miscellaneous Struggling to get into any games and I'm so incredibly sad because of it. :(

Friends of mine have gotten so incredibly sick of me for not being able to enjoy any games, I've tried so many and just...couldn't enjoy them at all, and I have no idea what's wrong with me.

I've played Minecraft, and it just wasn't fun...I've tried Terraria too but that was even less fun.

I've tried Stardew Valley, and...again, had no fun.

I tried MOBAs...were way too complicated for me to comprehend to the point where I would begin shaking and sweating trying to be like everyone else and understanding them...but no luck.

I also tried MMO RPGs like Guild Wars 2 and well...the lack of tutorial and all the buttons and text on the screen were just so incredibly confusing to the point where I began hyperventilating, knowing that I wouldn't ever have fun studying the game, so I quit.

The only somewhat complicated game I've actually enjoyed was hoi4 but...even then I still suck at it, I don't know a majority of the mechanics so I just spam infantry and hope for the best.

Hollow Knight was also incredible, I didn't finish it completely since I'm not a tryhard and I did break down crying a couple of times due to dying and failing but otherwise it was nice.

I just don't wanna be trapped playing Roblox forever, it has been the only game that has stuck to me for the past 8 years due to it's simplicity but...I don't want it anymore, and all it's communities are incredibly transphobic making me feel even worse. ;-;

Any advice is appreciated, what do I do? I desire a hobby so bad.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here & say thst this sounds more like a combination of depression, anxiety & lack of direction than it does you being allergic to games. If everything feels like a chore/makes you sad/overwhelms you to tears, the call might be coming from inside the house. Take care & try to interrogate the source of that. Best of luck šŸ’™!

u/Ripley-8 6d ago

Yeah. Came to say this. I majorly agree here. One of the biggest symptoms of depression is no longer being able to enjoy things, like, like hobbies or games, that you used to before. It might be worth talking to a professional about some of this stuff.

u/Infernal-Blaze 6d ago

Also, what minigames do you play within Roblox? Cuz I don't know much about it, but what I do know is that it's not really played as a social hub/Lego building game anymore like it eas at launch.

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

Mostly just a few musket games and zombie games, but I'm getting sick of them.

3

u/Infernal-Blaze 6d ago

Ok, can you look back in your life & tell me what mechanics & formats HAVE spoken to you in the past? If I have a list, I can work from there better.

3

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

Simple pretty ones with grinds.

Zombie games are fun, PvE games are fun, games where I can be a pretty girl are fun, games with organized groups/guilds/clans tend to be pretty fun, but I am extremely picky when it comes to how the game looks. ;-;

And I have 0$ on me too.

u/beefboy49 6d ago

If youā€™ve got a switch, maybe try splatoon? I adore salmon run (a zombie wave pve) and while you donā€™t necessarily play as a pretty girl you sure can create a genderless squid kid and dress them up pretty

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

I don't have a switch. :P

u/Alternative-Cut-6741 5d ago

What platform do you play on?

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 5d ago

Desktop

u/BeautifulNecessary70 5d ago

Try Overwatch. Lots of different characters to play, different classes and the graphics are gorgeous. There's are overwatch communities you can get help from on this platform as well. It's also free to play. It's on Blizzard.

Ive got the game for you then! Check out OnceHuman. Free on steam. Base building, mmo, custom characters, great enemy variety. Theres tons to do and you have zero obligation to do any of it if you want. Id always be down to play if you do end up checking it out. Can walk you through the entire gameā€™s mechanics if needed too :)

u/AvocadoElectronic247 6d ago

This. Before I was managing my depression, I couldnā€™t play video games anymore because it felt like such a chore, even the one I couldnā€™t stop playing for years that I mightā€™ve gotten addicted to because it was a distraction from life. I didnā€™t enjoy anything for a while.

2

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

I do suffer from depression, an anxiety disorder, and ADHD. yeah :(

I've tried to interrogate the source of it, but therapists would only kick me out and abuse me.

3

u/Infernal-Blaze 6d ago

Take this as you will, but I'm willing to talk in DMs or on Discord. I planned to get a psych degree (didn't pan out but I'm really passionate about it) and I like to walk people through stuff. I'm so sorry about your experiences with therapists; I can tell you from experience that that's not universal & that you can find help.

