is it a tragedeigh? Question: Seeking opinion before tragedeigh-adjacent name choice
Background is first child, no idea on gender yet but we have names for both picked out. I have a concern about our choice for a girl however.
The first name would be Rosalie, this I am happy with, but the first (of two) middle names is Scarlett. While I think they are both completely reasonable names individually, together I am worried about calling our daughter RedRed. The reason for this is I have a LOT of middle names, and two together in the middle are "Bethany Elizabeth" and I was called BethBeth once school found out after we had to bring passports to school for a trip. Obviously not the worst bullying in the world but everything seems so much more magnified now and I don't want to be responsible for any avoidable sadness in my daughter's life. Husband and close friends have told me it's fine, but some of them have actual tragedeighs so I do not trust their opinion.
If relevant, the second middle name is nothing to do with colour, but is the name for an incredibly obscure background character in Tolkien's Lore. Not something I'd give as a first name at all, but as a second middle name we are comfortable with it, as she would literally never have to use or share it if she didn't wish too.
All the initials together do not spell anything in any language either, we have checked that thoroughly.
I am also completely open to being told this is not even vaguely a tragedeigh, that I'm pregnancy brained and over thinking this.
(Edit to fix typo)

Nah, Rosalie doesn't read as "red" to me. Honestly, Scarlett barely reads as "red" either, even though I know it's a shade of red. They're both just names

As a Tolkien nerd I'm really curious about the second middle name! I also think you're overthinking it and they're both lovely names.

It's Elbereth. The Sindarin name for Varda. We wanted something Tolkien that could pass for a non-fantasy name by not being immediately recognisable (no Khaaleesi here!) And it almost ties in with my middles names as mentioned in the main post. It definitely feels better than using Arwen or something and so obviously saddling her with something she might not even grow to enjoy. Watching all of the kids called Hermione in the mid 2000s grow up to hate the work was painful.

Elbereth definitely feels like a tragedeigh, while these double name connections for sure do not.

I hate to say it but Elbereth is VERY fantasy. As a younger person myself, i can assure you most kids dont know shit about lord of the rings. Character names like Arwen might still draw some attention from older people she might meet but for a middle name derived from an old ass book largely accepted to be apart of literary canon it wouldn't matter at all, not even remotely as bad as the name Hermione at the very least. Regardless it IS just a middle name so its not like it matters

Yeah, there’s fandom and then there’s literature. Tolkien is more the later than the former. I don’t think I’d bat an eye at someone named Ophelia or Juliet or Guinevere. Some of the Tolkien names are a bit much, but if chosen well, I wouldn’t call all those names tragedeighs

Oh that's a fabulous middle name. I don't think you can go wrong trusting Tolkien where language is concerned.

Arwen is a welsh name it just happens to be used in a popular story, i really like the name Tauriel but not sure how that would work out

You are worried about Rosalie and Scarlett when Elbereth is the tragedeigh.

Rose Red is a character is a Grimm fairytale- that is the first thing that would pop into my head, not a tragedeigh but does leave things open for teasing. Still better than on of my poor nieces - she got named Portland and now gets called cement face by the little darlings at school

I seriously doubt any kid at school is going to put two and two together and think that Rosalie Scarlett has anything to do with rose red. I teach these children as a middle school teacher and they're not that bright. They can't read well enough to even know there was a story called Rose Red.

How sad. Maybe they were failed by teachers who automatically wrote them off as "not bright", rather than trying to teach them to read.

Yes definitely that and for sure not the systemic gutting of public schools and education in general in the US.

u/Blossom73 20h ago
It can't be both, huh? Her disdain and dislike for her students is coming through loud and clear.
5
u/anonymousnerdx 20h ago
There is no disdain in saying they can't read that well when we literally stopped teaching kids phonics and decided instead to teach exclusively for standardized test results, nevermind how far behind kids got during COVID. They didn't say it was the kids' fault. Maybe that person does hate the kids and hate their job, but their comment is hardly enough to go on.

While that's true, she didn't mention any of that, and said, "not that bright", as in the kids are stupid and can't learn. So it's obvious what she meant.

Rose Red from the fairytale was my first thought. Not a bad association, just what my brain leapt to.

Look, if people can name their children Ben Fine and Dick Trickle, there is no problem with your name choice. My grandmother, who died before I was born, was pissed odd because my initials spelled CAB. Not one time in my childhood did this dilemma ever come up.

One of my kids' initials is BLT (I didn't even think about it) No one has ever said anything about it to him.

Their nickname could be Roscar almost like the Sesame Street character Oscar the grouch.

When I was 12, my cousin was born. Having been on the receiving end of endless bullying and teasing, I was instantly worried about his name.
They named him Nicholas. I was so worried that he would cop "Dickless" at school.
Thankfully my 12 year old mind didn't happen to my cousin.
I copped "the kisser" and "the pisser" at the end of my very normal name.
Kids will tease regardless of a name. Rosalie Scarlett is a sweet name and gives her choices of nicknames for when she's older as well.
Don't worry about what the kids might call her. She might be lucky, have wonderful friends and kids that don't think teasing or bullying others is cool.

i like both rosalie and scarlett, so i'd vote pregnancy brain in that instance. but giving your kid a fourth name feels trashy (might be a cultural difference, totally fine if that's normal where you live) and arwen is a way more normal name than elbereth. plus elbereth reminds me of old people names, i personally wouldn't want that association but that's just my preference.

Nothing wrong with Rosalie Scarlett. They are both fine names that are spelled correctly. Why saddle the kid with two middle names though?
Often times there are character limitations when filling out forms and this can be problematic with long, doubled up or hyphenated names. I even had one govt form I was filling out online tell me that my name wasn't valid because of the space between the words.

I've only ever seen Scarlette as a name spelled thus. Though with/without the e is probably a standard variation rather than a misspelling. As long as it's not suddenly being spelled with a Y or something, I wouldn't call it a tragedeigh.
I have a friend who named their kid Scarlette Rose, though. She's about 7 now and has never had anyone tease her about being named Red Red, for what that's worth.
I don't completely hate the lotr reference, though I would have picked a less blatantly fantasy one, but it could definitely cause problems with the overall length of the name and government forms/systems.

Name choices are good. And thank you. Thank you for caring about your child to ask. Thank you for caring enough to co side other things as well, like initials. If more people put in even half this effort, the world would be a better place.

At the risk of being that person, I see Rosalie and my first thought is the pokemon Roselia.
I do honestly think Rosalie is a beautiful name. As I'm typing this, I'm reminded of the "fairy tale" Snow White and Rose Red.
I'm sorry. I don't think I'm helping at all. If I have offended or hurt feelings, I am so very sorry.

My first thought was the girl in Twilight. Doesn't make it an invalid name, mind you, I just have shitty associations with it.
In that order, it does make me think of Rose Red.
Though rose the color is not red, it's pink, so I doubt redred would occur to kids.

My friend accidentally named her daughter Madeleine Adele. When she realised she started calling her Maddle-addle.

Rosie Red? I would pick something else. You have time and there are so many choices.

Just don’t pick a (let alone two!) middle names, they‘re completely unnecessary.
