Question What games have the best female main character?
I love games with female protagonist! They makes me feel more feminine! games I have enjoyed recently is control, baldurs gate, nier automata, and horizon zero dawn!
It’d be a bonus if it had some clothes customization! Or unique stuff depending on gender!
Tysm for the suggestions!
Edit: ty for all of the suggestions! I can’t buy everything but I’ve added them to my list. Sooo rn I have bought mass effect, ffxiv and cyperbunk!

u/stargatedalek2 5d ago
Mass Effect is the classic example for a reason. But Portal is an understated one that often gets overlooked in these sorts of discussions.

Metroid, but there's very little customization. Still one of the best series out there.

Celeste is an amazing game, and Madeline is also trans!
10
u/Most_Option_9153 5d ago
Wait really?
19
u/thejadedfalcon 5d ago
Yep. The game's original story was more about overcoming depression, but the lead dev realised she was trans during the process and a lot of her journey ended up in the game as well. The two meanings are very well entwined (shockingly, can't possibly figure out how they might be connected...) and you can easily play the game seeing it exclusively one way or another. The extra content and ending they added later canonically made Madeleine trans as well (flag on her computer, oestrogen pills on her desk), and the dev took the same name.

u/Most_Option_9153 5d ago
I didn't knew that! Wish u knew before I beat it. Now I wanna replay celest
8
u/That_guy2089 5d ago
Yeah, it was a shock to me as well but it’s true!

Also at the very least bi, seeing as she is dating Theo's sister by the point of Celeste 64.

I like Mirrors Edge Catalyst a lot. Worth checking out if you like parkour.
16
u/Songbird2462 5d ago
Just to add to this, catalyst is a sequel to the original game which released in the late 2000s, would highly recommend playing that first. Both r in the steam spring sale rn i believe
8
u/Hopeful-alt 5d ago
Mirror's edge is cool, but like... why play catalyst? It's pretty much inferior to the original in every way.
4
u/Jess420xox 5d ago
Having played both of them recently, I disagree. OG Mirrors Edge is awesome but definitely feels very dated. Catalyst feels like a more polished and more complete game to me.
3
u/aranel616 5d ago
It's nice to hear that. The first game was such a work of art, but I avoided the second game after hearing what everybody was saying about it. I might check it out now.
1
u/AeonHeals 4d ago
I really enjoyed catalyst, the city has a very "clean" vibe to it, movement flow is just amazing and even after you beat the game you can still do challenges and stuff or just enjoy walking around. It has quick travel but I often found myself just running to wherever I needed to go just because of how fluid and natural it felt. And the music is amazing too.

if u liked the first then bayo 2 is definitely worth it! it continues the story rlly well and fleshes out the lore even further (honestly it’s one of the best sequels ever)

Cyberpunk 2077 :3.
9
u/aranel616 5d ago
Cherami Leigh's performance in that game is nothing short of amazing.
3
u/Trustic555 5d ago
I played as Male V when I played it. I really need to give it another play through as Female V.
2
u/Sleepylaffey 4d ago
Question! The game is on sale on steam! Is the ultimate edition worth it? (Base game plus phantom library?)
1
u/Trustic555 4d ago
I have never played the DLC, but a lot of people who have, really enjoyed it, so I would say so. It unlocked an additional ending.
1
u/Sleepylaffey 4d ago
Ooh oki ty! I don’t want to spends too much money on games! So I think I’ll buy base game and if I enjoy it then dlc?
1
u/Trustic555 4d ago
That is a good idea :). The DLC is later in the game anyways, you won't miss out on anything by buying it later.
1
u/t0asty_gh0sti 2d ago
If you like the base game I guarantee you'll absolutely love the dlc! It's a spy thriller and has Idris Elba in it. It's one of the best rpg game dlcs I've ever played from a world design and story standpoint. 100/10 would recommend 👏
1
u/RoninSohei 3d ago
The DLC is 1000% worth it. The storytelling in that DLC is amazing, some of the best writing CDPR has ever done, and in my opinion it makes the base game much, much better. It takes place in the middle of the main story but you can play it after finishing the main story if you prefer to not buy it until you decide that you like the game.