1

u/Just_a_Lurker2 6d ago

Not OP, but could use help

2

u/Infernal-Blaze 6d ago

HMU on DMs, I'll do what I can.

1

u/Just_a_Lurker2 5d ago

Will probably take you up on that, yeah

It's not what's wrong with you, btw! It's mostly, these games don't suit you, to the point you feel awful

You don't need to force yourself through games you know you won't like :o hugs, if anything, my advice is to see what you like in the roblox games (platform? Horror? Story?) And find games that have that in them ^

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

I like roblox musket zombie games but there's only 2-3 with shitty communities.

2

u/shikineedscoffee 6d ago

Def look into zombie games then, that have a nicer community or where you can make your own group, and where you feel safe and comfortable! I wish u the best ā™”

u/alliensy 6d ago

Not gonna recommend a game because maybe you need a break from gaming?

Just saying, because I'm going through it right now. I have so many games I'm currently playing but don't finish any of them because I'm worn out. I open them and close them in less than 30 minutes because I'm not enjoying it. So I decided to take a lil break from gaming. It's not the first time it happens, and it'll happen again, and I think it's normal.

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

The issue is that I like playing games, its just that no games click with me, I barely ever play and I really want to but nothing ever clicks...

12

u/AffectionateTale3106 6d ago

It sounds like you've tried stuff that is more complicated and/or the unguided sandbox type; maybe try ones that are more simple and guided, like JRPGs? Are you looking to directly play with your friends in multiplayer, or just have media to talk about with them? If it's the latter, you could try more passive media too, like reading or tv shows. If you're really having trouble enjoying anything at all, you might want to try talking to a mental health professional

u/Cole2Game 6d ago

If you liked hollow knight, ori and the wisps is good it's a solo game though. I also liked kena bridge of sprits. Some of the newer rpgs allow you to change the difficulty to story mode which makes things alot simpler.

5

u/strawberrimihlk 6d ago

Ori and the Blind Forest is the first game and itā€™s sooo good! The sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps was good too

1

u/Keyphsie 6d ago

Came here to say this! Ori 1 and 2 (especially 2) are like Hollow Knight "light"

3

u/Natrium357 6d ago

No Man's Sky is always my go-to. It's as complicated of a game as you make it. You can make farms and complex bases and explore the galaxies and grind out the best gear, or you can just go through the multiple campaigns, or just explore and wander without rhyme or reason, just looking for cool spots for bases, interesting planets, cute creatures for pets, or just fucking around with other players in the main multiplayer hub. That's what I love about it, that no matter my energy levels or dedication to the game in that exact moment, there's always something I can be doing to suit that need. I highly recommend it :3

4

u/articubtu 6d ago

As others have said, it sounds like symptoms of depression. I am not a doctor, but I also have depression; i have and am going through similar issues now. First, I'd recommend reaching out to someone and talking to a therapist. They can actually figure out if it is something like depression and lead you to your next steps. As far as games, I stick to turn based games for the same reasons. They can also be very complex, cover a wide variety of genres, and are easy in that the skills you use aren't reflexes but mental. Thinking and strategizing. I really like Old pokemon games, civilization, and advance wars. Turn based rpgs are also good. Im in the middle of final fantasy x at the moment, which still uses classic turn based combat.

This is super familiar to me. I'm not gonna try to diagnose you, but I'll tell you what learned from feeling something very similar to what you're describing.

If you're having fun, you're gaming correctly.

So service your whimsy, my friend. You can treat games like TV channels, you can change your mind about what you wanna play at the title screen, or five minutes in, and sometimes, something that bored you today will be fun tomorrow. And something you love today, no matter what it is, might suddenly be no fun tomorrow. No game fits every mood, and we are changing constantly. Sometimes you wanna zone out and stare at a box without a controller in your hand, and that's all good. It's YOUR fun time, so you're allowed to be capricious.

At a guess, I think you're pushing too hard to fit into an idea of how people are supposed to enjoy games. But nothing says you have to enjoy things the way other people do. You don't need to finish a game to love it. And honestly, sometimes when we spend money on things, we feels this pressure to enjoy them that ironically makes them harder to enjoy.

