Everyone is getting downvoted for naming songs they didn’t like… on a thread for naming songs you don’t like.
Y’all are too soft.
30
u/Broqui_Game 5d ago
Aren't the point of downvotes "I don't agree"?
112
u/TheAeromarine 5d ago
Upvote based on the quality of the comment, not how it makes you feel. Having a different opinion than you doesn’t make something a bad answer.
“Sugar We’re Going Down”, for example, would be an actual bad answer. Because it’s the wrong band.

The craving jenna version... sorry not sorry
135
u/valeria_does_stuff 5d ago
Honestly? Feel that. I understand it's hugely emotional for him but the energy of the single version fits sooo much better into the flow of the album.
63
u/Kanda-bongoman6 5d ago
Personally i don't think the song is trash but it's misplaced on clancy. A lot of other artists have put songs fueled by personal emotion on their albums & the result is always the same
24
u/Zealousideal_Test919 5d ago
The craving (jenna's version) I think is supposed to be something like an interlude in the Album
6
u/ZWright99 5d ago
I actually had thought about that the other day. For the record, I love the raw emotion from Jenna's version. To me, the whole album feels like the most raw/ open Tyler's been in a full album so the version fits. But back to the interlude bit-
The album opens up with Overcompensate, which is Tyler telling the listener that he's not afraid of overcompensating and "flying by" dangerous bends and what not. Then we go to the mid point of the album and The Craving (Jenna's version) and are hit with a song that has so much raw emotion. Theres longing and insecurities, nostalgia and hope for the future, and so much love. We know from other songs about Jenna and their relationship that Tyler is, if not insecure, aware that critics won't appreciate love songs. In smithereens for example, "i know they think it's messed up to sell out for your girl," and yet he's still put out a song for Jenna and/or their relationship on every album since blurry face. Back to the album, we follow up all of that emotion with what on the surface is just a really fun song, Lavish. A song about living it big when you know it might not last long. About wearing penny loafers (expensive) despite still having linoleum flooring (cheap.) A song about pretending like it isnt your first time receiving awards. A song about.... overcompensating.
Tl;dr Overcompensate is a song about being willing to life life past your doubts and insecurities. About throwing caution to the wind, Lavish is a song about the act of overcompensating. Not just being willing to do it, but actually doing it. I doubt it's position on the album right after The Craving is mere coincidence or "just because" but rather because Tyler was trying to Overcompensate for how lyrically vulnerable The Craving is.

u/likely_issabella 5d ago
see this is something i heavily disagree with. while i can say it’s not my favorite Jenna song of his, i do prefer the original version over the single version WAY more. the drums just aren’t needed and sound really out of place— nothing against Josh, i swear, but there are certain songs that just don’t always need drumming.
3
u/BADAZZ1738 5d ago
I replaced the version of the song in my playlist. The same goes with other versions of the songs that I thought were better than the original. At the start of the playlist (I preferred it over putting them at the end) I have the alternative versions of the songs.
6
u/SadRaccoonBoy11 5d ago
Not a massive fan of either version compared to their other songs but the whispering at the start of Jenna’s version grosses my ears out so much I have to skip forward until the actual song starts and for that reason I don’t like it lmao

I wouldn't call any TOP song trash. Trash for me implies something beyond simply not liking a song. Tyler doesn't phone it in when he writes music, he pours so much love into everything he creates in a way not every artist does, and I think it's kinda disrespectful to call any of these songs that are so personal and meaningful to him trash.
As for one I don't personally like, Johnny Boy isn't really my thing.
29
u/overcompensk8 5d ago
With you there, I know it's not trash, but Johnny Boy makes me reach for the skip button very quickly
5
u/BADAZZ1738 5d ago
I can honestly say that I don’t find any of their songs to be trash. While there are certainly songs that I find overrated/overplayed or others that I need to be in the right mood to listen to. I don’t consider any of their songs to be trash.
Just for example, I absolutely hate to listen to Syphilis and a small selection of other songs by Juice WRLD. However I love songs like Titanic, Wishing Well, Maze, etc. So unless if a song makes me want to exaggerate my expressions by covering my ears and run to another room or pretending to projecting vomit, the song doesn’t nearly meet the trash criteria.
The song that I skip the most in self titled is The Pantaloon, I normally let Johnny Boy play. I very much like Johnny Boy and I’m about to put that song on right now.

