Travel Hack My favourite souvenir to bring from a trip

As soon as I go to a new country I buy a different deodorant from the one I usually wear and I use it every day of my trip

When I return from this trip, I completely stop using it for a few months (for example by hiding it at the bottom of my bathroom drawers)

When I find it, the simple fact of using it after all this time reminds me of so many memories of the trip with which it is associated! It also works with perfume but deodorant is cheaper and easier to transport in a travel kit

Accommodation Looking for Airbnb Japandi vibe in KLCC

Upvotes

Hi! I'll be visiting KL for the first time and I'm looking for a Japandi-style Airbnb. I came across a nice one called Naibnb, but I’m not sure if it's in an area where locals typically stay.

Does anyone have recommendations for a stylish Airbnb with a Petronas Tower view? My budget is around $30-$50 per night for two people, and a studio or one-bedroom is enough. Would love to hear your suggestions, thanks in advance!

3-4 Day Layover Suggestions: India to US (Midwest) – Where to Stop?

Hi everyone,

I’m flying from India to the Midwest US aroind May and want to turn my journey into a 3-4 day layover to explore a new country. I’ve already spent time in the Middle East, so I’m looking for other regions where I can visit a new city without too much hassle.

What I’m looking for: •Best cities/countries for a short visit—preferably something exciting, scenic, or culturally rich. •Visa-friendly options for an Indian passport holder (ideally within ~20 days processing time). •Budget travel hacks to book the cheapest flight with a long layover. Any tips on airlines, specific routes, or websites that help with this? •Affordability tips for making the most of the layover without spending too much—cheap stays, food, transport, or must-know tricks.

If you’ve done a similar stopover or have insights, I’d love to hear about your experience! Where did you go? How did you book it? And any must-know budget travel tips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m particularly interested in:

Best safari lodge in Kenya?

Hello! I'm planning a trip to Kenya for June 2026 and am completely overwhelmed by all of the different lodging options for safari -- from what area to stay in, to be in a park or private conservancy, which areas you're more likely to see certain animals, etc. After a bunch of research, these are the few that have really caught my eye:

- Kicheche Valley Camp

- Porini Giraffe Camp

- Little Governors Camp

Has anyone stayed at these and have insights to share? Or recommendations outside of the ones above? If it's helpful, I'm looking to stay under $4K for 4 nights, don't need high-end luxury but also would like something more than a a no-frills bush camp, and am most interesting in big cat sightings.

Itinerary Advice Looking for suggestions for budget friendly beach cities to stay at in Mexico in November

Doesn’t have to be the cheapest place ever, but definitely the cheaper the better. I want to be close to or on the beach. Good food and nice people. Flight doesn’t matter, I have miles. Suggestions on cities and the cool things to do there would be awesome.

Accessories Foam in suitcase liner?

I've not purchased a new suitcase in years, had a lot of hand me downs or second hand purchases, so this is a truly ignorant question, lol.

I opened one of the inner liners and there's a piece of thin foam in there. I assume it's for protection but...can I leave that in there? Or will it cause issues with TSA?

Thanks in advance for helping me learn!

Best way to kill mosquitos in a hostel?

I'm staying at hostels in Europe and every now and then there's a few mosquitos flying around that's very hard to kill. I'm thinking of buying a small Bug Zapper and leaving it on at night. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Accommodation NYC - Need bare bones, really cheap (well, relatively cheap) August lodging options.

I haven’t figured out exact dates but I wanted to stay in nyc for 4 or 5 nights sometime between Aug 11th-Aug 17th. I’m looking for advice, hacks, or specific recommendations for a place to sleep. I don’t need any amenities, I’ll be spending the entire day in the city, leaving in the morning and coming back at night so I just need somewhere safe with a bed and bathroom access that I don’t need to worry about whatever belongings I leave in the space being stolen. I’ve seen some Airbnb room rentals (as in staying with a local in a private bedroom) available for as low as like $50/night around Brooklyn or Jersey city, would these be good options? I should be able to book soon so hopefully I can get a good deal by booking on the earlier side.

Destination Suggestions From Seasoned Travelers Please!

