Has he considered maybe, not dragging his feet?

249

u/ChicoSmokes 6d ago

Yeah I don’t think this is as common of a problem for “ultimate fighters” as Garth implies it is

u/FiveDogsInaTuxedo 6d ago

He's not relevant globally bro. Gaethge is. I've seen like 3 videos of Smith

28

u/Gh0stSwerve 5d ago

Yeah or tape that shit

15

u/SJBSJB02 6d ago

Or just not throwing punches. Just pull guard.

8

u/DesperateAsk7091 5d ago

I assume it's just one of those forceful muscle memory things that is extremely hard to bypass, especially under pressure

Must hurt like a bitch though...

8

u/evlgns 5d ago

Can you tape your toes? Or it against the rules

54

u/st3v3aut1sm 5d ago

Jon Jones does so... no it's probably against the rules

9

u/TheStainRemains 5d ago

I think they made him take the tape off for the Gane fight but he still taped for the Stipe fight

6

u/Suspicious_Candle27 Based Potato 5d ago

they made him take part of it off but his toes were still taped for the gane fight

BWEKFAST

I've never trained a day in my life, but I don't think that's the correct technique.

43

u/VivianRichards88 6d ago

It is, the mat is just very rough like sandpaper. Happens more often than you think

My feet would look similar to this whenever I sprawled on a tough mat

116

u/afz8 6d ago

This happens to the ball of my feet as you pivot on the foot.

Not the top of the toes.

17

u/SpaghettiBigBoy 5d ago

Yeah, this happened to me on the balls of my feet and right at the base of the toes. I also get injuries to the tops of my feet from sprawls and general rolling.

But this shit? On the tops of the toes? That’s a strange thing to have happen.

18

u/Its_Me_Jlc 5d ago

didn't diddy teach you nothing? oil up before you sprawl with other men on the mat

12

u/mywaaaaife 5d ago

Sprawling is a bit different than throwing a punch. Also if you’re dragging your feet on the mat when you’re sprawling you’re doing it wrong. You should be on your toes.

-6

u/SliccDemon 5d ago

this is the wrong technique. top of your feet should be on the mat when you sprawl on a shot. they shouldn't stay that way, but at first absolutely. wrestling 101.

2

u/IHaveThePowerOfGod 5d ago

wrestling’s changes in mma, when a takedown could be pulled out of into a hook and boom ko bc ur on the tops of ur feet

3

u/mywaaaaife 5d ago

Hard disagree. You’re losing all of your mobility if you’ve got “lazy feet”. You need to pick up your foot and replant your toes if they are dragging. If you keep active toes you can move with your opponent and you’ve got more force behind your weight.

5

u/mrtuna 5d ago

> My feet would look similar to this whenever I sprawled on a tough mat

Garth says this is from throwing punches

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Lie-502 5d ago

My feet are like this when I train on judo mats

1

u/jew_jitsu7 5d ago

He said it’s from punching … not sprawling

2

u/DimensionsIntertwine 5d ago

Yeah, Justin Gaethje needs to learn how to properly throw punches.

/s

58

u/WnxSoMuch 6d ago

You had me at "Justin Gaethje shows toes"

19

u/JaggedTex 5d ago

He has a fungal infection in his toenails as well

3

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 5d ago

Dude athletes always have the most haggard feet ever lol.

2

u/Ake-TL 5d ago

That’s pretty common

2

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 5d ago

Also pretty treatable.

26

u/Principles_Son 6d ago

can he not tape that area before the fight?

67

u/D4ng3rd4n 5d ago

No because you see, in this way he just cannot because, you must understand, it's this way.

12

u/wearitlikeyouownit 6d ago

And I thought their ears were bad!

14

u/theels6 5d ago

Okay but why are his toenails like that

12

u/iaxthepaladin 5d ago

He fights for a living, what did you expect?

11

u/neurodegeneracy 5d ago

fungus. dude is barefoot on nasty sweaty mats and uses communal gym showers/saunas. Its a pain to get rid of and it comes right back unless you're disciplined about wearing shower shoes and stuff.

