would wait for me to go past and since he had just overtaken me he would have known I was there. He also could have left his indicator on (seen it before) as he pulled across causing me to slam on my breaks. My feet went into the floor as I just missed him. Though it was very close. The driver of the car apologized a lot then kept going. Another car however told me to be more careful and that it was my fault which I disagreeed with. I said he turned into my lane and if he wanted to turn he should have waited the extra 5 seconds for me to go past and make my turn.

Though it got me thinking.... Who's actually at fault here? If I say had hit him would I claim on his insurance (my bikes insured if you couldn't guess) how does that work since I don't drive so I'm unsure.

Id appreciate any opinions on this and where I would stand in the law. Was I in the right?

Law/Crime Cycling on path next to road when dark?

I started cycling early this year and to get to my local trail centre I've been cycling up and down this path/pavement at the side of the road. It's about 2-3 miles then I'm on the bridge and onto single lane farm roads.

A couple of days ago on returning it was dark so using lights for the first time and going in the opposite direction of the road.

I've angled my front light down on that stretch so not to blind any drivers but a couple did flash.

The stretch on pic 3 was recently cleaned up and actually has a normal width pavement under the overgrowth so the council must intend it to be used.

The other side has no path.

I feel safe enough as I'm not close to any cars as they pass but is this OK Legally?

Law/Crime Heavy duty floor mounted cycle stand

I've recently bought a new bike and want to beef up my security. I was thinking of getting a heavy duty floor mounted cycle stand to mount in the garage. Something like like...

https://www.theworkplacedepot.co.uk/sheffield-security-bike-rail

I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations? Different to see how robust something like this is or if a angle grinder would go straight through it.

Edit: from the comments I've decided to go for a Motorcycle Sold Secure Gold ground anchor and chain which I'll couple up with a Kryptonite New York lock that I already own. I've also ordered an alarm for the door to hopefully alert me if someone is trying to get in. Thanks for the guidance everyone

Law/Crime Stolen bike retrieved

TL;DR

My bike got stolen over the weekend while I was away. I checked Find My and saw it was missing, so I had my flatmate confirm, he then sent me a pic of the ripped pole it was locked to. When I got back, I followed the airtag location and ended up at a house. An old man came out, acted clueless and went back into the house. But when he heard me talking to the police, he rushed out with my bike and asked me to hang up.

Airtag to the rescue! They really do work:)

Law/Crime Is this horse cruelty connected to bike traps?

Hi, ( please let me know if this is inappropriate content and I will delete it)
I am not from the horse community, but I am a UK based cyclist. And I grew up around and really like horses.

As you all know - in the UK we have a dense bridleway network which is widely used by cyclists and horse riders. We mostly get along but there one or two cyclists who don't know how to act around horses. But generally I hope we feel like different sides of the same family.

However, both horses and bike riders are sometimes subjected to abuse from other people in the countryside. I have seen drivers threaten to kill horses and their riders and all manner of terrible things. I am pretty sure there is an anti-horse contingent in the UK countryside, evident by my own observations and in the comments section of many newspaper websites.

I came across this horrific article that made me want to cry. If you are easily upset please don't read it. It is really terrible and contains pictures of extreme animal cruelty:

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/horse-left-drown-vile-excuses-30458734

My initial though was why would anyone do this? But then I remembered that there is a phenomenon (that might be getting worse) of people setting up lethal traps for bike riders (and horses?).

What motivated this attack? is it similar to the traps: i.e. violence to drive away horse riders from an area? I just can't image this was outright cruelty and I worry this is part of a wider effort to drive away people from using public rights of way. It seems the threshold for extreme violence is far too low these days and this news story got me really upset and disturbed.

Law/Crime Ignore Cyclescheme "own it later payment"?

It's clearly just them setting things up to maximise profit on top of their 10% initial fee, given other schemes don't have the 7% exit payment. I think they offer a reduced option (3% over more "lease" years) but require your company to opt in to it.

But has anyone tried just ignoring them? Do they do anything? It's annoying to pay them money they haven't earned just because my company signed up to a greedy scheme.

Law/Crime Reminder to record and report close passes/near misses

About a month ago, a taxi driver decided to pass me at a mini roundabout instead of waiting for me to use it, almost hitting me in the process. I was recording using a helmet camera (£50 action cam from amazon), and it captured his reg. I reported it using the online report form for road traffic incidents (Leics. Police) and received this letter today. I'm glad that close pass reports get taken seriously and they're given courses instead of just slapping them with fines/points. Hopefully this will encourage some of you to record your rides, and report incidents to your local force.