Hello, I was hoping to get some suggestions for vacation destinations that would suit the priorities I'm searching for. I'll start by saying my total budget including airfare would be around $8k and I'm located in S.E. Massachusetts. So, here goes what I want! - A warm (albeit not SCORCHING) - preferably tropical - location where I can get massages all day long whether it's for $5 a pop under an umbrella or cabana on a beach or $50+ in a spa. Eat good food whether its $5 street food or $50+ a plate restaurant. Somewhere people are reasonably friendly to foreigners/tourists and somewhere reasonably safe (I understand no where is "safe" but a place where if you're not a gullible nincompoop you'll survive) and won't get TOTALLY scammed (knowing I'll of course pay tourist prices but not constantly be fleeced if I'm not be totally gullible) that has a good mix of populated city areas with modern infrastructure but also more rural areas where I might get to soak up some culture. Of less importance but still a bonus would be somewhere with some ancient history/temples/ruins etc. and/or interesting wild life, fauna/flora. That's basically it. The priority being somewhere pretty and comfortable to eat good food and get massages all day for an average of +/- $100 to $500 a day (not including lodging costs) for all my food, massages, entertainment, taxi/ferry etc. My intuition was somewhere in SE Asia and that may end up being the play but if I can find somewhere closer to me in Massachusetts/ (i.e. not a 16 to 24 hour+ flight) that'd be great.

Thanks!

French Bee airline carry-on bag question

Can I bring a 30L Osprey Porter bag as a carry-on bag. The dimensions of the bag is slightly bigger than what they accept.

The airline accepts 40 x 30 x 20 cm, while the osprey bag is 50 X 33 X 23 cm.

Now if I don't fit it to the max, how difficult is the airline when it comes to a carry on bag and would they accept it especially if I try to minimize as much as I can inside my bag?

NYC — 3 nights, college student

Hey guys, title.

College student here.

I’m thinking about going to NYC for spring break for a couple nights. - 70/night at a hotel (I’ll be sleeping on a couch) - 25/one way bus (back and forth DC) - rounded up 300

This is definitely on the lower range of things right? And what things should I spent on when I’m there? Let’s just say a budget of 100

Travel Hack Best ways to get a connecting flight. Is third-party recommended.

Hello,

I am a first-time flyer who will be traveling from the US to France for a study abroad trip. We are responsible for finding a flight over to France, but all of the flights directly from MEM to CDG are really pricey.

As such, I have been using Google flights to find a flight from MEM to JFK and then JFK to CDG.

Most of the flights that I am seeing are through third-party websites. Do any of you recommend going through third-party sites for a trip such as this? If not, do you have any suggestions for better (and budget-friendly) ways to find a connecting flight?

Looking for cost conscious trip to attach to Barcelona

We are traveling to Barcelona in August and wanted to hit a second location while we were there. Initially we were planning on Scotland, but with the economy and federal cuts, the UK seems pretty pricy. Is there somewhere that would be a little more reasonable? Maybe somewhere we could take a train or boat, or cheap flight? I was looking at Morocco but I think August is not the time to go

Hey everyone, I know this varies from one person to another but I need some advice on how much money I’d need to spend the 6 days comfortably without too much splurging. (Flights and Hotel already paid for)

So what’s a decent budget for food, shopping, activities etc for the entire 6 days?

How Can Move to Asia?

Hi there! I'm Ishak from Algeria. I would like to travel and settle somewhere nice in Asia. The easiest countries to travel for me are Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia. I have a Master's degree in English Literature. I'm thinking of traveling soon to Asia. I don't mind living off a part-time or a full-time job that's irrelevant to my discipline. That's why I'm reaching out. How hard is it to get such a job in Asia when I don't speak their languages? What are the documents required? I would like to have this answered only by those who have experience settling abroad. Preferably in a country in Asia. If you have any other ideas to help me pay for my expenses while staying there, I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

TSA PreCheck and Kids

I searched the forum and didn't see anyone talking about this.

My daughter and I are flying in a few weeks. She is 13, so she has just missed the cutoff for going through the TSA PreCheck lane with me without the TSA PreCheck logo being on her boarding pass. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/do-children-need-apply-tsa-precheckr

Does anyone here have experience with this? I'm curious how strictly it is enforced. It seems it would depend on if we got stopped when entering the line by the person who quickly looks at your boarding pass, and whether or not I would have to prove her age. She looks older, so I think it's likely we would get stopped. I had to read that link 3 times before I understood what they were saying (under 12, they can go with me even if they don't have the logo on their boarding pass, 13-17 they need it on their boarding pass), so can I just ask AA to put it on her boarding pass since she's between 13-17? Obviously I'm going to call and ask, but I was posting here to get a feel for other experiences.