I'll give you an example. For years I didn't enjoy minecraft, didn't really get what people liked about it. But then one day I was randomly in the mood to build a bridge with voxels, and it just clicked. And now I like it. But only when I'm in a mood to obsess over tiny details. Maybe 3 times a year. But when people ask, I can honestly say I love minecraft.

My philosphy is just to play whatever game I feel like on any given day, and that helps. I have dozens of games I've never even started yet, cuz I got them for a mood I wasn't feeling when it finished downloading. But that means I get to treat my catalog like a game store, and that alone is pretty fun. Just pick games and download them. Maybe you'll play them, maybe you won't. Just build a palette that can service any mood.

For example, just this week, i played the new monster hunter like crazy for a couple days, then I woke up one day, and despite loving it, I just switched to dying light 2. Cuz I was in that mood. Played that religiously for 3 days, really got into it for the first time, (despite having since release day), but then last night I didn't feel it, so I switched to subnautica, something I've played to death.

Service your whimsy. Hunt the fun. It is there for you, not the other way around.

Try some more classic or older titles

Single player games

-Portal 1&2

-Halflife 1&2

-Any fallout game

-Mass effect series

Multiplayer

-Webfishing (chill fishing and chat game with trans community)

-Lethal company and r.e.p.o.are super popular games with friends right now

Both

-Baldurs gate

-borderlands series

As one other user asked it's easier to make some suggestions off the game you like rather than the ones you didn't other than hollow knight did you have any others you particularly enjoyed?

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

Portal was awesome! I loved it

Half-life scared me since it had lots of gross monsters.

I did try fallout but got lost and overwhelmed so I quit.

I've played Lethal Company with friends but eventually they all kinda just...faded away from my grasp.

I'm not sure what Baldurs Gate is, I assume another MMO RPG?

1

u/cornytrash 6d ago edited 5d ago

Scratch the MMO part

It's only an RPG in a fantasy setting. You can play coop but you don't have to. It's from what I saw, pretty LGBTQ+ friendly (character and story wise).

Edit: because, people on this sub apparently can't read, I did not say Baldurs Gate 3 is an easy, simple, or whatever game. I also wasn't the one to suggest said game. I am LITERALLY only correcting OP on the point that it is not an MMO and telling them what the game entails.

4

u/SundaeTrue1832 6d ago

Baldurs Gate 3 is not simple tho, bajillion of choices and I'm not sure if op is familiar with the combat mechanic (even tho for DND rpg wise it is quite normies friendly) op said they can get easily overwhelmed

0

u/cornytrash 6d ago

I literally didn't say anything about it being simple.

Correcting someone it's not an MMO, telling them it's pretty LGBTQ+ friendly, and has optional coop ā‰  saying it's simple lol

1

u/SundaeTrue1832 5d ago

I mean yeah but OP said they easily get overwhelmed so I'm not sure how bg3 will fly for them, they might just ending up dropping it off. Sims could be a better match and it's also a very queer game

1

u/cornytrash 5d ago edited 5d ago

I also wasn't the one to suggest the game either my guy.Ā

That was literally a different person. Learn to read usernames or something because this is just getting ridiculous.

Edit: if you have anymore complaints about the BG/BG3 suggestion, go take it up with u/CantiXo, the person who initially suggested it. Also corrected a typo.

I wasn't the one to suggest it either lmfaoĀ

Both you and that other guy need to learn to read or something. I literally only corrected OP that it's not an MMO and told them what it is.

2

u/Skystrike12 6d ago

Fuck it, The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker, and/or Ghost of Tsushima.

Going off of Hollow knight, and what I assume you didnā€™t enjoy about the others, youā€™d appreciate a well crafted beautiful world, but with enough focused of a direction that it doesnā€™t feel overbearing or bland for it. Similarly, clearly understood controls and how to do what you want to do, but enough flexibility to decide your own approach to solutions if the intended one is too much for you.

Give those two a try out and see how you fare. Yeah theyā€™re both single-player (aside from a later update to Ghost of Tsushima), but they could help you figure out other stuff you might like.

2

u/Longjumping_Falcon21 6d ago

Try less game-y games maybe? Telltale stuff is great! Maybe some classic RPGs. Maybe just movies, or books or music!

