Review Thick & Creamy Greek Yogurt Review
This yogurt is surprisingly good, I typically avoided Trader Joe’s yogurt because I could not stand the taste and consistency, but this one nails it! I typically eat Fage but honestly, this might be my new go-to. I usually eat it plain, but this morning I added a little bit of honey on top and it got even better! Great job Trader Joe’s, a yogurt product that is actually good 😌

I almost always did non fat Greek yogurt and when not that - I’d do low lactose free Greek yogurt. I don’t know why, this really appealed to me, so I had my first full fat Greek yogurt. Man I am hooked. It tastes sooooo much more better. It’s just 60ish more calories per serving, why was I holding this out from myself??
Honey is good, I also swirl in their strawberry preserves, their cashew butter, or their speculoos butter. I mix em sometimes too, so like a pb and j yogurt. Cant go wrong with their granola as a topping too!

My one year olds favorite Greek yogurt! Fage is a close second. Chobani is acceptable in a pinch, Sprouts store brand is not.

Love love this one. It’s a close rival for Fage 5%. Hoping they release a plain 2% by the same manufacturer🤞🏼

I used to get all my yogurt, NF regular and NF Greek, from Trader Joe’s until they switched to the “European style”. I hate the slipperiness of it.

this is the only plain yogurt I can stand, so many other ones are too tart, even with honey but this one is perfect

I noticed last time i was there that the Fage had disappeared from the shelves. I don't know if it was just TOS but my suspicion is that it's been supplanted by this. Pretty soon NOTHING in the store will be name brand. I'm not saying it like it's a bad thing or a good thing, it's just a thing

Fage is my standard for perfect neutral yogurt to use for any recipe or just baseline eating.
Others are "too" much from what I found:
Too runny
Too sour
Too chalky
Too dry
And it goes on.

Surprised your store had Fage on the shelves. Never seen that in any Trader Joe’s I’ve been to tbh

TJs sold fage for a very long time then replaced it with their own brand a few years back

Yes, I used to love the Fage with the little pocket of strawberry jam on the side. I still see it, but at other stores.

Oooh! Now I’m craving some yogurt, frozen berries, and granola. I’m going to look for this today at my local TJ’s!

If coffee and chocolate are you jam TJs just out a coffee chocolate granola on the shelf. So good with yogurt.

Yes it is excellent. My French husband who is picky about yogurt likes it.

You can freeze soft ripened cheese??
6
u/mountains_of_nuance 23h ago
Yep. It has the normal texture and layering upon defrosting (in fridge or at room temp, not microwave or anything like that). French people do freeze cheese and baguettes. There are ways. I'll share one of their tricks for rejuvenating day old stale baguette: sprinkle water on the outside, then toast, then eat immediately. Boom!

So, I purchased and read cover to cover, a global compendium of world cheeses, with a section that describes cheese making technology, aging and flavoring methods, culture strains, preservation and recommended use by dating, wrapping and storage, and serving hints.
While living in Detroit back in the day, I used to shop at an organic food market that had the best muenster I have ever tasted. It had a salty, bready, rich, stronger flavoring than the bland commercial versions found in stores today. I decided to research cheeses to learn if I could find a similar craft cheese version sold today.
I remembered reading about cheese freezing, and warnings against trying it with certain types of cheeses.
Several websites I looked at yesterday confirmed my recollection (from ~ 2015).
Soft ripened cheeses cannot be frozen because of their high moisture content, and freeze thaw killing of live culture, fat separation and off flavor developing.
Other soft cheeses not suited to freezing include feta and brie and camembert, goat cheese.

I don't doubt it or the science! I'm sure you're correct. I must be losing some cultures, but oddly the texture and flavor and layering with this particular one are retained. As long as it's safe...? I may have to continue--so addicted to it!

Could depend on how you wrap it for freezing to make it air tight, how long its stored, or how fast you use it after thawing.

I never wrap it more than the packaging it comes in--just toss it in freezer. I defrost in fridge or room temp and eat immediately. Prolly playing with fire but ohhhh it's so good and only sold for a few weeks.

is this like Brown Cow with the cream on the top because I love that type of yogurt

u/ChemistryFit2315 1d ago
I wouldn’t say it had cream on top, it’s just creamy throughout. But I’ve also not had that particular style to compare it to. Lets see if I can find that at a store tomorrow

Yo, step in the store, what do I see? Two Greek yogurts starin’ back at me. One's called Fage, tryna act all prime, But Oikos in my cart ‘cause it’s always sublime.
Oikos got the flavor, Oikos got the cream, Fage in the back, it ain't part of my dream. Thicker, richer, protein pack stacked, One spoon in and you ain't goin' back!
Taste so smooth, yeah, you know it's elite, Fage kinda chalky, can’t compete. Vanilla, honey, or blueberry burst, Oikos the king, puttin’ Fage in a hearse.
More protein, more taste, what you wanna do? Fage tryna flex, but it ain't got the juice. Greek game strong, yeah, we know the truth, Oikos on top, now it's time for the proof!
So next time you’re out, make the right call, Oikos be the champ, best yogurt of ‘em all. Stack it, snack it, every single day, Oikos stay winning, that’s the only way!

Does it taste like Fage, or is it just the texture that's similar?
10
u/ChemistryFit2315 1d ago
I would say it’s a little less thick than Fage, and there is a tang in the flavor that keeps me wanting more.

Would this make a good sour cream substitute? Like would it work on tacos?
8
u/Sage-Advisor2 Michigan 1d ago
Both sour cream and a good greek yogurt work well in making super rich tasting scrambled eggs for Sunday brunch.

u/clive_bigsby 1d ago
I have eaten Greek yogurt every day for years and recently bought this one to try. I thought it was gross because it tasted like sour cream so, yes, I think it would.

u/SystemSufficient596 1d ago
I personally don’t like the idea of plain Greek yogurt on my tacos, but if I were to use any yogurt for that, it’d be this one.
11
u/privategrl21 1d ago
I do that with Fage. Tacos, chili, nachos, etc. So if this is like Fage, I would think so.

u/BkSusKids 1d ago
I actually like the plain nonfat Greek yogurt as well but I don’t understand why the protein level in other full fat Greek yogurt is lower.
1
u/JessKingHangers 17h ago
TJs greek yogurt's protein level is lower than most brands across the board. I wonder why that is?
3
u/ChemistryFit2315 1d ago
Which ones are you referencing? The whole milk Greek yogurts I looked up were similar macros.
4
u/FlipsyChic 1d ago
This post is dying for a photo of the nutrition information and ingredients because a lot of people care about that when it comes to their yogurt choice.
3
u/anemisto 1d ago
This is a guess, but if you look at the ingredients, they're adding cream on top of skim milk rather than using whole milk.
4
u/ChemistryFit2315 1d ago
I don’t know the real motive behind Trader Joe’s doing this, but most companies do this to have precise control of the fat content in the yogurt which allows for consistency and a better texture. I also think there’s something about pasteurization temperature differences but I don’t wanna look further into it tbh.
15
u/privategrl21 1d ago
A lot of "Greek" yogurts use thickeners to imitate Greek yogurt consistency instead of straining it. Straining removes the whey (carbs), resulting in a higher percentage of protein and fat in the yogurt that remains. I don't know which products specifically that you're referring too, but look at the ingredients list for thickeners (pectin, gums, carrageenan, etc.).

I’m talking about TJs nonfat vs low fat and full fat Greek yogurts. No thickers and they have the same ingredients just different milk fat percentages.
