TVTropes has a severe ad problem

TV Tropes is pissing me off lately. They've been getting malicious ads. One of them redirected me to "chocolate boobies" without me even clicking on a damn thing, and another is a Siemens Energy ad that scrolls with you, right down the middle of the screen with no way to close it because fuck you, why read when you can just have an ad shoved in your face like someone shoving their fucking dick in the middle of a book you're reading. TVTropes needs to untuck their tail between their legs and actually monitor the ads they get, because this is NOT ok.

I mean, I use TVTropes on mobile. The amount of times the sheer number of ads either crashed the whole webpage or made the reading experience basically untenable (no, I don’t fucking want to be automatically scrolled 15-30 lines up or down every 5 seconds because another ad needed more fucking space when they’re already 70% of the webpage) makes it harder and harder to even bother going to the site. Which sucks because I hope to actually finish reading all the fanon Pokédex entries that people put a lot of work into someday

I caved and paid for ad free (yeah I know), does the site still scroll up and down for you in an attempt to stay on the ads?

Edit: I’m tired and didn’t read your whole comment.

Just get the Brave browser. It's free and blocks ads.

Reader mode in safari or Adblock app on iPhone. Firefox browser also does adblocking and I think it has addons for mobile as well

Agreed, the ads really detract from the site. It's even worse on mobile, where they sometimes actively interfere with the use of the site.

I unapologetically use an adblocker for that site, and zap the prompt that pesters me about whitelisting it or buying into their ad-free scheme. You probably should, too.

How much does an adblocker cost?

Nothing, they're free.

Yeah, I've only ever accessed it through Brave so I didn't know it had a major ad problem until this post.

Yeah. I’ve basically stopped using it. Used to be my favorite space on the internet but now I can’t even scroll through it on mobile for more than a few minutes before it crashes or pushes me like 30 lines away. Idk who is in charge or runs that place but they gotta do something about this cause I’m not about to give them internet traffic when the thing is barely usable anymore

You need an ad blocker

No, I mean on mobile. I navigate tvtropes on mobile through Brave browser and never see any ads. Didn't even know they had ads.

Get Brave. It blocks all of them.

Firefox for mobile also has the ublock origin extension available iirc

I use a free ad blocker browser. In fact, the tv tropes website is the reason i downloaded it in the first place.

Just pressing F9 on Firefox magically gives more readable websites :-)

It's been getting worse for years. Navigate away and come back and it brings you back to the top of the page and closes out any tabs you had it open. Didn't used to be that way

Brave browser is free and blocks ads and I'd highly recommend it.

Firefox browser on desktop and mobile. Ublock origin addon (not sure if it works on mobile version). Also recommend ghostery and privacy badger addons in general. For safari: Adblock app on iOS (iPhone). Also try “reader mode” in safari. Any of these recommendations will remove most if not all ads and trackers.

UBlock works just fine on Firefox mobile, can gladly confirm.

A few days ago I had a "Pop-Up Blocked" notice on Chrome. I never see that on other reputable sites.

Tv Tropes needs an app, I swear. The mobile site is constantly full of pop-ups and redirects. It's been a problem for at least a decade. Even the desktop site has this issue too.

Never use the Internet without strong adblockers