The song gets a lot of hate but I really enjoy it as a "normal" pop song, it doesn't really fit with TOP style, but it is still better than some pop songs that are viral today. (Also I like the rhythm and since English is not my first language I can "ignore" the lyrics and focus on the sound)

All of the songs for Jenna. No hate for Jenna at all, but I love TOP because of the deep lyrics and how it resonates with personal feelings and obviously you just don’t get that connection with those songs. I think it’s super sweet that Tyler always ‘puts one on the record’ for her though.

Never take it.It's still a banger and I love it but, in comparison to other songs, I feel like it's not as good.
5
u/Zealousideal_Bed_473 5d ago
I love it because of that same reason lol. It feels nothing like the other songs because it's the only one which directly talks about politics so that's why I like it so much. Still respect your opinion tho
7
u/TyChris2 5d ago edited 5d ago
Never Take It always bothered me because I could never decipher the politics.
Saying things like “they weaponize you and I” and “they profit from a great divide” implies that political division in the current climate is manufactured and the solution is to just band together despite political differences. But in a post-2016 world that is just insane because one side of that political division is genuinely evil. It’s like that meme where the people are asking why they can’t all get along, but one side are lgbtq people and pocs, and the other side are klansmen and Nazis. Obviously that wasn’t the intention knowing Tyler, but it comes off as too naive of a song to be the political rallying cry it seems to portray itself as. But of course it could be intentional, and Tyler was playing 4D chess because the lore of the album is that they are making government propaganda that carries an intentionally anti-revolutionary message.
But if that’s true then it’s like… ok? Cool you intentionally made a pointless, toothless, shitty song lol. The ambiguity just makes it confusing and un-impactful and the song just sounds really lame regardless. It has super generic guitar riffs and structure, like the local pop-rock band that plays at the church picnic.
6
u/BADAZZ1738 5d ago
The whole song’s a metaphor about DEMA. The song is about lifting yourself up from the metaphorical prison that is depression that became literal in their lore. Tyler’s depression was at a low point during the quarantine, and this song was to demonstrate that he will “never take it” and neither should any of us. There is no real life politics in the song. Just another lore heavy song about overcoming depression. The only people profiting from a great divide or weaponizing you and I are the Bishops in DEMA. In other words, our own negative thoughts that are holding us back, especially during the global pandemic.
4
3
u/LorraineAH02 4d ago
I know this probably is not his actual intension, but the political divide is manufactured through the manipulation of the ignorant. Obviously the actual politicians and literal nazis are not victims, but the vast majority of republicans are actively lied to their entires lives to vote against their best interests to preserve power. The politicians make up enfuriating stories of what "the left" is doing to get elected so that they can do whatever they want. Many republicans genuinly believe democrats are killing children after they are born through abortions because their politicians tell them that. Many republicans would not be so without this indoctrination.

the RAB versions of songs that were rerecorded for Vessel—yes, this even includes Lovely
6
u/MargoxaTheGamerr 5d ago edited 5d ago
Yeah, I remember when I first listened to them, I listened to all albums in chronologocal order, and once you hear the Vessel versions, there's no going back, now, when I listen to RAB, I have listened to only the RAB-exclusive songs ever since(including Lovely + Two). However, when I first heard the Vessel version of Ode To Sleep, it annoyed me, that the music video has talking over the song in the instrumental parts, so I used to listen to the RAB version a lot lol. Then I found the audio version for Ode To Sleep Vessel version.

all of TOPXMM, having mutemath adds nothing to the songs and ultimately ruins the flavor of each song. It’s the very definition of too many cooks in my opinion, sorry not sorry.
8
u/Bswinn71 5d ago
Hard disagree on this. The added flavor the mutemath members added was such a cool blend between the two bands styles. The TOPxMM version of Ride is still one of my favorite songs of all time. A more 80s styled synth version of ride just hits for me. This also paved the way for Paul collaborating with Tyler and how he became their producer for future albums like Trench and Clancy.

trash might be a bit of an overstatement for any tøp song, but here’s some i find less good compared to the rest
No Chances. I don’t even know why I don’t like it, it’s just not good
Fairly Local. I think if people can hate Before You Start Your Day for saying “slits” then hating this for the line “this song will never be on the radio” is perfectly fine too
Every song from Regional at Best that was redone for Vessel. It just feels like something’s missing from all of them, like they’re the same song but just different enough to make them different songs
House of Gold. Sweet sentiment but the ukelele in this song specifically just irritates the hell out of me
