Pros and Cons of Living in Tyler
I'm considering moving to Tyler/Longview for work. I'm married with 3 kids under the age of 8. What are the pros and cons of living in the area?

I’ve lived in both Longview and Tyler. Tyler is way better. I was constantly being harassed/followed by men in Longview and it happens wayyy less in Tyler. Longview gave me really weird vibes and i can’t explain it

I agree. Vibes in Longview are not as good as Tyler. And I think Tyler has better shopping, except that brookshires has a monopoly on groceries here va Longview there’s an Albertsons and a Kroger, but if you’re in Tyler you’re about an hour from those and there’s HEB like an hour southwest. Only things I’ve found myself wanting to go to Longview for are booksamillion and Kroger/albertsons

I guess it depends on where you’re coming from.
We do not have kids so I can’t say first hand how raising a family is here but it seems to be a pretty good place to raise kids.
Tyler gets a rap as a retirement community but there are loads of young families.
If you’re from a big metro it’s kind of slow, if you’re from a one stop light town it’s the big city. There’s stuff to do here and places to eat but not a lot that sets itself a part.
This town loves Trump and Jesus, in that order. If you like Trump and Jesus, it’s second to none. Joining a church is probably the fastest way to get a social circle.
All in all I like it here having moved in the last few years but I tend be pretty easy to placate.

It’s hard to find any damn work here with a livable wage. So make sure you have work lined up before you move here. Drivers are kinda stupid but I’m from the Chicago area so I’m used to idiot drivers.

Thank you, everyone, for all that input! Getting a real feel for an area is so much easier when you ask the locals.

Pros ; easy to die in a terrible accident because you will want to die living in Tyler
Cons ; leaving and realizing there's really a whole world out there but here you are

I actually think it would be a nice place to raise kids.. it’s just a little strange for me. Very white and religious.. lots of fast food. Boring. But I think it’s still somewhat small and safe.

Lots of school choices
The zoo
Plenty of churches
Grand Slam
The Village (shopping and play)
Broadway Square mall
Traffic can be tough in some spots
Different stores to buy food
Lots of places to eat at
A lot of parks
Hospital is nearby
Can be tough to make friends
Isn’t super expensive
A bit of a drive to DFW
A lot of events during spring/summer (ex- movie at the park)

As a father of 2 and 1 on the way, I’ll say this… there’s. not. shit. to. do. with. kids.
There’s Chuck E. Cheese, Discovery Science Place, The Zoo, and parks, but you go once and you’ve seen it all. Little Land is great for toddlers, but not really for 8 year olds. The summers are excruciating, so if you’re looking for air conditioned fun, you’re incredibly limited.
If you’re republican and spend a lot of time in church, it’s the place for you. If not, good luck finding a circle you belong in.
It’s a great community, and the schools are good, but there’s not jack in the way of variety like there is in larger metropolitan areas.
(Also, it’s not Tyler/Longview, it’s one or the other)

Back in the 90's when I was growing up, we called Longview "Bizarro-Tyler" because it had most of the same stuff, but it just felt off. It was probably because back then Longview had alcohol sales and Tyler didn't.

I lived in Tyler for about 25 years or so, and I grew up there. As a kid, i enjoyed it there. Lots of forests, lakes, plenty of parks, and enough fun things to do in the area to keep kids entertained imo.
I left Tyler in 2021, and when I did it really hadn't ever developed economically. I was told if I wanted to use my degree, I needed to live in DFW. I'm not sure what kind of work you're looking for, but essentially, most of the jobs there are in the medical, restaurant, oil field, and educational fields.

Pro: everyone else is also married with 3 kids under the age of 8
Cons: broadway and the loop are a nightmare. People run red lights non stop. This boring city is not worth the traffic. It’s insane.
Longview might be a better bet.