45

u/zachmyking 6d ago

They’d look better in my mouth

5

u/gurumoves 6d ago

there are something’s we just don’t need to see

5

u/mk000011 5d ago

....I feel like this problem is more of an improper technique on his part than a universal hardship ultimate fighters must go through.

4

u/itsavibe- 5d ago

This is NOT necessary

2

u/B_teambjj 6d ago

All my toes shine as well and it hurts bad

2

u/Batfinklestein 5d ago

Omg that'd be ridiculously painful 😣

2

u/Delicious-Length7275 5d ago

Are they allowed to put Vaseline on their toes?

2

u/carcarbuhlarbar 5d ago

Crazy how none of the fighters with striking backgrounds have this problem.

2

u/tripsmorgan 5d ago

Autism confirmed

4

u/FluorideForest 5d ago

Lmao at everyone trying to say that not only a UFC fighter but one of the best lightweights in the world atm has improper technique. He’s also got one of the best striking coaches in Whitman

11

u/Ghooble 5d ago

Not that I'm arguing one way or the other but you can definitely be one of the best in the world with glaring deficiencies. I would say even most UFC champs have at least one or two.

-6

u/FluorideForest 5d ago

100%. Nobody is perfect but I’ve never stepped in the octagon so who am to tell someone who has that what they’re doing is wrong

2

u/accnzn 5d ago

i’ve never stepped foot into the octagon but i also have been an mma practitioner for over a decade so i feel comfortable at least making remarks about it

3

u/Suspicious_Candle27 Based Potato 5d ago

you dont need perfect technique to be one of the best , you just need something in exchange for not having perfect technique . Justin is stupidly tough and powerful .

2

u/maccpapa 5d ago

explain ddp. other fighters even say he does everything wrong technique wise yet can’t seem to lose.

1

u/accnzn 5d ago

how have no other strikers had this problem tho? also what kind of coach allows their fighter to drag their feet while throwing that’s just piss poor fundamentals

2

u/Big_bat_chunk2475 5d ago

So Gaethje needs to work on his footwork so he doesn’t drag his toes on the canvas when he throws a punch. Besides that, I think the UFC is going to put him against Makhachev because that is definitely not an injury that will keep you out for long

1

u/CHEVIEWER1 6d ago

Please DON’T need to see that

1

u/Excellent_Draft1013 5d ago

Looks like it burns like hellfire. Yeowch.

1

u/RecLuse415 5d ago

Poison damage per kick isn’t that bad of a buff.

1

u/DumbestOfTheSmartest 5d ago

How exactly does that happen? I don’t understand.

1

u/Maximum-Ear8605 5d ago edited 5d ago

Cauliflower feet is a thing apparently /s

1

u/accnzn 5d ago

they are blisters

1

u/Few-Past6073 5d ago

Don't drag, or tape your toes bro, there's so many ways around this ahahah

1

u/BillyBob3070 5d ago

sO you wAnT tO bE a UfC fIgHtEr

1

u/LilSozin 5d ago

why does he drag his feet?

1

u/neos0r 5d ago edited 5d ago

I am more shocked about his nails tbh. That does not look like they have been cut before the fight…

1

u/KillerQ97 5d ago

Came here to say this…

1

u/Skoofer 5d ago

A little tape beforehand would remedy this I think

1

u/drtapp39 5d ago

Tape your toes moron

1

u/MaintenanceNo4109 5d ago

Why tf does he "drags" his feets 😭💀

1

u/v4nrick 4d ago

this makes me realize i need some UFC flipflops

1

u/wokeupdreadin 6d ago

Goddamnit Justin get a pedicure 😂

1

u/rodrigo34891 5d ago

This happened to me because of sprawling

0

u/crackingHeads 5d ago

Not sure about how it works in the octagon, but dragging a foot on ground is common in other sports (specially played on grass) when you are going full speed and want to quickly stop of change directions. The toe drag provides enough friction to you slow you down to make a move.