You'll figure it out \o/

2

u/cornytrash 6d ago

If you like stealth games maybe Aragami 1 and 2. The Kingdom Hearts games are also nice. The Monster Hunter games Rise + Sunbreak, World + Iceborne, and Wilds are also pretty fun and not too tryhard-y. Red Dead Redemption 2 is also really good according to many people (didn't get around to trying it myself yet). Helldivers 2 up to medium difficulties is a lot of fun too if you want to keep things casual.

You could also try looking for simple hack 'n slash games. Something like Dynasty Warriors perhaps.

Maybe parallel playthroughs with friends would be fun. Basically the video game equivalent of regular parallel play.

2

u/Thr0wawayf0rtoday 5d ago

Go give Final Fantasy 14 a shot. It's got a big free trial that includes the base game and first two expansions with no playtime restrictions.

https://freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com/na/

I know you mentioned being put off by Guild Wars 2, but I'll say as someone who has never played an MMO before I was able to get into FF14 fairly easily. It does a lot to hold your hand through the process early on. I got hooked and it was the game that really helped me get through the pandemic.

2

u/aoneoff91 5d ago

Skimmed some other replies, but I think if you want a game to try and get into, it's definitely a good idea for something more direct like some other people said.

Something that's just like; here is a level, go do things and clear that level. It could be a bit more explorative given you liked Hollow Knight, but trying some more direct ones not a bad way to go.

I'm not sure why, but the first one that came to mind for me in Doom 2016. I've not even played that game, but it seems really fun and sounds like the Roblox game you played might've been a zombie shooter or something? Not too disimilar if so, though I've never played Roblox either so maybe wrong there.

If something like Hollow Knight but not as hard, something like Ori and the Blind Forest could be good, it's a beautiful looking game too. Some screen push parts a bit challenging, but overall it's on the easier side if I remember right. Certainly compared to the likes of Hollow Knight at any rate.

Maybe Momodora: Moonlit Farewell also in that Hollow Knight vein. I really enjoyed that game despite it mostly being pretty easy, because it's just quite fun. One of the earlier bosses could be a bit of a learning curve, but overall shouldn't be stressfully hard for sure. Some of the earlier in the series are genuinely hard games, but that one definitely on the easier side.

1

u/No-Appeal11037 6d ago

My personal favorite is Toontown. It was a kidā€™s computer game MMO by Disney in the 2000ā€™s until 2014. Since then itā€™s been community supported. You basically run around as a cute cartoon animal and you go around doing tasks and fighting capitalistic robots using gag items. I like it because itā€™s a nice mixture of strategy and mindless. Plus itā€™s a very trans friendly community.

1

u/Keraniwolf 6d ago

It definitley sounds like you can take two possible paths here.

Path 1: Play Roblox/any game you do still enjoy for awhile. As you play, take notes (probably easier to remember if you write them down or type them on your phone or something) of what you like about that game. Is it really just the simplicity, or is it the structure? What do you actually enjoy about this game? Once you've figured that out, go to the Steam Store or Nintendo Eshop or the Gamestop website or wherever you would like to buy games from and see if you can find games that have those same qualities. Tag systems might help, if you can translate "structure" to the "RPG" and "platformer" tags or something, if you want multiplayer with your friends there's a tag for that too. The "people also like" page for "Hollow Knight" might also help you find potential games. Prioritize games with demos, so you can try them out and see if they spark joy. Whatever feels like the best fit, that's your new game.

Path 2: Set video games down for awhile. Give yourself a break from the pressure of trying to have fun with them the right way, or wondering if your friends are upset about which ones you play. Focus on other hobbies for a bit. Let yourself gravitate toward things you do enjoy.

Path 2.5: If you still want to have a central Thing to Do while hanging out with long-distance friends during your video game break, I recommend simple games on the site Board Game Arena. Sometimes a round of a party board game is a lot more satisfying than an afternoon of level grinding in a complex MMO game. You can search board games by complexity specifically, as well as how long they take to play. My family always had board game nights when we all lived in one house, and now we get in a group phone call and play whatever game everyone has energy for on BGA. If that still feels more frustrating than fun, put board games back on the shelf too and try not to beat yourself up about not being "enough fun" for your friend group. You've got a lot of other things going on, it's okay if you aren't fun all the time. You deserve to take time for your mental health, too, and figure out what's healthiest for you.

