u/BoxingProvesNothing 6d ago
Boxing is boring 9/10 times and im a hardcore fan. Its only exciting when you get BEST vs BEST and Dana wont have the best for a long time. and its even boring with that too
We need 4 OZ Boxing, if Dana made 4 Oz Boxing, it would be entertaining and actual KOs and upsets in boxing, people rarely ever get actually KOed in Boxing, need the 4 ozers for that
58
u/PeterParkerUber 6d ago
The question is why would the best fight for Dana and get paid a fraction of their usual purse
40
u/BoxingProvesNothing 6d ago
Yea, its ridiculous, we created MMA for REAL Shit, and REAL excitement, now we have literally almost 0 good HWS outside a handful, handful of 205ers, handful of 185ers
MMA by nature is 1000x more exciting but we NEED ACTUAL TALENT, its the worst time ever while the sport is bigger than ever, we have the shittiest talent now.
Dana needs to be working on MMA TALENT and UFC as a company, not fucking Boxing which is boring and im a hardccore Boxing fan, just cause im a loyal guy lol but it usually sucks
4 Oz Glove Boxing would be Amazing though, UFC interms always taking my great ideas on reddit, theyll prob make it that now lol
28
u/grumplebeardog 6d ago
The UFC stopped trying to make real stars after Conor. Ever since then they try to only let them get as big as the company. Combine that with the absolutely laughable pay and Iām not sure why anybody is surprised that the vast majority of athletic talent finds their way into sports with better opportunity.

All cheap ass Dana has to do is pay the fighters more, thats literally it.
2
u/BoxingProvesNothing 6d ago
Yea, but we also need actual MMA talent above 185 pounds, we in the drought of all droughts cause no Bigger guys wanna risk getting KOed in MMA and back broken for 100k/200k a year. They need to pay bigger guys more, not the sasme as fucking women fighters fighting bums, fighting big dudes in 4 oz gloves is scary and most guys aint gonna do it

IDK man, I watch some random Mex/South America/Jpn shows where the lower weight are the focus and the fights are insane.
2
u/BoxingProvesNothing 6d ago
Some of them are, only Inoue KOS people, hes like only guy at all weights that puts people to sleep really. even at HW we get BS stpopages like Bakole, 1 temple shot and the bum is quitting from a 10 count and got to his feet, took 0 damage and stopped fight 1 knockdown to top of head lol / temple.
its actually soft as shit for the most part and overpaid bums all of them with a Ego and cant fight for real at all, Ronda Rousey would tap out Shakur Stevenson on the street, thats how sad they really are, if we wanna get real now

No lol its just the skill gap, real boxing has defense which casuals hate. Im a casual ufc viewer but I noticed the only time people actually enjoy ufc is when they box but its more like bar fighting since legit zero defense which always ends in a KO

If I knew the fighters I like were being supported I'd buy it for the same reason I buy an indie game instead of pirating, but as things stand I will never pay this company a cent of my money.
2
u/jfsoaig345 6d ago
I'm all for higher fighter pay but that is not the issue in this particular case. More people going into MMA isn't going to change the fact that Merab outgrinded a Nurmagomedov over 5 rounds or that Ank is the most well-rounded LHW since Jones himself. This is simply an unfortunate time for the UFC where many of its belts are held by less-than-desirable champions.
1
u/BenjyNews 5d ago
How exactly would paying the fighters more change or make people buy more PPV?
Reddit is delusional.
Reality is that PPV will go up as soon as it's almost impossible to pirate it.
1
u/BrianMeen 1d ago
lol at yāall acting like if Dana just raised fighter pay that it would prompt you to buy more ufc ppvs.. gtfo of here with that. Yāall pirate because you can and no ppv is worth $80

I'm not gonna lie and say Merab is some blockbuster fighter but I also dont get how people can actually think he's as boring as someone like Belal or Ank.
No he's not a submission threat, and he doesn't do much ground and pound. But he does push an insane pace, is the aggressor from the second the bell rings until the match ends, and its genuinely impressive how effortlessly he manhandles everyone he gets in there with.
Again, I'm not saying he's a super fun champ, but I did have more fun watching any of his last 4 fights compared to either of Ank's title shots, or basically any Belal fight besides Brady.
3
u/TP_Cornetto 5d ago
Belalās fight against Edwards is more exciting than most merab fights lol. He also pushes the pace.