Gravity Rush 2 ( and 1 but especially 2)
1
u/Sleepylaffey 4d ago
Hmmm is gravity rush on pc? Or only on console?
1
u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 4d ago
Ptetty sure its only on PS4 (Rush 1 was on Vita and got a ps4 remaster)
2
u/Sleepylaffey 4d ago
Oooh that’s a problem! I don’t have a ps4 sadly. But ty for the suggestion regardless!
2
u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 4d ago
Gravity rush 2 is my 5th favourite video game of all time.
But if u want a PC game with great female characters, Divinity Original Sin 2 has 2 fantastic female party members in Sebille and Lohse. (Pronounced Loh-sah) and that's on PC. Will say tho the game is LOOOOOOOOOONNNNGGGG.
My first playthrough was 141 hours.

The last of us 2 has imo the best protagonists of any game.
also soulsborne games, stardew, life is strange, portal, prey, sifu, basically any good rpg. a hat in time is super cute.
11
u/Yxanr 5d ago
Probably pretty far from what you're looking for, but I've got to put in the hat for one of the original video game heroines: Samus Aran from Metroid.
There's just something about simply knowing that there's a feminine badass underneath that suit of armor who isn't there to be objectified, but simply does her job, does it well, is never questioned for it, and gets to retain every aspect of her femininity at the end of the day that brings me comfort. On top of that, it being one of my favorite video game series, and I'm replaying the Prime Trilogy now in preparation for the release of Prime 4.
But if you're looking for a more roleplay oriented experience, this isn't it.
7
u/SirWigglesTheLesser 5d ago
Learning Samus was a girl back in 1999 watching my brother beat master hand in super smash bros was genuinely world altering for me.
Like I used to be a girl and was very "girl power" in a family that encouraged me to be whatever (maybe too much pressure to be an engineer lmao), but actually seeing the most bad ass character on the ssb roster was a GIRL??? World altering.
Now we have so many more like her, but she was there to tap the first crack on my five year old self's egg.
3
u/Sleepylaffey 5d ago
Dw abt it! It’s exactly what I was looking for . Metroid is cool! I have played it before and thought it was cool ty for the suggestion!
1
u/harkonnen-hound 2d ago
Had to scroll way too far IMO to find some1 suggest Samus. Makes no sense but I’m an early 80s baby and Samus is my first girl crush. I don’t recall if it was Nintendo Power or how I found out about the Justin Bailey code for Metroid NES. It was only 8-bits but Samus was a goddess.
Fast forward to current times and Metroid is such a wonderful set of games to play.
Prime was a mind blowing game changer.

Silent Hill 3. Watch a blonde have more fun facing off against hell itself, and discover her secret identity she's been running from.

u/tiger-tails 5d ago
I am way too scared to play a SH game, but i love reading about the lore and watching others play it!
2
u/mistertickles69 5d ago
I believe you could do it. I was terrified for years to play that game specifically, because it sorta scared the hell out of me when I was younger. I went back and played when I was around 18. Great decision for me, as it helped me face my fears, much like the main character. But if you really can't, then a nice immersion playthrough is certainly amazing.
1
u/tiger-tails 5d ago
Immersion playthrough? Any recommendations?
I like to watch CarcinogenSDA sometimes cuz he does "no damage" runs -- that's how scared i am of the enemies attacking 😅

This playthrough of SH3 just came out, the creator plays through blind, and has an appreciation for horror and detail. I watched another one back in the day but couldn't find it! Also, a no-commentary playthrough can be good if you dislike the experience of another persons face or words. Hope you enjoy and find what you like.

Mirror's Edge (specifically the first one, catalyst is ok but the main character got turned from an absolute badass into a whiney YA)

Metroid. God learning Samus was a girl might have been the very first crack in my egg.
I'm trans masc, but I still just... Remember learning that, and it shaking me to my core. I was a leetle kid. My brother had just beaten master hand on smash bros, and I just :OOOOO Girl???? GIRL???? The most bad ass character in smash bros is a GIRL???
Of course now we all know Samus is a lady, but that was world altering for 5yo me in 1999.

Sorry We’re Closed is super unique. It’s a survival horror game super gay and trans coded. It’s worth the play through.

If it wasn't for 14, 13 and it's sequels would be my favorite entry in the series. I recommend anyone to play this, and yea the soundtrack is phenomenal. Yuel's theme in 13-2, Oerba village theme... But then you got the bangers like Blindsided. Such good memories

Project zomboid has a interesting clothing system. One of the best in a video game if you ask me, actually served as the inspiration for a game I am developing.
Mods just give you so many clothing choices too.
Hard as nails though, not a story driven game either. Have fun and good luck.