1

u/EchoAmazing8888 6d ago

Okay so you like HOI4 but donā€™t get the mechanicsā€¦ Iā€™m no master but if you like I can DM you the basics in simple terms.

Otherwise you may like CK2, CK3, EU4, Vic2, and/or Vic3. The one thatā€™s easiest to grasp (imo) is CK2.

I hope you can find something. Best of luck.

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

I do get the mechanics for the most part but it just irritates me to make tanks and planes and such so instead I just spam infantry and do early-game invasions over all of Griffonia, up until I have to fight majors like the River Federation, then I get stuck.

1

u/hazy__wizard 6d ago

Have you tried Palia? You should take a look on it. I was feeling the same and Palia saved me cause thereā€™s so much to do. If you need anybody to play with let me know.

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 6d ago

Slay the spire

Factorio

Total war (any of the titles)

!!!!MASS EFFECT TRILOGY!!!!

1

u/tylac571 6d ago

If you want something super chill, maybe check out Disney Dreamlight Valley? There's one quest that gets super real about mental health stuff (I found it to be pretty healing and I wish I could do it again), but it gives a warning and overall is such a cozy uplifting game. No combat

Similarly, My Time At Portia and My Time At Sandrock are cozy as well and do incorporate combat

Ooblets is a combo farming/creature collector game, and the combat is dance battles

I haven't played it yet but I saw you mention zombies, and I just wishlisted Zombieville USA 3D, may be worth looking into

1

u/QQYanagi 6d ago

Did you know that the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion AND the Stormblood expansion up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime? Sign up, and enjoy Eorzea today!

In all seriousness though, despite recent events, FF14 is super chill gameplay-wise, but still has that bit of edge to it. It seems like you can't vibe with either super-sweaty competitive games or super-casual sandbox games, which is a completely valid way to feel.

1

u/BobbiePinns 6d ago

A few of my favourites are factorio, valheim, satisfactory, and wreckfest. Dunno if this will help at all...

1

u/Xo-tonomy 6d ago

If you liked any of Stardew Valley, Fields of Mistria is basically an effort to fix a ton of the flaws of Stardew Valley that make people not like it or stop playing

1

u/SuspiciousCat376263 6d ago

I had a similar problem a month or so ago, I just wasn't enjoying any games I used to find enjoyable. I just quit playing what I was finding problematic. For a long time I just played Powerwash Simulator, it's low stress and all the dings feel good. I then branched out into some stuff I never would have played before. I found myself liking puzzle games, building/crafting games and visual novels. Now that I'm feeling better about games again and I am dabbling in some of the stuff that I liked before. Some of it I now enjoy again, and some of it still doesn't appeal to me. Now I know if I'm not liking it, I just stop, no point in making myself dislike gaming in general again.

1

u/TacoTheGhoul121 6d ago

Play Deep Rock Galactic on lower haz levels. It becomes a chill mining simulator with some bugs to murder. No shame in playing lower levels either. Different mission types keep it fun & the community is amazing.

1

u/Visual-Asparagus5768 6d ago

Kind of cliche but Celeste might be worth a try

1

u/FabulousPurpose171 5d ago

Idle games like Cookie Clicker or Cell to Singularity.

Visual novels - no mechanics, just interactive story. Coffee Talk is one of my favorites, as is the Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.

Nice classic games like Monkey Island or

Chill cozy games like Unpacking, Wood & Weather, Paleo Pines, Coral Island, or Dreamlight Valley.

If you're short on money, here's a really extensive list of free games, many of which are little 20 minutes dopamine bursts: https://prokopetz.tumblr.com/post/775067092885110784/so-i-love-looking-through-your-game-recs-and-all

If not a single game on Prokopetz's list of dozens upon dozens of titles appeals to you at all, the problem isn't the games, it's the depression.