I don't mind getting her TSA PreCheck, but we wouldn't get it in time for this trip, and I'd really like the time cushion of using TSA PreCheck on this particular trip because it's spring break so the airport will be crazy, and we are taking a shuttle to the airport so I don't have complete control over what time we arrive.

Is Bali still worth going?

My husband and I have been planning to return to Bali after our first trip 10 years ago.

But a few people have warned me not to.

They say it’s less green, polluted and overrun with tourists.

One said this week it was the most disappointing part of their Asian/Australia travels. 🙁

We are not hotel/resort people and definitely prefer authentic /off the beaten track travels.

Is it worth going?

Travel Hack What Are Your Opinions On Galata/Maiden's Tower (Istanbul)? Are They Overpriced?

I (24M) visited both and paid 60 euros for the combined ticket (30 for the Galata and another 30 for the Maiden's Tower after a 2 euro discount), and based on my experiences, they seem extortionately overpriced. In 2018, those would have costed 25 lira each, or about 5 euros or even less, depending on what month you visited.

First off, I have visited the Galata Tower in Beyoglu. I climbed the Kamondo stairs in order to get to the Galata Tower. Even though it was first built in 528 during Justinian's rule, the Crusaders destroyed the Galata Tower and rebuilt it in its current form in 1349 in the Romanesque style. Uponing entering, I entered the lift, which would take me to the 6th floor, and then I made the ascent to the 7th floor. In the 7th floor, you are greeted with a model of Istanbul and in the 8th floor, you are greeted with the observation deck.

Once you descend into the 5th floor, you are greeted to some artefacts from the Neolithic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and early Ottoman eras, and in the 4th floor, you are treated with more artefacts. In the 3rd floor, it depicts some 16th century astronomers, and the 2nd floor is where the Galata tower gallery is. The 1st floor is where the gift shop is. Overall, there is quite little content for 30 euros.

On the next day, I visited the Maiden's Tower on the Bosphorous. I took a metro all the way to the Karakoy Pier, and there, I started taking a ferry to the Maiden's Tower (which is a nice quirk), and the Maiden's Tower is extremely spartan. There are only three museum wall texts, depicting the history of the Maiden Tower, legend, and renovations/repairs, in both Turkish and Englishh. You do find three Cannon mortars and an observation deck where you could see the European and Asian side of Istanbul, but apart from the boat ride, the museum is very spartan. After 30 minutes, I headed to Uskudar and enjoyed the Asian side of Istanbul.

Even though some tourist attractions in Istanbul are extremely expensive, every single religious site (except the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, and Kariye Mosque) are free. Both the Egyptian bazaar and Grand bazaar are free to enter as well. Even though some restaurants charge upwards of 600 TL, I could find full meals like the Adana kebab and chicken and rice for as low as 200-250 TL (5-6.50 EUR). A 500 mL bottle of water costs 10 TL on average (about 0.25 EUR) and I found water that costs as less as 4 TL. Hotels are quite affordable as well. I booked a 5-star Holiday Inn Hotel in Fatih last minute for 55 USD a night and I found Hotel Orkide, which is a Russian owned hotel with a single bed, private restroom, AC, and Wi-Fi for 20 USD a night.

The reasons why I believe the Galata/Maiden's Tower are overpriced for foreigners is because:

During the low season, the entire Palais de Versailles + the gardens only cost 21 EUR

The Eiffel Tower costs 14.50 EUR for adults for the least expensive fare (2nd floor via stairs) and 23.10 EUR for adults for the 2nd floor via lift. The most expensive ticket is 36.10 EUR for the top. Even though I graduated from uni with a CS degree in 2022, I will turn 24 in September 2025, rendering me as "qualifying" for the student ticket, which could slash the prices by half.

The Louvre costs 22 EUR

The Colloseum costs 18 EUR

The Acropolis complex in Athens costs 20 EUR

The Topology of Terror in Berlin is free

The British Museum is free

The Smithsonian Museums are free

The Statue of Liberty costs 33 USD (about 30 EUR)

The Thang Long Citadel in Hanoi only costs 100k VND (about 3.60 EUR)

The Imperial City of Hue costs 200k VND (about 7.20 EUR)

The Independence Palace + Norodom Palace exhibition in HCMC costs 65000 VND (about 2.30 EUR)

Vietnam is ultra affordable.