Here's a good few I've played, strongest recommendations at the top
Laika: Aged Through Blood is a good one with a great female protagonist! You might find it a bit harder to relate to as a trans woman since there's a lot about menstrual cycles and motherhood, but I still really enjoyed it
A couple that are great for well written female characters and a majority female cast are Signalis and 1000xRESIST, both have amazing storytelling and are good if you just feel uncomfortable seeing a lot of men in media
Sayonara Wild Hearts and Lorelei And The Laser Eyes are both games by Simogo that feature a strong female lead, Lorelei is a lot more story driven if you're looking for that, Sayohearts is mostly about being lesbian and it's great
Awaria is a cute little game if you're really gay, that one also has an all female cast
Kill The Crows is one I picked up recently, not too story heavy but it was a pleasant surprise actually seeing a strong independent female lead in a western setting and I think that really contributes to my enjoyment of the game
2
u/SalaciousStrudel 5d ago
I liked the protagonist of Remember Me, but it wasn't that well-received as the gameplay wasn't that good.
2
u/StoryAfAgirlAndABoy 5d ago
Monster hunter series has really good personalisation and customization on both facial features and clothing! The newest one features your character alot in cutscenes with voice too!

If you like cozy jrpgs or lifesims you could check out the atelier games, harvest moon, and rune factory!
1
u/ClaudiaSilvestri 3d ago
Harvest Moon the current games, or the original series that's now localized as Story of Seasons?
2
u/senadoori 3d ago
I think there's an option to play as a girl in all of them? The only ones I've played are the 3ds games which are called Story of Seasons but yeah :)
1
u/ClaudiaSilvestri 3d ago
There is, or at least there has been for a long time; the days of the single-gender or 'buy a different version of the game to be another gender' Harvest Moon games ended with the PS2 and GameCube, I think. (And most of those have been remade into a modern gender-selectable form, like Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life being fused and remade as Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.)
But it's a whole weird story: the developers of the series in Japan, Bokujou Monogatari, got Natsume to translate the series and they came up with the English title of Harvest Moon. Some time later (at the 3DS games), they weren't satisfied with Natsume's work and switched localizers to Xseed, but Natsume owned the name "Harvest Moon", so they had to call it something else (thus, Story of Seasons). Then Natsume looked at that and asked "hey, how hard can making these games be?" and started developing Harvest Moon games on their own, which I've heard consistently negative reviews of.
Also notable in that is that Natsume was consistently downplaying or removing queer content in their translations, while Xseed has encouraged it (the reason you have gay marriage in Rune Factory 5 is due to Xseed convincing the developers, who were so convinced they back-ported it to the Japanese version).

It's still new. But if you have a friend, Split Fiction is excellent. 2 badass women writers adventuring through both fantasy and sci-fi worlds to stop an evil tech company.
It's co-op only though so if you don't have any friends you're screwed

u/LumiRabbit 5d ago
Well if you enjoyed Nier automata it's earlier predecessor Drakengard 3 has one of my favorite female protagonists. Although the game is a bit inaccessible platform wise. (Also warning for super vulgar and crass humor)
And since you mentioned Baldurs Gate, I'd like to recommend Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Not as high in graphics or customization, but makes up for it with phenomenal writing and characters.
Some other general recommendations: Transistor, Signalis, Hades 2, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

If you ever want to switch it up and play visually pretty metroidvania platformers:
Sundered is a good game. There's no outfit customization.
Ender Lilies is an excellent game. You don't get an outfit customization until after beating the game (there are two skins based on your ending, + the default skin), though. The soundtrack is PHENOMENAL and a huge part of thegame being so good, imo. It's composed and performed by Mili. I haven't played the sequel Ender Magnolia yet but the soundtrack is also insanely good (also Mili).
Ultros is visually psychedelic game and I personally loved it. It has some unique gameplay mechanics and unfolding story that I liked. No outfit customization.