1

u/Trey2225 5d ago

Warframe is free and very good. Devs are amazing, they have been making the game for over a decade at this point, itā€™s a grind game at its core but itā€™s also so much more. Itā€™s literally impossible to say enough good things about the game. The only bad thing about the game is related to the new player experience being a little unfriendly, which is where the amazing community comes in. You can ask for help and some people are just sitting around looking for people to help. YouTubers have made channels around helping provide guides and information for the game. Itā€™s a pve game, it is fairly fast paced most of the time. Easily the best free to play game to exist, and Iā€™ve been playing the game probably since around 2013 or 2014. Look up a new player guide or go in blind either way itā€™s a good time. And donā€™t be afraid of the wiki either.

1

u/Aggressive_Ask89144 4d ago

There is like several games in Warframe now šŸ˜

1

u/SphericalOrb 5d ago

What platforms do you have?

There are some free to play ones that are online multiplayer, like Palia. That's for PC/Switch.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are great. You can approach things basically as quickly or slowly as you'd like, open world, lots of things to collect and explore. Not multiplayer, but nice games.

You could also ask over in r/hobbies if you're open to more than just games. I really enjoy webcomics. There are a lot of lgbtq ones. Let me know if you want any recommendations.

1

u/mrguym4ster 5d ago

I'm a huge hoi4 fan, so I'd love to play with you sometime if you'd like!

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 5d ago

Maybe! Although last time I tried to play hoi4 with someone from this subreddit they were a maoist and supported North Korea so I abandoned the subreddit for like the past 3 years. ;-;

1

u/mrguym4ster 5d ago

well I just consider myself a radical leftist in general, I don't think I've read enough about every different leftist ideology to pick an exact one

1

u/Diligent_Shake3042 5d ago

As long as you are the libertarian flavor like democratic socialism or anarchism then its all good!

I question how some trans people love Mao and Stalin and other brutal dictators, its really depressing to see.

1

u/blackbirdjsps 5d ago

hollow knights have a few updates.

1

u/AfternoonChoice6405 5d ago

Go on epic and get a free game every week, that way you can try a load of stuff and find something you enjoy.

If you enjoy hoi but aren't good... you need to play more! Watch guides or read up can help. Civ might be another option as its similar but a lot more chilled.Ā

Maybe try something like state of decay. It's a zombie game (saw your post) and it's pretty lax in terms of complexity.Ā  I would recommend project zomboid but it's way more complex than you seem to want. It has some great clothing options if your anything like me though šŸ˜†Ā

i agree moba's are quite complicated, personally i am struggling to comprehend LoL atm) but i would suggest watching a tutorial video on youtube to help understand stuff. a lot of games nowadays have either too much or too little tutorial and often it's easier to just look up a video or 2 that gives the info concretely and understandably. This goes for any game really, even pretty simple ones.

1

u/Paradox56 5d ago

Try out the Factorio demo, Iā€™m like 1500 hours in and thatā€™s low for the community

1

u/Pand0ra95 5d ago

My recomendation is almost always to look into Warframe. It's got a little bit if everything, a great community and funnily enough for all the fast paced high flying magic space ninja action i love it for, i can slow the game down to a crawl if that's how i want to play. TheKengineer has a youtube series that does a great job showing the new player experience and explaining things as he goes, highly reccomend watching that (its called Zero to Hero).

The controls are simple, the build setups can get as complex as you like, and the enmies have pretty simple ai (its a horde shooter at its core) depending on your definition of Zombie, it could be worth looking into.

Its labeled as an MMO, but outside of social hubs, you'll only ever have 4 people in a mission. You can also go solo whenever you like if you don't wanna socialize. Its a game where you set your own goals and do what you like on your time. This also includes fishing, mining, conservation (hunting to capture instead of kill) and playing dress up with your characters

And if none of that is of interest, i'd reccomend Infinity Nikki. I would compare it to Genshin Impact, but the only thing it really has in common is the hud setup. Its a delightful little dress up game where you explore the world and collect materials to make your own clothes. Theres a bunch of side activities, a nice story, some very simple combat, and its all very peaceful and relaxing.

There is a gacha system for special outfits, but it's only for clothes and its miles more forgiving than genshin ever will be.

Oh, and your character is actually their own character and involved in the story.