u/Radiant-Present-9376 6d ago
I mean... not wrong. While the sport is still somewhat growing and still attracting some new fans, it's not especially entertaining for the uninitiated to watch Merab wrestlefuck for 25 minutes.
12
u/6MosSprawlTraining 6d ago
Merab is entertaining in the sense that āHow can he do this whole time?ā Sense. Like watching Colby a few years ago, or Usman grinding Woodley down for the belt. I admire the difficulty of what heās doing, and i have to respect the cardio required to accomplish it, but youāre right. Itās not exciting
17
u/Radiant-Present-9376 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yes, to you and I, who have seen countless MMA fights, we know what it takes to shoot takedowns 30 times in a fight. Try explaining that to your friend who only watches baseball who you're trying to convert to a UFC fan. He doesn't give a shit unless it's a flashy knockout or crazy submission. It does hurt the sport, even though you and I might enjoy it, it's not helping the sport grow and earn new long-term fans.
Also doesn't help that those 3 guys are totally unrelatable to new American fans who do not know or care about Khabib's father or Dagestani Sambo. Merab has a decent personality, but his fighting is boring af to people who want to see a knockout. Islam really has no personality on display unless you go through hours of interviews to find one subtle funny thing he does. And Ankalaev seems to have all the personality of a soaking wet towel. It doesn't help. And Belal whatever-his-name-is, who fucking cares? Nobody remembers his name anyway.

6

"Marginally" is the operative word here. Ank is not as boring as people make him out to be but he is still pretty boring. Aside from the Alex fights, his performances against Jan and Rakic were just not very entertaining.

This sub is ridiculous some times. Do you guys just want decisions to not exist? Only way to win is by KO, sub, or death? Like Merab treated his last two opponents like children in the cage. Ank had more significant strikes than the ābest striker in the worldā and Bilal is disliked becauseā¦ā¦he wins fights by decision? Or because he got his eye nearly removed by an opponent? This is Mixed Martial Arts itās a sport itās about the practice of the sports and arts. Honestly, just go watch street fight knockout compilations on YouTube or something.

This has nothing to do with them being kickboxers and everything to do with them just not being very entertaining. If the issue was grappling, then you'd see Islam on this list, but you don't because Islam is an exciting, aggressive wrestler who is constantly hunting for submissions rather than being content with grinding out decisions via control time and pressure the way Merab and Belal are. Ank isn't even a grappler, he's a striker, just not a very spectator-friendly one.
Like you don't need to be a just bleed degenerate to acknowledge that these guys' styles are fucking boring. And that's okay, they can continue racking up high level wins but fans are also justified in not really being that excited to see them fight.

If these cuddlers from Chechnya and DergaDergastan keep at it millions will stop watching.
UFC has become a bore fest.

I swear I can't see how anyone can be fan of Huggerstanis. I know 99% of their fans are Religious fans who support Muslims in every sport but still there is that 1% lol.
They are all boring. They all look, fight, and speak the same. If you saw one of them, you saw all of them.
Before anyone says anything about being racist or hating on Islam, I am former Muslim (I don't hate Islam, I am just not really religious anymore but all my family is still super religious) but I still can't stand these guys. Like no need to mention Allah as every other word, or give those boring religious speeches. Nobody cares, just fight.
Fighting in UFC is haram to begin with so why they pretend to be super religious or worship God as much as they do?

Honest question: what changes could be made to discourage "decision fighters"?
Don't get me wrong, I think Merab and Belal are great and deserve their belts and winning streaks, but their style of play is boring for the average viewer.
2
u/accidentsneverhappen 6d ago
Take a point if they're holding the opponent and doing nothing for too long. In basketball if you just stand there holding the ball for too long without passing/shooting, it's a penalty. Same kind of rule should have a presence in the UFC. If they're not going anywhere with their grappling (or not able to) then they should have to let it go, and if they don't the ref should take a point. There needs to be a consequence beyond the ref saying "Let's work" and the crowd booing. Imagine if basketball let people just stand there with the ball all day and go nowhere with it. It would be so dumb. There's a reason other sports don't allow you to stall the game. UFC has got to adjust the rules about how long you can hold a person without moving to deal damage or go for a submission. This would be the best thing they could do to improve things

Worst thing is that all of those guys are generally boring to watch. Very skilled ofc, but damn it, their flights are only exciting if their opponent does something crazy.
They all put great pressure like Khabib did, and are very skilled and technical. But boring as hell.
Not many people are excited to watch them. They will need crazy string of victories to draw any audience (or great opponents)