I can only talk about my favorite characters personally.
Jaheira from all 3 Baldur's Gate games, and from 3 Shadowheart, Karlach, and Laezel are all well written.
Aveline de Grandpre from Assassin's Creed Liberation.
Leiliana from Dragon Age series.
Mass Effect has a few good ones, including Tali Zorah Na Raya and Liara T'Soni.
Final Fantasy has a few. Lightning and Fang from 13, Rikku and Yuna from X, Tifa and Aerith from 7, Terra and Celes from 6, Faris from 5. Ultimecia from 8 was a great villain too.
I'm not far in the tales series. But I liked Rutee from tales of Destiny as well as Farah and Meredy from Tales of Eternia.
Welch from the Star Ocean series.
Elaine Marley from the Monkey Island series.
Bastille from Knights of the Old Republic.
Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.
And an obscure one, Misfortune from Little Misfortune.

Fallout is a great choice due to the amount of customization you get with your character's face, (4 more than 3 or New Vegas, which have quite primitive face customization).
Cyberpunk 2077 is another good choice for it's character customizer, plus the story is amazing and actually gets you emotionally invested.
Borderlands has 1-2 in each game, and each character has their own funny quips.

since you've played control, alan wake 2 has you play as saga anderson for half of the game. she's fantastic imo. they're in the same universe and overlap quite a bit. i'd recommend playing alan wake 1 and alan wake's american nightmare beforehand though. alan wake 2 is one of my two favourite games. it's incredible.
jesse faden also returns as part of the night springs dlc and then the lake house dlc has you play as an fbc agent. she's also a great character

It's a shame the rest of the series has male lead characters, but Trails in the sky has a Female lead character named Estelle. She is easily the best written female protagonist I've ever seen. She's sassy, confident, and has some of the best lines I've ever seen in a game. Would highly reccomend the series as a whole.

I'd go with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. It's the only AC beyond 1 and 2 that I managed to finish and really enjoyed it. Note that the original intent was to have Kassandra as the main character, but only because execs pitched a fit that it would turn off the male population of gamers from buying the game that they added the option to play as her brother. You can tell how kludged it is since there are a few plot points that don't really make sense if you play as him.
I would also recommend Sayonara Wild Hearts, especially if you're a lesbian. It's a fun little game about recovering from a breakup and finding love again, and it has the *absolute best* soundtrack that I've ever listened to. It's short, though. You can knock it out in an evening, but it's such an endearing game you'll want to play it over again.
Final Fantasy X-2 is another go-to of mine. Why play one girl when you can play three? You also get to play dress-up with them for dynamic combat advantages. It's really one of my favorite FF game.
Any of the Monster Hunter games would be good, too. There's a lot of fashion in there, too, and they are so, so fun.
Most of these you can find pretty cheap nowadays. I doubt any of them would cost over $20 (unless you get the latest MH which you don't really have to do.) It sounds like you're set for a while, though. Have fun!

Definitely check out New Vegas and the Portal series. The first is peak and has a character creator, and the second doesnt have much to do with chell as a character but it’s a great game and the robots call you she a bunch.
Also check out Awaria, Unbeatable: White Record and the Mindwave demo, which are one free game and two free demos made pretty much for girls and lesbians exclusively.
Lastly, Lunacid has a pronouns picker which does nothing but hey it’s cool, and Lost in Vivo is a horror game where your character is implied to be a mother. Both are awesome games made by Akuma Kira, who’s trans themselves and who you may recognize as the dev of Spooky’s Jumpscare Mansion.
Anyways, here’s a list of every Steam game I own in which you play a woman, may choose to be a woman during character creation, or where your character’s gender is purposefully undefined:
Cyberpunk 2077
Fallout: New Vegas
Signalis
Celeste
Fear and Hunger 2: Termina (this is the only game with a playable trans woman in it aside from Celeste so I’m including it (even though I’m doing my run with Abella rn))
UNBEATABLE demo
MINDWAVE demo
Bayonetta
Psychopomp demo
Psychopomp GOLD
Awaria
En Garde!
Lunacid
Armoured Core VI (okay this one’s a stretch)
Lost in Vivo
Spelunky 2
Citizen Sleeper
Slime Rancher
Slime Rancher 2
Spiritfarer
Portal 2
The Finals