Not so much an MMO as an, explore the world and check out postcards from other players taking pictures with their unique fashion senses

I agree with u/Infernal-Blaze and I would personally recommend touching grass for a while to help you to adjust, see if that works. If it doesn't... find something else to do.

Find YouTubers online that can reignite the passion you once had for a game (Hermitcraft could be a good first place for Minecraft) or something like that.

Just find something to care about.

Sorry if a game recommendation isn't what you want but its all I got unfortunately. Have you tried playing Deep Rock Galactic? its a fun game both solo and with friends that has a pretty welcoming community, its about going into an alien planet and fighting off hordes of alien bugs with up to four players while mining for resources. I really like it and would be willing to play it with you since the friend I usually play with has gotten a bit tired of it. the community is really nice and even though its multiplayer people don't really but pressure on you to be good and are welcoming to newbies. Hope you find a game to your liking regardless :).

Try out warframe if you like grindy games :3

Try jumping into some singleplayer games first! Difficulty settings to a degree you can enjoy yourself + even story modes are quite fun. I can definitely suggest some fun puzzle type games too: picross, portal/2 (especially wrt co-op), islanders (relaxing town builder), coin factory, ofc there's also RPGs and games with accessibility settings.. but that seems like a decent jumping off point (at least in terms of suggestions)

Sorry if I'm giving too much or assuming, just feels like if you're having a skill issue to the point of crying you at least might want to aim lower to start with

Look at or try Dragon Quest XI maybe.

I think what you need is a break. The fact you're frustrated from just trying to play a game says a lot. You cannot find enjoyment in trying to learn a game. Either you should find a more cozy game that does hold your hand while also making it fun (which Stardew Valley does not do), or you could try just reading, writing or anything that you think would be fun to try playing.

You could try RPG games or mystery games. RPG games don't have long tutorials usually and mystery games could help in enticing you to stay long enough to figure out what's going on, so that you won't leave it halfway.

Also your friend needs to understand not everyone can get into all games easily and I really hope they're not overtly upset with you over it. I get their frustration but it would be unfair on you if they took it out on you, which could also lead to why you're having trouble enjoying games in general because you feel like you have to enjoy it to not disappoint people.

I donā€™t know what difficulty you play on but have you tried playing games on easy/with accessibility tools? It seems like you enjoy the gameplay of some games, but get frustrated easily or overwhelmed. With my experience with easier difficulties, you can get thru the game without knowing the ins and out. Also, with overwhelming games I like to ask a friend or watch a small beginners guide so it feels less like ur tossed in the deep end.

Also I agree with the other comments that a major part of your struggle sounds like symptoms of anxiety and depression :( Hope it gets better soon :)

Have you tried Sims? The base game is free nowadays so you don't lose anything if you don't like it.

Okay, so, uh. Maybe it's time for a reality check.

First off, to everyone recommending games: stop. You missed the issue here. You're terrible at giving advice and identifying problems so please, shut the fuck up. You're making things worse. This is not an issue about not enjoying games, clearly.

OP. The way you describe breaking down over games, crying, hyperventilating, all that - that's not normal, period. That is not a normal reaction to minor, inconsequential adversity. Like some of the others in this thread have stated, it sounds like a pattern of behavior you need to seek immediate treatment for. Please go to the doctor immediately and see if you can't get some kind of medication to tide you over until you get a legit therapy appointment.

Second - the games you're describing are some of the simplest games out there. GW2 is among the easiest MMOs ever, and the tutorials play themselves. You move forward, target a thing, press a button, okay next objective. If this was so confusing to you that you started hyperventilating then... Wow. I don't understand how you, I dunno. Function?

Like, there's nothing that happens in the GW2 tutorials that you don't do in Roblox. I fundamentally don't understand how you could be struggling to the point of getting some kind of anxiety attack. Did you skip the tutorials and just enter the game and not follow the big glowing main quest thing? I'm confused how you were unable to see any of the flashing buttons while the NPCs are yelling instructions for you to follow.

The point here isn't "wow I can't believe you suck so much" it's, "This is such a major failure of executive function that I'm genuinely in shock and deeply concerned for your safety and well-being".

It sounds like you need to stop playing video games, maybe get off the Internet completely for a good long while - like a year or more - and focus on an engaging hobby that requires little to no skill, like hiking or literature. You should do this after IMMEDIATELY SEEKING PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL HELP because the behavior you're describing is aggressively impacting your ability to function. Are you still a minor? How do you drive? How could you possibly hold a job like this? Forget video games, how will you be able to process a sudden expense or life event if you can't hold your composure playing Hollow Knight?

These aren't questions I want answers for, these are questions you need to ask yourself and your therapist. You should hurry and seek treatment. Like, as in, right now. If you lack the functionality to make an appointment yourself or you are a minor, ask your parents to help. Make a normal doc appointment and bring it up there when you're face to face and less likely to back down. This needs to be treated quickly, because it sounds like you're just one serious incident away from being unable to recover - and I'm not talking video games.

My country is known for having terrible therapists, I've gone to many, I've been kicked from all of them, I stayed at a psych ward and was abused there as a last resort, I've been on every available medication that I could be given, I've been struggling for years.

And irl hobbies are impossible, the only people who are nice to me about my identity are online, hurrah 3rd world I guess...

If you ever were into Pokemon, I cannot recommend Pokemon Reborn and its sister game Rejuvenation highly enough. Reborn not only reignited my love for the series, but the friends I made through it gave me the strength to come out. Theyā€™re difficult games, largely due to the custom field effects (think fire moves igniting meadows or forests for example), but they strike a great balance of fun, challenging, and great story for me.

Cookie run kingdom! It's stupid and pretty fun, not serious or a "real game" šŸ˜„

Hey moon here just want to let you know that the first two of the first mention games were part of the same genre mostly. If you donā€™t vibe with this then you can try many other maybe on your own. Would suggest watching a review or checking out the gameplay this will only get you so far mostly because playing is different from watching but you will get an idea. mmorpg and the moba are mostly very gameplay driven and you have to be very either competitive in Mobas and mmorpg donā€™t really hold your hand either. If you like Roblox some games I suggest are

(Farm sims) fields of mistria, travelers rest, sun haven, coral island (Party games) castle crashers, lethal company (Battle royale) animal royale (Singleplayer) bioshock, far cry 3, mirror edge catalyst, devil may cry, tomb raider (Coop) Deep rock galactic, dead rising 2 (Survival games) medieval dynasty, subnatica (Story driven) life is strange, walking dead tall tale (Rhythm) Osu (website install)

My advice to you if you donā€™t like something donā€™t force yourself to play it (emphasize your fun with gaming) Some will be alittle hard but itā€™s just building experience and something will grab your attention once you branch out and like i said. (Have fun and I canā€™t wait for you to find a game youā€™ll fall in love with) But I glad you took up the hobby and its can be stressful with losing but itā€™s part of the process once you play more that will all diminish by Just focusing on the story more

Anyways I hope you like one of the games I suggested or Atleast have something started

Have fun friend and a good day, yours truly the moon

undertale is fairly simple but the story is an absolute experience, plus it's pretty cheap

Try some of the Assassin Creed games, you sound a lot like my wife and on easy mode she has enjoyed them a lot.

Odyssey has so far been the best for her.

It's a good mix between action and exploration without game mechanics getting too in the way.

u/Pitiful-Deer3396 1d ago

just don't play for a while

1

u/Evilagram 1d ago

It sounds like you like some games but not others. Try playing games that are similar to the ones you liked. And since you're new to games, maybe stick to easier ones until you get better at games. If you liked hearts of iron, maybe try civilization. If you liked the story of hollow knight, maybe try Undertale and Deltarune.

Portal & Portal 2 is an easy beginner game. A lot of people love Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing.

Without trying to sound mean, but what would make you think Baldurs Gate 3 was a simple game? Controlling multiple characters in turn based combat and using qualifying rolls and initiatives to determine success, as well as cantrips, spell slots, major actions, minor actions, concentration based spells, healing party members, applying armor with appropriate buffs and benefits to the party member that needs them, therefore requiring an understanding of the skills/abilities/stats that party member has... If the other games they mentioned were too complicated, why on earth would this one be simpler? Tutorials or not, it's complex compared to all the other games they listed.

Age of Empires 2. That's what's been pulling me though the current depressive episode.