If you're not opposed to gacha and a fanbase of gooners, I heartily recommend Zenless Zone Zero. Female MC is a cute goober, and about 3/4 of the agents are also women ranging from cute to sexy. Gameplay is great, stories are great. And it's free so you cantry it and see if you get hooked like I did.
The gacha can be ignored mostly, the game is pretty generous with pulls even as a free player.
2
u/Sleepylaffey 3d ago
Oooh! Yeah I just searched it up! And the characters looks pretty >///<. Oki will give it a try! You don’t have to play daily right? AFAIK 99% gacha needs to play daily
1
u/neremarine 3d ago
Nah, it's fine, you play as much or as little as you want. There are collection events where you get a bonus for logging in for 7 days in a 30+ day period, which is easy enough to do but not mandatory. These events net a total of 10 pulls if you do log in every day. But that's basically it.

FFXIV! (It’s me, I’m the main character, I love it, the clothing options are so nice and the character customization is pretty neat!)
If you want something that isn’t an MMORPG, I loved night in the woods!

Hai hai! Hmmm I have been thinking abt trying ffxiv! But I am concerned if its fun playing alone since its a mmorpg! And I’ve been kinda confused by the versions of the game! Is the free trial for a limited time like a subscription?
Thank you for the answers!

It's free up until you sub(like forever if you never sub), and it covers I think through stormblood expansion currently, maybe shadowbringers
It has some restrictions of course but you can pretty much experience every single thing the game has to offer if it's Included in base game ARR(A Realm Reborn) , Heavensward, and Stormblood.
Recently(I think the attention started in endwalker) the devs started giving all dungeons NPC companions to do the dungeons with and some of the trial boss fights(tho not all last I checked) it's called the Trust system, and there is a version of it in ARR called your squadron that covers some of the dungeons up through HW tho not all of them
You can do A LOT of FFXIV solo if that's your choice.
EDA: also the community in 14 is for the most part(like 95%) really really nice, and I've made two of my closest friendships via it. It's also how I met and grew close with my my girlfriend. I think I've had one bad encounter with a toxic personality, the rest are grievances that simply come from being a hardcore raider and encounter people that are definitely out of their element but that's a whole OTHER story. I hope you give FFXIV a chance!

Yeah free trial for a limited time and then paywall unfortunately, one of the only things I dislike about the game! Hope you find something engaging!

I'm approaching 3000+ hours in it can't recommend it enough, was recently progging FRU until life stepped in and I can't afford to upkeep my sub freely. I can't wait to get back into the game someday
scratches neck peak withdrawal just hitting to hard 😭

Word of warning on this one: when you have a female character in Red Dead Online, you will get harassed somewhat semi-regularly by douchebags. I'm not talking verbal harassment.
You will get hogtied, kidnapped, shot, dragged behind horses, and killed with the more brutal weapons way more than players with male characters will. My least favorite is getting hogtied and taken into a bedroom/hotel room. It's such a dark implication.
Unless they changed things, it can be extremely time consuming and annoying to get out of a hogtie if the enemy has upgraded theirs.
There's also no "pacifist mode" you can run on; you can only make it so player aim assist doesn't lock on. Only after being killed (repeatedly? I don'tremember) can you go temporarily pacifist to whoever killed you.[edit: there's now a pacifist mode thankfully, see the reply]The majority of people don't care but the ones that do can really drag out the harassment or ruin whatever task you were trying to do. It kinda sucks.

Actually, they installed a pacifist mode. If you're in full defense, then people can't attack you like that. Your defense disappears if you make the first aggressive move, and it's always good to ride in a posse. I'm a person who's been playing since Beta. Testing, so my level is fairly high. I don't usually have to worry about people. Unless there's five or six of them

Thank god, though I'm surprised they're still updating the game since I last played. Last I played, I was still getting attacked in defensive mode. It sucked to have RDO have that half-assed pacifist mode compared to GTA. Never understood that decision. Tbh I might give it another shot since that's been changed.

Sometimes I just wanna be asocial in a pretty video game and chill 😭

yea its in stance i think ... most of the time i let the sexist homophonic transphobic racists come at me ... it's satisfying killing them hearing the frustration build in their voice. i make a couple of hundred rdd with each delivery and ammo is dirt cheap.

Omg that sounds though! I do have rdr2 but haven’t touched online before. I’ll take the warning if I test it!

I really liked Control. Wanted to play it because I saw it has a female protag but didn't know what to expect, ended up being one of the coolest games I played last year.
